Work Text:

"I don't know if this is a good idea," Seb started, her voice getting higher from nerves.

"Shh," Hawke insisted as she put the dress she'd bought over her skinny frame. "You're going to look much better, trust me, Seb."

"If you say so."

Hawke hummed as she applied kohl over Seb's eyes, grabbing her by the chin to keep her still as she tried to squirm, a bundle of nervous energy. "Stay there," she whispered, voice soft around the edges as she gave the last finishing touches to her partner's new look. She stepped to the side and brought her to a mirror: there, Sebastian Vael did not look like a Chantry brother, but a Chantry sister out in lay clothes; a modest black dress fell down to her ankles, with her hair brushed down towards her face, framing her forehead and kohl making her blue eyes pop out even more.

Seb stared for several moments, quiet, thinking. She posed here and there, turned around, twirled the skirt of the dress in her hand before she turned back to Hawke.

"You make it look much more… natural," she finally said, almost disappointed.

Hawke snorted and elbowed her. "Oh, please. I have potions to thank for that, you're barely even starting!"

"Mm." She started to pace around Hawke's room, her face twisted in thought. "I really… I do not know if this would be approved by Elthina, by the Chantry, at all. What the Maker gave me should be what I get to have, nothing more, nothing less. I am not being pious if I—"

Hawke grabbed her arm and forced her to stop in her tracks. "I'm pretty sure you don't think I'm straying from the Maker's light by being myself, Seb," she drawled.

"It's different," she said. "I'm a Chantry brother. I'm the Prince of Starkhaven. You are…"

"I was no one before, yes," she agreed. "But surely you can be a Chantry sister and the Princess of Starkhaven. I think they'd fit you much better, personally." She flicked her on the nose.

Seb groaned softly and relaxed, leaned against her. "It is just too much. It is terrifying, Marian."

She pulled her into a hug, rubbed down her back. "I know. I know. But you'll be alright." She kissed her on the forehead. "It's going to be okay."
