Making a Life

Summary:

When Kiela visits Larran, he has something special in store for her

Notes:

For Flufftober Day 16: Pillows, Plushies, Piles of Blankets

Work Text:

Winter had set over Caltrey. The air was crisp and cold. Caz and Meep spent all their time in the warmth of the cottage, protected from the harsh wind. That morning, Kiela decided to pay a visit to her husband. Husband. She still wasn't used to the word applying to them. She remembered how nice their wedding had been with all of the islanders there to pay their respects and share their joy.

When she got to the beach house, Larran wasn't out with his merhorses, now more numerous. She therefore went straight to the house and knocked. He answered with his usual smile.

"Kiela, I was hoping you'd come."

"You know me well."

"I prepared something for us."

He moved out of the way to let her in. She saw a pile of pillows and blankets on the floor. And smelled a delicious meal cooking.

"I thought we could cuddle on the floor by the fire, eat and just enjoy each other's company."

"Sounds wonderful."

"I prepared us dinner and I got some pastries from Bryn. We can eat them with some jam made by my amazing wife."

Kiela smiled. Larran's admiration for her never faltered even as time went by. And her love for him and how kind-hearted he was only grew. She watched as he cooked them lunch then they wrapped themselves in blankets and cuddled by the fire to eat it.

"I thought about building a fort like a child but wasn't sure you'd like it."

"Of course I would. I like anything you do."

"When we have kids.... I mean if we have kids, I don't know, I don't want to force anything on you, I just..." Larran fumbled.

Kiela hadn't thought about that yet. Did she want kids? It felt like a normal progression of a relationship, but was it what she wanted? As she thought about it, she found herself overwhelmed by practical thoughts. There was no space for kids at her cottage because of the shop, so they would have to live at Larran's. And how weird would it be for her not to live with them. She would have to move to Larran's too. She wasn't quite ready for that. But, in the end, when she imagined herself surrounded by running children, her heart melted. Yes, it would be nice.

"There's a lot to think about and I'm not ready yet, but yes, children would be nice."

Larran smiled. She knew he would've been okay with any decision she made and it made it all the easier to choose for herself. But for now they could enjoy living their own lives, separate from each other, yet connected. One day would come for her to move in here and start a family, leaving Caz and Meep to mind the shop for her most days. Though she looked forward to making the jam with her child as a little helper. She looked forward to teaching them that knowledge was important, that books were valuable resources and that kindness and love were what made them a community.
