Chapter 1: First meeting

Chapter Text

John Laurens did not want to be here.

If you asked him where he was going to be in two years, two years ago, he would’ve said dead in his grave. Preferably after falling heroically in battle. Unfortunately, he was sipping champagne in a ballroom, bored out of his fucking skull.

See, John Laurens was the son of Henry Laurens, one of the many advisors to the king. So he had to be here. Well. Not had to. If he wasn’t here his father would take him out the will, just because he wasn’t networking enough.

John’s fingers run over the divots in his mothers ring. He wears it on a string tied around his neck. His father offered to get him a chain for it several times, but he always refused. It was more practical, and cost less to replace. Next to the ring are his dog tags from when he was in the military. John Laurens. Christian. 26. He doesn’t know why he still wears it. When people ask he just makes a joke about people knowing who he is if he randomly dies.

John makes his way through the crowd of people dancing, and heads out onto the balcony. When he gets out there, he notices what he thinks is a man leaning on the railing.

The man is short, about 5’6 or 5’7, with long, curly red hair tied up in a bun. He’s wearing an off the shoulder green ballgown, that shines a bit in the moonlight. He has a silver crown adorning his head, with a matching necklace. He was shivering slightly in the cold of the night.

John takes off his jacket, and walks up to him.

“Are you cold?”

The boy jumps in surprise, and looks up at John. He has the most breathtaking eyes, blue, but they seem purple. He has freckles all over his face, and John noticed all over his arms too. He looks ever so slightly familiar. Maybe he’s seen him before from a previous one of these events.

“Yes, but it’s alright.”

“Here.”

John offers him his jacket.

“Are you sure? I don’t want you getting cold.”

“I’m wearing long sleeves, I’ll be fine.”

He takes the jacket and wraps it around his shoulders. “If you’re sure…”

“I’m John Laurens. And you are…?”

He looks almost dumbfounded that you had to ask.

“Um. The prince?”

It suddenly dawns on John who this is. The reason he was so familiar was because of the countless times he’s seen him on gossip magazines, tv news articles, and just the newspaper. Alexander Hamilton. Adopted son of George Washington, the king.

“My apologies! I didn’t recognize you! I’m- I’m so sorry-“

“Don’t worry about it. It’s refreshing.”

Alex leans over on the balcony closer to John.

“So. What do you do?”

“I was in the military. Lieutenant Colonel. Not anymore, I got shot in the arm too many times. Honorable discharge. I’m currently in the process of doing paramedic training.”

“Oh wow. Lieutenant Colonel Laurens. I like that. Flows off the tongue. And a paramedic? You’re building up quite the resume.”

John blushes a bit, and leans closer to Alex.

“Well, you’re impressive too. You’re a prince.”

“And I went to law school.” Alex brags, hand under his chin.

“Don’t brag. It’s not a good look.” John teases.

Alex rolls his eyes, and places a hand on John’s shoulder. “Please. If I could get away with it I’d be bragging a lot more.”

John stands all the way up, and stretches. “God, I hate these things.”

“Wanna go to the garden with me?”

“Are we allowed to?”

“Technicallyyyyyy you’re not. Me however? I am. And I’m saying you can come.”

“Well, who am I to pass up an invitation from the Prince?” John holds out his elbow for Alex, who wraps his hands around it. “Lead the way.”

—————-
A few minutes later, they were in an extravagant garden, with many various plants. Alex leads John to a bench underneath a willow tree.

“It’s beautiful out here.”

“Thanks. I love coming here after meetings. Barely anyone comes to this one.”

“This one? How many gardens do you have?!”

Alex chuckles. “A few. This is the least popular one, but it’s my favorite.”

“It’s beautiful.”

Alex hums, and leans on John’s shoulder. “You’ve already said that.”

“It’s true though!”

Alex laughs, and then John’s phone rings in his pocket. John reaches into it and sees the caller id. Martha.

Chapter 2: The call

Summary:

John gets a call.

A/N: sorry for the short chapter I am incapable of writing anything long I guess

Chapter Text

“Do you mind if I take this real quick?”

Alex shakes his head. “Go ahead.”

John gets up off the bench and walks over to a different tree, before answering it.

“Hello.”

“Jackie! You’re at the ball, right?” Martha Manning’s voice comes out of the phone.

“Martha, we broke up. I’ve told you several times to stop calling my number.”

“Jackie, we know you weren’t being serious about that. Your dad would kill you. Besides, I’m wearing the most gorgeous dress tonight…”

John grimaces. “Martha. Stop calling me.”

“Fine. Wait until your dad hears you were being serious.”

Martha hangs up on him, and John lets out a sigh.

“Are you alright?”

Alex says from behind him. John jumps in surprise.

“Jesus! How are you so quiet in those heels?”

“Years of practice. Seriously. Are you alright?”

John sighs again. “Yes. I’m fine.”

“Do you want to go back inside? The balls almost over.”

“I’d love to go anywhere with you.”

Alex giggles. “So sweet. C’mon.”

Alex leads John back inside the ballroom, where everything seems to be quieting down.

“Well, it was a pleasure to meet you, Prince.”

“It was a pleasure to meet you too, Lieutenant Colonel.”

John laughs. “Don’t use my rank. Don’t be so formal.”

“Hypocrite, calling me Prince like that’s not just as formal.”

John takes Alex’s hand and presses a kiss to the back of it.

“I hope to see you soon.”

“Me too.”

Chapter 3: Average sibling experience

“Lafayette you don’t get it!”

“Little lion, what you’re telling me is you fell in love with a random man at a ball.”

Alex flops onto his bed and groans. “A hot random man!”

“Mon Ami, how you say…”

“Stop with the ‘how you say’ stuff! You speak better English than most native speakers!”

Lafayette laughs. “Fine, fine. But that sounds like a bad idea.”

“He was in the army, Laf. He’s training to be a paramedic.”

“I changed my mind. Go for him.”

Alex rolls his eyes and throws a pillow at Lafayette. “Seriously? You just needed to know that?!”

“You can trust paramedics! …probably. Why was he at the ball?”

“He said his dad makes him come to them. Or something.”

“What was his last name? I may know him.”

“Fuck, uh, Laurens? Yeah, Laurens.”

Lafayette gasps. “That’s one of dad’s advisors!”

“Oh, deadass?”

“Yes, he’s the one he doesn’t like!”

“Fuck wait, the uh, brunette old guy? With all those kids?”

Lafayette nods. “I’m gonna find out what the guy you were talking to’s social media is.”

“Do not!”

“John Laurens… 27… ooh, shirtless pic-“

“LAFAYETTE!!!”

“Whatttt, he went to the beach!”

Alex hits Lafayette with another one of his pillows. The door to his room opens up.

“Everything alright in here boys?”

George Washington stands in the doorway, in his typical black suit, with a gold crown.

“Your son is hitting me!”

“Shut up Lafayette!!!”

George sighs.

“Please keep it down. You two scared one of the maids. She thought someone was breaking in.”

“Sorry pa.”

“No worries. I have a meeting, so if you need anything, find your mother. She’s in the garden in the left wing.”

“Whos the meeting with?”

George groans. “Henry Laurens. I hate that guy.”

“So… fire him?”

“I can’t. I have to wait another three years to fire him. I kept renewing him just because I didn’t want to deal with it.”

“Jesus Christ, pa.”

“I know, I know. Stay out of trouble.”

George leaves and closes the door behind him.

“Dads gonna be so pissed if you date Henry’s son.”

“I knowwwwww. It’s fine. It’s fine.”

If anything’s wrong with this chapter it’s because I know nothing about the monarchy nor am I planning to learn
