Work Text:

I step outside my porch,
As I hold my torch.

The embers spark wide,
Making me chide to the flames inside.

Tonight is a summer night,
Without the winter fright.
The summer torches warmth,
Is reflective to the star of the North.

Blackberries with their thorns scrape the side of roads,
Fresh, plump berries ready to be plucked on the go.

Trees sway in the wind, they speak in their foregin words marked by the whispers of sin.

Tall grass, yellow in the middle,
But hiding inside is something brighter than any star in the sky.

Crickets chirp. The owls hoot.
Maybe, beside the lake water, I can spot a little Newt.
I can't help but wonder, is it hiding from the same thing as me?
Even despite being a little salamander, free at ease,

Crawling with desperation, for what need?

The torch is discarded.
The yellow flickers in the tall grass are regarded.

But as my hind legs take me through the grass,
Passing by and bouncing and skipping, like a deer prancing fast,
I chase after the blinding little spot in the grass.

One, little spot, but among all else,
It's the biggest of them all!

It's brighter than any star, I go far, far, far!
Past all the buildings, the cities, as it bouncing away from me each time I get close.
What am I chasing after, which they efforts need my most?

And endless chase,
I do not rest my case.

I finally catch it, My extremities clatching like a hatchet.
And clutch the little bug in my paws,

There's a subtle quiver in my jaws.

Because when I uncover, Above all else,
There's yellow and gold-tinted glitter,
And all the animals go silent from their chitter.

Glittery gold leaks from my fur,
Peaking through my hands as my stomach churns,

It appears I have captured he firefly to the point of no return.
