Work Text:

Severus

"Severus… you… you have read the Prophet!" Harry's voice cracked with disbelief. "How can you be this calm?" His hands were trembling. He looked like he was moments from crying, lips pressed together, eyes wide with barely contained panic.
He snatched the rolled-up newspaper from the table and flung it at Severus. The thick parchment hit him square in the chest with a soft thud.
A low growl rumbled from Severus’s throat. His jaw twitched.
"I am not calm," he snapped, his voice low and rough. "But I don’t currently see a way to avoid this."
He sneered, but his sneer looked brittle.
"And you need to be aware," he added, eyes narrowing. "You’re twenty-four. In a year, you’ll be at this point too."
With a sharp flick of his wrist, he tossed the Prophet back onto the table. The front page flared open like a slap.

"NEW MINISTRY LAW: ALL MALE ALPHAS OVER 25 MUST MARRY WITHIN TWO MONTHS"
In a controversial move, the Ministry has decreed that every male Alpha over the age of twenty-five must marry within the next two months and produce offspring within two years. “We cannot allow the magical population in Britain to continue to decline,” Minister Cornelius Fudge stated in this morning’s press conference.
To assist eligible Alphas in their search for suitable matches, the Ministry has compiled a list of available female Betas ready for bonding:
• Dolores Umbridge
• Rita Skeeter
• Arabella Figg
• Persephone Parkinson
• Loretta Zabini
Further assistance will be offered to any Alpha unable to find a match. Expect Ministry correspondence in the coming days…

Severus exhaled harshly and rubbed a hand over his face. Outwardly, he looked composed - tired, perhaps, but still whole. Inside, he was chaos. Fury. Resignation.

He and Harry had been together for two years now - secretly, quietly, desperately. After the war, they'd drifted into an unlikely friendship. That friendship had deepened, then twisted into something impossible. Something forbidden.
An Alpha male and another Alpha male. A pairing seen as unnatural. Dangerous. Against both law and instinct, according to half the Wizengamot.

They had no public relationship. No shared flat. No casual dinners in Diagon Alley. Only a hidden cabin nestled in the wild northern woods of Scotland, where they could pretend, just for a night, that the world didn’t exist.
He looked at Harry now - Harry who was barely taller than five foot seven, with a wiry frame and high cheekbones, skin flushed, and that ever-messy raven hair now completely disheveled from anxious fingers. His eyes were luminous green, wet with unshed tears. The scent of his distress filled the air: cedar, fire, and something warm and aching.

Severus swallowed. He had known - had always known - this wouldn’t last. That one day, Harry would come to his senses or the world would rip them apart. That someday, some line would be drawn.
And this... this was that line.

What did Harry even see in him? He was in his mid-forties, pale, aging, with a hooked nose and deepening frown lines. His strength came with shadows, his magic had edges, and his tongue was far sharper than his looks.
Even Ron had once snapped at Harry, “What do you see in him?” And Harry had just smiled that quiet, stubborn smile.
Only Hermione and Ron knew. Only they had seen how serious it had become. And they had helped cover for it - loyal and secretive, despite everything.

Severus walked over and gathered Harry into his arms. His scent calmed the storm in his chest. He kissed his forehead, just once, feeling the warmth of his skin beneath his lips.
"Harry," he murmured, “we always knew our relationship had an expiration date.”
He hated how his voice sounded - tired. Cracked. Weak.
He glanced at the Prophet still splayed on the table. The names leapt off the page like a curse.
Dolores Umbridge.
Rita Skeeter.
Arabella bloody Figg.
Persephone Parkinson - Pansy’s mother, likely.
And Loretta Zabini, who had reportedly outlived seven husbands and buried them all with suspiciously good grace.
Women. All of them. No Omegas, because Omegas were nearly extinct. And... No Harry.

Harry pulled away, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. “You may have already given up on us, Severus - but I haven’t. I won’t. I’ll find a way. Come what may.”
The tears were gone. What remained was fire. Purpose.
He turned and strode from the cabin, boots crunching across the wooden floor with finality.
Severus stood in the echoing silence, the scent of him still lingering.
He closed his eyes.
His brave, reckless lion.

Harry

When Harry arrived at 12 Grimmauld Place, his hands were still trembling. The front door shut behind him with a hollow thud, but the sound did nothing to ground him. His breath was coming in shallow bursts, like he’d just run miles instead of apparated.
He gave up on me.
On us.

Severus’s words echoed in his mind like poison. Cold. Final. Inevitable.
Harry gritted his teeth and pressed a palm against the wall, trying to steady himself.
He loved that man - Merlin, he loved him. With every fibre of his being, with every scarred part of his soul that had managed to heal only because Severus had been there, quietly, fiercely, and always. How could he just… surrender?

When he finally stepped into the kitchen, the scent of tea and something slightly burnt greeted him. It should have felt warm, familiar, safe. But the moment his eyes landed on Ron and Hermione, seated at the old wooden table, everything inside him shattered.
Hermione stood instantly. Her brow furrowed with worry. “Oh, Harry… we saw the Prophet. It’s madness. Fudge has completely lost it.”
Her voice was tight, indignant, protective. She was still in her Ministry robes—creased and smudged, a quill sticking out from behind her ear. She worked in Muggle Relations, but Harry knew she had ears in every department.
Ron nodded beside her, arms crossed, his jaw set. “They can’t just force people like that - dozens of Alphas? It’s not right.”

Harry let out a harsh laugh, bitter and cracked. He moved to the table and dropped into a chair like his legs couldn’t hold him anymore.
“Of course they can,” he muttered, running a hand through his hair. “You’ve both seen it - read it. It's already happening.”
The silence after was heavy, thick as molasses.
And then - finally - the dam broke.

His voice cracked as he spoke. “And the worst part... the worst part is, Severus has already given up. Just like that. Like we don’t matter. Like... like two bloody years meant nothing to him!”
His throat constricted. He couldn’t stop the tears this time. “He’s not even trying, not even thinking about how we could fix this. We could go abroad, right? Hide. Fight. Something. But he just... looked at me like it was already over.”
He slammed a fist against the table and bowed his head. Hot tears streamed down his cheeks, dripping onto the scarred wood below. Every breath hurt.
Hermione crossed the kitchen in a heartbeat and wrapped her arms around him tightly, pulling him into a firm embrace. Her hand came up to cradle the back of his head as he buried his face in her shoulder.
“You know running would only postpone it, Harry,” she murmured into his hair. “Even if you left the country, the law would still hang over you. Like the sword of Damocles—waiting to fall.”

Ron looked uncomfortable, like he didn’t know where to put his hands. He stepped closer anyway, expression softer now.
“And, mate,” he said quietly, “you’ll be twenty-five in a few months. They’ll come for you next. This isn’t just about Snape anymore.”
Harry pulled away from Hermione’s embrace, scrubbing his face with the sleeve of his jumper. His voice was rough, but steadying.

“There has to be a way,” he said, standing abruptly. He started to pace the kitchen. The floor creaked beneath each agitated step. “We could sue the Ministry. Or file some kind of injunction. We could get public support. People won’t just sit by while the government plays matchmaker.”
Hermione gave a soft sigh. “That’s not a bad idea. But even if we get it to court, legal proceedings take time. Severus has two months. Not enough. I’ll dig through the archives at work - old legislation, binding laws, loopholes. Maybe I can find something the Minister overlooked.”
“Thanks, Mione,” Harry said hoarsely. He tried to smile, but it flickered like a candle in a storm.
“We’ll figure something out,” Hermione promised, squeezing his hand. “You’re not alone.”
Ron reached out and gave his shoulder a firm pat. “If nothing else, I’ll punch Fudge in the face. He’s due.”
That earned a weak laugh from Harry - just a breath - but it was something.

They stayed a little longer, sharing ideas, speculations, and endless cups of lukewarm tea. But soon, they had to return to their respective lives. Hermione had work in the morning. Ron had a shift with George at the shop. Promises were made to reconvene soon, to keep fighting.
And then Harry was alone.
The kitchen, once filled with voices and hope, now echoed with silence. He stared at the newspaper still crumpled on the counter. That damn list of Betas seemed to mock him.
He spent the day pacing, thinking, obsessing. He cycled through every emotion like clockwork - grief, rage, despair, numbness, and back again. He thought of Severus, of their quiet nights, their rare laughter, the warmth of strong arms around him.
By nightfall, he was exhausted. He hadn’t eaten. Hadn’t slept. Hadn’t stopped thinking.
And as he climbed the stairs to his bedroom, Harry knew one thing with utter certainty: if there was a way to fix this - to save Severus, to save them - he would find it.
Even if it destroyed him.

---

The following week was hell.
Harry tried - really, tried - to lose himself in work. His little cursebreaking shop tucked behind Flourish and Blotts had once been a sanctuary. Quiet, focused, challenging. People came to him with all sorts of hexed, jinxed, and misbehaving magical objects: cursed mirrors that whispered back insults, vases that screamed when touched, diaries that wrote threatening messages in blood-red ink.
Normally, he loved the precision of it - the way every cursed object was a puzzle waiting to be solved. It demanded patience, care, and skill. He had all of those.
Or he used to.

Now, his hands shook during delicate unbinding spells. His mind wandered mid-incantation. He almost got bitten - bitten - by a cursed book with tiny fangs and a taste for fingers. The thing lunged for his knuckles when he forgot to place a binding charm first. He barely managed to slam the thing shut and cast a locking spell before it tore the hem of his sleeve to shreds.
His heart was still racing ten minutes later.
Get it together, he told himself. You're Harry bloody Potter. You’ve faced war. Dragons. Voldemort. This is just… heartbreak.

But that didn’t make the ache in his chest fade. It didn't stop the way his eyes darted toward the fireplace every five minutes, hoping for green flames and a voice he missed more than he could admit aloud.
To make it worse, the whole damn street was buzzing with talk of the new law.
Diagon Alley hadn’t shut up since the decree dropped. Every tea shop, apothecary, and pub was alive with speculation: who would marry whom, which Alpha was already bonded, who had received Ministry match recommendations. Names were whispered with giddy excitement or scandalous glee. And Harry?
Harry had become a target.

His shop had never been so busy - though not for the reasons he wanted. Cursed items were apparently the second priority now. The first was Harry Potter, Eligible Alpha, age twenty-four-and-a-half, war hero, magically powerful, single, and - if the Prophet’s timeline held - soon subject to the Ministry’s matchmaking schemes.
It was like a bloody parade of suitors.

Every few hours, another unmarried woman came in under some paper-thin pretense. A music box “accidentally cursed,” a comb “that might hex bad hair days,” a family heirloom with a “dark aura.” All smiles, fluttering lashes, and lingering touches on his wrist.
It was sickening.
One particularly forward witch asked if he’d like to come for dinner at her family estate. “We raise kneazles. You seem like you’d like cats.”
He'd almost hexed her out of sheer frustration.
He wanted to shout, I don’t want any of you. I’m already in love. And he won’t even look at me.
But he didn’t.
He just sent them away, one by one, trying not to lose his temper, trying not to scream, trying not to break.

The silence from Severus was worse.
They usually exchanged letters throughout the week, little notes hidden in thick envelopes, spelled to combust if intercepted. Sometimes, on rare lucky nights, they managed a quick meeting at their cabin in the Highlands. But now - nothing. No letter. No sign. No contact.

Each day that passed chipped away at Harry’s hope.
By Saturday evening, he couldn’t take it anymore.
He sat curled in the armchair by the fire in Grimmauld Place, cradling a cold cup of tea he hadn’t touched, staring into the grate like it might speak to him. His chest felt too tight. His ribs ached from how tense he’d been all day.
And then something in him cracked - sharp and sudden.

He stood up so fast the teacup spilled, hitting the carpet with a soft thump and slosh. His fingers reached automatically for the jar on the mantle. He grabbed a pinch of Floo powder, his heart hammering.
“Headmaster’s Office, Hogwarts!” he called clearly.
Severus’s office shimmered into view. The bookshelves. The dark oak desk. The flickering fire. And then - him.
“Harry.” The voice was low, surprised.
Harry’s heart squeezed painfully.
“Can I come through, Severus?” he asked, voice tight.
There was a pause.
A long one.
A terrible one.
And then finally, finally -
“…Of course.”

The green flames licked at his heels as Harry stumbled out of the Floo and into the Headmaster’s office.
The moment his boots touched the floor, the air shifted - cool, still, faintly scented with aged parchment, ink, and the sharp herbal notes that always clung to Severus. But tonight… everything felt wrong.
Severus stood near the fireplace, sleeves rolled up, the top two buttons of his shirt undone, his robe nowhere in sight. His dark slacks hung looser than usual on his lean frame, and his posture - usually sharp as a sword - was frayed. His hair, often carefully kept, was mussed and unkempt, as if he’d dragged his fingers through it one too many times. Shadows clung under his eyes, bruised and sunken. The man looked like he hadn’t slept in days.
God, Harry thought, his heart twisting, he’s falling apart too.

Then Severus met his gaze - and Harry broke.
Before a word could be spoken, Harry crossed the room in three long strides and threw himself into Severus’s arms.
Severus stiffened like a man caught off guard in battle - tense, unyielding. But Harry didn’t let go. He pressed in tighter, burying his face against Severus’s neck, inhaling his familiar scent: clean soap, crushed rosemary, and something darker and uniquely him. He could feel the frantic rhythm of Severus’s heart against his own chest.

Slowly - agonizingly slowly - Severus relaxed. His arms came around Harry, tentative at first, then stronger. A shudder rolled through him.
“Don’t you ever dare avoid me again,” Harry whispered into his collar, voice low and raw. His hands clenched in the fabric of Severus’s shirt.
Severus exhaled shakily, his breath ghosting over Harry’s temple. “You left the cabin in fury.”

“Yes. I did,” Harry admitted, pulling back just far enough to meet his eyes. “Because I was mad - at you, at the world, at everything. But I didn’t leave you. I could never leave you.”
His voice cracked at the end, thick with emotion.
“I just...” Harry pressed his hand over Severus’s chest, over his heart. “I want to find a way. A real way. I want us to have a life. Not one in shadows. Not stolen weekends. I want you.”
“I know,” Severus said quietly, and his eyes - normally sharp and guarded - shimmered with something heartbreakingly open. “I know, Harry. I stayed away because… I thought it might become easier if we stopped seeing each other.”
He looked away then, jaw clenched.
“But it doesn’t. It hasn’t,” he finished.

Harry reached up and touched his face, fingers brushing the hollow beneath Severus’s eye. “You look like hell.”
“I feel like hell.”
There was the faintest twitch at the corner of Severus’s mouth - an aborted smirk.
Then he stepped away, just enough to walk over to his desk. From beneath a stack of unopened correspondence, he drew a single envelope, its seal unmistakable: crimson wax, stamped with the official crest of the Ministry.

“It arrived three days ago,” Severus said, voice flat. “A direct reference to the new law. A polite yet legally binding request for bonding within sixty days. And the... child mandate within two years.”
He passed it to Harry with a look that could only be described as devastation made flesh. “It’s real now. Inescapable.”
Harry stared at the letter. His hands itched to burn it.

Severus continued, a touch quieter. “I spoke with Minerva, privately. She and a few others at the school are appalled. But we see no way to circumvent it. Not legally. Not publicly. I didn’t mention you... but she knows I’m gay. She’s known for years.”
Harry gave a quiet nod, swallowing thickly. “I talked to Hermione and Ron. They’ve been helping. Hermione’s combing the Ministry records, trying to find some legal loophole or outdated clause we can use.”
“Of course she is.” There was the faintest flicker of warmth in Severus’s eyes. “She always did have an affinity for impossible causes.”
Harry laughed softly, the sound fragile but real.

They stood there a moment longer in silence. The fire crackled. Somewhere outside, the wind brushed against the old stone of the castle.
Then, without a word, Severus reached for Harry’s hand and pulled him gently toward the sofa near the hearth.
They curled together in the dim light, legs tangled, arms wrapped tight. Neither spoke. There were no answers yet. No grand plans or victories. Just breath, heartbeat, and the solid warmth of the other’s presence.
Harry rested his head on Severus’s chest, listening to the steady thrum beneath the layers of tension and fatigue. One of Severus’s hands rested in his hair, fingers idly carding through the strands.
The world outside could burn.

Here, for a few stolen hours, they were just two people holding on.
When the first light of morning crept through the tall windows, Harry stirred reluctantly. He pressed a final kiss to Severus’s throat before rising, his chest heavy but a little less hollow.
No solutions yet. But he’d held him. Loved him. Reminded him.
And Harry knew one thing more than ever.
He would tear the world apart before he let it take Severus from him.

---

Harry had just finished plating the scrambled eggs when the floo flared behind him in a burst of green flame.
He didn’t even turn. “You’re just in time for breakfast.”
There was the sound of boots scuffing against the hearthstone, and then Ron’s voice, warm and hopeful. “Merlin, I could kiss you.”
Harry raised an eyebrow as Ron beelined for the table, eyes already locked on the steaming eggs and buttered toast. “Settle for tea instead.”
Hermione brushed the soot from her coat and crossed the room to hug him tightly. She lingered for a moment, her arms wound around him with the kind of hug that said she knew he hadn’t slept, hadn’t eaten properly, hadn’t breathed without hurting.
He leaned into it just a moment longer than necessary.

When they sat down, Harry passed the tea. “You didn’t find anything, did you?” he asked, voice low, resigned before she even answered.
Hermione’s brow pinched, her frustration bleeding through. “No. Not a single clause, no loophole, no precedent. It’s like they built the law to trap people exactly like you and Severus.”
Her voice cracked near the end, as if she took the failure personally - and knowing Hermione, she probably did.

The table fell into silence. Forks scraped against plates. Ron devoured his food like a man sentenced to death. Hermione toyed with her toast more than she ate it. Harry sipped his tea, stone-faced, his thoughts spinning in place like a broom caught in a storm.
Until Ron, mouth still half-full, muttered thoughtfully, “Y’know... it’d be no problem if one of you had the right gender.”
Harry blinked. “What?”
Ron looked up. “I mean… if one of you were an Omega, this wouldn’t be an issue. You’d be bonded already. No hiding, no threats, no Ministry letters.”
Harry scoffed, bitter. “Yeah. Would’ve solved everything, wouldn’t it? We could’ve bonded years ago. Lived together. Been free.”
The word tasted sour.

Hermione’s voice came slow, cautious. “I have heard rumors… about potions that shift second genders. Alpha to Omega. But it’s just whispers in restricted texts. Nothing concrete. And it’d be incredibly dangerous.”
Harry froze.
She saw it instantly.
“Oh no,” she said sharply, sitting upright. “No, no, no - I didn’t say that to give you ideas.”
But Harry’s thoughts were already galloping.
Gender-swap. Alpha to Omega.

He didn’t even feel particularly Alpha. Never had. Growing up among Muggles, he hadn’t even known about secondary genders until there were talks around his friends - and even then, no one at school could explain it properly. He wasn’t dominant. He didn’t crave control or status. He just wanted Severus.
He looked up slowly, almost dazed. “Hermione… this could be it. This could actually work.”

Her eyes widened in alarm. “Did you not hear me, Harry? There’s no recipe, no verified potion. Just fragments. Bits buried in fringe alchemy journals. It’s experimental. Dangerous. Possibly lethal.”
“But if it exists, someone made it once,” Harry said, his voice gaining strength. “That means it’s possible. And I don’t care how hard it is. I’d do it.”
Ron’s fork clattered to his plate. “You’ve lost your bloody mind.” He gaped at Harry. “You’re talking about changing your biology - your whole gender - just for Snape?”
“Yes, Ron,” Harry snapped, standing now, his heart pounding. “Exactly for him. Because I’d rather risk everything than let the Ministry force him to bond with someone else. I don’t care what I am, as long as I’m his. I’ve never cared.”

He was shaking, hands balled into fists, the adrenaline roaring in his ears. But beneath all that heat, something fierce and cold and clear was crystallizing inside him.
Purpose.
For the first time in over a week, the helplessness broke. The fog lifted.
“I have to start researching,” he said, almost to himself. “If there’s anything about secondary gender alteration, it’ll be in the Black family’s library. There’s stuff in there even the Ministry won’t admit exists.”
“Harry...” Hermione began, but her voice faltered.
He didn’t wait.
He was already striding for the study door, heart thudding, blood alive with the rush of possibility.
Maybe it was mad.
But it was his madness.
And it might just save the only thing that mattered.

---

Harry didn’t sleep that night. Nor the night after.
He shut his shop with a simple note on the door:
“Closed for personal reasons. Will reopen soon. Maybe.”
That was all the explanation the world would get.

Grimmauld Place had always smelled of cold stone, age-old dust, and secrets better left forgotten. The library, tucked behind heavy oak doors with tarnished brass handles, was no exception. The walls were lined floor-to-ceiling with leather-bound tomes and crumbling scrolls, the air thick with the scent of old parchment and something sharper - like dried herbs and faint decay.
Harry set up camp on the long table near the center. He moved between stacks in a rhythm: read, mutter, scribble notes, swear, toss a book aside. Ink stained his fingers. Dust coated his hair. He stopped changing his clothes. Ate only when Kreacher forced a plate in front of him. Every time his eyes closed, he saw Severus - sickly pale, too thin, exhausted - and the letter from the Ministry like a brand in his mind.

Two months.
Two months until Severus would be forced into a bond with someone else. Two months before the law made Harry obsolete.
On the second night, he finally found something.
The book was bound in grey-blue dragonhide, its title long faded, spine cracked. He’d nearly missed it, hidden behind another book. A copy of The Ethical Foundations of Magical Eugenics (a name so vile he almost hadn’t opened it). But when he flipped the cover, he saw the chapter header in bold, slanted ink:
“Voluntary Sub-Gender Reassignment in Alphas: Theory and Forbidden Application.”
His breath caught.

He dragged the book to the table, careful not to tear the brittle pages. His heart thundered in his chest like a war drum.
The text was dense, handwritten in a mix of Latin and archaic magical theory, but Harry’s eyes devoured it. The potion had no official name, but the formula was detailed. Sixteen ingredients. Most rare. Some borderline illegal.

Bluntly listed in a steady hand:
• Nerve pain during transformation
• Temporary madness (usually under a week)
• Death (in 4 documented cases)
• Heightened scent sensitivity (permanent)

Harry blinked.
No mention of sterility. No magical destabilization. No "loss of self" or permanent damage - just pain, a brush with madness, and a small chance of death.
He stared at the word “madness” for a long moment. It felt familiar already - like it had been creeping into his thoughts ever since Severus had said, “We see no way to circumvent the law.” As if his body had already begun unraveling in anticipation.
On the opposite page, a scrap of parchment had been glued into the margin. The ink was old and water - stained, but still legible:
“Tested and refined. Successful transformation confirmed. Potion scattered to prevent misuse. Copy restricted. Use only if willing to risk everything.”

No names. No initials. No clue who had created or tested it.
Harry exhaled shakily. The silence of the library pressed in around him.
This was it.
This was the way.

He could already feel a thread of resolve winding tighter in his chest. It wasn’t bravery. It wasn’t even recklessness. It was necessity.
If this is what it takes to stay with him… then I’ll do it.
His heart pounded as he pulled out a fresh sheet of parchment and began copying the instructions word by word.
By dawn, Harry Potter had a plan.
Not a safe one.
Not a simple one.
But one that meant he could stop waiting. Stop hiding.
And maybe - just maybe - he’d be able to keep the man he loved.

---

The list was long. Too long.
It took him nearly a week to track down every ingredient and it drained more than just his vault. Galleons vanished like smoke, but that wasn’t the worst of it. No, the worst was the black market.
Knockturn Alley had nothing on what lay deeper, below, in the rotted underbelly of magical London. Harry kept his hood low and his mouth shut. Every shadow seemed to have teeth. The air smelled of damp stone, copper, and old blood. People didn’t smile down there; they stared too long, or not at all. He was just another desperate buyer with a fake name and a bulging coin pouch.

He didn’t let himself feel fear - he couldn’t. Not when one wrong look might cost him more than just the Re’em blood.
And in the midst of it all, he saw Severus. Twice.
Their meetings were stolen, frantic things. The first time in the cabin, the second in an abandoned corridor at Hogwarts. The moment their eyes met, Harry was already falling into him. Their kisses were wild - hungry, desperate, teeth and tongue and trembling fingers. Touches turned fevered, fast - like they were trying to memorize each other before the world caught up.

But even in the heat of it, Harry could feel Severus watching him. Not just watching - searching. His dark gaze lingered a little too long, full of sharp questions he never voiced. Like he could smell the lies Harry hadn't spoken yet.
He knows something's wrong, Harry thought. He's trying to solve me like a bloody riddle.
But Severus said nothing. And Harry didn’t offer the truth.
He told himself it was mercy. That Severus would never let him go through with it if he knew. He’d call him reckless. Irresponsible. He’d drag him straight to St. Mungo’s if it meant stopping this madness.
So Harry stayed quiet.
It’s better this way, he lied to himself.
Better that Severus didn't know what Harry was willing to become - just to stay with him.

---

Harry stared down at the old book lying open on the Black family’s library table, its pages brittle, ink faded, the corners singed. It didn’t even have a proper name - just a sigil burned into the leather cover and a date scrawled on the first page: 1911.
Sixteen ingredients. Nine days of brewing. One irreversible result.
The shop was now closed since over a week. Hermione was livid. Ron refused to speak. But Harry - Harry had never been more certain.
He wanted to be with Severus. Openly. Legally. Fully. If that meant giving up being an Alpha, then good riddance. The identity had never fit him anyway - not like this did. Not like choice.

Day 1 – Foundation of Self
He cleared the room with saltwater and dragon ash, smearing protective runes on the floor with trembling fingers. He added crushed moonstone, mirrorleaf extract, and a few strands of his own hair into the silver-lined cauldron.
The brew shimmered faintly silver.
“I offer who I am,” Harry whispered, “to become who I must.”

Day 2 – Breaking Dominance
The Veela tear shimmered as it hit the surface, followed by the dissolving hum of the Siren’s Song Crystal. It took three hours to melt completely. The cauldron thrummed under his fingers.
“Harry James Potter,” he whispered into the steam, as if his name meant something now.

Day 3 – Anchoring the Body
He carved into the fresh Mandrake heart, added it to the brew, and let one crimson drop of Re’em blood follow. The cauldron warmed gently to 57 degrees. The potion turned a soft pearl-gray, and the scent of metal filled the room.

Day 4 – Magical Recalibration
Dragon heartstring resin crackled as it hit the potion. Mermish scale dust hissed and flared green. He stirred with his wand, whispering:
“Forma nova, ignis interior, sanguis meus, carnis flamma.”
The potion steamed like seawater and burned wood.

Day 5 – Acceptance of Pain
The Aconite flower turned the brew oily black. The Chimera liver gave it weight, like a sludge of shadow. Harry cut his palm and let three drops of blood fall in.
A bitter tang hit his tongue as the scent filled the air.

Day 6 – Cellular Rebirth
He ground Mooncalf bone marrow into paste, mixed it with a half-drop of Unicorn blood, and watched the brew recoil violently. The surface hissed like acid.
“May I die to be reborn,” he said into the steam. “Let the body become what the soul already is.”

Day 7 – Resistance and Madness
He added Silverthorn sap and powdered Dittany root, then stirred the brew every hour for six hours. Nausea clawed at him—he warded the room against hallucinations and curled up against the bookshelf between turns.
When the brew shimmered faintly gold, he knew it was ready to rest.

Day 8 – Final Purification
He let it sit, untouched, under a stasis charm. On the table beside it, he laid down his wand, a cracked mirror, and a faded photograph: a younger Harry, standing with Ron and Hermione, awkward and bright-eyed.
Goodbye to that boy, then.

Day 9 – New Moon
The sky outside was pitch black. He removed the stasis charm and reheated the brew to a gentle simmer. Steam coiled upward like breath in winter.
He whispered his name three times into the rising mist.
"Harry Potter. Harry Potter. Harry Potter."

The potion trembled. It was time.
He drank it all in one breath.
The pain came instantly - nerve-deep, electric, like his bones were being reshaped and his skin turned inside out. He didn’t scream. Couldn’t. His mind splintered. Everything went white.
Then - nothing.

Severus

Severus was worried.
He hadn’t heard from Harry in nine days. Nine. Not a letter, not a Patronus, not even one of those scribbled, half-legible notes he usually sent when too busy to write properly.
Granted, it was the thick of exam season and Severus had been up to his neck in overwrought seventh-years, howling fifth-years, and enough caffeine to kill a dragon. But still… something had felt off.
He had sent an owl. No reply.

And now, on the ninth evening, once the castle was quiet and all of Hogwarts settled into a fretful night, he could no longer bear the silence.
Grimmauld Place was cold when he stepped through the Floo. Cold, dark, wrong. The lights were out. No fire burned. The air was thick with stale magic and something acrid - burnt herbs and singed wood.
He stepped into the sitting room and froze.
There, on the table: an open book, pages stained with soot and something darker. An empty flask, still faintly steaming. Blackened scorch marks scorched into the tabletop.
And on the floor - Harry.

Curled in on himself, limp and unconscious. His face was ashen, lips cracked. His hair clung damply to his forehead, drenched with sweat. His breathing was shallow, too fast.
"Merlin..." Severus dropped to his knees, all formality gone. “Harry.”
His hands found Harry’s skin - it was burning hot to the touch. Feverish. Boiling from the inside out.

“What the hell have you done?” he whispered, voice hoarse with panic. His stomach churned. He’d known something was wrong - Harry had been jittery, distracted, his gaze distant, his touches rushed and trembling. At the time, Severus had feared it was the slow death knell of their fragile connection.
But this - this - was something else entirely.

Severus gathered him up, cradling Harry’s too-light form in his arms, and carried him to the sofa. The moment he laid him down, he reached for the flask and brought it to his nose.
The smell was… unfamiliar. Metallic. Sharp. Ancient.
Unease curled in his gut.
Then he saw the open book.
He picked it up and felt the blood drain from his face.
Voluntary Sub-Gender Reassignment in Dominant Alphas: Theoretical Framework and Applied Brew.

“No,” he breathed. “No - no, no, you didn’t…”
His hands trembled as he turned the page, scanning the headings, the diagrams. Side effects. Risk levels. Procedures. His eyes snagged on one line:
Temporary madness. Nerve damage. Fatalities in four recorded cases.

He looked down at Harry, whose body was twitching slightly in the throes of fevered dreams.
He did this. He actually - bloody fool - he did this. For me.
Severus pressed the back of his hand to his mouth. Fury, guilt, and heartbreak warred in his chest.
This reckless, infuriating, insufferable boy.

He conjured a bowl of cold water and a clean cloth, kneeling again beside Harry and gently wiping the sweat from his brow. His face was twisted in pain, even unconscious.
Severus’s jaw clenched. He had half a mind to shake Harry awake and hex him for this madness.
Instead, he conjured a chair and sat down, dragging it close to the sofa. He couldn’t leave - not when he didn’t even know what the outcome would be. The book had warned of pain and madness. Would Harry even wake up? Would he still be himself?
Severus summoned parchment and a quill with a sharp flick of his wand. He wrote a short, curt note to Minerva - “Emergency. You’ll need to handle tomorrow’s exams.” Then he sent it off with Kreacher, who vanished with a worried pop.

The floo flared again.
Hermione stumbled out, her eyes immediately landing on the scene.
“Oh Merlin - Harry,” she gasped, rushing forward.
Severus didn’t look at her. His voice was cold, precise. “Miss Granger. Did you know about this ridiculous, suicidal idea?”
She stopped short, pale. “He… mentioned it.”
“Mentioned it,” Severus repeated bitterly. “And it never occurred to you to inform me?”
“He made us promise,” she whispered. Her hands were shaking. “He knew you’d try to stop him.”
“Of course I would have,” Severus snapped. “Because I am not an imbecile. Because I value his life. Unlike him, apparently.”
Hermione’s lip trembled. “He loves you,” she said. “He just didn’t see another way.”
Severus exhaled, sharp and exhausted.
“I will look after him,” he said at last, voice low. “Just… go home, Miss Granger.”
She hesitated, then nodded and disappeared through the Floo.

Alone again, Severus leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, and looked down at Harry.
“You’re an idiot,” he murmured, brushing a damp curl from Harry’s face. “But you’re my idiot. And you’d better wake up.”
He didn’t say the rest. Didn’t say that if Harry died, he would never forgive him.
Because forgiveness was only possible if there was someone left to give it to.

Harry

Darkness had weight.
It pressed down on him - hot and wet, suffocating - like smoke made of blood and ash. His mind floated somewhere beneath it, unanchored and howling, flayed by a thousand invisible hands.
He couldn't move.
He had moved.
He was always moving. He was fire and bone and everything wrong.
His skin burned.
Inside his veins, something bubbled. Not magic. Not heat. Change.
A thousand ants crawling through his muscles, peeling them apart and stitching them back together again—wrong angles, new shapes. His ribs cracked and rearranged themselves while his spine bent into a foreign curve. Every joint screamed.
His throat was raw. Had he screamed?
He couldn’t remember.
He couldn’t remember anything.
There was a voice sometimes. Low. Snapping. Muffled.
Was it real?
"Reckless little idiot..."
Or maybe: "I swear to Merlin, if you die..."
Or perhaps: "Please."
Harry didn’t know.

Everything was too loud, or too soft. Time was liquid. Sound was colour. Pain was taste. Something lemon-bright curled behind his eyes and laughed at him when he begged it to stop.
The madness came in waves.
One moment he was floating, numb, surrounded by light and love and the phantom scent of something old and safe - cloves and parchment and wool.
The next moment, he was trapped inside his own body, drowning in heat, clawing at the walls of his mind while shadows shrieked and mocked him.
You broke yourself.
You broke everything just to be held.
He’ll never touch you again.
You're wrong now. Unclean. Other.
He sobbed. Or maybe he didn’t. It didn’t matter.
Hands pressed a cloth to his skin. Sometimes a voice muttered spells, like they could stitch sanity back into him. Sometimes the world flickered into clarity, and he felt it - cool water, a firm hand, the unbearable comfort of someone refusing to leave.
He hated them for it.
He loved them for it.
He ached for them.

“Severus…” he whispered once, maybe twice. His tongue was sand. His mouth wouldn’t work. The name burned like a spell half-cast.
He dreamt, if they were dreams. Of limbs on fire. Of Severus’s voice saying No, no, no, like he could rewind time with regret. Of Hermione’s face, stricken. Of someone dying. Was it him? Was he dying?
He hoped not.
He hoped so.
He drifted again.
Fireflies danced behind his eyes. They sang to him in a language made of gold and smoke. He curled into the pain, numb and burning and broken open.
Just let it end.
Then...
a shift.
A breath.
The pain, while still coiled through him like wire, ebbed. The madness hissed, then recoiled. The world tilted but held. The darkness pulled back its claws, just slightly.
And something cool touched his face.
Not water. A hand.
Real.
Warm, callused fingertips sweeping across his cheek.
He clung to it. Didn’t know how. But he did. Some part of him recognized that touch.
He followed it - clawed his way toward it through the muck of his mind like a soldier on his belly, dragging himself out of hell.
He wanted that touch. That voice. That scent. Him.
The silence settled. The pain dulled.
Harry stirred.
And slowly...
slowly...
he opened his eyes.

Severus

Severus hadn’t moved from the chair in three days.
The world outside Grimmauld Place could have burned to ash and he would not have noticed.
He had cleaned the sweat from Harry’s brow, again and again. Had cast cooling charms, diagnostic spells, pain-dulling charms - all useless, all insufficient. He’d forced foul-tasting potions down Harry’s throat with trembling hands, his heart clenched with every swallow.
He’d watched as Harry writhed in fever-drenched dreams, sometimes whispering, sometimes sobbing, sometimes silent as death.
And still, he sat.
Unmoving.
Waiting.

Every tick of the grandfather clock in the hallway was a blade. Every shallow breath that rattled in Harry’s chest was both a blessing and a torment.
Severus had not cried in twenty years. Not for Dumbledore. Not for Lily. Not for the wreckage of his own soul.
But tonight, as Harry’s hand twitched once in sleep, a single tear carved a silent line down Severus’s cheek.
“Foolish boy,” he whispered hoarsely. “Brilliant, reckless, infuriating boy.”

He looked at him - at the too-pale skin, the lashes stuck to damp cheeks, the mouth slack and colorless - and the ache in his chest became something sharp.
He hated him for doing this.
He loved him for doing this.
He loathed the fact that it had worked - the potion had taken hold, the changes were manifesting. Magical resonance intact. Vital signs unstable but present. The transformation was proceeding. Slowly. Painfully.
Severus had never felt so useless in his life.

“I would have found a way,” he murmured, voice cracking. “You didn’t have to destroy yourself to stay with me. You stupid, stubborn...”
He stopped. Words had no weight anymore.
He leaned forward, elbows on his knees, hands clasped tightly—like prayer.
“Please come back,” he whispered. “I’ll forgive you. I’ll... curse you later. Just... come back to me.”
A soft sound broke the silence.
A breath. A shift.
Then...
A flutter.
Severus snapped upright, heart lurching.
Harry’s lashes trembled.
And slowly, finally, green eyes opened.

---

Harry

Everything felt sharp. Too sharp.
Colors too bright, sounds too loud, smells - God, the smells.
The air around him was thick with magic and something warm, something earthy and spicy - Severus.
He could smell Severus’s soap, that faint trace of sandalwood and herbs mixed with something uniquely him, like a dark forest after rain.
It filled Harry’s senses like a tidal wave, overwhelming but… comforting.
He tried to move but his limbs felt heavy and strange, as if they weren’t quite his own anymore.
The heat burned deep in his skin, spreading in waves, wild and untamed.
His mind was foggy, fractured by flashes - memories, dreams, pain - and something darker, a madness clawing at the edges.
But then he felt it - the steady, fierce presence beside him.
Severus.

He heard the sharp intake of breath, a catch that sounded like relief and fury tangled in one.
“By Merlin, Harry...” Severus’s voice was low, trembling with something close to fear.
Harry tried to focus on his face - the worn lines, the pale skin, the eyes burning with equal parts anger and worry.
He wanted to speak, to say something, but words tangled in his throat.
Instead, he reached out, fingers brushing Severus’s hand, grounding himself.
He could smell Severus again - stronger, closer - and for the first time in what felt like eternity, something inside Harry loosened. The tension in his chest cracked open like old stone giving way to warmth.
Severus was here.
Warm, solid, anchoring.
And somehow… that was enough.

Arms, strong and trembling, wrapped around him. He was lifted gently, cradled like something precious. Harry felt the way Severus held him - too tightly, too carefully, as if afraid he might break apart.
“Harry,” Severus whispered, voice rough, “by Merlin, don’t ever do something like this again. I can’t...” He stopped. Swallowed. “I can’t stand the thought of you in this much pain. If you had died - if I had lost you...” His voice cracked, strange and soft and shaking.

Harry’s throat was raw. He rasped, “I’m sorry, Severus. I had to do it.” Every word burned like sandpaper, but it was the truth. “There was no other way.”
Severus conjured a glass of water with a flick of his wand and brought it to Harry’s lips, holding the back of his neck as he drank. The water was cool, grounding. His parched mouth soaked it up greedily.
“If you ever pull something this idiotic again,” Severus said, low and dark, “I swear I’ll hex you into next year.”

Harry gave a breathy chuckle, weak but real. “Of course you will.” He met Severus’s gaze, eyes glassy but honest. “But now we can be together. Openly. Forever.”
A strange noise broke from Severus - half-sob, half-groan, like he was angry and relieved all at once. “I love you, you reckless, impossible boy.”
“Love you too, Sev,” Harry murmured, smiling faintly.
Then he was being lifted again, Severus standing with surprising ease, despite the exhaustion etched into his features. As he carried Harry through the house, he muttered under his breath.
“You stink like a bloody Kneazle cage.”

Harry huffed a weak laugh, letting his head rest against Severus’s shoulder.
The bathroom was warm, the light soft and golden. Severus sat him on a cushioned stool, murmuring quiet spells to steady him. Steam rose as warm water filled the tub, and he began to undress Harry with deliberate gentleness - like unwrapping something fragile. Harry's skin felt raw, overly sensitive, and every brush of fabric sent tingles over his nerves, but Severus was so careful it nearly made him cry.
Severus eased him into the bath, the water enveloping him like a hug. Harry let out a quiet sigh.

A soft cloth met his skin. Warm, soapy water glided across his chest, arms, neck. Severus washed him with such care it was almost reverent. Harry closed his eyes, leaning into every gentle touch. Then Severus moved behind him and began to wash his hair, slow fingers massaging his scalp. Harry melted.
“Severus,” he murmured. “Join me?”
There was a pause. Then a quiet, “You know I can’t say no to you.”
Harry cracked one eye open and grinned. “You’ve been sitting beside me this whole time, haven’t you?”
Severus didn’t answer, but the flush in his cheeks was answer enough.

He stood and undressed with minimal fuss, then stepped into the tub, settling opposite Harry. The water lapped at his chest, the scent of his skin drifting over. Harry inhaled sharply.
Merlin, did he always smell this good?
He leaned forward, buried his nose in the crook of Severus’s neck, and murmured, “You smell incredible. Like potions and firewood and… home.”
Severus rolled his eyes, but his smirk was soft. “You’re clearly still mad from the potion.”
Harry laughed and pulled him forward. “Turn around. I want to wash your hair.”

Later, wrapped in warm robes, they sat at the kitchen table. The window let in soft moonlight, and a quiet stillness lingered between them. Harry devoured toast and soup, his stomach growling despite the knot still curled tight inside him. It wasn’t gone - not the pain, not the confusion - but Severus was here, and that was more than enough.
“Please stay tonight,” Harry said, not looking up from his bowl. His voice was quiet, stripped bare of charm or bravado.
He didn’t need to look up to know Severus was already nodding.

---

Severus

The bedroom was quiet.
Grimmauld Place always had a certain hush to it after midnight, as if the old walls were holding their breath. Severus lay on his side, propped slightly on one elbow, watching the man curled against him.
Harry.

His breathing had evened out, no longer ragged or pained. His body was still warm, wrapped in a clean, soft cotton shirt far too large for him. One of Severus’s, he realized. It looked right on him.
Everything about Harry had changed. And yet… not.
His scent was the first thing Severus noticed. Subtler now - but layered, rich. Still unmistakably Harry, that core of wild magic and summer air, but now threaded through with something softer, more instinctive. Like crushed herbs warming in the sun. It tugged at something low in Severus’s chest - something ancient, instinctual, and alarmingly possessive.

The transformation had clearly finished. The Omega scent was there now, under his skin, humming quietly in the space between them. But Harry hadn’t lost anything of himself. Not his stubbornness. Not his recklessness. Not the fire.
Only now, Severus could feel the difference even in Harry’s skin. Softer. Silken, like velvet draped over strength. When his hand slid gently down Harry’s back beneath the covers, it was impossible not to feel the change. Not feminine. Not weak. Simply different. Refined. More honed. His magic pulsed differently too - a strange, new rhythm that whispered like a heartbeat against Severus’s own.
He hated how much he had almost lost him.

“I know you’re awake,” he murmured, voice low and hoarse against Harry’s hair.
A small huff of breath. “Was trying to fake it.”
Severus pulled him closer with a soft exhale. Harry nuzzled into his chest without hesitation. His fingers curled slightly against Severus’s ribs, clinging. It made something ache, deep and protective in his gut.
“You smell different,” Severus said quietly. “Not worse.”
Harry lifted his head just enough to squint at him. “You’re sniffing me now?”
“You stink less,” Severus replied dryly. “It’s a relief.”

A slow grin spread across Harry’s lips, drowsy and fond. He settled back down, tucking his head just beneath Severus’s chin.
For a while, they lay in silence, the kind that asked for nothing, gave everything.
Severus studied the curve of Harry’s neck, the new softness in his features. The potion had altered him, undeniably - but it hadn’t changed who he was. This was still the boy who shouted in his shop, who defended his friends with fists and fury, who’d crashed into Severus’s life like a comet and never left.

Only now… his body spoke to Severus’s in ways it never had before. Every scent, every shiver of breath, seemed to settle into Severus’s blood. It was maddening. Terrifying. And yet - utterly grounding.
“You’re still you,” he said softly, almost to himself.
Harry made a small, sleepy noise, like a hum. “You were scared.”
“I was furious,” Severus corrected. “And then I was terrified.”
“I didn’t know if you’d still want me. Like this.”

Severus closed his eyes, exhaling through his nose. “You idiot. I don’t want you because of what you are. I want you because you’re you. Regardless of all of it.”
Harry didn’t answer, just pressed a soft kiss to Severus’s collarbone, then breathed out a wordless sigh and curled closer.
Severus pulled the blankets tighter around them and wrapped both arms around Harry’s smaller frame. He could feel the subtle difference in size now too—Harry had always been wiry and compact, but there was something newly delicate in the way his body fit against Severus’s. Not fragile. Just… more attuned.
He buried his nose into that wild mess of hair and let the scent fill his lungs.
Mine.
The thought came unbidden, unwanted, and utterly true.
Mine.
“Sleep,” Severus murmured. “We’ll argue tomorrow.”
Harry chuckled softly. “Can’t wait.”
Severus smiled against his hair, the smallest quirk of lips. “Insufferable Omega.”
Harry’s only answer was a soft snore, breath warm against his chest.
And finally - finally - Severus allowed himself to close his eyes and sleep.

Harry

When Harry woke the next morning, everything felt the same and yet completely different, all at once.
Severus was curled behind him, breathing steady and deep, his nose buried in Harry’s tangled hair. His arms wrapped firmly around Harry’s waist, pulling him close, pressing warmth into every inch of his skin. Harry could feel the undeniable hardness pressing just beneath the small of his back, teasing the sensitive crease where his body met the mattress.
Instinctively, Harry shifted, grinding softly against Severus. A low, half-asleep groan rumbled from the man behind him - raw, guttural, and utterly magnetic. The sound sent a jolt straight to Harry’s awakening senses, setting his pulse racing and his skin aflame. Encouraged, Harry nudged again, bolder this time.

With a fluid, effortless motion, Severus rolled on top of him, pinning him gently but firmly to the bed. His breath was warm against Harry’s cheek as his voice rasped, heavy with sleep and something darker.
“Aren’t you tired?”
Harry grinned, heart pounding. “No. Well-rested, actually. And... I felt something promising behind me.”
Severus’s eyes fluttered, dark and sharp, and a crooked smile tugged at his lips.
“Insufferable.”

He leaned down, his mouth capturing Harry’s in a kiss that was soft and demanding all at once. Their tongues tangled, heat building between them like a spark to dry tinder. Severus smelled incredible - earthy, with a hint of something musky and wild that Harry hadn’t noticed before, something deeper, more intimate.
A low growl rumbled from Severus’s throat, sending shivers down Harry’s spine. His own body betrayed him: rock hard and burning with need. And then… heat pooled wet and urgent between his thighs. His cheeks flamed.
Harry whispered, mortified. “I… I’m wet.”
Severus pulled back just enough to look down at him, eyes widening in disbelief and something like exasperation.
“Haven’t you read about Omegas?” His voice softened but still held a teasing edge. “Of course not. You rushed in, as always…”
He sighed, shaking his head as if trying to clear it, then began to slowly peel off their clothes. The cool air kissed Harry’s bare skin, heightening every nerve ending, every sensation.
“If you’re aroused, you’ll be wet,” Severus explained, his fingers trailing lightly over Harry’s skin, “and you need less preparation than others.”

A wicked grin spread across Severus’s face. His hand slid lower, brushing against the sensitive curve of Harry’s body. A moan escaped Harry’s lips. “Merlin… you feel incredible.”
Harry’s voice came out breathless, barely a plea. “Severus… please, I want you.”
There was a sharp, possessive gleam in Severus’s eyes as he settled between Harry’s legs. Slowly, carefully, he aligned himself and eased inside.
“Merlin, Harry,” Severus breathed, voice thick with need, “you feel so good.”

Their kisses became more desperate, wet and sloppy with desire. Words tangled with murmurs and gasps, the space between them charged with a heat that was almost unbearable.
Severus growled low in his throat as he nuzzled into Harry’s neck, teeth sinking just enough to draw a sharp gasp. His bite brushed against a gland there - magic swirling thick and heavy in the air, binding them in a way Harry didn’t yet understand but would never forget.
When Severus’s pace quickened, Harry’s control shattered. His body trembled, spilling over with a delicious, overwhelming release. The mingled heat of them, skin slick and slick, bound them closer than words ever could.
They collapsed, sweaty and spent, tangled in each other’s arms. The silence was filled only by their ragged breaths and the lingering shimmer of magic humming between them.
Severus looked down at Harry, eyes wide with a mix of awe and something heavier - regret, maybe, or fear.
“Harry…” he whispered, voice breaking. “I’m sorry…”
But Harry only smiled tiredly, heart full in ways he couldn’t yet name.

Severus

Severus sat rigid on the edge of the bed, fingers clenched so tightly his nails bit into his palms. The room was thick with the scent of sweat, warmth, and something undeniably intimate - Harry’s new, softer, richer Omega scent that clung to the air like a spell. It was beautiful, intoxicating, but it twisted Severus’s insides with guilt.
He had done something reckless, something unforgivable - he had bound them. Without consent. Without a single word of warning. In the desperate haze of the moment, blinded by his need to keep Harry close, Severus had claimed something sacred. And now he was drowning in the weight of that truth.

How could he have been so selfish? So possessive? How could he take from Harry a choice that was his alone? The thought crushed him, hollowed him out, leaving a raw ache behind his ribs.
Severus’s breath caught as his mind replayed Harry’s flushed, half-dazed expression during the bonding - the moment when magic flared and entwined them irrevocably. Harry hadn’t known. Couldn’t have known. And Severus hadn’t stopped it.
He swallowed the bitter lump rising in his throat and forced himself to look at Harry - still lying beside him, peaceful and unaware of the turmoil churning inside Severus. The faint rise and fall of Harry’s chest, the slow steady beat of his heart beneath Severus’s palm, grounded him in the moment.

Harry’s eyes fluttered open, meeting Severus’s with that infuriating calmness. His voice was light, almost teasing, as if the gravity of what had just happened didn’t weigh on him at all.
“I mean,” Harry said softly, pushing his damp hair back, “I transformed to an Omega. This was always the goal, wasn’t it? To be with you, close to you. This…” He motioned between them with a lazy smile. “Is just part of the package.”
Severus blinked, disbelief crashing through his guilt. This reckless, impossible man - he just shrugged off what Severus had agonized over as if it were nothing. How was Harry so unfazed? So unburdened? It both infuriated and humbled him.
But even as the frustration bubbled, Severus felt something deeper bloom - something fierce and possessive. His hand slid over Harry’s soft arm, fingertips tracing patterns that burned into memory. The Alpha in him stirred, awakening to the raw, beautiful vulnerability of his Omega.

“You’re insufferable,” Severus murmured, voice low and thick with emotion. “You don’t even realize what I’ve done. What this means for us.” He pulled Harry closer, his body responding without hesitation, pressing into the new softness of his mate.
Harry’s breath hitched as he settled against Severus’s side, head resting on his shoulder. “Maybe I don’t,” he admitted, voice quiet and sure. “But I’m here. Now. And you’re stuck with me.”
Severus’s lips curled into a slow, possessive smile. A low growl rumbled from deep in his throat, his Alpha instinct flaring in full force. “Good,” he said, tightening his arms around Harry, “because I’m not letting you go. Not ever.”
The weight of the bond between them hummed in the air, a tether stronger than any magic or vow. Severus could feel it in every fiber of his being—the fierce, undeniable claim of mate and Alpha. It was terrifying and beautiful all at once.
And as Harry sighed softly against him, Severus knew, with crushing certainty, that he would guard this reckless, infuriating, and utterly beloved Omega with everything he had. Possessively. Relentlessly.
Because now Harry was his. And Severus would never let him slip away.

Harry

Later that day, the bed still smelled like Severus - spice and potion smoke, pine and old parchment. Harry lay sprawled across the warm sheets, cheek pressed to a pillow that still held the shape of Severus’s head. His body ached in the best possible ways, a strange combination of stretched soreness and euphoric contentment. Every inch of him felt claimed. Different. Grounded and untethered all at once.
Severus had dressed quietly that morning, long fingers brushing through Harry’s hair one last time before whispering, “I have to return to Hogwarts. Minerva will murder me if I disappear another day.” He’d sounded reluctant, lingering, his mouth grazing Harry’s temple, his throat, the new mark on his neck.

They had talked - briefly - about what came next. About the bond. It was already registered with the Ministry. That had stunned Harry, how fast magic moved. A single bite during a heat-born haze and now their names were magically etched together in some dusty book in a Ministry vault.
Harry had shrugged, pulling Severus back down for one last kiss. “We’ll figure it out. I’m not worried. We’re together. That’s what matters.”
But now, with the house quiet and Severus gone, reality began to settle in his bones like a draft. He was different. He didn’t feel wrong. Just... rewired. More aware. More tuned in to the world around him. Especially scents. Merlin, especially scents. Every blanket in the room smelled like Severus, and just breathing them made heat stir low in Harry’s belly.
He was distractedly poking around the kitchen, still shirtless, when the Floo roared to life in a flare of green flame. Hermione stepped through first, followed closely by Ron. Harry barely had time to smile before Hermione froze, her nostrils flaring like a bloodhound.

“Oh my God,” she gasped, eyes wide. “You really did it!”
Before Harry could respond, she darted forward and hugged him tightly. Her fingers trembled slightly against his back. “I can smell your Omega. It’s all over you.”
Harry blinked. “You can… smell it?”
Ron stepped closer and immediately recoiled with a laugh, waving a hand in front of his nose. “Mate. You reek.”
Harry flushed. “Cheers.”

But Ron’s grin faltered as his eyes landed on Harry’s neck. His expression changed - confusion flickering into realization, then surprise. “Wait… you’re bonded? Already?”
Hermione gasped and grabbed Harry’s chin, turning his head slightly to reveal the mark just above his gland. “Harry! This… this is permanent.”
“I didn’t even notice, not really,” Harry admitted, rubbing at the mark as if that would dull the tingling heat beneath the skin. “It just… happened. In the moment. Severus was… devastated after. But honestly? This was the goal. I wanted to be with him. And I love him so much. And - Merlin - he smells so good.”
His voice dipped into a dreamlike murmur at the end, face softening into a dopey grin.
Ron groaned and turned away. “Too much information, mate. Really. Burned into my brain.”
Hermione laughed despite herself, swatting Ron’s arm before looking back at Harry. “Well… if you’re happy, we’re happy. And finally - no more secrets. No more hiding in dark corners like you’re ashamed.”
“I wasn’t ashamed,” Harry mumbled, “just… cautious.”
He grinned and scratched the back of his neck. “Anyway, I think I need a book on Omegas. I never really cared about all the biology or… stuff. Maybe I should now.”
“Maybe?” Hermione arched a brow. “Harry James Potter, you transformed into an Omega. That comes with a whole new physiological blueprint. New instincts. New vulnerabilities. Merlin. It’s not just a label - it’s a whole experience.”
“I’m still me,” Harry said. “Just... with some add-ons.”
Ron chuckled. “Add-ons. That’s one way to put it.”

Hermione grew serious. “Listen, I think you’re going to get a visit from the Ministry soon. They don’t always move fast, but bonded pairs - especially high-profile ones - are monitored. Especially when one of them just completed a rare transformation.”
Harry tilted his head. “Why? I always handled my own business. I’m not about to stop now.”
Hermione’s expression softened. “Yes. You did. And you’re still Harry, still strong, still stubborn. But things are different now. While Omegas have equal rights on paper, magically speaking… your Alpha’s word carries weight. Especially in disputes, or if there's a legal concern. In some circumstances, Severus’s authority over you is absolute.”
Harry blinked. “What? You mean he could just… speak for me?”
Ron leaned against the fireplace. “Mate, you really should have read the Omega section of that book before you brewed the damn potion.”
Harry groaned and rubbed his face. “Yeah, yeah. Mistakes were made.”

He looked down at himself - still barefoot, still vaguely sore, marked and still faintly humming with the magic of a bond he hadn’t seen coming.
But he didn’t regret it.
Not one moment of it.
He smiled to himself, then said quietly, “But I’d do it all again. Even with the books unread. Even with the mess.”
Hermione stared at him for a long moment, then sighed and hugged him again. “Then you’ll be fine. And I’ll bring you a proper guide.”

---

The morning light filtered through the curtains in slats of soft gold, but Harry didn’t feel particularly golden.
He stretched carefully under the duvet, wincing slightly at the soreness in his lower back and thighs - a dull, well-earned ache that lingered as a reminder of the night before. Every shift against the sheets made him hyper-aware of the bond mark at his neck, which still throbbed faintly with warmth, like a barely-healed burn kissed with magic. His skin felt... more sensitive. His whole body was different. Not wrong—just unfamiliar.
He turned to the empty side of the bed.
Severus had stayed at Hogwarts.
And gods, Harry missed him.

It was stupid, wasn’t it? He’d spent years being self-reliant, holding his own through wars and trauma and loss. And now, less than twenty-four hours into this Omega thing, he felt adrift because Severus wasn’t curled around him like a snarky furnace of possessiveness and spice. His scent lingered faintly on the sheets, but it wasn’t the same.
Harry pulled the pillow closer and buried his face in it, inhaling deeply. Okay, that’s weird, he thought - and then Well, maybe not so weird. Just… Omega weird.
He shuffled into the kitchen wrapped in a blanket, hair wild, trying not to wobble on sore legs. He had just poured tea when the floo roared to life in a burst of green flame.

Three figures stepped into his flat like smoke on the wind.
Cornelius Fudge, in his ridiculous pinstripe robes. Dolores Umbridge, pink and smug and repugnant as ever. And a third man Harry didn’t recognize - tall, gaunt, with dark eyes that looked like they never smiled.
“Harry Potter,” Fudge began, with no preamble. “We need to discuss your... condition.”
Harry blinked. “Excuse me?”
Umbridge stepped forward, clutching a file to her chest. “You've undergone an unregulated Alpha-Omega transformation without Ministry oversight. And you are already bonded to an Alpha. There are legal structures. Registrations that must be filed before such reckless bonding occurs. Honestly, Mr. Potter, it reeks of impropriety.”
Harry’s grip on his mug tightened. “It was my choice.”

The third man spoke for the first time - his voice cold and clipped. “You’re a national figure, Mr. Potter. Your biology isn’t just your concern. You’ve bonded with a powerful Alpha - one who has ties to many volatile magical histories. This sets a dangerous precedent.”
Something twisted in Harry’s gut. Not fear, exactly - but a sharp, biting discomfort that made his shoulders square and his hackles rise. He felt cornered. Like prey.
He remembered Hermione’s words from yesterday. "If they show up, call Severus immediately. This isn’t about strength - it’s about authority."

Harry didn’t hesitate. He walked straight to the floo, tossed in a pinch of powder, and said with sharp clarity, “Severus Snape, Headmaster’s Office, Hogwarts.”
The flames flared green again - and within seconds, Severus stepped through, still in his tailored black robes, hair immaculate, eyes already narrowed.
Severus looked at the scene before him. “What,” he said, voice low and dangerous, “are you doing in my Omega’s home?”
The room dropped several degrees.

Umbridge flinched. Fudge’s face blanched. The third man took an unconscious step back.
Severus crossed the room with slow, deliberate grace. One hand slid around Harry’s waist, pulling him close. Harry hadn’t realized how tense he’d been until the scent of Severus - potions, smoke, Alpha - settled over him like armor.
Severus turned his full attention on the intruders. “You think you can barge in unannounced and interrogate him like he’s a criminal? The bond is registered. The transformation was lawful. The Omega is of age, of sound mind, and has voiced no complaint. Your presence is both unlawful and unwelcome.”
Fudge blustered. “It’s not about legality, Severus. It’s about optics...”

“I care very little about optics,” Severus cut in silkily, voice turning lethal. “Unless you are here with a signed warrant from the Department of Magical Family Affairs, I suggest you leave. Now.”
Umbridge opened her mouth to protest - but Severus silenced her with a single look. Cold. Regal. Utterly Alpha.
Harry leaned into him instinctively, and the effect wasn’t missed. Umbridge’s eyes darted to their physical closeness, then to the mark on Harry’s neck, and something like panic flickered in her smile.
The third man finally spoke again, but this time his tone was wary. “We’ll be in touch.”
“No,” Severus said. “You won’t. All Ministry contact concerning my Omega will go through me directly. This conversation is over.”
And with that, he turned all three toward the fireplace. Harry didn’t look back as the officials shuffled awkwardly into the flames and disappeared one by one.

Silence settled, broken only by the crackling of the hearth.
Harry let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. “That was…”
“Unacceptable,” Severus muttered. “They dared corner you. In your own home.”
“You really got all ‘Alpha’ back there,” Harry said with a breathy chuckle, still pressed into his side. “Kinda hot, not gonna lie.”

Severus huffed but didn’t deny it. His hand slipped to the back of Harry’s neck, fingers stroking just beneath the mark.
“They will not touch you. They will not question you. You are mine, Harry.”
Harry leaned in closer, smiling against Severus’s collar. “Yeah. I know. And you’re mine, too.”

---

The book was thicker than expected and far too pink. He scowled at the cover like it had insulted his intelligence. “The Comprehensive Guide to Omega Physiology and Wellbeing” - Hermione had snuck it into his hands with a kiss on the cheek and a pointed look, muttering something about "knowing what you’ve gotten yourself into."
Harry sighed, tucked himself against Severus on the sofa, and cracked it open.
"Do I have to?" he muttered.

"You’ll whine less once you know what to expect," Severus replied dryly, an arm looped around Harry’s waist, warm and grounding. "Ignorance is not endearing."
Harry made a face but flipped through the contents. “Alright, here we go. 'Chapter Four: The Omega Body – Understanding Cycles and Heats.'” He glanced up. “You know, I still think this whole system is bonkers. Heats? Really?”
"It’s biology, not romance. Heats are the result of hormonally triggered fertility cycles," Severus said. “Ignore the language. It’s meant to sell to frightened clueless Omegas and insufferably smug Alphas.”
Harry snorted. “Well, lucky me, I’ve got the smug one.” Severus pinched his hip. Harry yelped.

But then his eyes caught a passage, and he fell quiet:
“While heats vary in intensity, most Omegas will experience increased sensitivity, restlessness, and a biological compulsion to seek comfort or presence from their bonded Alpha. Extended separation during these periods may cause physical discomfort or emotional distress.”
Harry blinked. “Wait. So… if I go a week without you, I might get sick?”
Severus hummed. “Not sick, exactly. Agitated. Disoriented. Like… low-grade withdrawal.”
“That’s horrifying,” Harry muttered. “I like you, but I don’t want to need you like that.”
"You already do," Severus said without missing a beat, entirely too smug. Harry elbowed him. Gently.
More reading. Harry’s brow furrowed. “So what happens during a heat? I just curl up and beg?”
“You could, if you’re dramatic,” Severus said dryly. “It doesn’t rob you of your mind, Harry. It intensifies your physical needs - touch, closeness, stimulation - but you’ll still be you. Just… hotter. Needy.”
Harry made a face. “Lovely. I’m going to be an overgrown hormonal inferno.”
"You were already that," Severus muttered. Harry laughed.

Then his eyes drifted further down the page and he frowned. “While nesting is often associated with Omegas in heat…” He groaned and shoved the book into Severus’s chest. “Nope. Not doing the whole ‘nesting’ thing. I’m not piling pillows and hoarding socks.”
“I should hope not. I’d burn it all,” Severus said with a sniff. “My quarters are already austere enough without you adding a blanket fort.”
They shared a look and burst into quiet laughter. It was… good. Strange, but good. Even comforting.

A line caught Harry’s attention again, just before he closed the book: “Proximity to one’s bonded Alpha can significantly ease an Omega’s heat symptoms. Alphas are encouraged to remain physically available during early bonding months.”
Severus reached for the book, scanning it briefly. Then, after a pause, he said carefully, “You should stay at Hogwarts most nights. My quarters have a private Floo. You can still work on your shop, but…” He looked at Harry, serious now. “I don’t want you suffering through a heat alone. Especially not your first.”
Harry blinked. He hadn’t expected that kind of gentle protectiveness. Not from Severus. But it made something warm unfold in his chest.
“Okay,” he said quietly. “I’ll stay with you.”
Severus nodded. “Good. I’ll ward the quarters. You’ll have access to everything.”
Harry leaned into him, shutting the book and letting it rest on his chest. “You’re weirdly good at this.”

“I’ve read more about Omega care in the last week than most midwives,” Severus muttered. “You’re not just anyone, Harry. I take care of what’s mine.”
Harry flushed, deeply. Not because he minded the words. But because, strangely… he liked them.

---

The bell above the door jingled as Harry turned the sign to OPEN. The soft hum of the wards settled into place, his usual enchantments humming quietly across the walls like a warm pulse beneath the skin of the building.
He took a deep breath.
Gods, the shop smelled like home - polished oak, parchment, faint remnants of gunpowder and dragon’s blood, and a whisper of ozone clinging to the wards. But layered beneath that, sharper and strange now that his senses had changed, he caught it: a memory of Severus. His scent still clung to the cuffs of the coat he wore, and Harry closed his eyes for a second, anchoring himself in that.
It had only been half a night apart, and already something inside him itched at the distance.
You're not broken, he reminded himself. This is just… the new normal.

The Prophet had dropped off that morning’s edition by owl, as usual. He hadn't dared look yet.
He unrolled it now with a grimace and wasn't surprised when, right on the front page, in large bold letters, it screamed:
"THE BOND UNSEEN — Harry Potter and Headmaster Snape in Rare Omega-Alpha Pairing!"
A very flattering photo of Severus (clearly taken without his consent), standing stiffly in full robes at the last Wizengamot session, had been placed next to one of Harry from last week, laughing with Hermione outside Flourish and Blotts. The article was speculative at best, laced with "anonymous sources" and conveniently vague "close friends" confirming everything from their private bonding to imagined wedding plans and scandalized reactions at the Ministry.

Harry rolled his eyes and tossed the paper into the bin.
The morning was steady. A witch brought in a cursed mirror that kept turning the viewer into their most embarrassing memory. A warlock needed help disarming a blood-bound blade. Routine stuff, really.
But there were moments now - little shifts - that hadn’t happened before.

One man, tall and sharply dressed in elegant robes, lingered longer than necessary at the counter. His scent had an edge - not aggressive, just evaluative. A whiff of dominance beneath polite words. Harry clocked him immediately.
“Is it true, then?” the Alpha said softly, placing a hand over the Prophet that he clearly hadn’t bought just for the crossword. “About the bond?”
Harry met his gaze without flinching. “It is.”
The man gave him a slow, curious once-over. Not inappropriate. Just… fascinated. “You seem… stable. Strong.”
Harry raised a brow. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
The man blinked, clearly caught. “Some think Omegas lose themselves a bit. With Alpha partners. Especially ones like him.”
Harry’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. “Well, lucky for me, my Alpha respects me. And I could hex a man’s lungs inside out if he didn’t.”
The Alpha let out a surprised chuckle, paid for the identification charm, and left with an amused nod.

Harry leaned back against the counter afterward and sighed. Strange, but manageable.
By midafternoon, a few more customers came and went. Most were kind. A couple stared too long. One, an older witch, gave him a small smile and whispered, “It’s good to see someone rewriting the story.”
That stayed with him for the rest of the day.

Later that evening, back at Hogwarts in Severus’s quarters, Harry kicked off his boots and collapsed into the sofa.
Severus glanced up from the parchment he was reading, ink smudged on his fingertip. “What now?”
“Two different Alphas came into the shop today. Just… sniffing around. Literally and figuratively. One was polite. The other kept asking if the bond had made me go docile.” Harry rolled his eyes. “I don’t know what’s worse, the creepiness or the condescension.”

Severus narrowed his eyes. “Did either of them touch you?”
“No. They were subtle. Just… sniffy.”
“That’s bad enough.” Severus stood, prowled toward him, and crouched by the couch. “You still smell like mine, and that will have to suffice. If anyone tries more, I’ll make sure the Ministry has no way to identify the remains.”
Harry smirked, tugging him up for a kiss. “Relax. I’ve got a wand. And a book.”

Severus pressed his forehead gently to Harry’s, his fingers brushing down the side of his neck like he was reassuring himself Harry was still there.
“I trust you,” he murmured. “But I’ve received three letters this afternoon alone. All discreet. All from Alpha couples. Some in the Department of Mysteries. Others from old pure-blood families.”
Harry blinked. “Wait - other Alpha couples? Like... we were?”
Severus’s expression tightened. “Yes. Hiding. Like we did. But now, after the Prophet ran that article - and after your transformation - word is spreading. They’ve heard whispers about the potion. About you. And now… they want the same.”
Harry sat up straighter. “You mean - they want to become Omegas?”

Severus nodded once, solemn. “They want what we have. A future. A legal bond. A way to stay with the person they love without being forced to marry a stranger. The letters were careful, but I could read between the lines. They aren’t looking for an Omega. They’re hoping one of them can choose to become one. Just like you did.”
Harry stared, heart thudding. “Bloody hell. I didn’t expect that.”
“I did,” Severus said quietly. “Because you’re not the only one who’s been cornered by laws and expectations. You were just the first to carve a way out.”
Harry swallowed hard, staring down at their joined hands. “And what did you say?”
“I haven’t answered yet,” Severus replied. “Not until I speak to you first. It’s your story, your body, your sacrifice. If anyone’s going to help them understand the process, it should be you.”
Harry was quiet for a long moment, thumb brushing along Severus’s knuckles. “I never thought I’d be an example to anyone. Especially not for… this.”
“You are,” Severus said simply. “They’re watching us.”
Harry let out a breath, then met his eyes with a crooked smile. “Let them. We’re not hiding anymore.”
“No,” Severus agreed, voice firm and protective. “And I will never let anyone shame you for what you’ve become. You’re mine. You chose me. And I will burn the world down before I let them take that from you.”
Harry’s smile softened. “That’s good. Because I’ll never let anyone make you soft.”
Severus smirked faintly. “You already have, Potter.”
Harry leaned in, grinning. “Only where it counts.”

To Headmaster Severus Snape,
Please forgive the informality of this note. It is sent in confidence and out of desperate hope.
My partner and I have been together for eleven years. We are both Alphas. We have hidden, compromised, and lied to keep our positions and avoid forced separation.
We read between the lines of the Prophet article. We saw the shift in your bond, in Harry Potter's aura. And we’ve heard quiet whispers from those who have visited your shop. Rumors of a transformation. A choice.
We need to know: Is it real? Is it possible? Is it safe?
Please - anything you can tell us.
Yours in trust,
A. D. (Name withheld for security)

To A. D.,
Your letter was received and read with care. Know this: we do not take your situation lightly, nor your trust. We, too, once lived under the weight of hiding, fear, and watching time run thin.
Yes, the transformation potion is real. Yes, it can permanently shift an Alpha into an Omega, physically and magically. But it is not a choice to be made lightly. You must understand the costs.
• The ingredients are difficult to source. Rare. Some, ethically grey.
• The brewing process itself is unstable.
• The potion causes searing physical agony. Harry was in pain for days - muscles spasming, magic ripping through his core, glands reforming beneath his skin. He bled. He screamed.
• There is madness. A period of disorientation. He did not know his own name for a time.
• The death rate, in historic records, is 4%.
The choice to become an Omega - willingly - should never be made for love alone. It must be made for freedom. For identity. For truth.
Harry has no regrets. But he paid the price in full.
We are not forbidding you. But if you still wish to proceed, we will send you the preparation guide. Not the potion itself. No one should take this path without understanding what it takes.
Should you write again, do so with eyes wide open. And do not let the world convince you that love must fit a mold to be real.
In solidarity,
—Severus Snape
—Harry Potter

Harry

It started slowly.
A slow ache in his belly, low and liquid, like something blooming inside his bones. Harry had been at the shop, reorganizing cursed mirrors, when the heat hit him like a gust of summer air through a locked door - hot, dizzying, relentless.
He leaned against the counter, sweat beading at the back of his neck. The air felt too close. Too thick. And everything - everything - smelled like Severus.
Not his scent on a pillow or on Harry’s clothes. Not a memory.
But fresh, vivid, alive. A surge of longing punched through him, sudden and sharp, curling his toes in his boots.
“What the...” he whispered, breath catching. His hands were trembling. His magic prickled just beneath his skin, anxious and wild.
He barely remembered sending his Patronus.
He only remembered Severus appearing, face shadowed with immediate concern.
Harry didn’t say anything. He just looked at him. And that was enough.

Severus crossed the room in two strides, catching Harry as his knees gave out. The world had narrowed to the scent of him - rich, heady spice and something deeper, darker, that made Harry’s throat go dry. He wanted. Needed. Burned.
“Heat,” Severus muttered, supporting Harry with practiced gentleness. His voice was steady, but his pupils were blown wide. “It’s starting.”
Harry buried his face against Severus’s throat, groaning as the warmth between his thighs grew hot and slick. “Fuck. It hurts.”
“I know.” Fingers threaded into Harry’s hair. “I’ve got you. Let me take you home.”

Later, their bedroom. The first wave crests.
Harry was trembling on the bed, every nerve alight. He’d stripped halfway there - couldn’t stand the feel of clothes on his skin - and Severus had simply undressed behind him, slow and controlled, scent rolling off him in waves.
“You’re...” Harry gasped, when Severus settled beside him, “...holding back.”
“Yes,” Severus growled against his ear. “Because if I didn’t, I’d already have you on your back and knotted deep enough you’d feel it in your spine.”
Harry whimpered, bucking toward him.
The word knot made something inside him clench.
He hadn’t fully understood what it meant, back when Hermione had offered that book and he’d skimmed the glossary, too embarrassed to ask questions.
He understood now.
The pressure, the ache. The needy, instinctual draw to his Alpha.

“Please,” he whispered, voice cracked. “Please, Sev. I need...”
“I know,” Severus murmured, kissing his shoulder, sliding one hand between Harry’s thighs with exquisite precision. “I’ve got you, my heart. Just let go.”
The stretch burned. The fullness overwhelmed. But Severus was everywhere - hands, mouth, teeth on Harry’s neck - until Harry shattered, heat cresting like wildfire through his skin.
And when Severus finally slid home and knotted inside him, Harry cried out.
It didn’t hurt, not really. It completed him.
Held tight. Filled. Anchored.
He curled into Severus’s chest, panting, slick and shaking but blissfully sated.

“I didn’t know it would feel like this,” he mumbled into skin. “I thought it’d be embarrassing. Or weird. But it’s… you. You’re everything.”
Severus stroked down his spine, protective and silent. Possessive. Loving. Fierce.
“You’re mine,” he said quietly, voice rumbling through Harry’s body. “And I’ll take care of you. Always.”

Harry, sleepy and soft in his post-heat haze, only nodded.
“Good,” he murmured. “I don’t ever want to do that without you.”

Severus

The first light of morning bled pale gold across their sheets. The fire had died down sometime in the night, but the room was still warm - thick with the soft, unmistakable scent of bond and aftermath.
Harry was still asleep, curled beneath the blankets, breathing slow and even. A faint flush lingered high on his cheeks, and his lashes fluttered when Severus brushed sweat-damp curls from his brow.
Severus exhaled quietly, hand lingering against Harry’s temple.

He’d been prepared for the worst - heats could be overwhelming, disorienting, even dangerous for a first-time Omega. But Harry… gods, Harry had been brilliant, even in his need. Trusting. Open. Desperate in a way that had carved something raw and holy into Severus’s chest.
And now, the aftermath.
He moved slowly, unwilling to wake him. The soreness would set in soon - of that, Severus was certain. He rose from the bed, spelled on a pot of warm water, and returned with a soft cloth and a jar of salve that smelled faintly of lavender and comfrey.
Harry stirred at the first touch of the cloth, brow furrowing.
“Shhh,” Severus murmured. “You’re safe. Just let me take care of you.”
Harry blinked sleepily at him, dazed and pliant. “You don’t have to…”
“I do,” Severus said softly, dabbing between Harry’s thighs with feather-light care. “You gave me everything. Let me return the favor.”

Harry flushed but didn’t argue, only turned his face into the pillow and let out a low, contented sigh. Severus could see the faint red marks blooming across his hips, the swell of the bonding bite on his neck, already healing. His Omega. His miracle.
He applied the salve gently, watching Harry relax under the touch, his body instinctively responding to the care. Every movement was deliberate, reverent. Not because he had to - but because he wanted to. Because it mattered.
“You’re insufferable,” Harry mumbled sleepily, voice rough with sleep. “Tender and terrifying. Makes no sense.”
Severus allowed a faint smirk. “We are bonded, Potter. You’ll have to live with the consequences.”
Harry cracked one eye open. “That so?”
“Yes.” Severus kissed the mark on his neck, letting his magic curl protectively around Harry’s core. “And no one will ever touch you again. Not unless they enjoy dying very slowly.”
A laugh, hoarse and warm. “Merlin, I love you.”

Severus froze for a breath, the words landing like a shot through his ribs - painful, beautiful, too much and not enough.
He buried his face in Harry’s shoulder. “I know. Sleep more. I’ll be here.”
Harry reached blindly, fingers tangling in Severus’s hair.
And Severus let himself be held.

---

It was raining. Slow, silvery threads of water traced down the tall windows of their sitting room, muffling the world beyond. A fire crackled softly in the grate, casting flickering amber light against the stone walls. The cabin smelled of cinnamon tea, parchment, and Harry.
Severus sat in the armchair, one hand resting idle on the spine of a book he hadn't turned a page in for the last twenty minutes. His gaze, as always, was fixed elsewhere.
Harry.

Curled on the couch across from him, legs tucked beneath a blanket, hair damp from the walk in the woods, a mug of tea cradled in his palms. The gentle swell of his stomach was unmistakable now, rounded and firm beneath the loose knit jumper that Severus had learned to loathe and love in equal measure. It was worn and oversized, and it didn’t do a thing to hide how utterly radiant Harry looked.

Merlin help him, he was glowing.
Severus didn’t believe in that sort of thing. Sentiment. The nonsense in pregnancy books. But Harry… he was proof that sometimes magic was simple, and alive, and utterly human.
A ripple of movement passed under the jumper, subtle but visible. Harry froze, eyes wide.
“There it was again,” he whispered, wonder blooming across his face. “Did you see that?”
“I did.” Severus’s voice cracked despite himself. “She’s kicking again.”

Harry’s smile was devastating - bright and full of something ancient. Something Severus had never dared imagine for himself. Not until him.
“I think she likes the tea.”
“She better like tea. Her father drinks enough of it to drown a bloody hippogriff.”

Harry laughed, and Severus couldn’t help the way his fingers twitched toward him. Needing contact. Needing to anchor.
He stood, crossed the space between them, and knelt before Harry without a word.
He pressed his palm to the curve of Harry’s belly, reverent.

There was life there. Not just magic. Not just flesh. Their child. Something whole and impossible and real.
“I never thought,” he began, then stopped. Swallowed. “I never thought I’d have this.”
Harry’s smile softened. “Neither did I. Not like this. Not with you.”
Severus rested his forehead gently against the bump. “I don’t deserve it.”
“You do,” Harry said fiercely, threading his fingers through Severus’s hair. “Every single second.”

They sat in silence for a moment, wrapped in warmth and heartbeat and the steady sound of rain.
“You know,” Harry said eventually, “you’re going to be the most terrifying parent.”
Severus raised an eyebrow. “Terrifying? I’m offended.”
Harry grinned. “No you’re not.”
“No. I’m not.” Severus smirked. “But I will hex anyone who so much as thinks about bullying her.”
“She’s going to be brilliant,” Harry said softly, stroking Severus’s hair. “Smart. Stubborn. A little dark. Very loud.”
Severus kissed the swell of Harry’s stomach, then his lips. “She’ll be perfect.”

A beat of quiet passed. Then Harry chuckled.
“What?” Severus asked.
“I was just thinking… remember when I said I wanted to avoid being ‘too Omega?’”
“You failed spectacularly.”
“Shut up,” Harry said fondly, resting his head back. “I wouldn’t change a damn thing.”
Severus leaned into him, one arm wrapped protectively around Harry’s waist, the other hand splayed wide over the child growing inside him.
“Nor would I.”
And outside, the rain kept falling. Steady. Soothing.
A beginning. Not an ending at all.
