There were moments, memories of calm in between the chaos. Where pranks on Noelle and wiffle bat swings aimed at their knees morphed into quiet evenings. Curled up next to Dess, the smell of butterscotch pie lingered as they lazily watched Elly destroy Azzy at Fight Fighters. Their head had already fallen on the older doe's knees long before she had begun to pluck her beaten guitar. Its wooden body resting so close Kris swore they could feel each note vibrate through their ears and into their teeth.
A moment of nothing, no horns, no arguments and no speaking required. Elly's bell-like laugh and Azzy's muffled shrieks fill Dess’ melody like discordant notes. Kris lets out a silent breath, chest looser than it had ever been. A feeling sits tucked inside their too human soul, indescribable, something they would never speak of feeling even if they could.
The TV flashes another character select, the guitar hums another chord, they close their eyes to the noise gently tapping patterns on fur knees.
