Chasing Thunder, Catching Stars

Summary:

When Master Makarov decides it's time to shake up the usual teams, Laxus and Freed finds themselves reluctantly assigned to a mission with Natsu, Gray, and the guild's newest member—Lucy Heartfilia. What should have been a routine job quickly spirals into chaos as clashing personalities, dangerous enemies, and buried secrets come to the surface.

Meanwhile, Laxus Dreyar, ever aloof and prideful, finds himself unexpectedly curious of the celestial mage. What begins as a game an arrogant dragon slayer amused by the fiery courage of a stubborn blonde slowly turns into something far more complicated.

As dark guilds move in the shadows and Lucy's mysterious connection to forbidden magic begins to unravel, alliances are tested and loyalties strained. For Laxus, what started as simple interest becomes a dangerous entanglement that forces him to choose between his pride, his guild, and the girl who challenges him at every turn.

In a world where one wrong move can mean losing everything, trust is the strongest magic of all.

Chapter One: Storm on the Horizon

The Fairy Tail guild hall thrummed with its usual chaos, a chorus of laughter, drunken shouting, and the occasional crash of a table giving way under a fight. To Lucy Heartfilia, though, the noise had already become a kind of background music. She sat tucked away at a small table near the corner, book in hand, her drink cooling beside her untouched.

The tome she read was thick and weathered, its spine cracking with every turn of a page. A reward from her last solo job, it was less a story and more an encyclopedia—an entire archive of ancient magical artifacts and relics. The yellowed paper smelled faintly of dust and ink, and Lucy found the scent comforting.

She sipped at her drink, flipping through a chapter on enchanted weapons, when a familiar voice cut through the din.

"Yo, Lucy!" Gray waved as he walked over, already shrugging off his coat before dropping into the chair across from her. "How'd your job go?"

Lucy closed the book with a soft thump, smiling brightly at him. "Easy peasy. Honestly, you and Natsu would've been bored out of your minds. Nothing but dusty halls, old statues, and silence. I loved it, though." She laughed lightly.

Gray leaned back in his chair with a smirk. "Yeah, sounds about right. Can't imagine anyone in the guild being into that sort of thing—except Levy. Maybe Freed, too. Guy's a bookworm when he's not drawing runes all over the place."

Lucy tilted her head, filing that name away. "Freed, huh?" She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Well, it paid well, and I managed to add a few new books to my collection. That's always a win for me."

"I swear, you've got more books than anyone I've ever met. One day, we're gonna find out your apartment walls are made out of 'em." Gray chuckled, shaking his head.

Their laughter softened into an easy silence. Across the room, Erza had claimed her usual spot with a dessert in hand, as unbothered by the chaos as ever. Near the bar, Natsu was already yelling at Elfman about who was stronger, and Happy's little voice chimed in with cheerful insults. Lucy smiled faintly, watching the guild unravel into its usual storm of noise and energy.

She still felt like the outsider sometimes. Not because anyone treated her badly, but because she held herself back. Fairy Tail had welcomed her, but Lucy wasn't quick to trust not after what she'd left behind. She had secrets, ones she wasn't ready to share. For now, she kept them folded tight against her heart, savoring the fragile sense of belonging she'd found here.

Gray suddenly pushed back from the table, his shirt already halfway off as Natsu's taunts finally got to him. Lucy sighed, not even surprised, and Erza muttered something sharp under her breath before returning to her cake. Within seconds, the guild dissolved into chaos again, chairs flying, mugs crashing, flames flaring alongside ice.

Lucy rolled her eyes, a laugh escaping her as she reopened her book. This was Fairy Tail. Loud, rowdy, chaotic… and hers.

But then the air shifted.

"Alright, brats, listen up!"

Makarov's voice thundered from the second-floor balcony, silencing the guild like a sudden storm. Even Gray and Natsu froze mid-swing, blinking up at their master. Lucy's gaze followed the small figure standing above them, a man whose presence filled the hall far beyond his stature. For someone so cheerful most of the time, his authority could still cut sharper than a blade.

"It's time for some of you to get uncomfortable," Makarov announced, eyes sweeping the room. "Fairy Tail isn't just about sticking with your friends or your habits. It's about growing stronger together. Trust. Survival. That means learning to fight alongside people you don't know or maybe don't like due to not understanding one another."

A ripple of unease passed through the crowd. Lucy felt her stomach dip as murmurs began.

"That's why I've drawn up new teams. You'll work with people you barely know. People you might not like. Loners with chatterboxes, tacticians with hotheads. You'll learn each other, or you'll fall on your faces trying. Either way, it'll be good for you."

"The lists are final. No complaints, no changes," Makarov finished, folding his arms. Then, as easily as if he hadn't just upended the room, he vaulted from the balcony and vanished into his office.

The guild held its breath for a beat then the doors slammed open.

The storm walked in.

He was taller than most, shoulders broad, his very presence crackling in the air. A jagged scar cut across his face, and faint sparks of lightning danced around his fists. The air grew taut, like the moment before a storm breaks.

Lucy had heard the whispers. Laxus. One of Fairy Tail's strongest. Dangerous. Untouchable. The guild parted for him instinctively, like water giving way to stone.

"This is bullshit, old man!" His voice cracked like thunder as he stormed across the room, lightning arcing faintly off his skin. He didn't bother looking at anyone, his fury aimed solely at Makarov's door as he slammed inside. The walls rattled with the impact.

The guild, oddly enough, went back to its usual rhythm as if nothing had happened. But Lucy kept watching.

Mira pinned the new lists on the request board, and Lucy slipped closer, heels clicking softly against wood. Her eyes scanned the parchment, finding her own name and the names beside it.

Natsu. Gray. Happy. Freed. And Laxus.

Her heart stuttered. She could already imagine the fireworks waiting to go off between those personalities.

Her gaze lingered on Freed's name. She knew nothing of him. He wasn't the kind to make noise or draw attention, which meant he was either forgettable by choice or dangerous enough that his silence was its own statement. Either way, it's worth remembering.

"I can't believe this."

The voice came from beside her, low, precise, and edged with disdain. Lucy turned slightly to find him tall, mint-green hair pulled back into a loose ponytail, crimson coat resting against his shoulders. He held a book of runes, its pages fluttering though the air around them was still.

"What was the old man thinking?" Freed muttered, almost to himself. His eyes flicked toward Natsu and Gray, who were already back to bickering. "Pairing us with them?"

Lucy stayed silent, curious. His words were sharp, measured, but underneath was something else disgust, maybe. Or disdain carefully kept in check.

Then his gaze shifted toward her. "Who is Lucy?"

She smiled faintly, turning her eyes back to the parchment. "Standing right here."

His attention sharpened on her, studying her as though she were a puzzle piece he couldn't quite place. Before he could reply, the air shifted again.

A shadow fell across the board.

Laxus.

His storm-blue eyes locked on Lucy, unreadable but heavy. "So you're the one," he said, his voice lower now, quieter but no less powerful. "The new girl who thinks she belongs here."

Lucy tilted her head slightly, refusing to flinch. He was testing her, pressing his presence against hers like a predator circling prey.

"I belong wherever I decide," she replied softly, but her voice carried.

The guild seemed to freeze. Not open defiance, but not submission either.

Laxus stepped closer, his magic brushing against her skin like static. "You've got guts. But guts don't mean survival. Do you know who I am?"

Lucy's lips curved into the faintest smirk. "Big. Blonde. Scarred. Probably thinks the world should clear a path when he walks through a door." Her amber eyes glimmered. "But I don't step aside for anyone."

A hush rippled through the hall.

For a heartbeat, only the crackle of magic filled the silence. Laxus's aura pressed harder, sparking faintly against hers. Waiting for her to fold.

She didn't.

"Careful," he murmured at last, voice sharp with warning but tinged with interest. "Most people break before they talk to me like that."

"Then maybe you've only been talking to the wrong people."

His jaw tightened, then his mouth twitched into something not quite a smile, something sharper. "This isn't over." He turned, the storm fading to a simmer as he strode away.

Lucy let out a quiet breath, keeping her expression calm. She hadn't won, but she hadn't lost either.

Beside her, Freed's grip on his sword tightened, his green eyes sharp with disapproval. "You dare insult Laxus like that?" His magic stirred faintly in the air, precise and cold. "Reckless doesn't begin to describe it."

Lucy met his gaze, celestial magic humming faintly in answer. "Reckless? No. Intentional. I wanted to see how he'd react." She held up the mission parchment, pressing it lightly into his hand. "Now I know."

His jaw clenched. "You tested him? If you push him, you push me."

"Then consider this your first lesson," Lucy replied evenly. "I don't bend just because someone throws power in my face. Not him. Not you. If that bothers you, don't show up."

The air thickened between them, two wills pressing without striking. Lucy realized Freed wasn't the type to back down, and neither was she.

Gray appeared at her side, his glare fixed on Freed. "Do we have a problem here?"

Lucy forced a smile, conscious of the eyes watching them. "No problem. Just… getting acquainted. After all, this is our first mission together." She tilted her head, her tone lighter now. "With a rune mage and another dragon slayer, things could get… interesting."

Freed's eyes narrowed slightly at her words, his magic flickering.

"Laxus? A dragon slayer?" Gray frowned, glancing at her.

Lucy tucked that reaction away. So the guild didn't know. "Maybe I was mistaken," she said with a sheepish laugh.

Gray let it slide, but Lucy could feel Laxus's eyes burning into her from across the hall. Watching. Measuring.

Gray leaned closer. "Let's go. Too many eyes on us."

Lucy nodded. "Right. Let's grab Natsu and Happy—we can go over the mission together." She slipped into her usual cheerful tone, though her pulse hadn't quite settled.

As they left, Lucy could still feel the storm lingering at her back. Laxus wasn't going to let this go. Not when she'd seen through him. Not when she knew something he hadn't meant to share.

And Lucy had the sinking feeling this was only the beginning.
