Chapter Text
"Wait." The man at the head of our AA team holds up a hand. His voice is a whisper despite our target high above.
The little town is cover, good cover. Our position is only exposed from one direction and Thomaas has his rifle there. My finger is on the trigger, the sight gives good tone. "So why the fuck are we holding fire?"
"It's a Santagrine helo. They're faster than they look. Wait for it to get close so he doesn't have enough time to react." As the words leave his mouth the other teams take their shot. Two, no three trails rise from the hills.
"And now they get the kill. Nice-"
"Wait, rookie. Wait." I see the green helicopter careen violently, billowing its cape of flares and chaff. The first missile goes for a packet of decoys to burst uselessly. The second can't quite pick, and corrects itself too late, missing by a mile. The third tries to follow correctly but it can't quite pull lead and whiffs, bursting without harm.
"See?" As he whispers, the pilot brings his gunship around and pastes one of the launchpoints with a rocket salvo. Strange. I took a drink from my canteen only a minute ago.
Swallowing, I take my finger off the trigger. "…yeah. How close?"
