Notes:

This is my first every work on this site. I had a few hundred words before my tab reloaded and I lost everything. If anyone does happen to read this and wants to give me writing advice, please do, give me criticism as well. I may add another chapter, who knows. Also, please tell me if I'm tagging right and give me advice.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It was late when Deputy Rook finally finished clearing out the U.S. Auto of John's forces, and he'll admit that he was exhausted. Rook and Sharky were walking through the woods to find where Rook had parked his truck to hide it from the Peggies, and Rook had noticed how quiet Sharky was being, but he puts it off for now because he wanted to get back to his truck without being attacked by any wild animal. He starts to regret hiding his truck in the woods before he finally sees the dark blue wrap hidden by some surrounding bushes, and he almost cried with joy. He clambers up into his truck and leans back in the seat to rest for a few minutes as Sharky gets in the passenger seat. And again, Rook is brought back to his earlier thought, Sharky being so quiet he could hear a stick snap, and as much as he likes the silence, it's uncanny for Sharky to be quiet for this long, so he knows the man is cooking up something ridiculous in his head.

Without a word, Rook finally starts his truck and leans as close to his wheel as he can without restricting his movements as he guides his truck through the foliage and back onto the road. The truck bounces as it hits a few bumps and holes in the dirt road, when he finally speaks up. "You're being too quiet, I don't like it."

Sharky makes a small noise of laughter as he leans his seat back so he's laying down. "John is such a self-absorbed dick, you just KNOW that guy jerks off in front of his mirror and admires his facial expressions."

Rook pressed the brake to the floor, and the truck comes to an abrupt stop. "What. The fuck did you just say to me?" He turns to looks at Sharky, who has the smuggest grin on his face. "What? You can't say that it doesn't sound like something Johnny boy would do!"

The deputy almost has the gall to grab the pistol on his thigh and just shoot himself in the head. He puts his head in his hands and hits his head against the wheel a few times. "I cannot believe you just said that to me. I do not need to be thinking about John right now."

Sharky laughs loudly as he puts his seat back up. "Dep', you gotta listen to me, though! It's something John would do! Another thing, he seems to get hard when you blow something up! Maybe you two just need to bone, and maybe he'll be less cranky!"

Rook can't control himself anymore, he grabs the pistol in his thigh holster, and he points it at Sharky, who immediately shut up. "I need you to shut the fuck up, right now, or I will put a bullet in your brain."

The ride back to Falls End was quiet, Sharky had heeded Rook's warning and kept quiet. As Rook pulls up across the street from the Spread Eagle, Sharky was quick to get out and cross the road to the bar. "Sorry Dep', I didn't mean to twist your balls or nothin'."

Rook groans as he turns off his truck and follows Sharky into the bar. He collapses onto a barstool in front of Mary May as she puts a glass down in front of him. "Hard day, Deputy?" Her voice was a contrast to all the loud things in his ears today. "You can say that again, Sharky is pissing me off."

Mary hums as she leans against the bar. "When doesn't he? What'd he say?"

"He was talking about John, saying that he probably jerks off in front of his mirror to watch his expressions, and that we should bone to see if he's less cranky." Rook drops his head into his arms as Mary laughs a little. "I won't say he's not talking the truth about John jerking off in his mirror, it does sound like something he'd do. But I don't know about the former, I don't think it feels right wanting to do that kind of stuff with a cult Herald, especially John fucking Seed. Just be careful, Dep."

Rook lifts his head a little to mess with the glass sitting in front of him. "I love Sharky, but he really needs to learn what to say when I'm exhausted, I almost put bullet in his head." He sits up and picks the glass up, taking a small sip of the whiskey before setting it back down. "I'll be careful, it's not like I'm going to take Sharky's word for it and go busting into John's house just to fuck him. Plus, I thought fornication was forbidden in the cult."

Mary shrugs as she picks up a dirty glass and starts cleaning it with a nearby wash cloth. "I'm pretty sure it is. Hurk said something about it a few months ago when he tried to join."

Sharky finally walks over and joins the two at the bar. "Look Dep', you can't blame me for thinking about it. John's always sticking his head where it doesn't need, and I just want to shove my shotgun in his mouth." Mary looks at him and gives him a bewildered look. "Boshaw, the Deputy has had a rough day. How about we tone it down with the... comments. Dep, how about you finish this glass and go upstairs to get some sleep, I'll make sure no one bothers you for the rest of the day."

Rook looks up at Mary as if she were Mother Mary herself. "You are a lifesaver, you don't mind if I use the shower?" Mary shakes her head as Rook downs the rest of his drink. "Thank you so much, Mary." He stands up, and hurriedly walks to the stairs. He gets into the guest room, and he's immediately shedding his clothes to get a hot shower in before going to bed. He goes into the bathroom, and he gets distracted by a nasty bruise on his side. He pokes at it a little bit before he shakes his head and steps into the shower. The next ten minutes were a blur to Rook as he cleans himself, rinses off, gets dry, then gets dressed in clean clothes supplied by Mary. He collapses in the bed before he's falling asleep.

When Rook wakes up in the morning, he feels much better than he had last night. He slowly gets up and changes into a new pair of clothes, then he makes his way downstairs. Mary was already up and about, preparing breakfast and coffee. "Morning, Dep'. You look much better." She hands him a mug of coffee before going back to the breakfast. Minutes later, she plates the eggs and bacon she made and hands the plate to Rook, before starting on some more for herself. "Sharky wanted me to tell you how sorry he was for what he said."

Rook devours the eggs on his plate before he takes a few sips of his coffee. "He's fine, I was exhausted. I'll be honest, he does have a good point. It does sound like something John would do." He runs his hand through his hair, tossing it out of his face so he can eat his bacon. "Speaking of Sharky, I have to go find him." "No need, he decided to crash in the house across the street." Mary walks out of the kitchen and sits across from the deputy. "He seemed genuine too, about him being sorry. It's surprising, he thinks highly of you, Rook."

Rook nods as he drinks the rest of his coffee after finishing his bacon. "I know he does, everything just gets on my nerves, and then I get overstimulated with all this shit, and then he runs his mouth about John's dick, and I just want to punch him in the face sometimes." He rubs his face, trying to wake himself up more as the coffee settles in. "Thank you for the food and the guest room, I couldn't be more thankful. I have some pissing off to do." He stands up and makes his way to the door.

When Rook walks outside, he has to shield his eyes from the sun for a few minutes to get used to the brightness. Once he drops his hands, he sees Sharky lounging about in front of the house across the street, smoking a cigarette. Rook makes sure to look both ways before crossing the street and walking up on the porch. "Hey, Sharky. Mary told me you were sorry. I wanted to apologize for freaking out on you. I don't really have an excuse, but all I can say is that I was very overstimulated, and I very much did not want to picture John jerking off in front of a mirror."

Sharky looks up from his cigarette, and he smiles at Rook's apology. "Apology accepted, shorty. Sorry for getting on your nerves, I had to get the thought off my chest. You get me though, right? He totally would do that?" Rook nods in agreement. "Yes, yes. He would do that. Say, speaking of John. How about we go piss him off some more, yeah?" Sharky's face lights up at the thought of getting to blow up more stuff belonging to the cult. "I thought you'd never ask."

Notes:

I made this a lot longer than I thought I would. Again, give me criticism please, give me advice, it's all welcome. Tell me if you guys would want me to write about Rooks next encounter with John
