And That's the closest I've come to my heart exploding

Summary:

A lil post canon of "The Love hypothesis" where they have kids.

Notes:

Disclaimer: English is not my first language. I'm sorry for any mistakes. I also apologize for any grammatical and punctuation errors. I didn't review it, and this story took about 3 hours to write, so I didn't really pay attention to it. Also I used a lot the translator for words I didn’t knew so feel free to correct anything 🫶. Hopefully you can enjoy it just the same

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Hypothesis: If a Biologist A combines his DNA with Biologist B, the result is the most perfect human being in the world.

Adam

Adam thought he knew what it meant to love someone before meeting Olive, but after meeting her, he was certain he had no idea what love really was. However, the moment his gaze landed on the little baby, still dirty and somewhat bloody, freshly out of her mother’s womb, Adam was sure that was the closest his heart had ever come to exploding
He loved Olive, of course, but this was different — there, in his arms, was his girl, his daughter, a concept so absurd that Adam went into a trance and was only awakened when the nurse asked him to cut the baby’s umbilical cord.

“She’s beautiful,” Olive said, her eyes full of tears, looking at the little one in her arms.

Adam just nodded, his throat too tight to speak; all he could do was watch the two girls in his life. He loved them so much; he had no idea how he’d been so lucky. If he could meet his Thirty-four-year-old self and tell him everything that had happened in the past years, he was sure his past self wouldn’t believe it. To be honest, even his present self couldn’t quite believe it sometimes. Sometimes he thought it was all a dream, but it was moments like this, holding a baby who was definitely his spitting image, crying in the arms of his wife, that Adam was reminded this was no dream — this was his reality. And he wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. Those two girls in front of him were everything he had ever wanted. And, fuck, he had absolutely nothing to complain, he had everything he ever wanted.

Later, while Olive slept in the hospital bed beside him, Adam sat on an uncomfortable hospital chair. But the baby resting in his arms made any back pain worth it. Watching the little one in his lap, Adam could only think that after more than two decades studying biology, a master’s degree and a doctorate, he still couldn’t believe that he and Olive had created such a perfect little being. That little girl was half his DNA and half Olive’s. Although, looking at her, it was clear Olive’s genes had just given up — the baby (who still didn’t have a name at that moment but would later be named Maeve, despite Holden's and Malcolm's efforts to call her Beyoncé) was a copy of Adam: the nose, the black hair, she resembled Adam in every way.

“Is there a feminine version of the name Adam?” Olive had joked earlier. “Because if there is, I think we have the perfect name for her, especially since, even after nine months of making me feel sick and going through childbirth, this little girl still had the audacity to be your copy.” She pretended to sound annoyed, but Adam noticed the smile on her face the moment she said it.

“Smartass” Adam said, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “If it helps, she has your eyes.” He said it because it was true — their baby had the most beautiful green eyes in the world, exactly like Olive’s, perhaps a little lighter.

“It’s still early to tell; they might darken over time,” Olive replied.

“But if I’m very lucky, they won’t,” he whispered to Olive while they both looked at the little being in her arms.
And, as it seemed, he was extremely lucky — Maeve A. Smith-Carlsen’s eyes never changed color; they remained the same shade. To Adam’s joy, after some time freckles began to appear, just like Olive’s. Their daughter might have had exactly his appearance with subtle hints of her mother’s traits, but Maeve’s personality was exactly like Olive’s, with slight glimpses of Adam’s personality, especially when she was angry.

This little girl, who would one day become Dr. Smith-Carlsen, but contrary to everyone’s expectations, would not have a Ph.D. in biology or any exact science, but rather in Literature. Adam would later find out that he had never been prouder in his life.

But at that moment, he didn’t know any of this — just like he didn’t know how every first milestone would be so important, how he would cry like a baby the first time Maeve said “Daddy,” how that feeling would still be the same every time she called him that, how he would be so happy with her first clumsy steps, and also how, four years after Maeve, the twins would arrive — Selena and Athena (and to Olive’s happiness, Athena wasn’t an exact copy of Adam like the other two girls; she was only a partial copy but had Adam’s entire personality, unlike the others).
All of this would complete Adam and Olive’s life even more. But there, after the birth of their first daughter, Adam had only a vague idea of what everything would look like; he only briefly imagined how happiness would look from that moment on.

Looking at the little one in his arms, he only wondered how there were moments in his life when he didn’t want this at all, moments that vanished the instant he met Olive. From that day on, all he desired most was the family he now had.
At 43 years old, Adam could call himself the happiest man in the world — something that twenty years ago he would only believe possible by winning a Nobel Prize. But now, that didn’t matter anymore; his 23-year-old self would be amazed to know that the family he built was his Nobel Prize (and even better than that). He was the happiest human being on Earth, and he would never, ever trade that for absolutely anything in this world.

The End.

Notes:

I was so disapointed I could barely find any fic's like this for Ol and Adam, so I made it myself, It's not perfect Ik, but it was my first one, so feel free to point things I can improve, but be gentle I'm sensitive. Also, I did not had a clue on what they'd name their daughter, so it was quite random, I just tried my best so they follow a pattern.
Thanks for reading,
With love,
Sofia🫶
