The delighted whoop from the bathroom startled Simon enough to drop his mug in the sink. He swore at it, snatching it back up to make sure it wasn't cracked. "Johnny?" He called, frowning down at it, content to find it intact but now puzzled by the noise.
By the time he turned around Johnny had made it out of the bathroom only half-dressed - he'd never bothered to put a shirt on this morning, bloody nudist, and his trousers were still unbuttoned - and nearly tackled him with something in his hand. A strong arm flung over his shoulder and Simon blinked as he was abruptly halfway to holding his husband up off the kitchen floor. "We did it!" Johnny crowed and showed him the little strip in his other hand.
A pregnancy test.
Simon blinked at it, and then at him, still catching up from dropping his tea, a flutter in his belly as the information slowly processed.
Johnny grinned wider watching his expression change. "I'm pregnant," he burst out as if unable to wait for the processing time.
The excitement boiled over and Simon scooped him entirely off the ground into his arms, grinning as Johnny laughed delightedly, both arms going around his neck now. He clutched Johnny's thigh with one hand as the other bracketed around his lower back to give him some support, spinning around the kitchen once before leaning back against the counter and holding his husband tight against his body, heart racing. "Johnny," His own voice sounded shaky when he said his name, looking up at him.
Johnny beamed down at him. "I checked twice," He said quickly. "There's always a chance they could both be wrong, but I've been nauseous for days - I told ye that - and I just noticed I was spotting this morning, that's why I took the tests."
They'd been trying for almost a year now, after four years of planning on it, and Simon couldn't help the tears spilling over as he clutched Johnny tight against him. "We're havin' a baby," He said slowly, as if it would somehow make it all feel more real.
"Yeah, LT." Johnny's tone softened from his intense excitement and he hugged Simon back, wriggling until he could wrap his legs around him too and Simon could bury his face in his shoulder. "We are. Fuck, I'm pregnant." He was practically vibrating even though he wasn't shouting anymore. "I wasn't - I was so scared I couldn't, but I am now, we're havin' a baby!"
Maybe it was sappy and idealistic but Simon had never doubted for a second that Johnny could have a baby. He'd never opted for surgical transition, and his doctors had only cautioned him that his hormone therapy lowered his chances, not eliminated them. Johnny had always had a way of beating the odds.
Even being so ready to try and believing in their future didn't make it any easier to process their plans becoming reality. They were having a baby. They were having a baby. Simon had never even let himself believe he could feel safe and content again but now he and Johnny were so safe and happy they were having a baby -
"I've got to call Bonnie," Johnny said, giddily. "I don't wanna tell anyone else yet, it's still so early, but Bonnie's done this six fucking times, I wanna tell her. Can I?" When he looked down Simon peeked up and Johnny's face cracked into something even softer. "Oh, Simon." He kissed his forehead and hugged him tighter.
Simon's mind was still spinning but he chuckled helplessly. "Yeah. Yeah, Johnny, call your sister. I'm happy, love. I'm so fuckin' happy."
"I know," Johnny kissed him again, this time on the mouth, arms flexing around his neck. "Me too."
It took a bit before Simon was ready to put him down and even when he did, it was just so he could press his hands to Johnny's thick waist and stare down at his belly, imagining how it was going to change in the next few months. Johnny took hold of his wrist and pulled one hand to his belly, pressing his own palm over it, even though it was far, far too early to feel anything. The visual still made Simon's emotions feel too big for his throat and his fingers flexed into the soft skin.
"I'm havin' your baby, Simon." Johnny rumbled, and Simon's tears spilled over again. He couldn't stop smiling even though his cheeks hurt, and he gripped Johnny's waist with the other hand tightly enough to leave a mark. "You're gonna be a dad."
A dad.
He was going to be a dad.
From the beginning, this time, not just a gruff patch on the emotions of some recruit who latched onto him like a duckling - as much as he loved his ghostlings in the 141. This was different. He bit his lip.
"I'm gonna be a dad." He echoed, giddy despite himself, nerves flaring but soothed away by the pressure of Johnny's arms around his neck. "You're gonna be a mum."
"Yeah," Johnny breathed, bouncing on his toes a little, still beaming. "Yeah, I'm gonna be a mum. I'm gonna do this right, be so fuckin' careful, we're gonna make this work." He pressed his hand protectively into his own belly over Simon's, blue eyes sparking with determination. "We're gonna be the best damn parents."
Simon couldn't help laughing at that, tugging him closer for another proper hug. "Yeah," He agreed, affection overwhelming him at his husband's competitive streak in this of all things. "We're gonna be parents."
