Work Text:
Tonight was Halloween night. Noelle had spent weeks preparing her costume. She was going to be going as the Ice Mage Hero from Dragon Blazers. Specifically, she was going as the Mage during the evil route. In game, the Mage’s design doesn't change, but that just meant she could get creative.
She wore a crown of roses on her head, and glued small, clear, and blue plastic gemstones into it until it looked like the roses were sprouting from shattered ice. She also glued extra petals and gems onto the sleeves of the Mage costume she had bought. Dess helped her put on purposefully smudged eyeliner that made her look like she had been crying.
The illusion of the Mage, broken by the angel's will, was shattered by the large grin on her face. She looked so good! She couldn't wait to see Kris and Asriel's costumes; they had both agreed to be the other two heroes.
“Can you FINALLY tell me what you're going to be this year?” she asked Dess.
“Nope, still a surprise,” Dess replied.
“I still say you could have been the dragon! The dragon is just as cool as you are!”
“I think my costumes a lot cooler than the Dragon, could kick the dragon's butt too!”
“GASP COULD NOT.”
“You don't even know who I'm going as.”
There was a knock at the door. Noelle ran to open it on the other side, was Kris and Asriel.
Kris was dressed as the First Hero, the Angel's Vessel. They were wearing all grey and their hair had been dyed black. They had found an old bird cage that they had stuck in their wagon.
“I'm going to grab one of Aunt Carol's heart pillows,” Kris said, pushing past Noelle.
“I'm gonna follow them to make sure they don't take one of Mom's favorites,” Dess said.
“Haha, ok, you do that,” Asriel said. “Sorry about that, they've wanted a “human soul” for their costume, and well… your heart pillows are perfect.”
Asriel was wearing a long, dark, hooded cloak much like the Shadow Prince. The Prince's face was never shown, and neither the Prophecy itself nor the Lord of the Hammer were much help either, so Asriel had full creative liberty when it came to the Prince's face. He chose to wear edgy makeup. Large stripes of black had been dyed into his fur.
“I'll send Kris back down with the pillow, and then I'll catch up with you guys later? It's going to take me a while to get ready,” Dess called back from the stairs
“Ok, Dess, catch up with you then,” Asriel replied.

The trio had been trick or treating for almost two hours. The sun had almost fully set, leaving the sky a deep navy blue that contrasted against the dark silhouettes of trees.
Dess had never shown up much to Noelle's disappointment. She always went trick or treating with Dess.
Something was moving in the trees.
“Agh!! What's that?!” Noelle screamed.
“What? Where!” Asriel said, head whipping around to try to see what Noelle saw.
Then she saw the movement again, a figure blending into the shadows, slowly creeping towards them.
Moonlight reflected off a single patch on the figure's head, creating the appearance of a slitted visor. She recognized that visor.
That was the Knight. Her mind filled in all the details now; she could see the faint edge of sharp metal armor covering the Knight's body. The knight slowly brought their hand up to their mouth,
And Roared.
It was a horrible, distorted sound that rattled through the street.
Noelle screamed and threw her hands in front of her face. Why couldn't she move?
Through the gaps in her fingers, she saw the knight charge at her and hold their hand out in front of themself.
Then Noelle was covered in silly string.
Noelle blinked all at once. The illusion of the Knight was dispelled, and in its place was Dess. The antlers sticking out of her costume gave her away. She was wearing a black morph suit with black painted cardboard armor on top. A single strip of reflective tape had been placed where the Knight's visor would be.
Dess held a microphone up to her mouth, and when she spoke, her voice was distorted.
“You're dead, little hero, go sit down while I deal with the others.”
Noelle giggled and nodded
“Good luck, Dess!
Dess simply nodded
Before Dess left, Noelle turned back and said,
“Also, the dragon would totally beat up the Knight.”
