Work Text:
Janus and Patton laid in bed side by side. They were supposed to be asleep by this point, it had been hours since they went to bed, but they couldn't fall asleep. Even after their ‘argument’, neither of them had had the heart to leave the other.
They weren't sure of what to do now. What were they supposed to do? Their entire relationship crumbled in one evening a few nights ago and they didn't know how to continue.
Even though he knew how complicated things were between them, Patton still stuck to the way things always were. He still hugged and showed his love for Janus whenever he could. He knew what they had wasn't ‘true’ anymore, but he wanted to believe things would go back to normal.
And this night wasn't any different.
Patton hugged Janus from behind, burying his head in his neck. Janus' body was cold, that hadn't changed, but what had changed is that, usually, since Patton's body is warm most of the time, he would transfer some of his warmth to Janus. But now both of them stayed as polar opposites.
Usually, he's the one who's most affected by their arguments, he's a very emotional person, after all, so him being awake this deep into the night isn't so weird. Janus, on the other hand, fell asleep rather easily, no matter how harsh their argument would've been.
After countless nights of sleeping in the same bed, Patton could tell when Janus was asleep or not. So he recognized how he was still wide awake, presumably for the same reason as him.
“Janus?” Asked Patton.
“Yes, Patton?” No sweet nickname, no ‘darling’, ‘honey’ or anything. Just ‘Patton.’
“Why are you still here with me?” Janus could tell from his voice he's been thinking a lot, he sounded absolutely heartbroken. “You have no reason to stay in our house anymore.” Our house. He was still in denial about the whole situation.
“It's clear to me that you need it.” He tried to stay as neutral as possible.
“Do you not need it, too?”
…
“Janus.” He wrapped his arms fully around him.
“You need it more.” Janus managed to say.
“So you admit you do need it?”
Janus let out a heavy sigh.
“Why do you still do this, Janus?” Patton said, getting frustrated. His voice was trembling.
“Because I still love you.”
They were both a mess emotionally. Patton didn't know what to say after Janus’ confession. His heart had been shaken a lot these past days and he desperately needed some rest, but their messy arguments and Janus’ responses to all of it didn't help.
At least he was being honest, that he could tell by his voice tone.
They could deal with this in the morning. At this moment they weren't in the best mental state to be talking, and they both seriously needed to rest.
“Good night, Janus.” He closed his eyes, and hopefully Janus would too, not before pulling Patton's arms closer to himself and thinking about what he'd just said for a couple hours.
