Natsuki’s sobs had quieted down to soft hiccups. Her hands, once balled into fists, now clung to Sayori’s blazer as though letting go would make the tears come back.
Sayori didn’t say anything. She just kept running her fingers through Natsuki’s hair, humming softly. It was a song she’d made up in her head—a tune that wasn’t really about anything, just warmth and comfort.
“I didn’t mean to yell…” Natsuki whispered, voice hoarse. “I just… I hate it when people act like I’m not trying.”
Sayori’s hand paused for a moment, then resumed its rhythm. “Shhh~” she whispered soothingly. “You don’t have to explain.”
Natsuki sniffled, her grip tightening. “Dad said I was being dramatic, again. Just because I asked if I could stay late at the club.”
Sayori’s heart ached. She knew Natsuki's life was bad at home, but she didn’t press. She just let the silence stretch, wrapping it around them like a second blanket.
After a while, Natsuki lifted her head, her eyes still red. “...Sorry.. I got your blazer all wet...” She looked away bashfully, cheeks flushing in embarrassment.
Sayori giggled gently, brushing a thumb across Natsuki’s cheek. “That’s okay. It’s just proof you trust me.”
Natsuki blinked, then gave a small, shaky sniffle before wrapping her arms around Sayori again—tighter this time. Sayori let out a soft “eep!” of surprise as Natsuki pressed into her chest, pushing her back a bit. Her pink hair brushed against Sayori’s face.
Sayori blushed, feeling her heart race at the closeness—and at how small Natsuki felt in her arms.
“Ehehe… you’re so small, Natsuki...” Sayori teased, her voice light, but affectionate.
Natsuki groaned quietly, her voice muffled against Sayori’s chest. “Don’t start, Sayori…”
Sayori couldn’t help but smile wider, her blush deepening as she realized she could probably rest her head on top of Natsuki’s if she really wanted to. “S-sorry… it’s just— really cute when you hug me like this.”
Natsuki huffed quietly, but her arms didn’t loosen. “Yeah, well… don’t get used to it.”
Sayori laughed softly and hugged her tighter anyway.
“I already did.”
