Work Text:
Sakura wasn’t listening to the history lecture. The monotone drone of their teacher was just background noise, a distant hum compared to the frantic drumbeat of anxiety in his chest. A year. It had been a full year since he and Endo officially started dating. And while Sakura liked Endo—truly, madly, deeply—there was a part of him that always braced for impact whenever Endo planned a “surprise.”
This latest “anniversary trip”? A mystery wrapped in riddles, tied with a bow of pure Endo-ness. The older boy had announced it with his usual flourish:
"I’m planning our anniversary getaway, Sakura! Every detail is a secret, a thrilling adventure orchestrated solely by me. You just need to pack a bag and show up!"
Sakura had tried to feign excitement, but a shiver ran down his spine. Endo’s passions weren’t hiking or sightseeing—they were the messier, grittier pleasures of life: hunting down the grungiest bars, watching (or sometimes joining) chaotic street fights, deep-fried junk food binges, and a fondness for both alcohol and recreational substances of questionable legality. This “getaway” could range from a romantic weekend in a beautiful city to a three-day, non-stop bender ending on a random beach in another prefecture.
Sakura couldn’t take it anymore. While the teacher droned on about Edo-period economics, his thumb flew across his phone screen.
Sakura: Endo, about this trip…
The reply was almost instant, accompanied by a heart-eyes sticker that practically screamed, “I am mocking you joyfully.”
Endo: Eager for our grand adventure, I see! Don’t fret—anticipation is just another way of saying I love you so much I can’t wait to see what mischief you’ve cooked up for me!
Sakura scowled at the phone. “Mischief” usually meant one of them ending up in trouble.
Sakura: Can you just… give me one hint? Like, what kind of clothes should I pack? Do I need to bring my knuckles?
Another reply, this time a GIF of a winking anime character blowing a kiss.
Endo: Clothes? I’d suggest garments suitable for… dancing until dawn! And maybe something waterproof. Or fireproof. Or both! Depending on the… local ambiance and how much we intend to enhance our experience.
Sakura felt a vein twitch in his temple. Dancing until dawn? “Enhance our experience”? Great. So, a squat party in a burned-out warehouse. Got it.
Sakura: Seriously. Hot? Cold? Durable boots? Swimsuit? Disguise?!
This time, the reply took longer, building suspense. When it came, it was a voice memo. Sakura discreetly put the phone to his ear, ignoring the curious glance of a nearby classmate.
"My dearest Sakura," Endo’s voice purred, low and theatrical, "imagine a place where the air hums with freedom! Where the ground beneath your feet might be packed dirt in a forgotten alley… or plush velvet in a VIP room only we know about! We will celebrate the fact that you, the most beautiful and fiercely loyal person I know, have actually stuck with a degenerate like me for an entire year!"
He paused, then continued in mock-seriousness:
"As for attire, comfort is key, of course. But also… readiness for the unexpected! Think ‘well-worn hoodie meets hidden flask at a street festival where the local specialty is questionable moonshine and a brawl might break out over the last cigarette!’"
Sakura pulled the phone away, bewildered, but a faint smile tugged at his lips. Degenerate? Not wrong. Loyal? Okay, idiot. But… seriously, just tell me where we’re going.
He buried his face in his hands. This was going to be an interesting anniversary.
The day finally arrived.
Sakura had spent the last twenty-four hours oscillating between dread and a reluctant flicker of excitement. In the end, he'd settled on a small backpack containing only the absolute necessities for surviving a weekend with Endo. His wardrobe was strictly practical: athletic wear, the kind of durable, comfortable clothes he usually favored—perfect for either a gym or a spontaneous brawl.
He had also, slightly shyly, tucked in the essentials for an overnight stay, including a fresh change of pajamas. He knew Endo would have done the same, or at least he hoped. A year into their relationship, the mere thought of sharing intimate moments still managed to make a deep blush rise in Sakura’s cheeks. He felt ridiculous being embarrassed about sharing a bed, a moment, or anything else with his boyfriend, but he suspected that tiny point of stubborn shyness was a part of his personality that was never going to leave him. He still had to pretend he wasn't looking forward to it.
He was staring out the window, pretending to be utterly preoccupied with the weather, when a low, rumbling growl vibrated up from the street.
Endo had warned him. "We're taking the bike. It's the only way to truly feel the wind and the freedom of the open road!"
Sakura wasn't used to this kind of grand, romantic gesture—or maybe just any gesture that involved a large, loud machine. He made his way down the stairs of his apartment building, the small backpack slung over his shoulder, already preparing his look of cool indifference.
And then he saw him.
Endo was parked right at the curb on a sleek, black bike that looked powerful enough to cross a continent. He was leaning back slightly, one leg braced on the ground, wearing a faded leather jacket that was just cool enough to make Sakura annoyed that it suited him so well. He pulled off his helmet, a wave of dark hair spilling free, and flashed Sakura one of his very best, most genuine smiles—the kind that crinkled the corners of his eyes and made him look impossibly bright and charming.
It was unfair. It was completely and utterly unfair how good Endo looked.
Sakura stopped a few feet away, forced his expression into a practiced scowl, and let out a dramatic sigh.
"Seriously?" Sakura demanded, his voice flat. "A motorcycle? You said we were going on a trip, not trying out for a cheesy biker movie."
Endo just laughed, a warm, resonant sound that made the forced irritation melt just a little around the edges.
"Now, now, my fierce Sakura," Endo teased, tilting his head. "Don't pretend you're not impressed. It's the most authentic way to travel. Besides," he pushed his hand toward the bike's sparse luggage rack, "it ensures you can't overpack. Everything you need is already right here."
Sakura walked forward and gave his bag a skeptical shake. "I packed for 'fireproof or waterproof.' Which one are we aiming for first, genius?"
The raven haired boy reached out, gently took the small backpack from Sakura's shoulder, and with an open, loving gesture, brushed his knuckles against Sakura’s cheek.
"We're aiming for us, Cherry Boy," Endo said softly, his voice dropping the theatrical tone for a moment. "And that's always the most exciting destination. Now, jump on. We have a beautiful, chaotic schedule to keep." He winked, grabbed an extra helmet from the handlebar, and held it out. "Ready to abandon your dignity for a weekend of pure freedom, Sakura?"
Sakura gave Endo a skeptical look, but his hands were already reaching for the helmet. As he settled the gear over his two toned hair, the brim of the helmet thankfully hid the involuntary, tiny smile that stretched across his lips. The sheer sight of Endo, all confident charm and leather jacket, was ridiculously appealing.
"Fine," Sakura muttered, though the sound was swallowed by the helmet's padding.
Endo grinned, a flash of pure satisfaction. "Good." He straddled the bike properly and gave a slight nod toward his waist. "Hold on tight, Cherry Boy. I don't want to lose my favorite passenger before we even hit the highway."
Sakura didn't need to be told twice. He swung a leg over the seat, his body settling close against Endo's back. He wrapped his arms around Endo’s waist, feeling the solid warmth of the older boy's body and the rough texture of his jacket.
Endo shifted, leaning back slightly to press into Sakura. "Careful there, Sakura. You're gripping me like we're already checking into our room. We have to earn the celebratory chaos first."
Sakura’s face burned hot beneath the helmet. He instinctively tightened his grip, but not in affection. "Shut up, or I'll punch you so hard you'll forget where you planned to take us," he hissed.
"Promises, promises," Endo chuckled, before kicking the stand up and revving the engine with a roar that made the apartment building windows rattle. "Hold on! Adventure awaits!"
The bike surged forward, throwing Sakura back against Endo. The wind immediately rushed around them, a sharp, exhilarating change from the stuffy town air.
The first part of the ride was a blur of familiar streets and tall buildings. Sakura kept his head low, tucking it just under Endo's shoulder and enjoying the feeling of being pressed close to him—a moment of intimacy hidden from the world by the speed and the helmets.
After a while, the anxious part of his brain took over again. He leaned forward slightly, trying to shout over the engine noise.
"Hey! Are we going far? How many hours is this supposed to take?!"
Endo tilted his head back, just enough to catch the sound. He shouted his reply into the wind, his voice barely audible but brimming with his usual melodrama. "Just know we're going far enough that they won't hear your worried little screams!"
Sakura gritted his teeth. Asshole. He tried a different tactic.
"Is it a coastal town? Do I need that swimsuit you mentioned?!"
Endo laughed, a joyful, full-bodied sound that made Sakura feel it through his ribs. "The coast? Perhaps! Or perhaps a place that merely smells like the sea after a particularly good rain! All I can say is, prepare for things to get wonderfully wet, Cherry Boy!"
Sakura slumped against him, defeated. Wet. Could be the ocean, could be a dive bar where the roof leaks, could be a cheap hotel with faulty plumbing. Thanks for nothing.
He gave up on questioning and settled into the ride. The rhythmic thrum of the engine beneath him and the constant rush of the air eventually started to soothe his nerves. He focused on the passing scenery.
Gradually, subtly, the concrete canyons began to give way to something different. The buildings grew shorter, then sparser. The sounds of traffic thinned out, replaced by the wind and the bike's own roar.
Sakura lifted his head. The sky seemed wider, clearer, and on either side of the highway, the landscape was beginning to green. He saw rolling hills in the distance and dense lines of trees where skyscrapers used to be. They were definitely leaving the city behind. They were heading into the wilderness, or at least, something closer to it.
A small surge of genuine, unadulterated curiosity mixed with his anxiety. Just what the hell have you planned, Endo?
The journey was finally nearing its end.
After another hour of smooth riding, the bike slowed, leaving the main highway for a winding, two-lane road flanked by thick forest. The air instantly felt crisper, cleaner, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth.
When the bike finally pulled into a small clearing and sputtered to a stop, Sakura knew they had arrived. He eagerly pulled the helmet from his head, running a hand through his flattened two toned hair.
He didn't speak. He couldn't.
Sprawled below them was a small, untouched town, cradled in a valley that looked like it had been perfectly preserved. But the town itself was secondary. What held Sakura utterly captive was the scenery. The mountains surrounding the settlement were ablaze with color. The early signs of the approaching autumn had painted the slopes in impossibly vivid shades of gold, rust, and fiery red that bled into deep crimson. Sunlight caught the changing leaves, making the whole valley glow. The contrast with the grey monotony of the city they had left was stunning.
Sakura just stared, his eyes wide, his lips slightly parted. All his anxiety, all his preparedness for a grimy, chaotic weekend, melted away in the face of this unexpected, raw beauty. He felt a rare, quiet sense of awe.
Endo killed the engine and then slowly removed his own helmet. He didn't speak a word. He simply watched Sakura. He saw the way the younger boy’s usually guarded features had completely softened, the way his tense shoulders finally relaxed, and the way his gaze was fixed, not on Endo or the bike or the luggage, but purely on the vibrant, ancient trees. The look on Sakura's face—that vulnerable, unguarded wonder—was everything.
A deep, quiet wave of pure happiness washed over Endo. There was no need for teasing or grand statements. This was the moment.
I got it right, he thought, his chest expanding with genuine affection. He just smiled, a gentle, small smile that only Sakura would ever see, knowing that the frantic planning, the riddles, and the long, cold ride had been completely worth it.
He finally broke the silence, his voice low and utterly sincere.
"Welcome," Endo said simply, his eyes still holding Sakura's gaze. "I figured we could use a little colour in our lives, Sakura." He paused, then his usual playful grin returned. "Now. Ready to check in? We have a beautiful, chaotic schedule to keep, and rumor has it the local moonshine is particularly transformative."
Sakura remained silent for another few moments, simply drinking in the view. The vibrant spectacle of the autumn leaves, the clear air, and Endo’s rare, gentle sincerity had completely disarmed him. He let the words—"I figured we could use a little colour in our lives"—settle over him before he finally nodded, a tight, small gesture of appreciation.
“Right. Let’s go then,” he mumbled, trying to recapture his usual gruffness.
Endo kicked the bike back to life, and they rode down the winding road and into the town itself. The ride was short, and when Endo parked the motorcycle neatly outside a structure, Sakura had to look twice to make sure it was their actual destination.
It was a beautiful, traditional ryokan.
The building was a picture of serene, aged elegance: dark timber beams, pristine white plaster walls, and a low, sweeping tiled roof. A manicured moss garden was visible through a large, polished window. It was the antithesis of everything Sakura had expected—no dodgy motel, no burnt-out squat, no back-alley dive.
"This is it?" Sakura asked, pulling off the helmet and turning a bewildered look on Endo. "You booked a... a fancy, traditional inn?"
Endo only gave him a wide, confident grin as he swung his bag off the bike. "Only the best for our anniversary. Did you think I'd make you sleep in a damp basement?"
"Yeah," Sakura retorted honestly. "I thought we'd be drinking something brewed in a bathtub!"
Endo just laughed and clapped him on the shoulder, already guiding him toward the entrance.
They were greeted in the entrance hall by an elderly couple. The man, with kind, wrinkled eyes, took their muddy boots, while the woman, dressed in a muted kimono, offered them soft indoor slippers. Her demeanor was calm and welcoming, a stark contrast to the rough edges both boys carried.
Sakura was instantly and painfully self-conscious. Every step he took felt clumsy and loud on the polished wooden floor. He kept his arms stiffly by his sides, terrified of brushing against a priceless scroll or knocking over a delicate vase. He felt like a crude intrusion, a living, breathing lump of city filth dropped onto a pedestal of refined elegance.
The old woman—the okami—smiled sweetly and led them down a hallway that smelled faintly of tatami and cypress wood. "This way, please. Your room is at the end of the hall. It has a lovely view of the inner garden."
Sakura shuffled awkwardly behind her, trying to mimic Endo's movements but failing miserably.
The taller boy, surprisingly, seemed completely at ease. He walked with his usual casual confidence, yet somehow managed to make his movements soft and respectful, his heavy boots replaced by the gentle thud of his slippers. He exchanged a pleasant nod with the okami, looking perfectly comfortable in this incredibly alien environment. It was profoundly irritating.
As they walked, Sakura leaned in and hissed at him. "How are you so calm? You look like you're about to steal the priceless tea ceremony set."
Endo just winked back, a wicked, knowing look in his eye. "Just observing the local customs, Sakura. Besides, there's always a secret back entrance. You're just worried you'll break a door trying to slide it open."
Sakura flushed, tightening his jaw. He knows!
They stopped outside a simple, wooden door. The okami slid it open with a whisper-soft sound and gestured inside. "Please, make yourselves comfortable."
Sakura stepped inside, his anxiety giving way to a new wave of surprise. The room was traditional and sparse, dominated by the fresh smell of the woven tatami mats. It was serene, calm, and waiting for them. And for the first time, he realized just how much effort Endo had put into this trip—not just the location, but this incredibly thoughtful, peaceful, and utterly un-Endo choice of accommodation.
Sakura stood frozen just inside the room, his eyes scanning the space. The shock was still settling. The quiet elegance, the scent of the tatami, the large window overlooking a small, raked garden—it was all so meticulously considered. He felt utterly lost, unsure where to put his hands or his ridiculously rough backpack.
Endo, however, strode in with his characteristic confidence, tossing his own small duffel bag onto the floor by the closet. He turned and saw Sakura standing there, a perfect image of flustered astonishment, and the smile on his face softened into something genuine and warm. He closed the sliding door, and the soft thud cut them off from the rest of the inn.
He walked over to Sakura, his movement slow and deliberate, and gently took the backpack from his shoulder, setting it down with care. He reached out and gently cupped Sakura's cheek, his thumb brushing over the skin just beneath his eye.
"Lost for words?" Endo murmured, his voice low and tender, utterly devoid of tease.
Sakura felt a familiar heat rise in his face, but he didn't pull away. He just looked at Endo, unable to form a coherent thought. "I... I just," he finally managed, shaking his head slightly. "This isn't... you."
Endo's expression turned serious, a rare, sincere look that made Sakura’s heart clench. He dropped his hand to grasp both of Sakura's, his large hands dwarfing the younger boy's.
"It took some doing, honestly," Endo admitted, looking around the peaceful room. "I've been working the last three months, trying to put away enough cash without you noticing." He looked directly into Sakura's eyes, an honest explanation replacing the riddles. "Days in the mechanic shop, nights running shifts at the processing factory. I wanted to give you something truly memorable, something you couldn't get back in the noise."
Sakura felt a swell of complicated emotion—guilt that Endo had worked himself so hard, and overwhelming affection for the thoughtfulness behind it.
"You idiot," Sakura whispered, pulling one hand away to lightly punch Endo's chest, though there was no force in the blow. "You didn't have to work nights for me."
Endo just shrugged, a fleeting return to his usual ease. "I wanted to. Besides, the real headache wasn't the money." He leaned in, lowering his voice conspiratorially. "This was one of the only traditional ryokans in the region with an onsen that actually agreed to overlook these…." He tapped a tattooed forearm with a proud smirk. "Turns out, most of these places aren't fans of rough-looking guys covered in body art."
The word onsen—the traditional Japanese hot spring bath—hit Sakura like a physical shock.
An onsen. A communal bath. With Endo.
He snatched his hands back, turning abruptly to stare at the window with renewed, intense interest, even though he couldn't actually see anything.
"Right. The bath," Sakura stammered, crossing his arms tightly. "Fine. Whatever. Just tell me where the nearest place to get a decent, greasy burger is. I'm starving."
Endo’s rich, satisfied laugh filled the quiet room. "The burger can wait. We have a reservation for dinner in one hour. And after that... well, you might want to start thinking about practicing how to look aloof while completely naked in a steaming pool of water."
The first order of business, as the okami had politely explained, was changing into the provided traditional wear. Laid out neatly on the floor were two sets of dark, soft cotton yukata and their accompanying belts.
Sakura eyed the garments with suspicion. "Are we supposed to wear this out? It looks like pajamas," he muttered, still avoiding any direct eye contact with Endo.
Endo, already halfway through his change behind a folding screen, chuckled. "It is, and it's also our evening attire, Sakura. Embrace the comfort. Besides," he paused dramatically before stepping out. "Wait till you see me."
Sakura braced himself, but nothing could have prepared him for the sight.
Endo stepped out, wearing the navy blue yukata with effortless confidence. The traditional robe, usually modest, somehow managed to highlight the breadth of his shoulders and the strong, muscular lines of his body. The soft fabric looked expensive and draped perfectly, and the collar sat low enough to reveal the subtle, tattooed line of his neck. He looked utterly gorgeous, the picture of refined, yet still dangerous, masculinity.
Sakura felt his jaw tighten. He looks ridiculous. Why does he look so good in everything? He’s supposed to be wearing stained jeans and a torn t-shirt.
"Don't look so constipated, Cherry Boy," Endo teased, adjusting the obi around his waist. "It's just clothes."
"It's stupid," Sakura mumbled, grabbing his own robe and retreating to the corner to change, his back firmly toward Endo. "It looks like you should be pouring tea, not starting a fight."
"Ah, but I can do both!" Endo said cheerfully. "And speaking of which, you've got yours on backwards."
Sakura glanced down at his chest, instantly confused and irritated. He had just wrapped the right side over the left, which he quickly realized was the custom for burial garments—a major blunder. His face immediately flamed.
Endo walked over, his movements soft in the slippers, and gently pushed Sakura's fumbling hands away. The contact was brief, but the warmth of Endo's large hands on his waist and shoulder sent a nervous flutter through Sakura.
"Always left over right, Sakura," Endo murmured, his breath warm near Sakura's ear as he deftly undid and rewrapped the garment. His movements were precise, surprisingly patient. "You wear the right side underneath the left. You don't want to accidentally summon bad luck before dinner, do you?" He straightened the collar and then gave the obi a final, snug pull. He took a satisfied step back. "Perfect. Now you look respectable."
"Don't get used to it," The smaller boy said immediately, swatting his hand away, though he felt a grudging warmth that Endo had fixed it for him.
Soon, an employee of the ryokan arrived to lay out their dinner. Sakura's petty embarrassment was instantly forgotten in a wave of new shock.
Laid out on the low table in their room was a feast of traditional cuisine. It wasn't just food; it was art. Tiny, exquisite dishes covered the table: delicate slices of sashimi, small bowls of simmered vegetables, tempura, grilled fish, fragrant rice, clear broth, and an array of colorful pickled items. Every plate was meticulously arranged and presented.
Sakura stared at the spread, completely overwhelmed. He was used to one large, simple bowl of ramen, or a messy paper tray of deep-fried street food. This was too much, too neat, too complicated.
"What... what is all this?" Sakura asked, his voice genuinely small.
Endo sat down on the cushion with a blissful sigh, his eyes sparkling as he took it all in. "It's dinner. Each one of these little beauties is a course." He picked up a tiny porcelain cup holding a bright green liquid. "Don't ask me what half of it is, but it looks expensive."
Sakura nervously reached for a bowl of rice, then hesitated. Where did he start? Did he need a manual? "I don't... I don't even know what I'm supposed to eat first. I'm going to break some rule."
Endo reached across the table and plucked a piece of sweet, perfectly grilled fish from its small plate, holding it out toward Sakura.
"Forget the rules, Sakura," Endo said, his tone soft and encouraging. "We're here to enjoy ourselves. Just try it. I promise, the only thing you have to worry about breaking tonight is your pride."
Despite his initial apprehension, Sakura found himself enjoying the dinner far more than he had anticipated. Perhaps it was due to Endo’s demeanor; the older boy, though clearly not in his usual habitat, navigated the complex array of dishes with a casual air, managing to make the experience feel less like a stuffy ceremony and more like an indulgent picnic. Or perhaps it was simply the genuine, undeniable pleasure of sharing something new and perfectly arranged with the person he cared about. He ate slowly, savoring the delicate flavors, a quiet sense of contentment replacing his earlier anxiety.
By the time the last of the savory dishes were cleared, Endo produced a small, warmed ceramic flask of sake that he'd somehow procured, seemingly from thin air.
"A celebration is incomplete without a toast," Endo announced, pouring a small, clear stream into a tiny cup and pushing it toward Sakura.
"I don't drink," Sakura said immediately, trying to wave it off. "You know I get sick just smelling that stuff."
Endo just smirked, a dangerous glint in his eye. "Nonsense, Sakura. It's our anniversary. It's medicinal. Just one cup. It'll help you relax before the onsen."
Endo’s ability to push boundaries was legendary, and tonight was no exception. Reluctantly, Sakura gave in. He lifted the cup and downed the sake in a single gulp, making a face at the sharp, warm heat that immediately spread through his chest.
One cup quickly became two. Then three.
Sakura’s tolerance, as always, proved catastrophically low. The carefully maintained composure that had served him all evening melted away with dizzying speed. Within minutes, his cheeks were flushed a deep, vibrant pink that outshone his usual color, his movements became exaggerated, and his voice was louder, more slurred, and utterly uninhibited.
He was sitting on the floor cushion, gesturing wildly while recounting some ridiculously mundane event from school that he now found hilarious. The loose knot of his obi had completely failed, and the borrowed yukata had slipped dangerously low. The right side had fallen almost entirely off his shoulder, leaving a great deal of his chest exposed and the cotton fabric clinging precariously to his waist.
Sakura, oblivious to his near-naked state, leaned toward Endo, his eyes bright and unfocused, talking a mile a minute. He poked a finger playfully at Endo’s chest.
"And then! And then he actually thought... he thought that you... were smart!" Sakura slurred, dissolving into a fit of giggles that made his exposed shoulders shake. He squinted at Endo, his expression shifting from amusement to something softer, more daring. "You know, you clean up nice, you big idiot. Who knew you could actually manage a decent date?"
Endo watched him, his own expression a mixture of profound, quiet fondness and mischievous delight. He knew exactly what was happening. This was Sakura unfiltered, the raw, affectionate core usually buried deep beneath layers of stubborn pride and aggression.
"Is that a compliment, Cherry Boy?" Endo asked, his voice low and teasing, leaning in close enough to make Sakura’s eyes widen. "You look like you're about to fall over. Maybe I should put you to bed now? Or perhaps... we could take that onsen bath you were so worried about?"
Sakura blinked slowly, the implication of the warm bath and the state of his exposed body finally registering in his wine-fogged brain. He tilted his head, his lower lip pushing out slightly as he considered the offer, the subtle flirtation unmistakable in the heavy, warm holding two fingers.
"A bath," Sakura agreed, the word coming out thicker than intended. He pushed himself off the cushion, intending to stand, but the room decided to spin violently the moment his weight shifted. He stumbled, his exposed body listing heavily toward the table and the remaining sake cups.
Endo reacted instantly. He reached out, his strong arms encircling Sakura's waist, pulling the younger boy firmly against his chest. The smaller boy landed against him with a soft, drunken thump.
"Easy, easy," Endo murmured, holding him steady, his chin resting lightly on the top of Sakura's head. The scent of sake and expensive bath salts from the ryokan mingled on Sakura's warm skin. "You're going to break something, and I don't mean a rule."
Sakura mumbled something incoherent, content to lean into the solid strength of Endo's embrace. After a moment, Endo gently pushed him back just enough to look him in the eye.
"How about this," Endo suggested, his tone soft and entirely serious. "Before we hit the hot spring, let's take a quick walk. Get some of this fine liquor out of your system. A little cold air will clear that cute head of yours."
Sakura blinked slowly, thinking it over. The heat of the room felt stifling, and the spinning in his head was annoying. "Walk. Okay. Fine."
Endo helped him slide the yukata back up his shoulder and cinch the belt just enough to keep him decent. They left the quiet ryokan and stepped out into the crisp, cool autumn night.
The moment the fresh, cool mountain air hit Sakura's face, he felt a flicker of clarity return. He took a deep, shaky breath, the scents of pine and damp earth sharp in his nostrils.
They walked along a quiet, paved path bordering the inn's small garden. Sakura walked close to Endo, but held himself with his usual stubborn reserve. Instead of taking Endo's hand—a gesture too intimate and soft for his liking—Sakura reached out and threaded just two fingers, his index and middle, through Endo's. It was just enough contact to maintain the connection without sacrificing his pride.
With every step, the fog in Sakura's brain began to recede. He didn't speak; he just concentrated on the simple act of walking. He let his arm swing gently, feeling the easy, rhythmic motion of their linked fingers.
The darkness felt comforting, and the rhythmic swing of his arm, connected only by two fingers to Endo, gave him a grounding reassurance. The sake hadn't completely worn off—he still felt loose and bold—but the cold air was doing its work, pulling him back from the edge of drunken incoherence and into a more functional, flirtatious buzz.
He still had an onsen to deal with, after all. And he needed his wits for that.
The short walk did wonders. By the time they returned to the ryokan, Sakura’s head had mostly cleared—though a bold, pleasant warmth from the sake still lingered. The embarrassment over the onsen had crept back in, but now it carried an edge of restless anticipation he couldn’t quite suppress.
Endo paused near the hallway leading to the baths and turned to face him.
“Feeling steady enough? We can head straight to bed if you want. But that water’s calling your name.”
“Shut up,” Sakura muttered, though his gaze had already flicked down the corridor. “Let’s just go. Don’t waste the money you worked all night for, idiot.”
Endo grinned, pleased by the surrender.
They were shown to the men’s changing room for the outdoor bath—a simple space with wooden lockers and a low stool. Sakura’s tension spiked the moment they started to undress.
He kept his back to Endo, carefully folding his yukata into the locker with exaggerated precision. The shyness was sharp and familiar. Even after a year, the idea of being so casually, completely exposed felt like a mountain he still hadn’t climbed. He focused on the locker door as if it held the secrets of the universe.
Endo, naturally unbothered, was already done. He tossed his yukata and obi into his locker without a second thought and walked over, making Sakura flinch.
“Relax, Sakura,” Endo said softly, reaching not for him but for the small modesty towel. “Looks like we’ve got the place to ourselves tonight.”
The boy with heterochromia snatched up his own towel, clutching it in front of him like a shield.
“I know,” he muttered, feeling heat rise in his cheeks. He turned quickly toward the door. “Let’s just get this over with.”
Endo chuckled—a low, easy sound—and followed him out.
They entered the cleansing area: a warm, humid space lined with low wooden stools and taps. Sakura scrubbed with brisk, nervous energy, soap and water flying as he rushed to finish. Endo, as always, took his time—methodical, calm—occasionally glancing at Sakura with a look that was equal parts patient and teasing.
Finally, they were ready. Towels in hand, they stepped through the last wooden gate.
A wave of humid, sulfur-scented steam hit them, curling into the cool night air.
Sakura froze, breath catching in his throat.
The onsen spread before them like a dream—an irregular pool carved into stone, surrounded by mossy walls and open to the vast, star-scattered sky. The water glowed faintly milky-blue under the lantern light, steam rising in slow, ghostly plumes. The soft murmur of a distant stream drifted through the night.
“See?” Endo murmured, dropping his towel onto a rock. “Told you it was worth it.”
Sakura let his own towel fall, nerves dissolving under the sheer beauty of it. Without hesitation, he stepped forward and eased into the water.
Heat enveloped him instantly, loosening every knot in his body. The tension, the sake, the embarrassment—all of it melted into the soothing embrace of the spring. He leaned back against the smooth stone edge, sighed deeply, and tilted his head toward the sky. Stars shimmered above, blurred by the rising steam.
Endo slid in beside him, close enough that their shoulders brushed. He rested an arm along the rock, gaze fixed on Sakura with quiet satisfaction.
Sakura let out a slow, heavy sigh, the sound dissolving into the surrounding mist. He stared up at the endless, dark expanse of the night sky, a few distant stars piercing the steam.
No one ever prepared me for this, he thought. His life, by design and temperament, was usually defined by noise, conflict, and defensive walls. Yet this day—the stunning autumnal view, the ridiculously refined inn, the gentle attention from Endo, and now this serene, quiet heat—felt like something he would forever tuck away in the deepest part of his memory, the part reserved for the most precious, unexpected treasures. It was, unequivocally, one of the best days of his life.
He didn't need to say it out loud. The peaceful slump of his shoulders, the softness around his eyes, and the lingering, quiet appreciation radiating off him spoke volumes.
Endo, resting beside him, was acutely attuned to every subtle shift in Sakura's mood. He didn't interrupt the silence, but after a few moments, he acted on the unspoken emotion hanging between them.
Submerged in the milky water, Endo carefully reached out a hand, searching for Sakura's. When his fingers brushed against the younger boy's, he gently curled his hand around it and squeezed, a firm, warm pressure that was both possessive and deeply comforting.
He didn't say anything, but the message was clear: I see you. I know this is important to you. And I'm right here.
Sakura squeezed back instantly, not with the two fingers of grudging acknowledgement, but with his whole hand, his earlier reserve completely abandoned in the warm, steamy sanctuary.
He turned his head to look at Endo, who met his gaze with a tender, satisfied smile. "You're not going to tease me about how relaxing this is, are you?" Sakura finally mumbled, trying to salvage a shred of his pride.
Endo shook his head slightly, his eyes soft. "Not tonight, Sakura. Tonight, you get to just enjoy it. Happy anniversary."
The water was warm, the silence was deep, and the moment, suspended between the stars and the steam, was finally ripe.
Sakura looked at Endo's soft, sincere smile, and all the words he couldn't say—thank you for the effort, thank you for the quiet, thank you for understanding—coalesced into a single, resolute action.
He leaned forward, slowly bridging the small distance between them in the water.
His lips met Endo's in a kiss that was slow, deliberate, and gentle. It wasn't the hard, rough kiss of passion or a hurried, street-corner exchange; it was soft, hesitant, and infused with profound gratitude. It was, purely and simply, a thank you.
Endo responded instantly, his grip tightening on Sakura's hand beneath the surface. He didn't rush it, savoring the tender, rare sweetness.
As their lips separated slightly, Endo let out a low, contented sound, his breath warm against Sakura's mouth. He didn't need words. He just smiled, a deep, satisfied grin pressing against the younger boy’s lips before he deepened the kiss, allowing the gentle appreciation to evolve into something much more possessive and heated, right there under the silent stars.
The morning arrived not with an alarm, but with the gentle, diffused light filtering through the paper screen of the shoji window. The silence in the traditional room was absolute, broken only by the sound of peaceful, even breathing beside him.
Sakura was the first to wake, his eyes fluttering open to the soft light. For a moment, he was utterly confused, the smell of crisp tatami and the unfamiliar texture of the heavy futon underneath him taking a moment to register.
Then, memory rushed back—the onsen, the kisses, the sudden, fierce urgency of their desire once they had finally retreated from the water.
He was pressed tightly against a wall of warm, muscular flesh. He was tangled in the sheets, and his own body felt gloriously heavy, utterly relaxed, and subtly, pleasantly sore in places he hadn't realized he possessed.
He risked a peek.
Endo was deeply asleep, his face turned toward Sakura. His dark hair was messy against the pillow, and his usually intense features were softened in sleep. A protective, heavy arm was draped across Sakura’s torso, holding him securely in place.
But the most telling signs were scattered around the quiet room.
The two thick futons they had started with were now completely rumpled into one enormous, chaotic nest in the center of the floor. The thin cotton yukata Sakura had been wearing—the one Endo had so carefully fixed—was nowhere in sight, having been abandoned somewhere in the night's fervor. Endo’s was similarly missing, perhaps kicked under the low table.
On the polished wood floor near the discarded belts, a crumpled package of what looked like condoms had been hastily tossed. A slight, sweet aroma of sex and warm skin hung faintly in the air, a silent testament to the night’s shared intensity.
Sakura felt his face heat up, not with embarrassment this time, but with a shy, deep warmth. He carefully slid his fingers around the wrist of the arm draped over him, tracing the fine lines of Endo's tattoos.
He was happy. Completely, utterly, and fiercely happy.
He turned his head slightly and rested his chin against Endo's shoulder, taking a slow, contented breath. The day felt perfect, already marked by the lingering heat and the beautiful mess of their intimacy. He decided he was fine staying exactly where he was, pressed close to the body of the idiot who had worked night shifts just to bring him here.
Happy anniversary, he thought, letting his eyes drift closed again. He'd worry about the crumpled condoms and the missing clothes later. For now, he just wanted to savor the aftermath.
A few hours later, a groan rumbled against Sakura’s ear, pulling him gently from the edge of sleep. He shifted slightly, feeling the arm around him stir.
Endo was waking up.
The smaller kept his eyes closed, feigning sleep, a small, secret smile playing on his lips. He loved this closeness, this quiet aftermath.
Endo stretched slowly, his muscles rippling against Sakura’s back. A deep, satisfied sigh escaped him, and then Sakura felt a soft, warm kiss pressed against the nape of his neck, just beneath his ear.
"Morning, Cherry Boy," Endo murmured, his voice husky with sleep and affection. "Slept well?"
Sakura pretended to stretch languidly, turning over to face him. His eyes fluttered open, meeting Endo's soft gaze. He was still half-buried in the futon, the sheets tangled around his waist, leaving his chest bare. Endo was in much the same state, equally disheveled and enticing.
"Define 'well'," Sakura mumbled, his voice still thick with sleep, a faint blush creeping up his neck. He saw the gleam in Endo's eyes, the way his gaze lingered on Sakura's exposed chest, and a shiver of anticipation ran through him.
Endo chuckled, a low, rich sound. He reached out and gently brushed a stray strand of black hair from Sakura's forehead. His fingers lingered, tracing the curve of Sakura's cheekbone, then gliding down to his jawline.
"I define 'well' as waking up with you right here," Endo said, his voice dropping to a seductive purr. His eyes held a deep, sensual warmth. "And maybe a little bit of this."
He leaned in slowly, giving the younger boy ample time to pull away, but Sakura did no such thing. Instead, he met Endo halfway, his own hand reaching up to cup the back of Endo's neck, pulling him closer.
Their lips met, soft and languid at first, tasting of sleep and lingering passion. Endo's hand slid from Sakura's jaw, across his shoulder, and down his bare arm, his touch leaving a trail of goosebumps. He pulled the two tone haired boy closer, until there was no space left between their bodies, the warmth of skin against skin igniting a familiar spark.
They lay face-to-face, their foreheads touching, their eyes half-closed. Endo ran a large, tender hand down the damp curve of Sakura's spine, a slow, gentle stroke of ownership and deep affection. Sakura sighed into the space between their mouths, a sound of absolute surrender.
The older boy didn't speak. Instead, he leaned forward, initiating a slow, lingering kiss. There was no urgency, no demand for climax—only languid, deep-seated pleasure. Their lips met softly, testing the water, before opening to allow a slow, deliberate exploration.
Endo’s tongue moved lazily, tasting the residue of their passion and the faint sweetness of the alcohol. It was a kiss designed for prolonged connection, a soft, intimate consumption of the other. Sakura met the rhythm perfectly, his own tongue gently tracing the inside of Endo’s mouth, a soft, reciprocal movement that sent shivers of exhausted delight through them both.
With every deep, wet kiss, a soft sigh escaped them, melting into the shared warmth.
While their mouths remained fused, Endo’s hand moved from Sakura’s spine to his side, his fingers spreading out across the smooth skin of his ribs. He applied the softest of pressure, mapping the contours of Sakura’s lean torso.
The two toned haired boy, utterly relaxed, raised his hand and rested his palm lightly on the hard, beating center of Endo’s chest. He felt the heavy, slow thump of Endo’s heart beneath his fingers, a profound anchor in the post-climax haze.
Their lips finally parted, leaving a thread of moisture between them. Endo immediately chased the separation, pressing his lips to the corner of Sakura’s mouth, then trailing soft, possessive kisses down his jaw.
Sakura felt the unmistakable hardness of Endo pressing against him, mirroring his own growing arousal. He arched into the touch, letting out a soft whimper of desire.
The older boy broke the kiss, pulling back just enough to look into Sakura's half-lidded eyes. "Ready for round two?" he whispered, his voice thick with desire, his thumb gently stroking the sensitive skin of Sakura’s inner thigh.
Sakura didn't need to answer with words. He tightened his grip on Endo's neck, pulling him down for another hungry kiss, a clear, eager invitation. The crumpled condom package from the night before was quickly forgotten as the futons became a tangle of limbs, hushed moans, and renewed, passionate embrace.
The late morning sun finally coaxed them out of the warm tangle of sheets. After a shared, lingering hot shower—which was less about hygiene and more about generating steam and heat—they finally emerged, refreshed and radiating that particular, satisfied glow of the newly pleasured.
They dressed in their own, familiar gear: Sakura in his durable, dark athletic pants and a simple hoodie; Endo in his favorite faded t-shirt and rugged cargo trousers. The contrast to the delicate yukata and the serene ryokan was stark, but wearing their own clothes felt grounding, a return to their true selves.
"Right," Endo announced "Time to put some distance between us and the scent of our indiscretions. My suggestion: a gentle ramble along the river course. There's a spot called Taisho Pond nearby—apparently, it's famous for looking dramatic and volcanic. Sounds appropriately chaotic for us."
Sakura simply nodded, grabbing his small backpack. He felt too content to argue. The air was cool, the sky was a dazzling blue, and he had Endo, looking annoyingly handsome, beside him.
They soon found the easy walking path that traced the clear, rushing Azusa River.
They had been walking for about twenty minutes, admiring the towering peaks and the vibrant autumn foliage, when Endo suddenly froze, his hand shooting out to slam Sakura against a nearby pine tree.
"Quiet," Endo hissed, his eyes wide, fixed on a dense patch of undergrowth about fifty feet ahead. His grip on Sakura's arm was iron-hard. "Did you hear that? I heard a growl. It's probably a bear."
Sakura's heart rate spiked instantly. He immediately reverted to fighting mode, pushing his hoodie back slightly to free his arms. "Bear? Seriously? We don't have spray! We'll have to take it down."
The older boy was nodding, his face grim. "If it comes out, aim for the nose, Sakura! I'll distract it."
They stood tense for a solid minute, staring intently at the rustling bushes. Finally, a small, furry, and extremely fluffy creature waddled out, stopped, and blinked at them before continuing to nibble a fallen chestnut. It was a chubby mountain marmot.
Endo slowly released Sakura, blinking. "Oh. Right. It's a... a large squirrel."
Sakura shoved him hard, ignoring the affection in his chest and letting the irritation take over. "A bear, you idiot? You practically gave me a coronary over a glorified chipmunk!"
Endo rubbed his arm, still grinning. "Hey, it made a growly noise! My instincts are tuned to city brawls, not woodland critters, Cherry Boy! Besides, you looked incredibly fierce, ready to defend me. Very cute."
They reached a wide, flat stretch of the path near a bridge, where the ground was scattered with large, smooth, river-worn rocks. Sakura, still energized from the morning and the slight adrenaline rush of the 'bear' scare, decided to jump from one rock to the next, proving his agility.
Endo, however, was walking with a lazy, confident swagger, hands tucked in his pockets.
"Watch this, Sakura," Endo drawled, stepping casually onto what looked like a perfectly flat, stable rock.
It wasn't.
The rock was perfectly flat, but resting precariously on another, hidden stone. The moment Endo put his weight on it, it tilted, and Endo, with a shout that was more startled indignation than pain, lost his balance completely. He didn't fall, but his right leg plunged up to the knee into a hidden mud puddle between the rocks.
Sakura stopped his own perfectly executed jump and stared down at his boyfriend, whose cargo trousers leg was now soaked in dark, cold sludge.
Endo slowly pulled his muddy leg out and looked down at it, then up at Sakura.
"Don't," Endo warned, his eyes narrowed, anticipating the taunt.
Sakura burst out laughing—a loud, free, uncontrollable sound that echoed off the mountains. He had to bend over, clutching his stomach, tears pricking his eyes. "Waterproof, Endo! You needed waterproof!"
Endo sighed, shaking his head. "Fine. You can help me clean my trousers in the river, Cherry Boy. Since you're so good at finding the water in the onsen." He gave Sakura a slow, suggestive wink, turning the muddy disaster into an immediate, blatant flirtation.
Sakura instantly stopped laughing, the blood rushing to his face, and he grabbed Endo's clean hand, pulling him forward. "Let's just go. You're impossible."
The taller boy didn't resist, letting Sakura drag his muddy foot along. "Impossible, but worth the trouble, right?"
Sakura didn't answer, but the firm, affectionate grip he maintained on Endo's hand spoke volumes. The chaos was fun, the scenery was beautiful, and being this simple, this happy with Endo, was everything.
The path eventually led them back from the wilder river course and toward the small, settled part of the valley. A simple, weathered torii gate marked the entrance to a local shrine, nestled quietly beneath a canopy of vibrant maple leaves.
Neither of them were particularly devout, their faith tending to lie more in strength, loyalty, and the chaotic beauty of life itself rather than organized religion. But the shrine was peaceful, and the cool shade was inviting.
"Well, look at this," Endo mused, slowing their pace. "A local deity. Maybe we should offer a prayer for better luck with our choice of travel pants."
"Don't be an idiot," Sakura muttered, though he followed Endo toward the main hall. He still maintained a respectful silence as they passed the purification fountain, even if he didn't use it.
They didn't linger long at the main altar, but their attention was captured by the small, brightly lit wooden stand selling omamori—protective amulets. They were hung neatly in rows, labeled with various fortunes and wishes: health, safe travel, passing exams, and prosperity.
Endo immediately gravitated toward the more sentimental section, picking up a pair of matching, heart-shaped amulets tied with bright red cord.
"Ooh, look at these, Sakura," Endo teased, holding them up. "A fūfu anzen—safe marriage and harmony. Should we grab these? You know, for when we finally take the plunge and you have to cook me all those perfectly balanced, non-greasy meals."
Sakura snatched the amulets out of Endo's hand and shoved them back onto the rack, his face instantly heating up. "We are not getting married! And I'm not cooking you anything that isn't instant ramen! Put those down before someone thinks we're serious."
Endo just laughed, a deep, satisfied sound at Sakura’s flustered reaction. "Relax, Cherry Boy. We're just browsing. But look here..."
He pointed to a slightly larger, pink and white embroidered charm. Sakura squinted at the label.
"Ah, the kodakara charm," Endo read aloud with exaggerated reverence. "For blessing and protecting children. Maybe we should get this one? Just in case, you know. With how wild we were last night, we might need some divine intervention." He waggled his eyebrows suggestively.
Sakura hit him hard on the shoulder, his embarrassment spiking so fiercely it almost hurt. "We can't have kids! And stop talking about last night where people can hear you!"
"Technically, they have to hear it over all the cicadas and the river noise, Sakura," Endo pointed out, deftly sidestepping another swat. He finally settled on a plain, dark blue amulet for safe journeys and tossed the small required offering into the box.
"There," Endo said, tying the charm loosely to the loop on his backpack. "Now, the road back will be safe. Though if you keep blushing like that, you're going to overheat. Let's find you some soft serve, Cherry Boy."
Sakura let out a frustrated, affectionate grunt, but he followed, a small, genuine smile finally breaking through his facade. Despite the inappropriate jokes, it was nice to know that even here, Endo was looking out for him.
They left the quiet sanctuary of the shrine, the dark blue travel amulet swinging gently from Endo's backpack. The sun was now high, and the fresh air had completely burned off the last traces of sake, leaving Sakura fully alert—and perhaps a little too ready to nitpick.
They rounded a bend in the path and came upon a small, ramshackle snack stand near the main bus terminal, advertising local sweets and drinks. Endo immediately veered toward it.
"Perfect," Endo announced, already pulling a wad of crumpled bills from his pocket. "I need one of those ridiculously colorful shaved ice things. You get anything you want, Sakura."
Sakura was about to order when his eyes landed on a discarded plastic water bottle lying half-hidden under a bench. It was one of the few pieces of visible litter he’d seen in the pristine valley, and it irritated him instantly. Just as he bent to pick it up, however, a sound caught his attention—a soft, shaky whimpering.
Around the corner of the snack stand, a small boy, no older than four, sat huddled by a wooden railing. He was wearing bright red shorts and clutching a dinosaur toy, his face wet with tears. He was clearly lost.
Sakura immediately felt a spike of intense awkwardness. He was great at facing down thugs and challenging battles, but small, distressed children were entirely outside his comfort zone. He felt clumsy and unsure, rooted to the spot.
"Endo, wait," Sakura muttered, nodding toward the child. "Look."
Endo was already halfway through ordering a bright blue syrupy ice creation. He glanced over and immediately abandoned his purchase, turning to the boy.
"Seriously? We need to find his parents," Endo said, but his voice was already gentler, losing its teasing edge. He walked over to the child, and to Sakura’s utter astonishment, the older boy dropped easily into a low crouch, bringing himself eye-level with the little boy.
Endo’s large, tattooed hand rested softly on his knee, and his face—usually marked by a cocky smirk—was completely patient and kind.
"Hey there, little guy," Endo said, his voice quiet and soothing. "What's wrong? Are you okay? That's a really cool dinosaur."
The boy sniffled, holding the toy tighter. "Lost," he whispered, pointing vaguely toward the forest path. "Mommy is gone."
Endo offered the child a genuine, gentle smile. "Ah, I see. Well, that's okay. We can find her. What's your name?"
Sakura watched the entire interaction, completely transfixed. He had never seen this side of Endo—this unexpected, profound patience and innate gentleness. The way Endo completely lowered himself, the focus in his eyes, the immediate, protective kindness he extended to a vulnerable child—it struck a chord deep inside Sakura.
A sudden, overwhelming warmth flooded Sakura's chest, chasing away the anxiety and the earlier irritation. He felt his throat tighten with unspoken emotion. This was the same guy who reveled in chaos and brawls, yet here he was, being the most reliable, comforting presence a scared child could ask for.
He's incredible, Sakura thought, his heart swelling. It was an intimacy more profound than any kiss or anniversary gift, witnessing this hidden depth of character.
"Come here," Endo said, finally looking up and spotting Sakura hovering awkwardly. "We need to figure out which direction he came from. Don't worry, we'll find his mom in no time."
Sakura stepped forward immediately, the forgotten plastic bottle still clutched in his hand. The initial tension of their brief disagreement had vanished, replaced by a shared, urgent responsibility. He was still awkward with the child, but he was completely in awe of the man beside him.
With their new, tiny companion in tow, Sakura and Endo began to backtrack down the path. Endo gently helped the boy to his feet, and the child, still a bit shaky, immediately reached out. Instinctively, the small hand slipped into Endo’s larger, calloused one. After a moment, the boy offered his free hand to Sakura.
Sakura hesitated for a split second, then gently accepted the tiny, damp grip.
And so they walked: the little boy in his bright red shorts and dinosaur toy toddling happily in the middle, held securely by the scarred fist of a street fighter and the hesitant grip of a fiercely protective boy.
Endo glanced down at the arrangement, then across at Sakura, a wide, wicked grin spreading across his face.
"Well, now," Endo drawled, giving the boy’s hand a little swing. "Don't we look domestic? We're a proper little family unit, aren't we, Sakura? Just need a minivan and a golden retriever."
Sakura’s face instantly flushed. He tightened his grip on the small hand on his own, more to steady his nerves than the child. "Shut up! Just walk! We aren’t parents, and we aren’t getting a minivan!"
The truth, however, was that the sentiment—the sudden, simple domesticity of the sight—didn't displease him at all. The image of Endo crouched down, all gentle patience and unexpected warmth, had genuinely rattled him in the best possible way. This simple walk, united by the small hand between them, felt unexpectedly right.
They continued their search, and the boy, emboldened by their presence, started chatting.
"What's your favorite food?" Endo asked the boy, steering him around a protruding root.
"Chicken nuggets!" the boy announced with the conviction of a tiny emperor. "And fries!"
"Excellent choice," Endo agreed, nodding sagely. "A true connoisseur. See, Sakura? He gets it. None of that fussy little fish or pickled vegetable nonsense from the ryokan."
Sakura frowned, looking down at the child. "Chicken nuggets are garbage. You should eat actual food that grows in the ground."
The boy looked up at Sakura, confused. "But dinosaurs eat meat," he stated simply, holding up his toy.
"He's got you there," Endo chuckled, squeezing the kid's fingers. "Our son has a point. Dinosaur logic trumps your nutritional snobbery."
Sakura let out a frustrated grunt. "He is not our son! Just focus on the path!"
A little while later, the boy, who had finally exhausted his dinosaur knowledge, started examining Endo’s forearm, which was fully exposed by his short sleeves.
"What's this?" the boy asked, tracing the swirling ink with a curious finger.
Endo stopped, holding his arm steady. "Those are pictures, buddy. Like cool stickers that don't wash off."
"Are you a pirate?"
"I have been accused of being worse," Endo answered, winking. "But yes, let's go with pirates."
"Wow," the boy breathed, utterly fascinated. "I want tattoos like that when I'm big!"
Sakura quickly interjected, pulling their joint hands a little forward. "No, you don't. Tattoos hurt, and they get you kicked out of nice onsen," he said pointedly, shooting a glare at Endo.
Endo just laughed, giving Sakura's hand a small tug. "Don't listen to him, kid. Tattoos are fun, and they make people know you mean business."
After nearly two hours of walking, joking, and navigating the winding paths, they heard muffled shouts in the distance.
"Is that Mommy?" the little boy chirped, recognizing the sound.
Endo immediately shouted back, a loud, clear call that cut through the forest. "We found him! We have the dinosaur expert!"
A moment later, two figures burst onto the path—a woman in her late thirties looking pale with panic, and an elderly woman, equally distraught. The mother gasped, running forward and collapsing on her knees to hug her son tightly.
"Oh, thank goodness! Kenta! I was so scared! Don't you ever run off like that!" she sobbed, checking him over.
The grandmother rushed up, her hands clasped. They both looked up at the two tall boys standing there—one fierce-looking with two toned hairs, the other tattooed and casual—who had returned their precious child.
"We cannot thank you enough," the mother said, tears streaming down her face. "We thought... oh, thank you. You have saved us so much worry."
The grandmother bowed repeatedly, deeply grateful. "You boys are heroes. Truly, heroes. We are staying just up that path. Please, let us offer you something, anything!"
Endo gently waved away the offer, his usual bravado replaced by a genuine humility. "No need. We're just glad he's safe. He's a good kid." He gave Kenta a final, soft ruffle on the head. "Go easy on the chicken nuggets, buddy."
Sakura simply nodded, offering a small, stiff bow. He felt a deep surge of satisfaction. They hadn't fought a gang or saved a town, but they had helped.
As the mother and grandmother led the relieved Kenta away, Endo turned back to Sakura, a warm, shared look passing between them.
"See, Sakura?" Endo murmured, sliding his hand back into Sakura's, this time taking his whole hand without permission. "I told you we were meant for good things. Now, I definitely deserve that ice cream. And maybe a very large, greasy burger when we get back to the city."
Sakura didn't pull his hand away. He squeezed Endo's fingers, a genuine smile returning to his lips. "Fine. But I'm choosing the restaurant this time."
"Endo."
They were walking back toward the ryokan, the afternoon light filtering softly through the trees, their hands firmly linked now—no more two-finger excuses. The high of finding Kenta's mother, combined with the gentle intimacy of the morning, had completely softened Sakura’s edges.
Endo glanced down at him, a familiar, easy smile on his lips. "What is it, Sakura? Don't tell me you're starting to miss the little guy already?"
Sakura looked at their feet moving in tandem on the path for a moment, gathering his courage. He then lifted his gaze to Endo’s face, his expression earnest and slightly vulnerable.
"No, I mean... yes, he was fine," Sakura admitted, his voice low. "But... I liked the way you were with him."
The raven haired boy raised an eyebrow, genuinely curious. "The pirate talk? Or the almost-getting-us-attacked-by-a-marmot part?"
"No," Sakura insisted, nudging Endo's arm. "The other part. When you first spoke to him, at the stall. You were so... gentle. And you didn't tease him at all. You looked like you actually cared." He paused, a faint flush creeping up his neck. "It was nice. I liked seeing that side of you."
A warm, deep satisfaction settled in Endo's chest. He knew that praise from Sakura, especially regarding something this sincere, was a rare and precious gift. He stopped walking and turned to face Sakura completely, pulling their joined hands up between them.
"I do care, Sakura," Endo said, his eyes crinkling in a sincere, affectionate grin. "It's hard to hate on little kids. They haven't had time to become boring adults yet." He gave Sakura's hand a small, proprietary squeeze.
Then, the inevitable tease returned, but softened by the genuine emotion of the moment.
Endo leaned in, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "So, you saw Dad mode, huh? You know what that means, right?"
Sakura's eyes narrowed. "No. What?"
"Maybe it's a sign," Endo said, waggling his eyebrows suggestively. "Maybe the universe is telling us that after that perfect morning, it's time to start working on getting our own little Cherry Boy to run around."
Sakura snatched his hand back, his face instantly exploding in bright, furious red. "Stop it! We can't have children, you pervert! And we are not a family! Let's just go find the onsen again and forget you ever said that!"
Endo burst into laughter, looping his arm around Sakura's neck and pulling him close as they started walking again. "Whatever you say, Sakura. Whatever you say. But a guy can dream, right?"
They didn't stay long at the outdoor bath the second time, emerging when the twilight was deepening, the air turning sharply cold. The hot water, however, had left them feeling pleasantly heavy, their limbs slack with relaxation.
Back in the warm, dimly lit ryokan room, the futons had been tidied and re-laid by the staff during their absence, transforming the space into a cozy sanctuary.
Endo closed the sliding door, his eyes immediately locking on Sakura's. The day's events—the shared laughter, the unexpected tenderness with the child, and the earlier passion—had stripped away the last of Sakura's defenses, leaving him open and beautifully receptive. A quiet, potent energy thrummed between them, thick with anticipation and trust.
They moved together to the layered futons. Endo eased Sakura onto his back, their lips meeting in a deep, consuming kiss that expressed all the desire and gratitude built up over the long, complicated day.
As their passion escalated, Endo reached for the bedside table, but Sakura's hand shot out, catching his wrist.
Sakura looked up at him, his cheeks flushed, his eyes holding a clear, unshakeable resolution. "Not tonight," Sakura whispered, his voice trembling slightly with the weight of the decision. "I don't... not tonight."
The silence that followed was immense. Endo stared at him, his breath hitching, fully understanding the colossal weight of this admission of trust. His eyes darkened with sudden, overwhelming adoration.
"Sakura," Endo breathed out, his voice thick with awe. "Are you sure?"
He nodded, sealing the pact with a hungry kiss. "I trust you," he murmured against Endo's mouth.
Endo accepted the confession with a low, guttural sound of emotion. He pulled back slightly, his hand already moving to begin the careful, necessary preparation, wanting to be gentle and thorough.
However, the instant his fingers made contact, Endo stopped dead, his brow furrowing in surprise. He paused, looking down, then looked back up at Sakura with an expression of utter bewilderment, mixed with dawning humor.
"Wait a minute," Endo whispered, fighting a sudden, incredulous laugh. "Did you... did you just prepare yourself? While we were washing up? You beat me to it, Cherry Boy!"
Sakura instantly turned a brilliant, painful crimson. He squeezed his eyes shut and tried to yank the sheet over his head, mortified that his meticulous planning had been so thoroughly exposed.
"Shut up! Don't look at me!" Sakura hissed, thrashing weakly beneath him. "I thought you were going to tease me about the onsen, so I—I was just being efficient!"
Endo completely lost it. He collapsed onto the pillow beside Sakura, shaking with silent, chest-rattling laughter. It was the perfect, ridiculous, Sakura thing to do—to plan the logistics of their most intimate moment ahead of time to minimize awkwardness.
"Efficient!" Endo choked out, trying to regain control, wiping a tear from his eye. "You're incredible! You spent the whole day panicking about being seen, only to sneak off and get ready in the bathroom! That's the most tsundere preparation I've ever witnessed!"
Despite his shame, Sakura couldn't help the small, involuntary smile that tugged at his lips.
Endo eventually pushed himself up, still grinning, but his eyes were filled with a burning, fierce desire. The unexpected antic had only amplified his arousal, proving how deeply he loved every absurd facet of Sakura's personality.
"Fine," Endo said, his voice now husky with passion, low and serious. "You are officially too good for me, Sakura. But since you've done all the hard work already..."
He leaned down, capturing Sakura's lips in a kiss that was both tender and intensely demanding. His previous care was now replaced by the urgency of their mutual arousal, fueled by the sheer excitement of this boundary crossed and the humor of its execution.
Endo plunged forward, entering Sakura in a slow, deep motion, and Sakura cried out softly, instantly consumed. The laughter was gone, replaced by the hushed sounds of their shared pleasure. It was fierce, passionate, and marked by a raw intimacy that no protection could ever separate, solidifying the monumental trust they had exchanged.
The initial discovery and humor quickly vanished, replaced entirely by the consuming heat and deep intimacy of the moment. Endo was slow, deliberate, focusing solely on the profound sensation of their skin-on-skin connection.
He was inside Sakura now, and the feeling—the sheer, uninhibited warmth and friction without the barrier—was dizzying, electrifying. He settled into a slow, rocking rhythm, deep and anchoring, determined to prolong the sensation.
He kept his upper body low, maintaining intense eye contact with Sakura, their faces only inches apart. Endo’s lips were constantly touching Sakura’s—sometimes a deep, searching kiss, sometimes just a soft press, their mouths remaining fused even as they moved.
"You feel incredible," Endo whispered against Sakura's lips, the words escaping on a ragged breath. "God, you're so warm."
Sakura was breathless, his hands tightly gripping Endo's sweat-dampened shoulders. He couldn't speak, only moaning softly into their shared kiss, the raw sensation flooding his senses. The difference without the barrier was vast, making every thrust feel overwhelming, personal, and utterly real.
Endo broke the kiss just enough to shift his weight. His large, tattooed hand left Sakura's hip and slid down his thigh, a slow, sensual stroke. He curved his fingers behind Sakura's knee, lifting his leg gently and drawing it up toward his own shoulder.
The movement immediately altered the angle, pulling Sakura's hips into a deeper, more vulnerable position. Endo’s penetration sharpened, becoming impossibly deep, eliciting a sharp, choked gasp from Sakura.
Endo drove into the new depth, maintaining the slow rhythm, his eyes locked on Sakura's, watching the ripple of pleasure travel through his body.
"Too much?" Endo asked, his voice thick, his forehead resting against Sakura's. The question was a low murmur, their breath mingling.
Sakura managed a choked shake of his head, his fingers digging into Endo's back. "No," he panted, his voice a desperate plea. "Don't stop. Please."
He started to drive, building the pace slowly but surely. He kept his mouth fused to Sakura's, using his kisses to absorb the cries and gasps. He drove them closer and closer to the edge, the profound sensation of skin against skin making the impending release unbearable.
Suddenly, Sakura’s body tensed, an electrical wave of sensation shooting through him. He pulled back his head from the kiss, a soundless cry escaping his lips as his hips arched fiercely off the futon.
Endo watched him, his own face tight with exertion and affection. He didn't break their connection, but he slowed his movements to a near halt, using the intense pressure and the angle to hold Sakura suspended in the final moments of his release. He kissed Sakura's forehead, eyes burning with reverence as the younger boy finally crested, his body trembling beneath him.
The younger boy collapsed, breathless and weak, his face buried in the pillow.
Endo waited, gently pressing their foreheads together, catching his own ragged breath. He brushed the damp black and white hair from Sakura's temple, murmuring a soft, loving nothing into his ear. He let the stillness settle, his presence a heavy, comforting weight.
He then shifted, moving his hips slightly. He kept their connection deep and unbroken, but he reached down and gently repositioned Sakura's leg, pulling it back down from his shoulder and resting it against his chest. It was a small, tender adjustment that reframed the weight and the angle.
With the physical moment recalibrated and the tenderness reinforced, Endo allowed the need he had fiercely suppressed to take over. He pulled Sakura’s hips close and began to move again, fast and urgently now, driving toward his own release with powerful, uninhibited thrusts.
He only lasted a few moments. His name tore from his throat in a raw, thick sound, and he surged forward in a final, shuddering release, collapsing heavily onto Sakura. His arms wrapped around the younger boy tightly, pulling him into a sweat-slick embrace as his body trembled with the powerful aftershocks of pleasure, completing their deepest act of intimacy.
The heavy silence of the aftermath settled over the room, broken only by the sound of their ragged breathing and the frantic pounding of their hearts against each other's chests. Endo collapsed heavily on Sakura, his arms locked around him, his face buried into the soft skin of Sakura’s neck.
The boy underneath him felt utterly boneless, suspended in the haze of spent pleasure.
It was in this moment of perfect, shared stillness that Sakura became acutely aware of the warmth and wetness sliding down his inner thigh. He let out a soft, involuntary noise—a small, despairing sound that was part moan, part resigned groan.
Endo lifted his head instantly, his eyes still glazed with the lingering heat of climax. "What?" he murmured, his voice thick and drowsy. "Did I crush you? I'm sorry, Sakura."
Sakura squirmed slightly, feeling the evidence of their latest act pooling beneath him. "It's... it's disgusting, Endo," he mumbled into the pillow, his voice laced with embarrassment. "It's everywhere. I need a shower."
The older boy chuckled, a rich, satisfied rumble in his chest. He didn't move, instead nuzzling Sakura’s neck with lingering affection.
"Relax, Cherry Boy. That's just a byproduct of a very successful night," Endo drawled, his voice regaining its teasing lilt. He tightened his arms around Sakura, pulling him impossibly closer.
Then, he couldn't resist the joke.
"Besides," Endo continued, his grin wide and wicked, "this is exactly how the process starts, you know. Now we just wait a few months, and maybe we'll have a little Cherry Boy running around. You did say you liked the way I was with Kenta."
Sakura's body went instantly rigid, and his cheeks, already flushed from the exertion, turned a furious, undeniable crimson.
"Endo, shut up!" Sakura hissed, shoving weakly at the broad chest pinning him down. "We are both guys! It doesn't work that way, you idiot! And I was being sincere! Don't ruin it!"
The other boy laughed, a deep, triumphant sound, utterly pleased by Sakura's predictable, flustered reaction. He finally rolled off Sakura, pulling the sheets up over them both.
"I know, I know," Endo conceded, reaching out to cup Sakura's cheek with genuine tenderness, his eyes sparkling with mirth. "But hey. A guy can dream, right? Now, how about we actually use that bathroom before we ruin the ryokan's pristine bedding?"
Sakura remained nestled close to Endo, their sides touching, the heat from their bodies radiating under the crisp linen of the futon. The embarrassment over the mess and the joke had subsided, leaving behind a profound, almost dizzying sense of emotional fulfillment.
He felt an urgent, overwhelming need to articulate the depth of what he felt—a rare impulse that broke through his rigid walls of reserve.
He cleared his throat, his voice barely a rasp. "Endo?"
Endo, who was absently tracing a line along Sakura's hip, immediately stopped. "Yeah? You okay?"
Sakura took a shaky breath. His eyes were fixed on a distant point, and while his gaze was steady, the emotion was too much to contain. His eyes flooded instantly, the moisture welling up and shining intensely, threatening to spill, yet Sakura held the deluge back with a white-knuckled grip on his composure. He would not sob; he would not let the tears truly fall.
"I... what we just did," Sakura began, the admission tearing itself free. "I know I don't... I don't usually say things." He swallowed hard, his throat tight. "But that was... different. It was the best it’s ever been. Everything." He briefly closed his eyes, then reopened them, the unshed tears making them brilliant and vulnerable. "The way you waited. And the way you looked at me. It felt..." He finished the sentence on a low, broken breath. "It felt important."
Endo was completely blindsided. Sakura's eyes were glistening, brimming with an intense, fragile emotion he had never seen before—a silent testament to the moment's significance. Endo's easy confidence evaporated instantly. His hand shot out, cupping Sakura's cheek gently, his own heart starting to hammer with panic. He saw the tight line of Sakura's jaw, the desperate refusal to let the tears actually fall, and feared his own carelessness had caused distress.
"Hey! Sakura, what's wrong? Don't look at me like that," Endo stammered, his mind racing, his voice thick with concern. "Did I hurt you? I swear I was careful—did I go too fast at the end? Please, tell me," he pleaded. "We never have to do that again if you don't want to."
Sakura saw the genuine panic in Endo's eyes, the instant self-blame, and a small, watery chuckle escaped him. It was an unexpected reaction—Endo, the fearless one, terrified he had done something wrong. He shook his head gently, letting the unshed tears remain suspended.
"You're such an idiot," Sakura whispered, but the phrase was laced with affection.
To prove his point, and to completely derail Endo's frantic self-recrimination, Sakura’s fingers found their target. He reached across his own chest and expertly pinched one of Endo's nipples between his thumb and forefinger, giving it a sharp, calculated twist.
"Yip!" Endo yelped, a pathetic, high-pitched sound of shock escaping him. He flinched violently, his eyes widening in stunned betrayal at the sudden, precise attack.
Sakura watched the reaction with satisfaction. "What's wrong?" he challenged, his voice raspy from emotion. "Did you lose your brain along with all that stuff? You think I'm crying because I'm sad? You're an idiot."
Endo rubbed the suddenly tender spot, feigning offense, though a delighted grin was quickly replacing his shock. "Wow. That was uncalled for, Cherry Boy! And here I was, being all tender and worried about your fragile emotions." He narrowed his eyes mischievously. "If you keep attacking me like that, I'll take it as a challenge. We can start 'round three' right now, and tomorrow you really won't be able to sit up straight on the bike."
Sakura met the challenge in his eyes, his chin lifted defiantly. The playful threat was a familiar comfort. But after a few moments, the defiance faded, replaced by the deep, lingering melancholy he had tried to ignore all day. His gaze softened, becoming distant.
"Don't," Sakura said quietly, the lightness draining from his voice. He reached up and gently touched the scar on Endo’s knuckle. "Don't make me want to stay here even more."
He met Endo’s eyes again, his voice dropping to a somber whisper. "It's going to be hard to leave tomorrow."
Endo’s expression shifted, the playful mischief fading slightly, replaced by a look of deep, quiet satisfaction over the admission. He knew the longing in Sakura’s voice was genuine; this entire day was a precious anomaly.
He reached his arm over the edge of the futon, stretching to retrieve his jeans tossed near the wall. He fished inside a pocket and pulled out a battered pack of cigarettes and an old lighter.
"I need a smoke after all that," Endo murmured, already shaking a cigarette loose.
Sakura watched the process, his eyes widening in immediate disapproval. "Are you serious? Endo, we’re in a traditional inn. You can't smoke here. The fire alarms, the smell—"
Endo didn't even look up as he flicked the lighter open. "Relax. The window's open a crack, and we're on the third floor. Who's going to know? It's our little secret."
Sakura glared at him, his face a mask of furious indignation. "I'll know! I just told you this place was important to me, and you're going to disrespect it? Don't be an absolute degenerate!"
Endo held the flickering flame near the tobacco for a moment longer, looking at Sakura's genuinely angry face. He let out a long sigh, realizing the other boy wasn't being dramatic; he was serious. With a groan of frustration, Endo snapped the lighter shut and tossed the cigarette back into the pack.
"Fine," he grumbled. "Always the police, aren't you? Happy?"
Sakura simply nodded once, his expression softening slightly. "Yes."
Endo paused, leaning back against the pillow, watching the dim light dance on the wall. He needed something to mark the occasion.
"Okay. No nicotine," Endo conceded, then brightened, leaning closer. "How about a small drink, then? I saw a vending machine down the hall that sells those mini-cans of sake and shōchū. A celebratory toast? To... well, to crossing a very important line." He wiggled his eyebrows suggestively. "To your first time being a very, very confident health risk."
Sakura let out a gasp of embarrassment and immediately brought his fist down on Endo's shoulder. "Stop talking about that! You're disgusting!"
"Just one drink, then?" Endo insisted, rubbing his shoulder but grinning widely.
Sakura hesitated, chewing on his lower lip. The idea of a shared, quiet drink felt like a perfect, adult capstone to the day. He sighed in surrender.
"Fine," Sakura conceded, sinking back into the warmth. "Just one small can."
The small, celebratory drinking session was moved to the narrow, covered porch that ran along the edge of their room, overlooking the ryokan's serene inner garden.
They sat side-by-side on the wooden floor, their feet dangling into the cold night air. The air was crisp and clean, smelling faintly of pine and the cold mineral water of the distant spring.
Sakura, already warmed by the onsen and now sipping the cold, strong sake, felt his face grow pleasantly hot. He leaned back against the sliding paper door, his legs swinging in a gentle, rhythmic forward and back motion, his earlier tension completely melted away.
Endo, holding his own can, was uncharacteristically quiet, content just to sit shoulder-to-shoulder with Sakura, gazing out at the garden dimly illuminated by a few low lanterns. The silence between them was not awkward but companionable, heavy with the shared intimacy of the past hour.
Suddenly, Endo gasped, his body giving a sharp, excited jolt that made him spill a drop of sake on the wood.
"Hey! Did you see that?" Endo hissed, pointing quickly towards the black expanse above the mountain peaks. "A shooting star! I saw it!"
Sakura stopped swinging his legs and looked up, following Endo’s gaze. He hadn't seen the fleeting streak, but he was immediately struck by the sheer clarity of the sky. Far from the light pollution of their home in the city, the darkness here was profound, and the stars were a dizzying, brilliant scatter across the velvet canopy.
Sakura breathed out, genuinely impressed. "You're right. The sky is so much clearer out here than it is back near Makochi. You can actually see things." He shifted closer to Endo, sharing the view.
"Did you make a wish?" Sakura asked, turning his head to look at Endo. "You're supposed to make a wish when you see a shooting star."
Endo turned his head too, his green eyes sparkling in the dim light. He took a slow sip of his sake, a playful yet profound look on his face.
"I did," Endo admitted, his voice low and sincere. He leaned in, bumping his temple gently against Sakura's. "But it was short. I wished for us to be this happy forever."
Sakura felt his breath catch in his throat. It was exactly the kind of incredibly cheesy, openly sentimental thing Endo always said, yet hearing it after the vulnerability they had shared made his heart thump a fierce, rapid rhythm against his ribs.
He looked quickly away, trying to hide the sudden, powerful rush of tenderness. "You're such a sap," he muttered, gripping his sake can tight, the redness in his face deepening. But the profound truth of the wish—and the certainty that Endo meant it—was the most perfect final note to their anniversary.
Endo paused, allowing the warmth of the shared moment and the lingering effect of the sake to settle. He leaned back again, his arm brushing against Sakura's, and decided to push the cheesiness one step further, weaving it back into their familiar raunchy territory.
"And besides just the general happiness," Endo continued, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial murmur, "I also wished that we keep having sex this damn good until we're, like, eighty." He nudged Sakura playfully. "And I hope I can still kiss you even after you get dentures."
The image was so absurdly specific, so vividly gross, that Sakura reacted instantly and dramatically.
"Ugh, Endo! Stop it!" He cried out, recoiling with a genuine shudder of disgust. His hand shot up and slapped firmly over Endo's mouth, cutting off any further geriatric declarations of affection.
"You have to stop thinking about sex and gross old people's things right now!" Sakura hissed, his eyes wide with horrified embarrassment. He kept his palm firmly pressed over Endo’s lips, his face hot enough to steam the glass doors behind them.
Endo, however, saw his opportunity. Instead of speaking, he slowly licked the center of Sakura's palm, his tongue a slow, deliberate swipe against the sensitive skin.
Sakura gasped, his outrage short-circuited by the sudden, unexpected gesture. Before he could snatch his hand away, Endo’s mouth opened slightly, his lips closing around Sakura’s index finger. He gave it a firm, warm suck.
Sakura froze, his eyes wide with shock. The unexpected, aggressive intimacy—delivered right after a conversation about dentures—was almost too much to process.
"Endo! Let go! That is disgusting!" Sakura hissed, yanking his hand away as his face exploded in red. He quickly wiped his wet finger on his athletic pants, a mixture of intense arousal and sheer disgust warring on his face.
Endo laughed, a deep, satisfied sound, utterly pleased by the chaotic reaction. "What? You put your hand on my mouth. I used it," he pointed out, a wicked gleam in his eyes.
Sakura held his hand there for a few more seconds, trying to maintain his mask of outrage. His lips were trembling, and despite the shame, a small, undeniable smile touched the corner of his mouth.
He pulled his hand back quickly, shoving Endo lightly. "Just finish your drink, you pervert."
Endo chuckled, lifted the sake can, and clinked it gently against Sakura’s. "To us, then, Cherry Boy."
The following morning was subdued. The magic of the ryokan and the surrounding mountains felt palpable, making the prospect of returning to the city's noise and chaos a painful chore. They folded their futons and packed their bags with a distinct lack of enthusiasm.
Sakura was trying to maintain rigid control, but his quiet reluctance was obvious. Endo, for once, didn't tease, simply packing his duffel bag and waiting.
They pulled on their jackets and helmets in the cool, crisp mountain air. The roar of the engine—normally a sound of pure freedom—sounded this morning like a heavy, insistent reminder of responsibilities.
Sakura mounted the bike behind Endo, wrapping his arms instinctively around Endo's waist and resting his helmet against the familiar warmth of his back. This time, the embrace was less about balance and more about clinging to the lingering memory of the futon and the shared silence.
They descended the winding mountain roads. The speed was exhilarating, but the landscape slowly shifted from pristine green valleys to sprawling commercial zones. Sakura watched the world blur past, feeling the clean air grow heavy with diesel and humidity.
Endo kept the ride steady, occasionally reaching back to squeeze the hand that was gripping his jacket. It was a silent conversation: We're almost there. Just hold on.
As they hit the main highways, the traffic thickened, the noise level spiked, and the brilliant blue sky was swallowed by the haze above the metropolis. Sakura knew the exact moment they left the sanctuary behind, feeling the weight of the city pressing down on his shoulders. He simply tightened his grip around Endo.
They finally pulled up outside Sakura’s apartment building. The bike idled with a loud, impatient rumble that seemed to announce their return to the neighborhood.
Endo cut the engine. Sakura slowly dismounted, pulling off his helmet and letting his hair fall forward. He felt stiff and worn out.
Endo removed his own helmet, shaking out his dark hair. The familiar, affectionate smirk returned, softening the weary lines around his eyes.
"We made it," Endo said, leaning against the bike. "Back to the grind. You go shower and throw out all the dirty secrets from this weekend."
Sakura looked down at his own hand, then met Endo's gaze. "It was... thank you, Endo," he managed, the words barely a whisper. "It was a good anniversary. The ride was good too."
Endo stepped forward, pulling Sakura close for a lingering kiss. It was deep and possessive, a final reminder of the intimacy they had shared, the scent of leather and gasoline mingling with the lingering onsen soap on their skin.
When he pulled back, he gave Sakura a significant look.
"Don't worry, I’ll book the next one soon," Endo murmured, running a thumb over Sakura’s cheek. "But until then, I've got one more thing to say before you go back into your shell."
He paused dramatically, letting a huge, wicked grin spread across his face, reverting instantly to his old form.
"Just remember," Endo whispered, his voice full of mischief, "if you start feeling any morning sickness or cravings for pickled radishes in the next few weeks, you know who to call. That's what happens when you get 'efficient' with a guy like me."
Sakura stared at him, the melancholy instantly replaced by furious outrage. He snatched his key from his pocket and unlocked the door.
"You are absolutely disgusting! Get out of here!" Sakura spat out, but the corner of his mouth twitched upwards despite his best efforts to look disgusted. He knew Endo was doing it to make the painful goodbye easier.
He shoved his way inside the apartment and slammed the door shut, locking it with a sharp thwack.
Endo chuckled, a satisfied sound, and gave the door a resounding smack with his palm. He mounted his bike, revved the engine once—a loud, final declaration—and rode back out into the city traffic, leaving Sakura to face the reality of the coming week, armed with memories of mountains, vulnerability, and inappropriate jokes.
