Work Text:
hongjoong opens the door of her bedroom, a blanket wrapped around her, shivering. she takes a look around the living room, following the smell that comes from the kitchen. living with three other people has some downsides— but she loves everything that comes with it and wouldn’t trade her roommates for anything, no matter how much they annoy her.
once she is in the kitchen, she hops on the table, which is in the middle of the kitchen and in front of the stove, observing seonghwa stirring in the pot, with her back at hongjoong.
“what are you doing here?” hongjoong asks, pulling the blanket closer to her and her arms as well, dangling her legs.
“i’m making some soup for later.” seonghwa answers, turning around and looking at hongjoong, smiling. “why are you awake? you were so tired when you got home, i thought you’ll asleep until later.” hongjoong shrugs her shoulders, but doesn’t say anything. “there were some changes of plans for wooyo and sangie, so they’ll come home earlier than planned.” seonghwa changes the topic, knowing that hongjoong won’t give her an answer. “wooyo called me this morning to let me know about their train and that it was cancelled, so her brother will drive them back home.”
hongjoong nods, but doesn’t pay attention to anything that seonghwa’s telling her; she’s too busy admiring seonghwa’s new top that she’s wearing and how the tattoos can be seen through the material. her only wish now is to trace every tattoo, thinking about nothing.
seonghwa turns to hongjoong twice, the second time taking a few steps and sliding between hongjoong’s legs, leaning over her. hongjoong leans back slowly, her blanket and arms still wrapped around herself, not knowing what to do, until her back hits the table. seonghwa is almost on top of her, hongjoong’s brain stops working— not knowing how to react, her eyes go as wide as possible. seonghwa’s neck is right above hongjoong’s face. so hongjoong does what a normal person would do: raises her face just enough to reach seonghwa’s neck and starts to kiss it in very random spots. seonghwa is taken by surprise and chokes on air, quickly standing back and looking confused at the girl under her. hongjoong follows, the blanket forgotten underneath.
“what was that?” seonghwa asks amused, raising an eyebrow.
“well, you—” hongjoong starts, but doesn’t know how to continue, she can’t think of a single reason of why she would kiss her (best) friend’s neck. “you were—” she tries to explain herself “—above me?” she finishes her explanation in a small voice, but more as a question, rather than an explanation.
“i was trying to get the salt, it was behind you on the table.” seonghwa smiles, then shakes the salt container. hongjoong feels how her blood rushes to her cheeks, and hides her face behind her hands. she wants nothing more than for the ground to swallow her, so this way she would disappear and not have to go through this encounter.
“actually, now that i think about it—” seonghwa turns back to the stove, “—no wonder people think we’re together.” and puts the salt container next to the pot.
please take me away right now. hongjoong repeats it in her mind like a mantra.
“we’re always so cuddly with each other.” seonghwa continues. “and always sharing the drinks and whatever we order,” she takes a spoon and then dips it in the pot, taking a little for hongjoong to taste, “spending so much time together.” she finishes her idea and turns around back to hongjoong, holding the spoon to hongjoong’s lips, after she blows a little in the spoon so the soup could cool down a little.
hongjoong looks at the spoon, confused, and then at seonghwa.
“open your mouth, dummy.” seonghwa playfully rolls her eyes. hongjoong grips the edge of the counter with one hand, while with the other, tries to take the spoon. seonghwa just shakes her head and playfully slaps hongjoong’s hand away.
“just open your mouth.” seonghwa insists, which makes hongjoong to grip the edge of the counter with both hands, opening her mouth again, allowing seonghwa to put the spoon on her lips.
hongjoong tastes the soup, but she’s being too distracted by seonghwa’s behaviour to even pay attention to how the soup tastes. seonghwa waits patiently for hongjoong’s opinion (full on boba eyes mode looking at her). after a few seconds of silence, seonghwa shakes hongjoong’s thigh as a way to get her attention back, but it does more damage than control, her hand being on hongjoong’s bare thigh.
please kill me now. is the only thought going through hongjoong’s head. she’s too lost in whatever is happening and whatever seonghwa’s is trying to (not) do, to even think about what she tasted.
“so?” seonghwa tries once again, this time shaking the younger’s thigh even more frantically.
“it’s good.” hongjoong dangles her legs even quicker. “yeah—” she clumsily tucks her hair behind her ears “—it’s good.”
“cute.” seonghwa mutters and turns back to the stove.
it’s silence between the two of them now. not an awkard one, they are never awkward with each other— most of the times they find the silence between them comforting. still hongjoong feels a little bit different now; while it's not awkward for her at all, she can’t stop thinking about the way seonghwa reacted. everyone in their friend group thinks that something is happening between the two of them. while some of them thinks they’re dating, based on how most of the time they are acting when they hang out, the others assume it's noting more than a friends with benefits type of a situation, due to both of them always being loud and clear about their crushes on other people. and yet they are always being seen together, always sharing the courses’ notes, sharing clothes, always going on days trips.
“do you think something is missing?” seonghwa questions, stiring lazily in the pout, in a way that she is implying that an ingredient is indeed missing.
hongjoong shakes her head; her eyes are on the floor, not noticing that seonghwa is not looking at her.
“are you sure?” seonghwa turns around suddenly and goes back between hongjoong legs.
hongjoong looks up, trying to figure out what’s happening— but before she can realize, seonghwa is again leaning slowly over her, which automatically makes hongjoong lean back again, seonghwa’s left arm going behind hongjoong’s back, somehow helping her.
it’s just seonghwa. putting the salt container back. it’s just salt. when hongjoong's back hits the table, she tries to calm herself down by slowly breathing, waiting for seonghwa to be done with whatever she is doing.
but seonghwa stops moving once she’s low enough for her face to be close to hongjoong’s.
“are you 100% convinced an important ingredient is not missing?” seonghwa whispers, her lips almost brushing against hongjoong’s. the younger’s whole body freezes, her mind stops working. torn between fighting the urge to move and escape from seonghwa’s hold and the desire to put her arms around seonghwa’s neck and bring her closer, hongjoong can feel her whole body burning, the back of her neck sweating.
“kiss me.” hongjoong hears herself whispering, instead of answering seonghwa’s question, without realising what she is actually saying.
“what?” seonghwa’s eyes widen. hongjoong licks her own lips.
“please.” she begs, with a sudden burst of confidence, and puts her arms around seonghwa’s neck.
“are you sure?” hongjoong nods and closes her eyes, puckering her lips, waiting and hoping that seonghwa will do something— anything, before hongjoong loses all the confidence (that she actually really doesn’t have). seonghwa slowly closes the space between them, softly pecking hongjoong’s lips, and then slowly backing up. it happens so quick, hongjoong doesn’t even realize nor does she have time to react, so she just mumbles “more”.
and who is seonghwa to deny any of her wishes? she leans down again, leaving one arm next to hongjoong — so she can hold her weight on it — and with the other arm cupping hongjoong’s cheek. she takes a look in hongjoong’s eyes once more to make sure that she didn’t change her mind and leans down once again. hongjoong, once very overwhelmed about the whole situation, exhales through her nose when seonghwa’s lips are on hers. she feels her whole body relaxing and her hands move — without her thinking — in seonghwa’s hair. despite her previous behavior, she is the one who deepens the kiss, running the tip of her tongue on seonghwa’s lower lip, making the latter open her mouth and sigh, moving the hand that is on hongjoong cheek under one of her thighs, raising it up on the counter. they are lost in the kiss, hongjoong’s head is thrown back and seonghwa leaves kisses along her jaw and neck, that both of them abruptly stop when they suddenly hear two people gasping.
“i told you, they are dating, but you never listen to me.” yeosang exclaims, proud that she was right the whole time.
“on the kitchen table! guys!!” wooyoung exclaims, exaggerating more by putting her hands on her face.
seonghwa stands up, grabbing hongjoong’s hands and helping her to sit up.
“no, that’s not-” seonghwa tries to explain herself.
“oh my god, on the kitchen table!” wooyoung cuts her off, turns 180 degrees, and goes to the bathroom.
“wooyo, wait-” hongjoong tries as well, but in vain.
“she’s such a dramatic person.” yeosang shakes her head, following wooyoung with her eyes, and then turns back to the two girls, “so, what’s happening here?”
