Work Text:
Your name is Equius Zahhak, and you’ve been made to go to a Mandatory Movie night. This is dreadful, as it means you have to go, lest your Leader decide that you have officially became the local Cryptid of the Blue Team, and have your hive searched as they look for where in the Void you have hidden yourself now. Because God forbid they have two Zahhaks go AWOL.
(Jokes on them, you don’t need to hide in the Void, the Void hides you.)
However, due to you still keeping Kurloz’s location inside your hive a secret, you do not actually want people ransacking your hive for your location, lest they find him and believe that he had culled you, or something. Kurloz wouldn’t do that, but you think that he would say he did, just to get his so-called ‘inevitable death sentence’ out of the way. He’s weird like that.
… Anyway. You were not informed of this movie night being mandatory until the eve before you had to attend, and thus had to go to the supermarket instead of shopping online. Nepeta does say it’s good for you, as it makes you less likely to hide inside your Void. You still don’t like it, though, but that’s just you. You managed to pick up more Soda for Kurloz, at least. You had a feeling that it was running low, and it’s probably for the best that you keep a large quantity in supply. He goes through it… rather quickly, actually. He hasn’t complained about the brand you buy (store brand, it’s store brand), so you figure it must be OK for him. And it’s a bonus for you, since Makara won’t steal them from you. Like he did with your other sodas. (You can tell he isn’t, as the stock is not declining as quickly as they would be if he was stealing them.) Apparently, it seems as though he does not like diet soda. You’ll be honest, you haven’t heard from him in a while, but you figure that he’s okay. You can still sense that he’s around, so he must be fine.
Anyway, back to your current mandatory trip.
You are going to John’s place to watch a movie. You have no idea what movie he has picked on this eve, just that he has a lot of them alongside his… relative (you think?) Jake, and you pray none of the movies that he is showing today have anything to do with human Nicolas Cage.
(You don’t want to be reminded of Vriska’s… thing that she had for the actor. It was kind of disturbing. That, and you also accidentally used her poster as a towel. You don’t want her to remember that.)
With that in mind, you check your ‘dex for your snacks (they are all present), and walk out of your hive towards John’s place. Nepeta said she would meet you there, so you spend the walk in a quiet solitude that you do not mind.
… Ah, you forgot to tell Kurloz where you were going. Ah, well, you’re sure he won’t care too much. He never tells you when Strider is coming over, after all, so you don’t have to tell him where you’re going, either. He’ll probably just do some laundry, or something.
Honestly, Kurloz himself is an enigma. He’s like Makara, but not. Kurloz is, at the very least, tolerable to be around. Sure, he drives you up the wall at times, but he is also helpful. It’s weird. Makara was never helpful, and has never been helpful. He’s also a lot cleaner than Makara. Absurdly so. You appreciated it at first, but the longer he stays in your hive, the more you can tell that this is less of a hobby of his, and more of a need. It’s like… well, for example, you cleaned your kitchen one time, and you thought you did a good job. And yet you could tell that he was not happy with it. When you came back into the kitchen a few hours later, he had re-cleaned it. On the one hand, part of your pan wishes to profusely apologise for making the highblood disappointed, however both he and Nepeta have told you to stop trying to serve highbloods and to serve yourself for once, so you are classing this hand as your previous thinking and will try to work on it. Plus, Kurloz himself did tell you that you shouldn’t have to clean to ‘his standards’, because he already knows that his standards are ‘kind of weird.’ On the other hand, you had just cleaned this damned kitchen! He did NOT need to clean it again JUST because he didn’t trust your cleaning, he is such a DUMB IDIOT!!
…Ahem.
Anyway. You could ask him why he is like that. You know what you would ask now, as the longer he stays with you, the clearer his issues become to you. You’ve realised that he’s hiding a hell of a lot more than his mere tendencies to ensure things are turned off, locked, and cleaned to His Standards, and you know it. However, you also know he will not answer your questions. It’s like he’s allergic to talking about himself if it gets deeper than what he is on the outside. You know it’s a mask, it’s obviously a mask, but unlike Strider, you can’t tell why he does it. Perhaps he has masked for so long that he’s forgotten how to not do it. Perhaps he feels as though he isn’t allowed to unmask. God help his moirail, if that’s the case—wait… does he even have one?
He needs one, if not.
You get so lost in your thoughts that you do not notice your vision going darker than usual until you suddenly cannot see a thing. You then notice the familiar weight on your back.
… Ah. You stop still in your stride and try to stop yourself from smiling, but have a feeling that one slipped through anyway. You suppose you can indulge her in her silly antics, this time.
“Ah, I cannot see. Who dares stifle my vision?” You ask.
“This is a ro-purry! Hand ofur your diamonds!” Your diamond in question roughly asks, in a voice that seems to sound more gruff than usual. (Most likely put on, she does love to do silly voices when she ‘roleplays’.)
You smirk, “I canter hand over my diamonds, as I do not believe I am able to hand you over to yourself.”
Damn, bro. That was smooth. It seems like I’ve taught you well.
Your moirail huffs behind you, “Equius!! How dare you be so suave! Who taught you that?!” She swiftly uncovers your ganderbulbs and gets off your back, positioning herself into your field of view.
That would be me.
“You taught me that, Nepeta.” You respond, ignoring your inner voice.
Oh, you are such a bⅠ⊤₵╫. I can’t even argue. That was way too smooth.
Shush.
She grins in response, giggling, “Hehe, you’re so silly! Are you excited to see the mewvie?”
You hum, “I am unsure. I do not have any context for whatever movie is being shown this eve, as all I was informed of was, and pardon my paraphrasing, for our leader did send the message to me with his extremely vulgar use of the Alternian language, and I refuse to repeat it,” you clear your throat, and continue, “‘You are going to see a movie on Saturday, and it is mandatory for you to attend. It’s at John’s place. You best be there, otherwise I am classing you as MIA and a search party will be put into place. We will search your hive, so don’t you dare not turn up.’” You pause once more, allowing yourself a small smile at her giggles, “Now, I don’t particularly want people searching my hive, so here I stand.” You pause to think for a moment, then ask, “Wait, do you know what movie is being played?”
She nods, “Mhm! Roxy told me that John found a human movie that he hadn’t watched from one of his favourite franchises in Jake’s huge pile of movies! Something called… uh… ‘Ghostblasters’, maybe? Human movie names are weird, I can’t remember.”
“That sounds…” gory, is what you want to say. Perhaps even scary, if the ghosts are realistic enough. “Not very fun,” is what you say instead.
“I hope it’s scary!! Humans have this holiday called Halloween, and it’s only a few weeks away! Oooh, I’m really excited fur it!!”
You smile and listen as she goes on about the human holiday known as ‘Halloween’, nodding on the correct occasions to do so. Of course, she’d love a holiday in which she could dress up as a meowbeast and have that be socially acceptable. If Horuss were here, he too would probably like it — dressing as a hoofbeast, you mean. To you, however, the thought is… not appealing. You can barely handle Team Movie Nights, after all. God forbid you walk around dressed like an idiot in public. Even if everyone else is doing it. People are terrifying.
You pray that the movie isn’t too scary; you’ve seen enough ghost movies for one lifetime.
… Perhaps, sneakily watching scary movies at 4 sweeps old while your Lusus was asleep was not the best idea one could have had, but here we are, and here you are. How were you supposed to know it would have had lasting consequences??
You got to the outside of John Egbert’s hive just in time to witness… a sight.
The other Captor — the one that is a lot more annoying than your Captor, but you forget his name — is riding on… some kind of wheeled plank that he’s jumping on and off of. You and Nepeta watch him jump, and the board flips in the air, and lands on the floor wheels first as he lands on it.
Who the f∪¢₭ does he think he is, Troll Tony Hawk?
“DID YOU SEE THAT TULIP? I LANDED IT!!” He shouts, far louder than necessary.
The Tulip in question laughs and gives him a thumbs up, “Good job Tunez! At this rate you’ll get your epic skillz back in no time flat!!”
“God, I hope so!”
“Radical!” She replies. Motioning to the door, she asks, “Aight, Tunez, I’m gonna head in, wanna come with?”
He shakes his head, “Naw Tulip, I wants-I wanna do a few more tricks first. Sees ya in there!!”
She shrugs, waves him off, and enters John’s hive. The Other Captor (Tunez? Ah, Mituna,) waves back, then does another weird wheeled-plank jump.
Nah, Troll Tony Hawk would never be that noticable. Or annoying, for that matter.
What is he doing?
I’m not Google.
Whatever it is, it’s definitely impolite to do so on someone elses lawnring. He should be more respectful.
And less annoying.
Yes, and less annoying.
“This is inappropriate behoovior—” Ah, you slipped up, and accidentally punned. Well, it’s better than slipping back into hemoist tendencies. Fuck, fuck it, you need to go with it, you can’t trail off mid sentence— “Ah–Of a guest. You should stop it at once.”
He turns to you, as if only just now noticing you. (You wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case. Despite your height, your presence is nothing worth noticing. Your ability to blend into the background is a blessing… and a curse, at times. But mostly a blessing.)
“Uh. What?” He asks you.
You feel Nepeta tugging your arm, but you stand your ground. “You should stop doing…” You gesture at what he’s doing, because you’ve no idea what’s going on. “That, on the front lawnring. You’re a guest. You should behave appropriately.”
He stares at you, with what you can only assume is a perplexed expression, as his helmet is covering most of his face. “Oh good God bro, what are you, a nark? Suck my entire bulge.”
… What.
“E… Excuse you?”
Wow, Equius. Outstanding commentary. Do you have a tissue? I fear I may weep.
Be quiet.
He cackles, so you assume that your own expression must have shifted at his comment, “Hah! Yeah! You heard me! You can gargle my globes why-while ya down there too!!”
What??
“That’s… entirely inappropriate, and incredibly lewd! You should apologise.” You fold your arms. You are in the right, here. He is being incredibly inappropriate. (You… are probably sweating. But you do not think about that.)
“Bluuuuh,” he whines (he WHINES, like he’s rolling his eyes at you, it is so RUDE), “What-cha gonn’ do bint? Whaddaya gonna do about it?”
You have no idea, but you are beginning to get frustrated.
Okay, he’s 100% asking for it. Kick his ₳$$, Equius. Make him pay.
Yes, perhaps you might just do that. You simply cannot tolerate his rudeness, right now. “I—”
“Ohhh,” He interrupts, “You gonna fight me? One v One? No items? Final Destination? C’mon biaatch, c’man get it!!”
You hear your moirail tell you to calm down. Say that the Captor in front of you ‘isn’t worth it’. (She’s right, he isn’t.) But here’s the thing. You are incredibly calm. That’s not the issue here. Sure, you’re annoyed by his presence and wish he were gone, but you’re not… mad. Frustrated, yes, annoyed, absolutely, but not mad.
That’s pretty strange. I don’t think this has ever happened before. My analyses may be faulty in this regard, Equius, but it seems that I’m more mad about this than YOU are. He straight up just cut you off there, man, what the f∪¢₭? Why aren’t you mad, bro?
Shut up.
Just sayin’.
Either way. You are nothing if not a man of ones word, and thus, you will not back down from a reasonable request. Mituna has offered a fight? Well, as a gentleman, you are compelled to accept. “Alright, if you wish for a fight, I can grant you that wish.”
“Equius, no!!!” Your moirail says, before putting her head in her hands. “God damn it…”
“Aw, HELL yeah!” Mituna responds. He seems… rather happy to fight you, which is strange, but you’re finding that perhaps it is him that is strange. Hm. You get yourself into a fighting position while he… looks for something inside his —wait. Wait is that the Encryption Sylladex? Good God, that’s the worst possible modus to ever sylladex. It has nothing on Stack, though. Stack is still the worst.
You’re getting off track.
You are preparing to battle, as soon as he prepares himself for battle —
Except.
That doesn’t happen.
You feel it before you see it coming. A breath of fresh air. The feeling you experience from sitting in front of the electrical cold air whirring device — uh, you mean the fan — blowing on your face during the hotter eves of the dim season.
There is someone else in your vicinity.
“Oh!!! You both made it!!”
“What?” Mituna stops looking through his terrible fetch modus to glance over at the ‘newcomer’. “Oh. Yah, I’ve been on my skateboard.”
Oh, so that’s what that’s called. You’re not going to call it that. No, you are not being petty, shut up.
I didn’t say a word.
“Great!!” John says. You glance over to Nepeta, who instead of helping you, has since lifted her head and is now is scribbling something down on her tablet. You will question her about that later. “Aw, man, I can’t believe it’s taken this long to get all three of us Heirs in the same place!! You’d think it’d be a lot easier, huh? Isn’t it cool that we're all heirs, by the way? I think it is. I’m getting distracted. C’mon! I’ve got the movie all queued up, and almost everyone’s here! We’re gonna watch it soon, let’s go!”
You don’t want to ‘c’mon,’ you want to fight Mituna. You are a Man Of Your Word.
“Dude, I was about to Melee him.” Mituna says instead.
“Nooo!! No melee! Not in my house! Go to someone else’s house to play that!! This is a Melee-Free Zone! No games! Movies only!”
… Play? Melee is a kind of fighting. Is it also a form of play? A game? You are very confused.
“Is our fight… cancelled?” You ask.
Mituna goes to say something, but John interrupts him, saying, “Yep, it’s been postponed until the end of the movie. Now, Come on—!”
Then he grabs your arm, and Mituna’s, and drags you both inside. You didn’t think anyone except Nepeta (…and Kurloz, apparently,) could drag you. You are entirely blaming his ability to do that on the Wind element he has mastered. He sits in the centre of the semi-circle that has formed in front of the television, putting you on one side of him, and Mituna on the other. “I’m going to sit between you both, just in case you guys still wanna battle later and decide to do it during the movie. No fighting is allowed in my house!”
That’s understandable. You nod. Mituna groans, but also nods.
“What the fuck, Egderp,” Strider —but the one you can tolerate, Dave — says from behind you, “Why do you have to sit the tall ass troll in front of me?”
“Dave, you hate Ghostbusters.” Oh, so that’s what the franchise is called.
“Dude, what the fuck? I love Ghostbusters.”
“If you do, it’s because I like Ghostbusters. Or it’s ironically. I know you very well, Dave!”
You are about to say that you are willing to swap places with Dave if need be, however Nepeta, your loving moirail and saving grace, swaps with him instead, allowing her to sit behind you and lean on your shoulder for the entire duration of the movie if need be. Which, she did.
(You suspect that she has ulterior motives, but cannot pinpoint what those are.)
“Let’s go bust some ghosts!” John cheers, before pressing play on the remote. You hear Dave, and you believe Jade, groan at this. You wonder why. Nepeta merely stifles a giggle near your ear.
He did not let either of you move throughout the entire movie. It was terrible. Your Freedom was trapped by the guy who Inherited the stuff. You are Nothing in comparison to that, and when you combine that with the Inheritor of Doom — well, you were doomed from the moment you spoke to him, weren’t you?
It was incredibly awkward, but somehow, it wasn’t… bad. The movie wasn’t scary at all — it was quite funny at times, actually. John has excellent tastes in movies, Con Air notwithstanding. You heard Mituna laughing at parts you also found humorous, so you assume that he liked the movie too.
“That was very entertaining,” you say to John, once it’s over. Everyone is having quiet conversations of their own as they decide whether or not to watch another movie. You continue, “I am surprised by how much I enjoyed it, actually… I believe Nepeta told me that this was a part of a franchise; do you happen to have all the other movies? I would like to view them.”
John looks shocked, but grins nonetheless, “Aw man, have you never seen a Ghostbusters movie before now? Not even the first one?? You haven’t lived!”
You shake your head, and to your surprise, it’s Mituna who gasps at your confession. “Dude, how have you never heard of ‘The Franchise In Which 4 Hatefriends Get Together To Create A Business Hunting Ghosts, And They Get Up To Many Hijinks Et Cetera’? It’s like, a classic, dude. Everybody’s heard of it.”
You avoided movies involving ghosts and other scary things like the damned plague after being petrified from the whole… scary movie thing… which is probably why you didn’t see it. You do not wish to admit this, however, so you say, “I never really watched movies involving ghosts, or anything spooky.”
They both gasp. You think that they bought your explanation.
“Oh my God, we need to fix this A-SAP,” John says, opening his sylladex— Oh, Roxy was right, he really DOES use stack… wait. Wait, that isn’t just stack. Is that… an array queuestack??? WHY???? That’s so STUPID — to eject his phone and open his version of Trollian. Pesterchum? You think it’s Pesterchum. “Ok, lemme add you both into a group chat so we can watch them all together… Uhh, how did Karkat do it again?”
He spends a few moments fiddling with it before Mituna huffs, taking the device off of him and creating the group chat himself. “There. Whaddya wanna name it?”
“How about…” John says, “The Secret Heir Message Board. Haha, it’s like our secret society’s secret text chat!”
That… is so lame.
“I’m okay with that.” You say.
How are you okay with that?
You’re okay with it because you think it’s cute, despite its inherent dorkiness.
Ugh, nerd.
Mituna disagrees, “Nuh-uh, no way. That’s so dorky! It’s not even funny how dorky it is. What, wait, da-do we have a Secret Heir Society now? Doing Secret Heir Things? It’s so stupid, I— pFf…!” He breaks his sentence off into cackles, and you are struggling to not laugh alongside him.
John grins, “Pretty much! If the Knights can have Video Game nights, then I can make a Secret Heir Society. As the Friendleader of my team, I have authority over that.”
He says it with such authority that part of you can’t help but agree with him.
Mituna, also agreeing with him, names the group chat that anyway, and hands the phone back once he adds himself and you to the chat.

You double take at the message, glancing back over at him, before typing out a message of your own.

Ah, they have a point. You stretch, and put your own mobile device in your pocket. “Thank you for hosting, by the way. Do you wish to put on another movie?”
He shrugs, “I’ll ask the others what they think! Are you both thinking about staying longer?”
Mituna shrugs, “I’ll have to see what Tulip thinks,”
You respond in a similar way, “Yes, I need to see whether Nepeta wishes to retire for the eve, or if she would prefer to stay with Roxy.”
“Oh,” his smile falters slightly, but brightens soon enough, “So… I’ll see you both later? We have to set up a time for our Ghostbusters movie nights, after all!”
You both nod, and he rushes off to talk to the rest of his team. “I’ll be honest,” Mituna says, “If anyt-anyONE makes that guy upset, I’d kill everyone in this world, an’ then myself.”
You can’t help but nod in response.
I guess that’s one thing we can all agree on.
“So, how was that?” Your moirail asks you, as you both leave. She had decided that it was time for you both to retire for the evening, which you are thankful for. You had thanked John once again for hosting as you said goodbye, and you both are now walking towards your hives — Nepeta’s first.
“It was rather fun, actually. I have to say, the other Captor is actually quite tolerable when John is around.”
She smirks a very specific smirk.
“Nepeta, no.”
“Nepeta, YES! You’re totally waxing ashen!!”
“Absolutely not!”
She squeals her shipper’s squee, and you sigh a heavy sigh. Of course, that’s why she never helped you. She was shipping you with the other two Heirs.
“Honestly, Nepeta, I can find someone more tolerable to be around when another party is there without ‘waxing ashen’ for them both. To say that I am purely from one interaction is absurd.”
“But you hate Meowtuna!"
“I do not hate him, I simply find his presence unbearable.”
“Buuuut…?”
You sigh. “But he is more bearable when he is in the presence of John. Which means nothing. John could make anyone more bearable. Even Strider.”
She raises her eyebrow at you.
… Liar.
“Okay, perhaps not Strider.”
She looks at you a moment longer, as if searching for something, but by your next blink the look has disappeared entirely. She shrugs, grinning, “Yeah, that’s what I thought.”
She turns back to face the way she’s walking, and you alongside her for a moment or so of silence.
… You are not beating the ‘pitch for him’ allegations.
Shut up, you know.
You’ve already seen the ship on Nepeta’s wall. There is no hope in her removing it, and you have tried asking. She was adamant, and… well, you’ve always found her resoluteness an endearing trait of hers, even if she had to reign it in a little on Alternia.
Plus, you suppose Strider is deserving of your hate, unlike Mituna. You know his crimes, after all, even if you may not remember them with full clarity. When you look at him, you get flashes of memories from person who wasn’t your moirail, but is still very close to you. Someone who was broken, with his trust shattered by Strider. You remember a intelligent being who was afraid of death. You remember someone who never really had his own friends, just people who only ever wanted the ‘Real’ him. And most important of all, you remember that Strider had tried to kill him. Ha, and he thinks he is all that? He thinks that he’s the cool suave Hero? You’ll show him what his mask truly hides; nothing but cowardice and shame. A man who was so scared of what he created, that he had tried to destroy it.
Ha. He should have known better.
… Hmm.
This ship, however…
“I still will not allow you to ship me with those two.” You finally say to her.
She huffs, throwing her arms im the air. “Oh, c’mon, Equius!!”
You both proceed to have a back and forth regarding whether she can or cannot ship you ashen for the rest of the journey until you reach your first destination. She gives you a tacklepounce hug (which you return said hug with the upmost of care), waves you goodbye, and you head towards your own hive.
All in all, you think it’s been a fairly good day. Perhaps you will entertain the thought of watching movies with the other two. It, at the very least, gives you an excuse to not retreat into your own Void, introvertedness be damned.
Speaking of which…
