Chapter Text
“That was quite a fight yesterday wasn’t it, Dave?”
The voice filled Sonic’s living room as the TV flickered with the images of two news reporters.
“Sure was Michael!” The news reporter called Dave replied, his cliche presenter voice far too loud and obnoxious to be discussing an attack that could have killed hundreds of civilians, “Sonic and his team were on it like always!”
Amy Rose let out a scoff from where she sat on the floor. She had barely been paying attention to the TV beforehand but as usual, the news had drawn her away from her novel that now lay abandoned on the living room floor beside her.
The news reporters kept discussing the events of yesterday’s fight, showing images on the screen from the wreckage that had been caused after the battle.
Eggman had made a right mess of the place, which wasn’t really anything out of the ordinary, but yesterday he must have been particularly angry as Amy watched the images flash across the screen, showing just how much damage he had caused.
Amy was barely paying much attention to what the reporters were actually saying, only catching snippets of their conversation. Even with her divided attention, Amy must have heard the reporters mention the phrase ‘Team Sonic’, at least 10 times in the span of minute.
It was a stupid name in Amy’s opinion, and even Sonic had to agree. It really didn’t represent the goal of what Amy, Sonic and their friends were trying to achieve. They didn’t want to be painted as some sort of group of heroes. What they really wanted is for people to actually try to do something to stop Eggman from attacking their home every couple of days.
But once the media had learnt they could capitalise off this ‘misfit group of heroes’, hope for actually stopping Eggman in any way other than brute force seemed to slip away as each day passed.
Almost every news story these days was about ‘Team Sonic’, to the point that even just being outside these days was enough to get any of Sonic’s friends an interview on live television. Honestly, Amy found it incredibly exhausting, almost more exhausting than actually fighting Eggman.
Sonic had confided in her many times that he believed all this media attention was some sort of elaborate plan by Eggman to just tire them all out so they wouldn’t be able to fight him, and Amy couldn’t even find it in herself to disagree.
While it was unlikely, the obnoxious media attention had now been going on for over two years, and Amy was sick of it all. She had to hide herself away from the world, donning a persona just to step outside. She hated it, but it was better than the field day the media would have if she ever let that mask crack.
It was a necessary safety precautions that she grew to despise more and more each day.
Amy was quickly ripped from her thoughts as she heard Sonic drop down into his couch just above where Amy sat cross legged on the floor. He had clearly heard Amy scoff from the other room, something he had become rather accustomed to while watching the news and came to join her.
“Look who got on the news again!” Sonic exclaimed with a laugh, poking fun at the scowl that crossed Amy’s face.
“I’m so sick of this,” Amy muttered under her breath, watching herself on the screen use her Piko Piko Hammer to smash on of Eggman’s Badnik’s
“And there is Amy Rose!” exclaimed the reporter named Michael, “Amazing in battle as always!”
Footage of yesterday’s battle started to play on the TV screen, the videos showing Amy, Sonic and Tails fighting a swarm of Badnik’s.
“I don’t understand why they insist on having 14 different camera angles on out fights instead of actually helping,” Amy blurted out, resting her chin in one of her hands as a grumpy look crossed her face.
“I don’t understand most of what the media does,” Sonic replied, letting out an exasperated chuckled, “Although it would be nice if those cameras could shoot lasers at the Badnik’s.”
Amy hummed in agreement as another video appeared on the screen of Amy and Sonic high fiving at the end of the battle, and Amy cringed. She could feel Sonic stiffen behind her, both hedgehog’s bracing themselves for the comments that the video was about to elicit.
“And there is Sonic with Amy!” Dave proclaimed, “The rumours about those two!”
Michael laughed at this comment, “Personally, I have bets over when they are going to announce they are dating. They would make such a cute couple!”
Dave looked like he was about to add his own unwanted opinion on the matter before the TV was abruptly turned off.
Sonic let out a strained sigh that Amy wholeheartedly understood. He stood up from the couch and started pacing, running a gloved hand through his cobalt quills.
This had become a common occurrence between the two. They would just be casually hanging out together, and some stranger would make a random comment on how they would be such a cute couple. Now, even though they were out of the public eye, completely alone, they still had to put up with the almost constant speculation about their relationship.
It had been going on for years, people speculating about their relationship as if they weren’t real people with real lives. It was always annoying, but they got used to it. But lately, it had been getting much worse.
The truth was that Sonic and Amy were just best friends just like they had been for years, nothing more. But no matter how many times they told reporters and interviewers that, they always seemed to twist their words.
They consistently took extra precautions to ensure that there was absolutely nothing romantic about their behaviour, to the point they now rarely hung out together in public anymore, but that only seemed to make the rumors spiral more.
Apparently, a hidden romance was very appealing to the general public as well as the media.
That’s why, most afternoons, they would go over to each other’s house to hang out. This afternoon was an example of that, with Amy visiting Sonic to make sure he was alright after the battle yesterday. He had been fine, physically, but right now the speculation on the news seemed to be harming him mentally.
“Why do they keep doing this?” Sonic groaned, continuing his pacing in front of the now blank TV.
“Good headlines I suppose,” Amy replied, equally as annoyed as Sonic, “There is really nothing we can do about it apparently.”
Sonic let out another loud sigh as he stopped his pacing, instead deciding to collapse down onto the ground next to Amy.
“I’m sick of this, Ames,” Sonic complained, “Why do they always have to ruin everything?”
Amy hummed in response. She understood Sonic’s frustration. What at first had seemed like something that was slightly inconvenient had now spiraled so out of control that whenever the two were questioned about their fights, all of the questions seemed to allure to some sort of forbidden love the two were hiding.
“Hopefully it won’t last long,” Amy answered, knowing it was a pointless desire, “Maybe they will get actual news to cover soon.”
Sonic chuckled in response, rubbing a hand over his face. He seemed exhausted, but it had nothing to do with the yesterday’s fight.
“You know they will still find a way to make it about our supposed secret relationship,” Sonic added, causing Amy to laugh in response.
He was right of course; the media wasn’t going to let this up. It had been going on for years, why would they suddenly stop now.
Distractedly, Amy glanced up at the clock that hung above the TV before noticing the time.
It had just turned 5, meaning Amy needed to leave. She had other places to be.
“It’ll be fine, Sonic,” she stated, pushing herself up from the floor and straightening her red dress, “We will figure it out.”
Sonic handed Amy her book as he stood up as well, mumbling something that Amy couldn’t make out. He walked her over to the door, giving her a quick hug goodbye and wishing her a safe trip home.
As far as Sonic knew, that was where Amy was going. He had no reason to speculate otherwise, nobody did. She had worked hard to keep this a secret from everyone, scared the media would steal another thing away from her.
As Amy began her journey in a direction that was defiantly to towards her own house, she couldn’t help but think that both her and Sonic would need to work something out about these rumours. There was only so much more of them Amy could take, and they really weren’t the main thing that Amy wanted to focus on right now.
Amy’s grip on her bag tightened as she walked faster, hoping to avoid any lurking paparazzi. A chill ran down her spine as she entered the more metropolitan area, both from the early autumn cold and the fear of being caught.
It wasn’t like Amy was doing anything wrong, she was certainly allowed to go where she wanted to. She was an adult, she could make her own decisions. But that didn’t stop her heart from skipping a beat as she walked the all too familiar streets.
Once she finally made it out of the claustrophobic alleyways, Amy found herself in a less crowded area of the city. A row of unassuming terrace houses lined the empty street as the sun set lower in the sky.
Taking another deep breath in, Amy made her way up to one of the more rundown houses, pausing for a second to calm her racing heart before tentatively knocking on the door. She waited for a couple more seconds, smoothing down her pink quills and glancing around to make sure she wasn’t followed before the front door opened just enough for the person behind it to recognise Amy.
A gloved hand enclosed around Amy’s wrist before pulling her inside. Amy let out a quiet chuckle as she stumbled into the dimly lit house, hearing the lock on the door click as it was closed shut once more.
“Tightening security, I see, Blaze,” Amy quipped, watching as the purple cat pulled back the curtain of a window to make sure Amy wasn’t followed.
“You know how it is,” Blaze replied, a slight bitterness in her voice, “I don’t know about you, but I don’t really want to have to deal with any more of those rumors.”
Amy let out a laugh as Blaze made her way over to her. Blaze gently cupped Amy’s face in one of her hands, her eyes meticulously scanning the hedgehog’s face.
“Heard about the fight yesterday,” Blaze murmured, checking Amy’s face for any noticeable injuries, “Sorry I couldn’t be there.”
“It’s alright,” Amy replied, trying her hardest not to blush Blaze’s finger brushed along her jaw, “we got it all under control.”
Blaze hummed in approval, dropping her hand from Amy’s face, much to the hedgehog’s disappointment.
“Is Silver here?” Amy asked, gazing around the sparsely decorated house for a sigh of the other hedgehog.
Blaze and Silver had ended up needing to visit Amy and her friends so often recently that they had decided to buy a small house in order to stay closer to the danger that seemed to increase on the daily. Amy had no complaints about this new development, although she hated how both Blaze and Silver were now subjected to the same media treatment that she was.
Despite the constant danger in their new, temporary home, both Blaze and Silver often needed to return to their respective dimensions and points of time to deal with any problems that had arisen there. That had seemed to be the reason Blaze couldn’t fight in the battle yesterday, Amy guessed. She had probably been sorting out some issue in the Sol Dimension.
“No,” Blaze replied, interrupting Amy’s train of thought, “he left to go sort something out in the future timeline this morning.”
Amy couldn’t help but notice the sly smile that spread across Blaze’s face as she talked. Even in the darkness of the entryway to the rest of the house, Amy could make out the slight flush that had appeared on Blaze’s cheeks.
“Beautiful,” was all Amy could think as she felt Blaze’s hand come to rest on the back of Amy’s neck.
Blaze was slightly taller than Amy, a height difference that was barely even noticeable to most but seemed to become even more apparent as the cat gazed down at Amy. Amy didn’t even wait to leave the foyer before placing a hand on Blaze’s shoulder and pulling the other woman towards her.
Fireworks seemed to go off in Amy’s brain as her lips locked with Blaze’s. She had forgotten how much she had missed this.
Blaze’s fingers dug into the back of Amy’s neck her other hand coming to rest on Amy’s waist, pulling the hedgehog closer as Amy let out a small sigh at the desired contact. Her lips moved against Blaze’s like they had so many times before, her brain going into autopilot as she brought her other hand up to Blaze’s cheek.
It had only been a couple days since they had last seen each other but the kiss was hungry, almost desperate. Blaze let out a quiet moan that caused Amy to only kiss her deeper. It felt choreographed, a performance that had been practiced so much the two were in sync.
Amy pulled away slightly, allowing herself to take in Blaze, her eyes greedily taking in the cat’s appearance.
She was dressed in her usual clothes, probably meaning that she hadn’t been home from her dimension from very long. However, there were slight differences from Blaze’s regal persona she often presented to the world. Her hair was more unkept, her hair tie barely holding its place in her familiar ponytail.
Amy reached up for Blaze’s hair, her hand leaving the cat’s cheek. She gently pulled the hair tie from Blaze’s hair, causing her purple hair to fall and frame her face in a way that took Amy’s breath away despite the numerous times she had seen her like this.
She ran her hands through Blaze’s hair, her fingers itching to leave her gloves to properly feel the softness of Blaze’s fur. Before she could even start to pull her gloves off, Blaze spoke again.
“Do you have any idea how much I missed you?” she asked, her voice alluring as she gazed at Amy with her golden eyes.
“I think I can take a guess, Princess,” Amy responded, admiring the way Blaze’s eyes seemed to sparkle in the dark foyer, as the nickname slipped from her mouth.
Blaze gave a soft laugh. She had always hated being called ‘Princess’ and had told people not to refer to her as such, but Amy had seemed to breach those rules a long time ago.
This time it was Blaze who pulled Amy into the kiss, her mouth hot against Amy’s. The kiss had now melted into something more gentle, more tender than the hungriness from earlier.
They stayed like that for a while, and once they did pull apart, Amy simply rested her head on Blaze’s shoulder as the purple cat embraced her.
Amy could only think about how right this all felt. It felt right to have her lips pressed against Blaze’s, to have her head resting against her shoulder. The thought that this moment would have to end so soon almost brought Amy to tears.
Blaze must have been able to sense Amy’s sadness as she only pulled the hedgehog closer to her, gently carding her fingers through Amy’s quills.
“I hate having to hide this,” Amy whispered into Blaze’s neck.
Blaze didn’t respond but Amy could tell she agreed. They had both had this same conversation more times than they could count. It always went back to the same reasoning for hiding. It would be too much attention, too much questioning. Neither of them wanted that. But Amy couldn’t help but feel like it always seemed to be her fault.
Sure, there had been speculation about Blaze and Silver’s relationship from time to time, but nothing to the extent of Amy and Sonic’s. The two had talked about coming clean about their relationship and how that may stop the rumors surrounding the potential romantic feeling between Amy and Sonic, but Amy was pretty sure it would only make the rumours directed at her much worse.
Besides, she didn’t know if she was ready to have to publicly come out to literally everyone. Blaze had told her that there was no pressure to do anything, but Amy still felt the intensity of the situation mounting every day.
“It’s alright, Amy,” Blaze reassured, registering Amy’s emotions, “we will figure it out.”
Amy quietly hummed, content with just letting Blaze run her fingers through her quills for the moment. The darkness of Blaze’s home seemed to comfort her, giving her a place to hide away from prying eyes, allowing her to be herself just this once.
Amy could feel Blaze shift slightly, pulling away to get a better look at the clock that hung by the front door.
“It’s getting late,” Blaze remarked, still holding Amy loosely in her arms, “Do you want some dinner?”
Amy nodded in response, grabbing Blaze’s hand as the two walked toward the small kitchen.
Blaze reached towards a light switch, lighting up the room for Amy’s benefit. Blaze was usually more comfortable in the dark, her vision not very impacted by the lower light.
With the light now turned on, everything seemed much more real. It filled Amy with an intense feeling of happiness as she watched Blaze moved around the cramped kitchen, collecting whatever ingredients they need to make their dinner.
A small smile spread across Amy’s face, her earlier worries dissipating. They were in this together. Whatever happened, they had each other.
That was enough for Amy.
Notes:
Thank you so much for reading!!!!
I have wanted to write this fic for so long but I literally had no idea how to do it or how it would be received. But then I listened to Laufey's song, Too Little, Too Late, when it came out not long ago and realised how perfectly it fit my idea for this fic so that is now what the title and chapter names are based off. It was literally a sign I needed to write it so here it finally is!!!! I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it!
Mwah!
Chapter 2: I read in the papers he's someone the girl's dream about
Summary:
After another intrusive encounter with the media, Amy is only barely holding it together. Surely by now it would be time to implement a plan that would only be considered as a last resort, no matter how insane that plan might be.

Chapter Text
A loud boom reverberated through the trees as a Badnik exploded upon the impact of Amy’s hammer.
The force of the explosion pushed her back, slamming her into the trunk of a particularly large tree.
She groaned at the impact, the back of her head harshly colliding with the rough bark. The trees of the clearing seemed to swim before her as she brought a tentative hand to the back of her head.
Amy glanced down at her fingers. No blood; she would be fine.
A guttural scream to her right brought Amy out of her daze. The sound of metal scraping against metal rang in her ears as she caught a glimpse of a red echidna rushing forward out of the corner of her eye.
Pushing herself away from the tree, trying to ignore the taste of bile in her mouth, Amy raced after Knuckles, swinging her hammer over her shoulder with a grunt.
The clearing was now filled with Badnik’s, another surprise attack by Eggman only a couple days after his last one. Sure, it wasn’t unusual for Eggman to attack multiple times a week, but two attacks in three days of such grandeur was a troubling thought that Amy would have to unpack later after she finished kicking robot butt.
A blue flash danced across Amy’s vision, her eyes still trying to adjust to the visual overstimulation that only caused her already pounding headache to worsen.
She quickly shook her head, pushing her nausea to the back of her mind as she brought her hammer down on another Badnik.
She had now reached Knuckles’ side, continuing to attack the Badnik’s that threatened to overwhelm the echidna warrior with the sheer amount that now approached him.
“Thanks,” Knuckles grunted appreciatively as the two now stood back to back, holding off the oncoming swarm of Badnik’s.
Swinging her hammer, Amy successfully battered away the swarm. The Badnik’s crashed into each other on the impact of Amy’s hammer, causing a chain reaction of explosions to follow.
Metal littered the previously undisturbed area of nature, the grass now black with burn marks and oil spillage.
Amy tried to focus on the burnt grass rather than the droplets of red that also now coloured the green carpet. She didn’t know what it was and could only hope with was anything but blood.
Amy quickly glanced at Knuckles, who nodded back at her. The two of them ran together, moving towards their main target.
Towering over the trees in the clearing was the main Badnik. It was much larger than any of the smaller robots, and much more dangerous. The constant blue blur that almost fully engulfed it showed that Sonic was still working hard to defeat it but the onslaught of smaller Badnik’s was making it much more difficult.
A Badnik exploded to Amy’s right as Knuckles’ fist tore through the metal exoskeleton. Amy followed suit, swinging her hammer around in a perfect circle, wiping out seven Badnik’s all at once.
“Show off,” she heard Knuckles tease beside her.
The red echidna then proceeded to attack eight Badnik’s all at once, a satisfied smile crossing his face a broken sheets of metal littered the ground around him.
“Oh, you’re on!” Amy challenged, glad to have a reason to forget about the pounding against her skull.
The two continued to destroy the Badnik’s, clearing the area so Sonic would be able to focus solely on the main Badnik that now seemed very annoyed by Sonic’s persistent presence.
Glancing up from the robot graveyard that had started to form around her, Amy furrowed her brow up at Sonic. He wasn’t really attacking the Badnik with his full strength. It was almost as if her was distracting it…
As if on cue, the whir of an engine filled the clearing, the noise a stark difference from the sound of battle.
“Incoming!” yelled a voice from above as Tails nosedived his plane toward the larger Badnik causing it to almost fall over from the distraction.
The Tornado managed to fly out of the way of the Badnik’s lasers, with Tails expertly swerving the plane between the shots.
“Nice one fox!” Knuckles cheered from somewhere on Amy’s left.
It was then followed with the sound of more metal being crushed at Knuckles picked back up his punching spree. Amy brought her hammer down on another Badnik, tactfully navigating herself through the hoards of Badnik’s, leading them away from where Sonic fought.
As she moved away from the larger Badnik, the blue blur raced past her once more, seemingly retreating from the robot. A knowing smile crossed Amy’s face as she signalled for Knuckles to follow her lead, leaving the main Badnik completely unprotected by any of the smaller Badnik’s.
As she swung her hammer around once again, destroying another wave of Badnik’s, Amy started silently counting in her head.
Three…
Knuckles let out another cry, followed by the sounds of explosion as another Badnik fell victim to his fists.
Two…
Tails flew over where Amy stood, yelling instructions that got lost over the noise of the fight.
One…
Just as expected, a flash of blue raced past both Amy and Knuckles. Electricity rippled through the air, causing Amy’s fur to stand on end as Sonic moved so fast, her eyes couldn’t keep up.
Amy’s head throbbed as Sonic spin dashed straight into the face of the Badnik, causing such an impact that Amy was pushed backward to the ground by the force.
She glanced up as time seemed to stop. The Badnik swayed on the spot for a second, teetering in place before crashing down to the ground.
Dust and smoke filled the air, making it hard for Amy to breathe and see, as she pushed herself to her feet. Her grip was still tight on her hammer as she glanced around, coughing and desperately trying to make out anything through her blurry vision that was not made any better dusty haze she now stood in.
Even through the haze of smoke, Amy could sense the distinct lack of further attack, the few remaining Badnik’s most likely called back by an enraged Eggman once again.
The fight had been won once again.
As the dust and smoke slowly settled, Amy could make out the red colouring of an echidna.
“Nice one!” Knuckles exclaimed as he moved towards Amy, patting her on the back with enough force to push her face first into the dirt.
Her head spun at the motion as she stumbled smiling, catching the look of concern that flitted across Knuckles’ face.
After regaining her composure, she turned around to see the echidna giving her a small smirk.
“Not too bad yourself,” she replied, before turning around once more at the sound of footsteps rapidly approaching her.
“We did it!” cheered Tails, giving Amy a high-five before giving Knuckles a fist bump.
Amy let out a small laugh as she hoisted her hammer over her shoulder, “Of course we did! Like Eggman is going to beat us!”
The dusty haze had almost fully died down as a blue flash ran away from the now-destroyed Badnik.
“Good job guys!” Sonic exclaimed, a smile spreading across his face easily.
However, as the group exchanged their familiar words of encouragement, each one of them gave Amy a concerned glance, clearly sensing something was wrong.
She didn’t feel too bad, just a little dizzy. The impact that had pushed her back against the tree had probably left her with a mild concussion but nothing she hadn’t dealt with before.
But overall, the group seemed happy, turning to leave the battle sight and contact GUN, who would probably want the scraps from the Badnik’s to stop Eggman getting his hands on them again.
However, just before they could turn around, Sonic’s smile vanished. Amy watched him, watched how his shoulders tensed and his eyes darkened.
She watched as his hands curled into tight fists and a familiar tired look crossed his face that had nothing to do with the fatigue from the battle.
He seemed to be looking anywhere but Amy, his eyes flickering to a spot just behind the group every so often.
Amy had to repress a sigh. They were being watched.
Not just watched, filmed.
It was nothing new obviously, but she knew how much it bothered Sonic. He was always worried that the people who filmed them were putting themselves in danger of getting injured from the battle that was happening and hated when they would just seemingly appear out of nowhere.
Personally, Amy didn’t care if they got a little injured. It was cruel, she knew that, but maybe it would stop them from following them all around.
Amy could feel Tails presence beside her, leaning into her slightly as the sound of chatter approached the group from behind. Automatically, she placed her hand on the young fox’s back, guiding him away from the film crew and potential interviewers.
Amy meets Knuckles eye as she carefully guided Tails towards him and Knuckles nodded in understanding. Amy had taken it upon herself to make sure to keep Tails away from the spotlight as much as possible, since he was the youngest of the group, not even being an adult yet.
Knuckles gave Sonic a quick nod as well before moving away from the large group of people approaching them, with Tails in tow.
Amy knew it was always a bad idea to be left alone with Sonic and media, but her mind was still cloudy from her concussion. She was tired, completely drained after the fight and honestly just wanted to go home.
She started walking a few paces behind Tails and Knuckles, Sonic walking with her, in hopes that maybe just this once, they wouldn’t be stopped and questioned.
But her wish was futile.
Shouts and calls came from behind the group, questioning the battle that had just occurred, asking about when they believed Eggman would return again.
Amy kept walking, Sonic a few steps in front of her. She knew he could easily sprint away from the reporters and was very grateful he didn’t, not wanting to be left alone with them.
She could feel the burnt grass beneath her feet, the crunch of metal making her nausea worse as the sound of the ever-approaching horde of people behind her scared her more than any swarm of Badnik’s.
Since when had this part become the real battle?
But no matter how fast Amy walked, the media crew seemed to just move faster. A camera was shoved in her face, a mix of voices assaulting her ears as she maintained a perfect poker face, answering their questions with a simple yes or no.
This was fine, she thought. This was manageable enough. Soon they would get bored of her one-word answers and just leave her alone.
Her eyes were locked on Knuckles and Tails who were a fair few paces ahead of Amy and Sonic. The two got into Tails plane and flew off, leaving Amy and Sonic alone with the media.
The wave of sickness that hit Amy this time might not have been from her concussion.
“Amy Rose!” a reporter called out, “what do you have to say about the rumours that you and Sonic are dating?”
Those words seemed to be the catalyst for a chain reaction that was much worse than any Badnik explosion.
Soon other reporters joined in, asking about her and Sonic as if Amy would give them any different answer than she usually would.
To her horror and great comfort, she felt Sonic’s hand enclose around her arm. This only seemed to make the voices get louder but it grounded Amy, ensuring her that she wasn’t alone as her vision swam before her.
“You two are so cute!”
“Amy, how does it feel to be dating a hero?”
“Romance isn’t dead, folks!”
Amy met Sonic’s eyes as they kept walking. She could see how tired the other hedgehog looked, but despite that, he inclined his head slightly.
Amy responded with a nod and almost immediately felt the wind get knocked out of her as Sonic pulled her along as he ran, only opting to carry her once they were well out of the way of the reporters.
Sonic ran towards Amy’s house, stopping at her front door and gently placing Amy down, still holding onto her arm as he noticed how unsteady she had become.
Amy fumbled with the keys to her front door, hastily unlocking it and practically pushing Sonic inside.
Amy’s house resided in a small clearing, not too far from Sonic’s. It was simple, the inside neatly furnished and anything but grand. Amy preferred it that way, enjoying the fact her home felt like an escape from the fame that had been forced on her.
Sonic led Amy towards the couch, letting her collapse onto the soft fabric. She let out a strangled sigh as she rubbed her eyes, trying to stop her head from throbbing.
Sonic sat down next to Amy, also rubbing his face out of exhaustion as he kept his gaze on Amy, making sure she was alright.
“Glad we got away from that,” Sonic exclaimed, his voice revealing how tired he really was with the lack of energy that it usually carried.
A wave of tiredness seemed to wash over Amy as well that had nothing to do with the fight they had just had. Without even thinking, she sunk further into the couch, bringing her knees up to her chest, not even caring that her dirty shoes were now on her couch.
Amy hugged her knees, pressing her face into them to stop tears from forming. She couldn’t do this anymore, this running, this hiding. It was too much; it was too exhausting.
“Ames?”
She heard Sonic’s voice from beside her. His voice was dripping with concern, possibly from Amy’s sudden break down, or the fact that the hedgehog who had always prided herself on cleanliness now had her disgusting shoes on her freakishly clean couch.
He had sat up more now, and she could feel his gloved hand now placed on her shoulder.
She blinked back tears as she looked up at him, despising the obvious worry written across his face.
“I don’t know if I can keep doing this,” Amy whispered, her voice breaking slightly as she spoke.
She could barely make out Sonic’s expression through her haze of tears that she refused to let fall. Amy tried to focus on the comforting weight of Sonic’s hand on her shoulder as she took a shaky breath.
“I’m so sick of these rumours,” she continued, her voice barely audible.
At her words, Sonic pulled Amy into a hug. Amy easily fell into it, furiously blinking to stop herself from crying as she clung to Sonic like a lifeline.
“I’m sick of them too,” Sonic replied, his voice just as quiet as Amy’s.
Sonic held onto Amy as she tried to regain her composure, knowing if she started crying, she might never be able to stop. The sound of reporters echoed throughout her head, the rumours that infiltrated her life reverberating in her ears.
“What are we going to do?” she whispered to Sonic, knowing neither of them had an answer.
“I don’t know,” Sonic answered predictably, his voice defeated as he pulled away from Amy, “but we will figure it out.”
Both of Sonic’s hands were now placed on Amy’s shoulders, his emerald eyes staring into Amy’s. They stayed like that for a while, the cogs turning in Amy’s concussed head, trying to form a single productive thought through the sea of unwanted voices.
That was when an idea came to Amy.
Was it a good idea? Probably not. But at this point she was desperate and very dizzy. Anything that could maybe work would have to do.
Her head spun as she played her thought over in her head. Wow, she must have hit her head very hard to think this was in any way a good idea. But they didn’t need a good idea, they just needed one that worked.
“What if,” Amy started tentatively, trying to phrase her words in the best way possible, “we give them what they want.”
Sonic’s eyes shot up at this. Confusion spread across his face and he fixed Amy with a look that may have been questioning her sanity.
“Ames no offense but I’m not planning on dating you any time soon,” Sonic began, his voice surprised by the implications of Amy’s suggestion.
“Of course not!” Amy interrupted hurriedly, “I’m not saying it would need to be anything like that.”
Sonic still seemed just as confused as he searched Amy’s face for some kind of answer, and potentially wondering if Amy’s concussion was a little worse than just a mild one.
“Then what are we going to do?” he asked, curiosity filling his words.
Amy took another deep breath. This was a stupid idea. It was stupid and foolish and would probably only be acceptable as a last resort. But this was Amy’s last resort. They had tried everything else. This was the only option left.
“What if we got engaged?” Amy blurted out.
Sonic almost fell back in surprise. His eyes widened, seemingly trying to work out if Amy was joking or not.
“Not really, obviously, but what if we faked it,” Amy continued, her words doing nothing to comfort Sonic, “What if we came out and told everyone that we had been dating this whole time, tell them we got engaged and will be getting married?”
“I think you did hit your head way too hard in the battle, Amy,” Sonic answered, his face full of shock at Amy’s words.
Amy sighed before she started to explain her plan to Sonic. Maybe she had taken a bad hit in the fight, but she had also never been able to think clearer.
“It won’t be real, and our close friends will know that it’s fake,” Amy added, “but this may be the only way we can stop the rumours.”
Sonic still stared at Amy, trying to wrap his head around what Amy was saying.
“So, you want to stop the rumours, by confirming them?” Sonic asked, his voice full of scepticism.
Amy nodded in response, her brain working overtime to figure out the logistics of her plan that had been created purely out of desperation.
“It’s not ideal, I know,” Amy replied, running a gloved hand through her pink quills, “but we have tried everything else. We can fake the whole thing, fake the engagement, fake the marriage. Then when it’s all done, maybe the rumours will calm down.”
“Maybe?” Sonic exclaimed, “Amy, are you really planning to go through will all of this just for the chance that the rumours might stop?”
Amy sighed once again. Sonic was correct and he had every right to be sceptical. What if nothing changed, or it only made things worse.
“Look, Sonic,” Amy continued, “We have tried everything else. We have tried telling people we are just friends. We have tried telling them that we are dating other people. We have tried not even being in public together. If you have a better idea I would love to hear it, but I don’t think we have any other choice.”
Amy could hear the desperation in her voice. She hadn’t realised how close she was to breaking but she could feel it now. They had to do something. Amy didn’t have another choice.
Sonic seemed to recognise Amy’s plead, letting out a long sigh.
“You’re right,” Sonic agreed reluctantly, “we have tried everything.”
Another sigh escaped Sonic’s lips as he seemed to be thinking Amy’s idea over in his head for the hundredth time.
“I know it’s insane,” Amy continued, “And I know the only reason I am probably saying all of this is because I think I have a concussion. But we can think about it. We don’t have to announce it yet but once we work everything out, maybe this could the way forward.”
Amy could tell Sonic was wistfully thinking about the possibility of not having to deal with the rumours. Sure, it wouldn’t fix everything, but at least they wouldn’t be questioned when they went out together or hugged after battle. Who knows, maybe they would get bored of them both if they found out it was real and leave them alone completely.
People would still make comments about them being a cute couple and all that, but it would maybe stop people from trying to dig into their personal life, now that they had given the audience the narrative they so desperately wanted.
“And it’s completely fake?” Sonic asked.
Amy nodded again, “No strings attached.”
Sonic met her gaze, his own eyes filling with the same desperation Amy felt. He was so tired of it all as well. If Amy’s plan worked, well, it may be the best decision he would ever make in his life.
“You promise nothing will change between us?” Sonic questioned, his voice tainted with worry.
Amy couldn’t help but let out a weak chuckle, “Sonic, if nothing they have thrown at us has meant any change between us, then I can assure you that I don’t think anything will.”
Sonic gave a small smile in agreement.
“Ok,” he said, his voice cautious, “we can think about your plan.”
Amy should have felt elated, or at least relieved. But instead, she simply felt determined. This plan was going to work. It would have to work.
“Thank you, Sonic,” Amy said earnestly.
She pulled Sonic into another hug, her mind churning with the possibility of her plan. The idea that maybe, finally, they had a plan that could end the rumours brought her great comfort. Besides, being fake engaged to her best friend wouldn’t be that bad.
It wouldn’t change anything between them or anything between her and her friends. The ones Amy trusted enough would know it was fake so they would perceive her no differently.
A small voice in the back of Amy’s head reminded her of the night she had spent at Blaze’s house only yesterday. It’s ok, that wouldn’t change anything either.
Amy would tell Blaze everything, she would understand. Blaze already knew that there was nothing romantic in Amy and Sonic’s relationship and as soon as Amy was able to, she would go find her and tell her herself.
As she pulled away from Sonic, barely registering his words as he stood up and walked out of Amy’s living room, mentioning something about ice for her head. Her thoughts now spiraled through everything that would need to be done to make sure the plan went smoothly and was believable.
Despite herself, a small smile spread across Amy’s face. Maybe this was finally the answer. Maybe now, she would finally be free.
Notes:
Thank you for reading!!!
Poor Amy and her concussed head, she is really going through it. But I promise you she is not the only one. I think it's time we hear from Blaze and let's just all hope I don't weaponise that miscommunication tag that is definitely not the main theme of this entire fan fic.
Mwah!!
Chapter 3: I should be who you're engaged to

Chapter Text
Blaze stood in the kitchen of her house, rubbing sleep out of her eye.
The kettle squealed as the water finished boiling, the sound a stark contrast to the usual silence that filled the house.
Blaze hadn’t been living here long, but her and Silver’s decision to have a house in this dimension after the sudden influx of Eggman attacks had been a necessary one, unless they wanted to have to keep asking their friends to crash at their place.
It had been a big change, having a stable home in this dimension. Blaze mulled over these thoughts as she poured the hot water into a mug, watching as the tea bag floated to the top. Sure, it had been a change, but not one Blaze was necessarily unhappy about.
She supressed a yawn as she placed the kettle back down. Sha had gotten home late last night, after spending the day in the Sol dimension, making sure everything was ok after the attacks a couple of days ago.
All had been well, and while it would probably have been easier to just stay in her home dimension, but Blaze had found herself more drawn back to her new house in the dimension most of her friends resided in.
It was weird how she felt more at home in a place she had barely even lived in, but there was something so simple, so nice, about being here. Besides, any excuse to be closer to Amy.
At the thought of the pink hedgehog, Blaze felt a small smile spread across her face.
Amy had been the main person who had convinced Blaze to spend more time in this dimension, trying to convince her even before they start dating. Even since then, ever small touch, every kiss, had only seemed to connive Blaze of this decision a little more.
She could still remember the night they had first kissed.
It had been at Amy’s birthday party almost 2 years ago. The whole night had been filled with stolen glances and hidden smiles. Blaze couldn’t fully believe it when Amy pulled her into an empty corridor of her house and pulled her into a kiss.
At that point, Blaze didn’t even know that Amy liked girls. The hedgehog had later confessed that she hadn’t actually come out to anyone and wasn’t sure when she would be able to. It only got worse with the increased media attention and its broke Blaze’s heart to see Amy crawl back into her shell.
Sure, Blaze had her fair share of media criticism, but now they usually left her alone after she had told the media rather forcefully that she was a lesbian after being asked for the millionth time if her and Silver were dating.
Apparently, that confession had meant very little to the media, with them still speculating about her relationship with Silver, but ultimately, they left her be a lot more.
Her and Amy had talked a lot about their relationship, but both had decided to keep it a secret, even to their closest friends. Blaze had done so mainly for Amy’s benefit, recognising that she was not ready to come out yet.
That had never bothered Blaze though. She kind of loved the idea of their secret relationship. Sure, there were times she wished she could hold Amy’s hand while walking down a street, or kiss the other woman in a crowded room, but the clandestine rendezvous sent shivers down Blaze’s spine in a way nothing else could.
She wouldn’t change that for the world.
Bringing her cup of tea to her lips, she took a cautious sip, making sure she didn’t burn her mouth on the hot liquid.
However, her caution was almost made redundant as the loud bang of the front door almost made Blaze drop her mug all together.
“Good morning to you too, Silver!” Blaze called out, rolling her eyes as she set down her mug before the hedgehog barged into the kitchen.
“Morning Blaze,” replied the hedgehog who now stood before her.
Blaze had only seen Silver briefly last night, but she didn’t remember the hedgehog looking so dishevelled. His quills were poking out at odd angles, as if he had been running his fingers through them. His eyes were slightly wild and confused as he began to pace back and forth in the kitchen.
Silver looked like a right mess.
“Are you alight?” Blaze asked, her voice filling with concern.
“Yeah,” Silver replied in the least ok voice ever, “Just confused about why I didn’t know before. I mean I’m friends with Sonic and Amy. I don’t know why they didn’t tell me!”
Now it was Blaze’s turn to look confused. What on earth was Silver talking about it?
“Did you know? And if you did why didn’t you tell me?” Silver asked, his words becoming harder to understand as he began to ramble
“Woah, ok, slow down,” Blaze began, moving forward to place a hand on Silver’s shoulder, “What are you talking about?”
“This!” Silver cried, shoving a newspaper under Blaze’s nose.
Blaze hadn’t even registered the paper that Silver had clutched in his hand until now. She gently pried the newspaper out of the hedgehog’s grasp, flattening it out to get rid of the wrinkles.
It was then her heart stopped.
BREAKING NEWS!
Sonic T. Hedgehog and Amy Rose relationship rumours have been confirmed by an anonymous source.
Blaze stopped reading, worried she was going to be sick. She looked at Silver, who gave her a nod to keep reading.
An anonymous source confirmed in the early hours of the morning that rumoured couple, Sonic T. Hedgehog and Amy Rose are recently engaged.
No, no, no, what was going on?
What was originally believed to be just rumours has now been confirmed by Sonic himself, who told a reporter in this morning that the rumours were true.
The hedgehog stated that “Yes, Amy and I have been dating for years now but we wanted to keep it quiet. But now that we are engaged, well there isn’t much more to hide.”
No. This wasn’t real. Why had Sonic said that? That wasn’t true. Was it?
“See!” Silver spoke from behind Blaze, “I mean good for them, but I don’t know why they kept it from us?”
Blaze couldn’t think. She couldn’t even begin to process what she had just read. It wasn’t true it couldn’t be. But if it wasn’t true, then why did Sonic confirm it?
“Blaze?”
Silver’s voice was now filled with concern as Blaze held the paper in her trembling hands.
“It can’t be true,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Silver now placed his own hand on Blaze’s shoulder.
“Look, I know it’s a big shock, but we should still be happy for them. They are our friends.”
“NO!”
Blaze’s scream tore through the house. She threw the paper onto the floor and pulled Silver’s hand off her shoulder.
“SHE DOESN’T LOVE HIM. SHE CAN’T!”
Blaze stormed out of the kitchen, running up the stairs and collapsing onto her bed. She buried her face in her pillow that now turned wet from the tears that fell from her eyes.
It wasn’t true. It wasn’t true. Why hadn’t Amy told her? Why had she just let Blaze be pulled along by the promise of her lips? Why had she lied?
All those late night kisses, all those deep conversations. All those times Amy had cried in her arms because she couldn’t take the rumours of her and Sonic dating.
Had all of it been nothing but a lie?
“Blaze,” a tentative voice called from her doorway.
Blaze didn’t respond, she just listened to the sound of Silver’s shoes against the floorboards.
“Blaze, what’s wrong?” Silver asked, his voice soft as he kneeled down next to where Blaze lay.
Everything. Everything was wrong. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Had everything really been a lie?
“She’s not supposed to love him!” Blaze cried into her pillow.
She felt the mattress dip slightly as Silver sat down next to her, his hand resting on the back of her shoulder.
Amy had always told Blaze that there was nothing going on between her and Sonic. She had always said how much she hated the media attention surrounding the two.
Had she just been using Blaze, making her feel sorry for her just to turn around and break her heart?
Nothing made sense. Nothing was right!
“I know it’s a lot to take in,” Silver said, his voice gentle, “You can take your time.”
Blaze didn’t know what to believe. How much had been real about their relationship? How much had been a lie?
It had felt so real, so perfect. What had happened?
Had Blaze done something wrong? Who was at fault?
“She isn’t supposed to marry him,” Blaze replied, her words muffled by her tear-stained pillow.
Blaze could practically hear the cogs turning in Silver’s head, even over her own screaming mind.
“Who is she supposed to marry then?” Silver asked cautiously, well aware that Blaze could break down again at any moment.
Who was Amy supposed to marry? Blaze’s response was selfish, it was cruel. She didn’t have a right to Amy Rose. Amy was her own person. She could do as she pleased.
But why was this her decision, after everything they had been through?
Why had she chosen him?
“Me,” Blaze whispered, her voice catching on her choked sobs, “She’s supposed to marry me.”
Silver’s hand still from where it had been rubbing gentle circles into Blaze’s shoulder.
“You?” he replied, trying to make sure he had heard Blaze correctly.
“Yes.”
Blaze felt sick. There was a pit in her stomach that made a nauseous feeling creep through her body. Her heart hurt. It hurt more than it had ever hurt before.
She was going to be sick. No, more than that. She was going to die.
This had to be what it felt like, dying.
Amy never even said anything, never even broke up. She just went off and got engaged. It had only been three days since Blaze had last seen Amy. Was it really possible so much had changed in just three days?
“I didn’t know you had feelings for her,” Silver responded after a devastating stretch of silence.
Blaze groaned in response. She didn’t just have feelings for Amy. She loved her. And she had once thought Amy loved her too. But apparently, she had been wrong.
Begrudgingly, Blaze pushed herself up from her pillow, her arms supporting most of her weight as she turned to face Silver.
“It’s more than that, Silver,” Blaze chocked out, “It was so much more than just feelings.”
Blaze collapsed back down onto her bed, lying on her side and bringing her knees up to her chest as sobs wracked her body.
“I loved her,” Blaze sobbed, “I thought she loved me.”
Through the haze of tears, Blaze could see Silver’s concerned stare on her. However, the concern in his eyes was now coupled with a sadness that Blaze didn’t see there very often.
She felt gloved fingers begin to run through her hair that she was yet to tie up. The contact only made her cry more.
Silver let her cry, simply choosing to stay quiet as he watched his friend break down before his very eyes like had never seen before.
Once Blaze’s cries became softer and she stopped shaking so much, Silver finally spoke.
“You don’t have to explain anything, Blaze,” he began, his fingers still running through her hair, “But I’m here for you if you need to talk.”
Blaze sniffled in response, pushing herself up from the bed once more. She brushed away her tears before her eyes met Silver’s.
He still sat on the edge of the bed, his hand that had been in Blaze’s hair now resting beside him. She had never told Silver about her and Blaze out of respect for Amy’s privacy. But now, Blaze couldn’t even begin to care about Amy’s privacy.
Not after what she had done.
“Me and Amy were dating,” Blaze started, watching as her words hit Silver like a ton of bricks, “for over a year and a half.”
Shock was written across Silver’s face, his mouth slightly open. He didn’t interrupt, so Blaze kept talking.
“She had always said that there was nothing romantic between her and Sonic. She had always said how she hated the rumours,” Blaze continued, her voice breaking as she spoke, “She-she didn’t even break up with me. I only saw her 3 days ago and nothing had changed.”
A sob escaped Blaze before she spoke again. How had this all happened.
“I don’t know what happened. I don’t know what I did wrong,” Blaze wept, tears forming in her eyes again, “Everything was perfect, and now it’s just…”
Blaze trailed off, dissolving into tears once more. However, this time before she could collapse back onto the bed, she felt a pair of arms wrap around her, pulling her closer as she cried.
Silver pulled her into a hug, letting Blaze’s head rest on his shoulder as tears fell freely once more. His arms gave Blaze an anchor, which she latched onto, trying to find anything to keep her stable. Tears stung in her eyes as she buried her head further into Silver’s shoulder, clinging to him like a lifeline.
“I’m sorry Blaze,” Silver whispered, “I’m so so sorry.”
They stayed like that for what could have been hours. At some point, Blaze had run out of tears to cry, leading to her letting out the occasional chocked sob.
Everything hurt. It hurt to cry as much as it hurt to not. It hurt to hold onto Silver despite the fact the last thing Blaze wanted to do was let go. Everything hurt because the only person she wanted right now was Amy, and the only person she couldn’t have was Amy.
Amy had caused this whole mess. She had caused all of Blaze’s tears and all other pain. So why did Blaze still want her to burst into the room, pull her into her arms and whisper sweet nothings into her ear.
She wanted it so much, but now she could no longer have it. Never again.
“Blaze?” Silver whispered, pulling Blaze out of her spiral.
Blaze gave a quiet hum in response, pulling away from Silver slightly to meet his gaze. It was then that she noticed the glassiness of the hedgehog’s eyes. He had been crying as well.
“I had no idea about you and Amy,” Silver continued, his voice full of apology.
“We didn’t tell anyone,” Blaze muttered, letting her gaze fall from Silver, “Amy didn’t want any more media attention. Besides, she wasn’t ready to come out yet.”
Blaze expected tears to follow this statement, but none did. Instead, she simply felt numb. It was honestly more painfully than crying had been.
“Oh, Blaze,” Silver sighed, taking one of her hands in his, “I’m so sorry.”
“I don’t understand,” Blaze said, her voice hollow and lacking any sort of emotion.
She hated the fact Amy was getting married to Sonic. She hated it with all her heart. But most of all, Blaze didn’t understand why Amy hadn’t told her. Why had Amy been so content with dragging Blaze along with her for over a year and half just to turn around and get married to another person?
“She hasn’t tried to contact you about it?” Silver asked, giving a quick glance at Blaze’s phone, which lay on her bed side table.
He handed Blaze her phone without another word, watching as Blaze tapped the screen to turn it on.
Nothing.
No notifications from Amy, or anyone else for that matter.
The pit in her stomach seemed to only get bigger.
This couldn’t really be happening. Surely this was all just some sort of twisted nightmare. Blaze would wake up in the morning and breathe a sigh of relief that none of this had been real.
But nightmares weren’t supposed to hurt this much. In nightmares, you weren’t supposed to feel physical pain of your heart being ripped out of your chest and being squashed into the wooden floorboards.
Nightmares were supposed to stay inside the mind, never breaching containment like this. This couldn’t be a nightmare because everything was far too real. Everything hurt, everything stung.
Nothing was real except everything and as the phone in Blaze’s grip tumbled unceremoniously to the floor, everything seemed to sink in.
She had lost Amy.
Amy was gone.
Not dead, but almost worse.
She was no longer Blaze’s.
“Why?” Blaze whispered, her voice cracking once more.
She couldn’t get the feeling off her, the feeling of Amy’s hands running through her hair.
She couldn’t forget the way Amy had moved her lips against Blaze’s so many times.
She couldn’t let go of the feeling of Amy’s face buried in the crook of Blaze’s neck.
Blaze couldn’t forget. She didn’t know if she ever would.
Everything hurt so much, it was all too much.
Why?
Silver pulled Blaze into another hug, his own eyes filled with worry as his friend broke in his grasp once more.
Blaze shook as tears streamed down her cheeks. Why had this all happened? Why would Amy do this?
Nothing made sense and that only made it hurt more.
“It’s going to be ok, Blaze,” Silver comforted, his voice gentle as if worried that it would only break his already fragile friend, “we will get through this.”
Blaze knew he was right. She was strong, she was resilient.
But did she really want to get through this?
Did she want to get through this, or did she just want to go back to a couple days earlier when Amy had showed up at her house announced and kissed her senseless?
Did Blaze want to get better when she knew that nothing could have been better than what she had already lost?
Because she had lost Amy.
And Amy wasn’t coming back.
