Chapter Text
Their lives have been slow since they graduated from college a year and a half ago and now are working in their respective careers. They didn’t have much yet, living in a small one bedroom apartment in Garak-Dong that they rented out, barely any savings in their bank accounts. Kim Dokja was working as an editor from home for a publishing company for the past five months since he was hired, while Yoo Joonghyuk worked in a small start-up company and streaming on the side to earn a little more. They were getting there, little by little.
They met each other in their first year of college, though they didn’t get along all that well at first, always bickering which always resulted in disagreements, until much later, something changed and began dating halfway through their second year.
Neither of them had family, his own detested him for his mother’s crime and didn’t want to do anything with him, and Joonghyuk grew up in an orphanage, all alone.
At first, he wasn't sure if he'd ever find someone who he would love and that someone would love him back. It's probably the example he had gotten while growing up, as it was the only thing he has seen.
He was proven wrong when he ended up in a relationship with Joonghyuk. He didn’t live like his parents did, his relationship was wholly different from theirs.
Joonghyuk never laid a hand on him, never yelled or verbally insulted him during their arguments. He was gentle, understanding and loving. Cold on the outside, but absolutely soft on the inside. Joonghyuk would never make all of the chores and responsibilities fall on him, would cook for the two of them and would scold him for forgetting to eat or skipping a meal before immediately cooking something for him.
Dokja thought he was incredibly lucky, especially since Joonghyuk proposed a month ago to him after five years of being together. He was trying his very best to stay optimistic, even with how difficult and full of struggles their life was.
But now, it is difficult to stay optimistic. Currently, he sat on the edge of the bathtub as he stared in silence at the stick in his hold.
Just recently he has been feeling a little off, the smell of specific food would make him sick, or how he would randomly throw up in the middle of the night, making Joonghyuk worried sick and concerned for his wellbeing.
He could hardly keep food down sometimes as well.
And his mood wasn’t any better either…
Well, he just received an answer to what was making him feel so ill.
The stick that he was holding indicated two lines, confirming he was pregnant, beside the few other ones he used that had the same exact answer.
He hunched over, holding his head in his hands as his mind raced. How would he even break the news to Joonghyuk? Would he react well? Did Joonghyuk even want to raise a family with him? Hell, they weren't even married or mated yet. He, himself, wasn't exactly sure if he wanted to have a child, but now…
Dokja shakily exhaled as his eyes began to sting from the oncoming tears. He stared at the ring on his finger, brushing it gently with his thumb as he felt himself become more and more nervous.
Unfortunately for him, he couldn’t continue keeping himself locked in the bathroom for any longer as he heard the front door click open, indicating that Joonghyuk was back home, done with errands. Gathering himself, he slowly got up before throwing away the rest of the sticks into the trash bin, hiding the last one in his cardigan’s pocket. For a moment, he hesitated unlocking the bathroom door, but he knew that the other would begin to wonder where he was. Sighing, he unlocked it and stepped out of the small bathroom.
He quickly spots the man, storing away the groceries he purchased into the fridge and cabinets. Even though they were usually short on money, Joonghyuk always found ways to cook delicious food, always serious when it came to nutritious meals.
“Hey,” he greeted as he walked over to the cramped kitchen.
Joonghyuk turned his head as he heard him, then his face contorted from neutral to concerned.
Whatever he was doing, he put it on hold. “Is something wrong?” Joonghyuk asked.
Was he that obvious? Dokja looked down as he fidgeted with his hands nervously. He knew this would be difficult, but not this difficult.
Joonghyuk walked over to him and placed his hands on top of his, stopping him from fidgeting with them. His touch was always comforting to him, especially whenever he had difficult days. Dokja felt his heart race a little less.
“Did something happen while I was gone?” The man asked him again, a small frown forming on his perfect face.
As if words were stuck in his throat, instead, he reached into his cardigan’s pocket with visibly shaking hands and took out the stick before placing it in Joonghyuk’s palm, who appeared confused. The other stared at him for a little before looking down, trying to figure out what he was given.
Dokja watched Joonghyuk’s face as realization dawned on him as he inhaled sharply. Now thinking about it, he barely has ever seen Joonghyuk react like this, as he mostly wore annoyed or neutral facial expressions, but sometimes his features would soften. But he wasn’t surprised by his reaction, as this was life changing news.
I mean, who wouldn’t be shocked? Dokja thought internally. He just learned that we’re expecting.
“Are you… Really?” Joonghyuk looked up, his eyes wide and jaw slack.
“Yes…” He answered, his voice quiet, holding his hands together tightly as he tried to stop them shaking.
Then unexpectedly, Joonghyuk held his arms out and embraced him tightly, earning a surprised sound from Dokja. Slowly, he wrapped his own arms around Joonghyuk, holding tightly onto the fabric of his sweater as he hid his face into the crevice of Joonghyuk’s neck.
“Dokja,” Joonghyuk murmured, holding him closely. “Do you want this?”
"I'm not sure... But I find myself, wanting it," he answered, a bit hesitant. At first, he was shocked and afraid. Neither of them were in a good financial position or married yet. But just a few moments later after finding out, he found himself hesitant and unhappy at the thought of getting rid of it.
“But I’m also scared,” he added. “What if you don’t want this… I don’t want to burden you and I won’t force you to stay-”
He felt Joonghyuk tighten his hold on him more as tears formed in his eyes again.
“Dokja, I won’t go anywhere,” Joonghyuk interrupted him as he caressed the back of his head, rough large hands carding through his hair. “I’ll stay no matter what your choice is and you won’t go through this alone.”
At the other’s words, flood gates opened. For a while, he held onto Joonghyuk, who silently comforted them in their cramped kitchen. Once his tears had run out and Joonghyuk’s shoulder now with a wet spot from his tears, they moved to their bedroom. The two of them laid in silence, hugging each other close.
“Don’t worry about our financial situation,” Joonghyuk told him.
“How can I not? We already live paycheck to paycheck,” he answered, pressing his face further into Joonghyuk’s chest. They didn’t even graduate that long ago, now in their mid twenties and were working in their respective careers, though they weren’t paying all that well.
“I’ve been offered something better recently that could help us, so don’t worry about it,” Joonghyuk reassured him.
The space heater warmed their bedroom as it was nearing winter, making the weather colder now.
Dokja lifted his head, staring right at Joonghyuk with red rimmed eyes. “What do you mean by that?” He asked. This was the first time he was hearing this.
“Besides working in a start up company, I’ve been doing well with streaming,” Joonghyuk explained.
That he knew, sometimes whenever they had free time, Joonghyuk would sit for multiple hours and stream as he enjoyed playing games, now sometimes earning some money on the side. Same exact money that he was storing away for the engagement ring that now sat on his ring finger.
“I’ve been offered a position in esports,” Joonghyuk revealed, moving his hand to gently brush Dokja’s cheek with his thumb. “So don’t worry about money, I’ll take care of things.”
He sighed as he laid back down, feeling a light kiss on top of his head. All of this was too much in one day. Though he found himself feeling… Happy.
“When did you receive the offer?” He asked him, curious to know.
“Last week,” Joonghyuk answered. “But I only made the decision to accept it yesterday.”
He wasn’t surprised that Joonghyuk thought of it for a while. It wouldn’t be a smart move to suddenly quit his job and make such a rash decision.
“So again, don’t worry.”
“I’ll try…” he sighed once again, feeling bone tired already.
There was so much ahead of them in the future. Sorting out their living situation, doctor’s appointments, figuring out what to do with his job later. Hopefully he could continue working as he found himself liking the company and the pay was better than his previous job’s.
In the end though, he was still relieved that Joonghyuk didn’t push him away and left him. Instead he chose to stay, happy to hear the news. The fear inside subsided once he heard his answer.
He’ll try his very best as well.

Chapter Text
As autumn passed, winter came. The temperature dropped as snow began to fall, requiring people to dress more warmly. Since the day they discovered that they were expecting, they made some changes in their lives. Joonghyuk agreed to work in esports after thoroughly reading through the offered contract by the company, as he didn’t want to take any terrible risks. While Dokja made sure to set up the needed doctor appointments and when he’d go on maternity leave. For the time being they didn’t make any changes to their living arrangements, deciding to leave that for later as their lease wasn’t still over yet.
Currently, they are sitting in a packed subway train, heading towards the clinic where he’s supposed to see the doctor, Joonghyuk joining him, taking the morning off from work to go with him. The man has already put in his two week notice at the start-up company, since he wasn’t all that worried since seeing the large increase in the salary he’ll be receiving once he leaves.
He rubbed his eyes as they felt a little heavy from lack of sleep. In recent days, he hasn’t been sleeping well, making it difficult for him to work or do anything throughout the day like chores or his own hobbies even. It frustrated him a little, but he knew he couldn’t do much about it.
Soon enough, they reached their stop and the both of them stepped out of the train, slowly walking and taking their time to get to the clinic, the weather a little nicer today. The two held each other by hand, keeping close before the sight of the clinic came into view.
Dokja welcomed the warmth as they walked inside, the automatic doors behind them closing with a quiet thud. He quickly took off his scarf and coat before hanging it on the coathanger nearby before he could feel himself overheat. Joonghyuk walked over to the reception desk and had the receptionist instruct where to go and what the number of the doctor’s office was so they could go ahead and wait to be called in.
They sat down on the available chairs in the waiting area. Dokja quickly took a look at the time on his phone, only about ten minutes to wait until the exact time of his appointment.
As he fidgeted with his hands, the other beside him spoke up.
“Are you nervous?” Joonghyuk asked him, placing his hand on top of his.
“A little,” he exhaled. He wasn’t exactly fond of hospitals and clinics due to his past, not a single moment there was a good memory. He lost count how many times he went there in his younger days. He tried not to think of the needles or the metal instruments that would pick and prob at him.
“Don’t worry, I’ll be with you,” Joonghyuk answered.
Alas, he’d need to get used to these appointments as he had many more coming up.
The door in front of them opens as a nurse steps out with a clipboard in hand.
“Kim Dokja?” The nurse called out his name. Standing up, Joonghyuk followed after him.
When the doctor’s appointment was finally finished, the two stepped out of the office with papers in hand and ready to leave. Joonghyuk handed his coat over to him which he quickly put on as he didn’t want to spend any more time here than needed. The doctor was kind and understanding, but it was still uncomfortable in the end.
As he closes the last few buttons, arms encase him with a wool scarf. Joonghyuk quietly secures it around his neck so he’d be warm as Dokja watches him.
“Thanks,” he muttered.
Even though Joonghyuk took the morning off of work today, he still needed to go, which made him feel a little disappointed. Though, due to him switching careers, he’ll be working from home more often soon, allowing them to spend more time together, something that he looked forward to.
“Let’s go home,” Joonghyuk said, ready to go now.
“You go ahead, you’ll be late if we go together,” he told him. “I agreed to meet with Sooyoung already after the appointment, so I won’t head home just yet.”
Joonghyuk sighed as he took his hand, walking out of the clinic. “Just be careful, alright?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
The other only lifted a brow, a little doubtful due to his streak of always running into problems.
“It’s not far anyways, I’ll be fine,” he reassured him, patting the taller’s arm.
“Alright,” Joonghyuk conceded. “But call me if anything happens.”
In the end, Joonghyuk saw him out to the subway platform where the train he needed to take before they separated once he stepped inside. Now he sat alone, alone with his thoughts.
Since they didn’t have any family and barely any friends, they only really had Sooyoung. She’s been with him since his senior year of school, joining the same college and major as him. Due to their similar interests, they grew close quickly, their little circle growing a little once he met and began dating Joonghyuk. Sooyoung kept an eye on him at first until she warmed up a little to him, enjoying testing his patience and bothering him. It was entertaining to watch, even now.
Since she’s a close friend, he thought of how to break the news to her as their lives are about to get even busier. Part of him already knows what her reaction will be, but he’s still nervous. Brushing the folder with his thumb, he looked down at it before choosing to open it. He didn’t properly look through it just yet, only a small glance.
Carefully reading the document given by the doctor, he made sure to read the most important parts. Apparently, he was 7 weeks pregnant, not even that long. Then, he noticed a paper poking out behind the document. Taking a look, it was an ultrasound photo. Dokja could barely make out what he was looking at, but he could guess that it was the fetus.
He felt strange as he stared at it. It really just hit him of what was going on. Again, it wasn’t in the plans to have children, neither of them knew anything about children or how to interact with them. He grew up in an abusive home with terrible examples, while Joonghyuk grew up in an orphanage. They had little to no experience with children. Will they be able to do it? Questions ran in his head until he heard his upcoming stop.
“You’re what?!” Sooyoung exclaimed, her eyes wide and jaw slack from hearing the news.
Dokja grimaced as he felt eyes on them in the small cafe. “Sooyoung, not so loud,” he hissed, hoping that she’ll gather herself quickly. He felt so embarrassed. Maybe he should’ve picked a different spot to meet…
“What do you mean you’re pregnant?” Sooyoung asked. “As in literally?”
“Yes,” he groaned as he held his head in his hands.
“Does he know?” Sooyoung asked again, the grip on the coffee cup tight.
“Of course he does,” he answered, looking up at her with a frown. Why wouldn’t he tell him? Hell, since he told him the man was more happier and calmer than usual, that even the ahjumma that lived next door asked if something good happened for Joonghyuk’s increased mood.
Sooyoung stared at him as she leaned back in her seat, scratching her head.
“What are the both of you planning now then?” Sooyoung questioned, knowing their current living situation. “Both of you are struggling to make ends meet. Neither have the two of you married yet, that was in the plans, right?"
Taking a sip of his tea, he hummed thoughtfully. “Joonghyuk was offered a position in esports with better pay, while I’ll stay working until taking up maternity leave,” he explained to her. "But for marriage... we don't know yet, we aren't in a rush exactly either."
He made it clear to Joonghyuk, that even if their living situation improved, he’ll continue working once his maternity leave finishes. His career wasn’t something he wanted to give up as he enjoyed his job, even if it got exhausting at times sitting hunched over his desk, fixing mistakes that authors made or the hours-long meetings. But there were good sides of his job. He loved reading, it was in his name. He loved meeting with the authors, the not-yet published books and the signing events. He just didn’t want to give it up.
Joonghyuk, of course, was understanding. He knew that reading and stories were important to him from a young age. The other just wanted him rested and healthy, that was all. And marriage? They could wait, but it isn't like they'll throw anything grand anyway, even marrying in a courthouse is enough for them.
“If you say so,” Sooyoung replied, going silent momentarily.
“But if the both of you need help with anything, ask.”
Dokja looked up from his cup, finding her behavior unusual.
“Since when are you so kind?”
“You little-”
When he returned back to their cramped apartment, Joonghyuk was already home. The smell of delicious food permeated their home. From the smell, he guessed that he cooked omurice. His favorite dish.
“I’m back,” he said outloud, hanging his coat and removing his shoes before walking over to the kitchen.
The food was nearly completed once he got a glimpse. When they were tight on money back in college, Joonghyuk, like some magician, always found ways to cook delicious meals. The same went even now.
“The food is almost done, go sit down,” Joonghyuk told him.
“At least let me help out,” he replied, reaching towards the cabinet that had the plates in, taking a few out. He enjoyed moments like these, quiet and domestic. It took a while to get used to once they moved in together, but he loved it. It took a while to learn that this is what a healthy relationship was supposed to look like. Not constant yelling and arguments, plates and bottles smashing against the ground or the dark bruises on skin.
Placing the plates on the small table, he noticed something. When did Joonghyuk make kimchi?
“When did you get the time to make kimchi?” He asked.
“The woman next door brought some when I returned home,” Joonghyuk answered.
Well, this wasn’t a first. The ahjumma next door would often bring them food since they moved in two years ago. She lived alone, her kids moved out long ago and were busy with their loves. Dokja guessed that she was lonely and enjoyed interacting with them. He didn’t mind the food, finding it kind of her to do. The both of them helped her whenever they could. If she needed her medication or something repaired, they’d do it without a second thought.
“Let’s have some on the side then,” he said, walking over to the glass jar, opening it carefully. “Do we have some onion and ketchup left?”
“What for?” Joonghyuk turned to look at him.
“To top the kimchi with it.”
Joonghyuk stared at him for a while before taking the ingredients out of the refrigerator.
What’s with the reaction? He just thought it’d taste well…

Chapter Text
He returned back home in the evening after a long day. He had already finished his last day working in the start-up company and would freshly begin working as an e-sports player after being scouted. The change in careers was much appreciated by Joonghyuk, as it was a pain dealing with office politics and sometimes working overtime without being paid for it. The career switch would also benefit him and Dokja financially wise, especially since discovering that they’re expecting.
Closing the front door behind him, he shrugged off his boots and coat before making his way further inside the apartment. It was strangely quiet, he noticed. Usually the television would be on or the sound of a pen against paper and typing on a laptop could be heard. Except no sound was heard.
Was Dokja not home? He’d usually give a heads up if he’s going somewhere, either a work meeting or to see Sooyoung. Maybe a quick convenience store run?
He has been getting strange and unusual cravings lately, Joonghyuk remembered. From covering kimchi with ketchup and onions, to asking for tomato soup, which Dokja usually detested.
Well, he won’t complain though, he got to explore more with his cooking.
Opening the door to their bedroom and taking a quick glance, he finds the person that he was looking for. There, Dokja laid hunched over the small desk he worked at. His laptop was on that showed documents and papers scattered on the desk.
Walking over to the other, he stared at Dokja for a moment before gently shaking him awake.
“Dokja,” he called.
Dokja let out a small groan as he muttered something. Joonghyuk shook him again until he saw the other open his bleary starry eyes.
“You’re back,” Dokja mumbled as he rubbed his tired eyes.
“If you’re going to sleep, at least do that on the bed,” he said, brushing the inky black hair away from Dokja’s face. He was already struggling when it came to sleep, the evidence clear under his eyes. His morning sickness only worsened recently, waking him randomly at night beside the random food cravings.
“Didn’t even notice that I fell asleep,” Dokja replied, slowly closing the laptop shut.
“Did you eat something while I was gone, at least?” He asked him. Knowing his habits…
Before he began dating Dokja, Joonghyuk knew of his terrible habits when it came to sleeping and eating. The other delayed sleep to read a few more chapters often and lived off of ramyeon.
“I did eat some of the leftovers you left inside the fridge,” Dokja answered, getting up from the chair, his joints cracking in the process from staying in the same position for so long.
At least he’s done that.
Since Dokja’s doctor’s appointment, the doctor was adamant that he kept himself healthy, like eating proper nutritious food and getting proper sleep. That is something Joonghyuk could help easily with.
“How was the meeting with the others?” Dokja asked him.
Today he met with his supposed team members, making him the 5th member as the previous one quit.
“It was… Alright,” he answered, sighing.
Dokja lifted a brow at his answer. “Were they terrible?”
“Not exactly.”
No, they weren’t terrible. Most of them were friendly beside the strict manager, he had no qualms when it came to the team. But the incessant pestering he received the whole time to join them for drinks later at a BBQ restaurant annoyed him. Joonghyuk disliked drinking, especially around strangers. He didn’t tell them that, only making it clear that he had someone waiting for him at home and that he couldn’t join.
“Did the manager say anything?” Dokja continued.
“We start training next week,” he answered as Dokja wrapped his arms around his neck, bringing himself closer to Joonghyuk. He wrapped his own arms around the other’s slim waist in return as Dokja rested his chin on his shoulder, breathing in his scent.
“Hopefully it won’t be too rigorous, I was hoping to spend more time with you from now on,” Dokja declared.
Joonghyuk remembered a few times where he had to work overtime that stretched until midnight, making Dokja worried. They both have worked overtime multiple times in their previous job’s, but it’s not like either of them enjoyed it.
“Don’t worry, half of the training I’ll be completing will be at home,” he reassured him, hugging him close.
The bed creaked as the sound of shuffling on top of the mattress could be heard throughout the cramped apartment. Joonghyuk’s body felt hot as he felt nails raking against his back while the same arms brought him closer. He panted against the crevice of Dokja’s neck while biting the soft skin, leaving small bruises.
Dokja, who was under him, trembled as Joonghyuk gently thrusted inside of him.
As he lifted his head just a slight, their eyes met as their foreheads touched.
Even now, he couldn’t tire of the starry eyes that he stared right at.
He always found Dokja to be beautiful, even if others found him rather average. Something about Dokja’s beauty just pulled him towards the other.
Joonghyuk gently wiped the tear that slid down Dokja’s face with his thumb as the both of them panted. The creaking sound from the bed frame increased upon faster movement until it came to a pause as both of their bodies tensed from pleasure. Neither separated from each other as Joonghyuk held Dokja close to himself while they caught their breaths.
The only time he left the bed was to go and grab a damp towel to clean Dokja and himself before returning back, covering them both with the warm duvet they took out for the colder season, warming the both of them, beside the body heat radiating from them.
The snow outside fell, covering the streets in white as the windows frosted over, a little bit of the cold seeping in inside. The heater that was plugged in continued working for a while, providing warmth inside the dingy apartment.
He ran his fingers through Dokja’s silky hair as the other leaned in from the touch, pressing his face against Joonghyuk’s chest.
Joonghyuk appreciated moments like these, quiet and intimate. Sometimes, their mornings would be chaotic, running all over their home to get ready for work. Dokja tended to sleep in often, having to work from home, but whenever he had to join meetings, he’d wake late less Joonghyuk woke him up. So by the time they were ready to leave, the place was left a mess, leaving them to tidy it up when they’d return back home.
As Joonghyuk looked down, staring at Dokja who now had fallen asleep, he realized that he’ll need to be a little more careful in the near future. Since he was recently revealed to be part of the e-sports team on social media, he garnered quite an audience. While he wasn’t exactly social and found so many eyes on him (the already few thousand that watched him online was a little overwhelming), he knew that Dokja didn’t like having the public eye on him whatsoever.
Considering Dokja’s past and lack of social media accounts, keeping his life private as much as he could, Joonghyuk needed to keep him hidden.
Which would be a little difficult.
He wouldn’t just stop leaving their home together whenever they needed to go out, or stop their small dates they had a few times a month. But to prevent Dokja being seen with him, he’d need to hide his own self in public. His teammates have already warned him up ahead, having to deal with it before already.
The two of them already had plans to go to doctor’s appointments together (much to his insistence that he’d join and be involved), as well as going out to buy clothes for their not-yet born child as well as other necessities that will be needed in the future.
Public transport will be a pain then… Unless. Unless he’d get a license and a car, making it easier for them both. Even once their child is born, it doesn’t mean that doctor appointments and other things will no longer be needed.
Joonghyuk grabbed his phone from the nightstand, careful to not jolt Dokja awake who laid asleep in his hold, writing down in his phone’s notes so he wouldn’t forget.
Maybe it was a good thing that he took up the offer when he was scouted.

Chapter Text
Their days became slower and more quiet. Instead of rushing in the early morning to get ready and make it to the train, they spent time in bed longer and had breakfast in quiet comfort. Joonghyuk still gets out of the bed first, cooking them both breakfast, though now with a different spin due to Dokja’s strange cravings and whatever food he couldn’t consume, less it’d send him straight to throwing it up in their bathroom.
Though, recently, they’ve made a decision even though they weren’t in a rush. The two of them ended up marrying in the courthouse recently, it was pretty quick. They thought that in the end, it’d be good to marry as it would be beneficial. Especially in case of an emergency. They invited Sooyoung as witness since neither of them had anybody else, and they considered Sooyoung a close friend anyway. She cleared her busy schedule to see them tie the knot, before giving Joonghyuk a stern look. While Dokja didn’t understand why, Joonghyuk did.
Joonghyuk knew that she wouldn’t be happy if Dokja was hurt, especially by him, since the two have been close friends before he and Dokja met.
As if he would ever do that. Who did she think he was?
But as of today, they’ve gotten a little busy. Their lease was about to finish, meaning they had to move. The both of them didn’t want to continue living here as they had a child on the way, the space was too small. Now with Joonghyuk’s career switch and Dokja still working, they were able to look for a larger home. So once they’d finish with their work, the two would follow an agent and take a look around at different apartments. They mostly needed a two bedroom apartment as they made a decision that for the time being the child would sleep in their room, while the other would be their office to work in.
Dokja looked around the home, finding himself quite liking this one out of all the others they’ve seen. It was spacious enough, somewhat large windows providing more sunlight inside.
“Not far from here, there’s a large supermarket and a few kindergartens,” the agent explained. “Overall, the neighborhood is quite safe.”
He turned to look at Joonghyuk, who stood in thought. Everything seemed pretty good to him, but he wanted to know Joonghyuk’s opinion.
“What do you think, Joonghyuk-ah?” He asked as he walked over to him.
The man looked out of the window for a moment before nodding in agreement. “Is it still available?”
In the end, they got in the apartment. Joonghyuk offered a little more money for the rent so they’d get the place. It was a little tedious packing up their belongings, even with Sooyoung’s help.
“Ugh, why do the both of you have so much stuff?” Sooyoung groaned as she placed more books inside the cardboard boxes.
Now that she pointed it out, they do have a lot. They accumulated a lot of things within the span of a few years living here. From the books he received while working as an editor or that he bought to Joonghyuk’s growing collection of games.
“Well, most of the miscellaneous stuff is already packed, so there isn’t much left,” he answered, taping the box shut.
Before he could go ahead and take it to carry it over to the front door, Joonghyuk walked over and grabbed it.
“You shouldn’t be lifting anything heavy right now,” Joonghyuk told him before walking away.
Dokja huffed as he crossed his arms. He wasn’t even that far along. Whatever, less work for him.
Since Joonghyuk received his drivers license, he rented out a car so they’d have an easier time to move until he bought his own, needing a little more time to save.
Little by little, more items were packed until they were nearly finished. By now, Sooyoung has already gone home, tired and with a busy schedule that she had as a writer, leaving them both to do the rest. They were still grateful for her help though.
He kneeled on the ground as he pulled out a box under from their shared bed.
When did he place it here? He couldn’t recollect a single memory.
Must’ve been a while, he thought as he opened it up.
Inside the box revealed a few miscellaneous items, one he recognized well. It was a small photo album. Taking it out, he stared at it for a while. It brought back a lot of memories as it was his mother who had taken the photos inside of it. He felt a pang in his chest as he opened it up.
Due to his thoughts being elsewhere and not paying attention, he didn’t notice Joonghyuk walk in.
“What are you looking at?” Joonghyuk asked, startling him out of focus.
Turning his head away from the album he was looking through, he watched Joonghyuk approach him.
“Ah, it’s just a photo album,” he answered simply. Joonghyuk glanced at it, a little curious.
“My mother took these photos back when I was younger,” he added, brushing the rough paper with his thumb gently as he sighed. “I’ve completely forgotten about it.”
Joonghyuk moved to kneel on the ground beside him, taking a small look at the photos that had younger Dokja in them.
“You were small back then,” Joonghyuk commented.
Dokja hummed in response, knowing the reason behind that as he was quite malnourished, turning another page over where a few photos included his mother in them. It was a little strange for him to look at them, as he only ever opened this photo album once and that was multiple years ago. It hurt too much to look at them, and even now it still did, but not as much as before. He hasn’t seen her in a long time as well. Most of his visits were in silence, talking about nothing other than what he was reading and never received a response from her.
As he turned another page, there were no longer any more photos, coming to an end. He knew the reason why there weren’t more, but he didn’t want to think about it.
“We should get a photo album later as well,” he suggested, closing it shut before placing it back inside the box. “Maybe a small camera too.”
Joonghyuk watched him as he took the box and stood up, bringing it over to the other boxes they’d need to take with them.
Silently, the man thought back to the very few photos he had of himself. There were a few with him and other children from the orphanage, but that was all. Neither he or Dokja had many photos from their teenage years, not until they were in college and Sooyoung had taken a few photos of them in secret when they hung out. Joonghyuk noted mentally as he added another thing to the list of things he needed to do.
It’d be nice to look back at photos of their child growing up.
His thoughts were cut short by Dokja.
“Could we have tomato soup for dinner?” Dokja asked him from the other room in the kitchen.
A small smile formed on the corners of his mouth as he stood up. Well, at least he got a way to have Dokja eat that vegetable he detested so much.
“Of course.”

Chapter Text
The two of them settled into their new home quite quickly. It didn't come furnished, so they had to bring or buy some of their own furniture. It was a little nicer having more space, now with an office room allowing them to have more workspace. Joonghyuk was especially content, who appreciated the larger kitchen that he could cook more freely in.
As much as he found tomatoes disgusting and repulsive, his cravings didn't help. He doesn't remember the last time he had eaten anything with tomatoes. At least Joonghyuk’s cooking was delicious, so he tolerated it.
Currently, they made themselves comfortable on their new sofa that was much larger than their older one. Dokja was curled up to Joonghyuk, who was quietly playing a game that could be seen on the television screen, while he himself read a book he recently purchased. As he leaned his head against Joonghyuk’s shoulder, he found himself growing drowsy as his eyes felt heavy, the words on the pages becoming blurry. Soon enough, he found himself asleep.
The book in his grasp slipped, falling onto the ground with a thud, breaking Joonghyuk’s focus on the screen. Joonghyuk turned to Dokja, confused, but his expression softened upon seeing him sleeping peacefully. He turned back to the screen to quit the game before placing the controller on the coffee table.
He didn’t plan on heading to sleep just yet, but when he saw the time on the clock he changed his mind. Getting up from the sofa, he carefully placed his arms around Dokja’s shoulders and legs, lifting him up into his hold. Slowly, Joonghyuk made his way to the bedroom with Dokja in his arms until he reached the bed, placing him down and pulling the covers over Dokja so he wouldn’t be cold.
While the other slept quietly, Joonghyuk joined him in bed once he shut the lights off, hugging him from behind, absentmindedly placing his hand below the curve of the other’s stomach.
It wasn’t rare for him to have repeating dreams like this. He often dreamt of his childhood and that night. The smell of alcohol, blood and the siren lights burned into his memory, unforgettable. It’s not that he thinks of it involuntarily either. Many times he has mulled his head over that night that incident happened, where his mother stabbed his father to death that sent her to prison.
But those dreams were always terrifying and haunting, waking him in the middle of the night many times.
Dokja watched as the blood spread through the blood soaked wooden floor before looking up, staring at his mother who stood silently with a knife in her hold, her full attention on the man that laid dead on the floor. The bruises on his body felt like they were real, aching and pain spreading throughout his body.
Suddenly he felt hands on the soft skin of his face. He stared right back at his mother’s eyes as the blood on her hands stained his face cheeks, making his heart beat at a quicker pace.
“Starting now, we’re going to read everything again,” his mother said, though her voice was muffled.
His eyes immediately opened with him gasping for air as he sat up. Hunched over, he held his head in his hands, trying to breathe as he panted. His back was sweaty, staining his nightshirt while tears gathered in his eyes.
Then he felt arms around his shoulders, bringing him closer to a protective yet comforting hug.
Dokja quickly registered who the person was talking to him.
Joonghyuk.
His hands clenched onto the fabric of his husband’s shirt as he tried to calm, listening to the other speak.
“It’s alright now,” Joonghyuk said, his voice soft and quiet, rubbing his back in slow movement. “I’m here.”
After some time, his breaths slowed down as finally calmed down, the remnants of sleep gone now. Dokja glanced at the digital clock that stood on the nightstand, showing that it was 4 in the morning. Still early.
“Alright now?” Joonghyuk asked him, but he didn’t let him go as he hugged him close.
Dokja leaned into the crevice of Joonghyuk’s neck as he let out a hum.
“It’s that nightmare again?” Joonghyuk asked again.
“As usual,” he answered with a croaky voice as he felt all the energy he had in him drain by little.
The sound of the street was audible, already becoming busy this early, while the snow fell outside as usual, covering the streets and roofs.
That night, it was snowing as well. He remembered the bitter cold and the blanket that was strewn over him by the paramedics who took care of him and his injuries, while he watched his mother get taken by the police.
It wasn’t a pleasant memory and that night haunted him in his sleep as well, never leaving him alone.
Joonghyuk was well aware of his past, so was Sooyoung. He knew of the cruelty he faced at the hands of his father, the reporters that followed him and his tormentors in school. Joonghyuk didn’t push or ask until he spoke up about it himself when feeling comfortable enough.
“Do you need anything?” Joonghyuk broke the silence again.
He thought of his dry throat. “Some water would be nice,” he answered.
Joonghyuk nodded as he let go of him, but not before leaving a small peck on the top of his head as he walked out of the room to where the kitchen was.
Lifting his hand, he rubbed his tired eyes, silently sitting. Looking out the window, he spotted his own reflection before looking away. He probably looked like a mess right now, which he preferred to not see.
Soon enough, Joonghyuk returned with a glass of water, handing it over to him. Dokja quickly downed the glass. When he was done, he placed it on the nightstand before laying back down, placing his head on top of the plush pillow while Joonghyuk joined him back in bed.
Usually, whenever he dreamt of that night or his mother in particular, he found himself always unable to fall back asleep. So whenever that happened, he’d stare at the ceiling until exhaustion took over or it was time to get up. But now, Joonghyuk kept him company during these times, just like tonight.
The other moved to hold him once again, back into the safety of his arms as Dokja leaned right in, breathing in Joonghyuk's scent.
With the warmth of the bed and Joonghyuk’s hold, sleep quickly took over him once again as this time, his dreams were different. This time he saw a child, they felt familiar but he couldn’t see their face and their voice was muffled, but joyful, making his chest feel warm and fuzzy.

Chapter Text
During the past few days, Dokja has begun to notice that something was a little off with Joonghyuk. He’s been a little more annoyed and slower. When the two sat in their shared office, both working, he listened in on what was going on during the man’s stream while scribbling down notes.
Joonghyuk’s desk and camera faced the wall so nobody would see him in passing and if somebody did hear him, most assumed he was just a roommate and Joonghyuk wouldn’t say anything. Dokja paused his work as he glanced at the other, who was glaring at his screen while scolding a student he recently started to mentor named Namwoon and Jihye. He had the chance to meet Joonghyuk’s team not that long ago and met the two teenagers as well, they were all friendly and welcoming, happy to meet him. But those two in particular knew really well how to get under Joonghyuk’s skin, similarly like Sooyoung.
Dokja watched as the grip on Joonghyuk’s mouse tightened, his glare becoming harsher.
He sighed as he got up from his seat, quietly as possible so he wouldn’t disturb his husband, leaving the room to get some of the candies Sooyoung left as he found himself craving them a little often.
While rummaging through the kitchen cabinet in search of the basket that contained the snacks, he didn’t hear Joonghyuk walk out the room, who followed after him. Dokja jolted slightly at the feeling of arms wrapping around his waist as the man buried his face into his shoulder, breathing in his scent.
Pausing what he was doing, he looked back. But just as he was about to say something, he noticed that something was off with Joonghyuk.
Lifting his hand, he placed it on Joonghyuk’s forehead. No wonder why he was feeling such heat coming off of him, the man was running a fever the whole time. It seemed it spiked just today.
“Joonghyuk-ah, maybe you should rest for the rest of the day,” he suggested, showing concern.
The man only buried his face further into his shoulder, staying still. Dokja exhaled as he turned around, still in the taller’s embrace.
“It won’t hurt to take a break for a few days,” he said.
“Weren’t we supposed to go look for a crib,” Joonghyuk said.
“Right now that doesn’t matter, we can go another day,” he sighed. “And I’d prefer to go with you, when you’re well and not look like you’re about to keel over.”
It was silent for a moment before Joonghyuk finally said a word.
“Fine,” Joonghyuk answered.
In the end, he managed to get him to comply and turn his stream off, making sure to inform his manager first of his condition who also told him to rest for the next few days. He guided Joonghyuk soon after to their shared bed, quickly grabbing the thermometer to check his temperature.
After a minute, the thermometer showed 39 celsius. Dokja pinched his temple and went ahead to drop a message to Sooyoung if she could purchase some medicine for Joonghyuk, who only sent a thumbs up in response. With that taken care of, he went ahead and tucked Joonghyuk in and walked back over to the kitchen to prepare some broth.
He’s going to have to eat other people's cooking besides his, he’s not about to let a sick man work around the house.
About an hour and a half later, the sound of the doorbell went off, indicating that Sooyoung arrived. By now, he already cooked and brought over a bowl of broth to Joonghyuk, who ate it without a word. Opening the door, he was greeted by Sooyoung, who had her hands tucked into her jacket’s pocket as she sniffed from a runny nose, snowflakes covering the top of her hat and shoulders.
“Come in,” he ushered her inside.
Sooyoung swiftly removed her boots by the door and handed over the bag that had the medicine he needed. “Here,” she held out the bag.
“How did he even get sick? Doesn’t he mostly stay inside with you,” Sooyoung asked, shrugging off her jacket and hanging it beside theirs.
“Not a clue,” he answered, walking back and placing the bag on the kitchen counter. “Thanks for the medicine though.”
“Oh? You cooked?” Sooyoung took quick notice of the pot on the stove.
He let out a noncommittal hum as he took out some pills from the box. “You can have some if you want.”
“Free food? Count me in then,” Sooyoung said, opening the upper cabinets that held the bowls to serve some for herself.
Dokja walked back to where Joonghyuk was, now laying back down since finishing the bowl of broth.
“Joonghyuk-ah, Sooyoung brought some medicine,” he said, placing down a cup of water and a few pills. “You should take them before sleeping.”
The man opened his bleary eyes before sitting upright with a small grunt, quickly downing the medicine in one large gulp as he fell back once he was done.
Dokja wasn’t surprised by the lack of response from him, that’s how it usually was whenever Joonghyuk was sick, even more untalkative than usual.
Now that that was done, he carefully stood back up and took back the now empty glass and returned to Sooyoung, staring at her, the writer eating with quick speed like she was starving. While tidying up the kitchen, he heard Sooyoung speak up.
“Oh, by the way,” Sooyoung said, her tone a little quiet and awkward as she put the spoon back into the bowl with a clank.
“Hm?” He turned around, confused why she’s so awkward and stiff. “Is something’s up?”
Sooyoung scratched her cheek as her ears reddened. “If you don’t mind freeing your schedule up,” she began. “I’d like you both to meet someone I’ve been seeing.”
His eyes widened at her words. “You’ve been seeing someone?”
Sooyoung glanced between him and the window. “For the past month,” she answered shortly.
The reason why he was surprised was because she didn’t leave her home often unless she wanted to bother the two of them or hang out, sometimes for work related reasons. Otherwise, she spent time at home writing away story after story.
“Her name’s Yoo Sangah,” Sooyoung told him. “I’ve already mentioned you both to her before.”
He moved to take the now empty bowl and placed it in the sink to clean it later. “Sure, why not.”
If Sooyoung wanted to introduce them to the woman she’s been seeing, why not. All three of them were pretty much parentless and had no other relatives. And he just wanted the best for her.
“Well, I’m quite free myself and just need Joonghyuk to get better. When would you like to set up the date to meet?”
When Joonghyuk was finally no longer ill and their schedules cleared, they agreed to meet on a weekend, since they didn’t work during those days. They agreed to meet at a simple small cafe where it wasn’t crowded with people. Joonghyuk wore his mask as usual so people wouldn’t recognize him while outside, especially while he’s out with Dokja to keep him safe as well.
Walking inside, they were greeted with the smell of coffee and the warmth coming from the heater. Dokja quickly located where Sooyoung was, sitting in the far corner of the establishment.
“Hey,” he greeted her while Joonghyuk went to grab snacks and drinks for them both.
“You’re early,” Sooyoung said as she took a quick glance at the person beside her.
Dokja followed her eyes and was greeted by a beautiful woman who stood in front of him.
“You must be Dokja-ssi,” the woman named Sangah said, smiling politely. “And you must be Joonghyuk-ssi.”
“That would be us,” he answered, now with Joonghyuk who returned to his side, holding the beverages in his hold.
“Sooyoung spoke about the two of you a lot,” Sangah told them.
“Oh, she did?” He smiled. “Hopefully good things.”
Sooyoung, who was still sitting, instantly became flustered.
Sangah let out a small breathy laugh in response. Joonghyuk moved the chair for him to sit down once he placed the cups on the table. It was a little more difficult to move around lately now, even tying or removing his shoes has become harder and he needed Joonghyuk’s help often, who did it without being asked most of the time.
The time passed quite quickly without notice as they conversed. After being introduced to Sangah, he found himself enjoying her company and character. He could see why Sooyoung liked Sangah, thinking they were a good match for each other. Turns out, she also shared an interest in reading, which peaked his interest immediately upon mention.
So when they needed to return home, he approached Sooyoung.
“Are you going to say something cheesy?” Sooyoung looked at him with a deadpan look.
He smiled as he spoke. “As long as she makes you happy,” he told her.
Sooyoung rolled her eyes but refrained herself from hitting him with her elbow as she always used to, especially knowing that Joonghyuk would have her head if she did.
Dokja felt tired as they finally stepped foot inside their home, his feet and back aching, welcoming the familiar warmth and scent that covered their apartment. He enjoyed hanging out with Sooyoung and meeting Sangah today, but damn he could definitely sleep for the next 20 hours.
Taking his coat off and handing it over to Joonghyuk so he could hang it, he sat down on the bench, ready to take his shoes off. Before he could, Joonghyuk crouched down by him, removing his shoes from him so he wouldn’t need to bend down and struggle.
“Today was nice,” he commented. “I quite liked Sangah.”
Joonghyuk hummed in response as he listened, placing Dokja’s shoes nearby before standing back up, holding a hand out for the other to help him stand up. Taking Joonghyuk’s large yet gentle hand, he slowly stood up.
“It’s good that Sooyoung will have someone to look after her,” he continued.
“Maybe she won’t come over and devour our entire fridge anymore,” Joonghyuk answered, though the corner of his mouth twitched into a smile.
Dokja let out a snort at his reply.

Chapter Text
As winter was slowly coming to an end, he was also nearing his due date. Though it would still be a little while until they would welcome their daughter into the world. Yes, turns out they were having a daughter. At first, they thought of waiting until their child was born, but decided to find out the gender in the end at the next doctor appointment.
The two of them walked hand in hand to the parking lot where Joonghyuk’s car was parked, which was purchased just recently after saving for a little while from his earnings since switching careers. He felt giddy since leaving the doctor’s office, hearing the news.
Joonghyuk opened the car door to the passenger side for him before closing it once he sat down, joining him on the other side soon. Dokja felt relieved once he sat down, his back aching. He couldn't wait to return to bed and rest. That's all he has been doing recently since going on maternity leave. Most of the time he was either resting, going to doctor appointments or reading. Not like he could do much else as he was restricted from anything heavy duty.
The plan for today was to look around and purchase things they'd need for their daughter.
Joonghyuk slowly drove out of the parking lot, heading towards where the mall was. He has already made a list with Joonghyuk on what they needed. For the time being they'll look for a crib, clothes and other few miscellaneous items. The rest could be bought later anyway.
“Which store should we head to first?” Joonghyuk asked him.
“Let's look for a crib first, best to get the largest thing out of the way,” he answered, taking out a small paper note where he had written everything down on.
Joonghyuk nodded, taking out a mask out of the small compartment as he drove with focus.
Soon enough, they reached the mall. Thankfully the parking lot and mall itself wasn't packed with people. Joonghyuk quickly put on a mask to hide his face before the two of them stepped out of the car.
Hopefully they can find everything they need today as he already felt a little tired and his back wasn't helping either. Making their way inside the mall, they looked around, locating the store they needed.
Dokja stared at the many choices in front of him at the store front.
“How are we supposed to choose…” he muttered.
“We got time,” Joonghyuk answered, still holding onto his hand.
Walking inside the store, he passed by different available choices in cribs. They needed a well made crib, that is all. But his head was already spinning. For a moment, he thought back to his mother, how she prepared for his birth. He shook his head, thinking it's not a good idea to think about his mother, especially when he has been in a good mood since morning.
He stopped walking when Joonghyuk paused in his steps, placing a hand on a crib, assessing its structure and quality.
Well, someone was taking this seriously.
For a while, they browsed around the store, stopping to take a look at whatever caught their eye until they finally settled on a crib they were happy with. But the moment they reached the register, ready to pay, Dokja took out his wallet only for Joonghyuk to beat him to it, swiping his card swiftly. Dokja’s eyebrow twitched. He could’ve paid for it himself.
“I said I’d take care of it,” Joonghyuk turned to him, placing his wallet back into his back pocket.
“I know… But I can pay for stuff myself as well,” he answered, watching Joonghyuk grab the box and lift it up to carry it back to the car.
“And I don’t mind, because I want to.”
Dokja sighed as he followed after him.
In the end, they managed to purchase everything they needed off the list. The moment he stepped foot inside the house, he felt like collapsing straight into bed. But of course, they had to unpack first before he could rest. While Joonghyuk insisted he could do it, he didn’t want to leave everything for the man to do. He felt a little bad leaving everything to Joonghyuk, even though he knew he couldn’t do things at times.
Opening the nearby drawer of their closet, he began to take out the clothes they bought for their child. Dokja stared at the clothes in his hold as he zoned out, brushing his thumb against the soft material. For a moment, he thought how his daughter would feel in his arms, making his chest warm at the thought.
To be honest, he never thought he’d become a parent. He always thought that having Joonghyuk by his side was more than enough and he felt content. Neither did he know how to raise children or interact with them. For a long time, Dokja thought he’d be a terrible parent due to his own set of problems and lack of experience. He still thinks like that even today. He just cannot help it.
Carefully folding the small set of clothes, he placed it snuggly into the drawer before moving onto the next set of clothes. Tiny socks, hats and gloves, so small compared to his hands. Probably even smaller in Joonghyuk’s.
He exhaled as he finished, folding the empty bag for later use. With that done, he moved to sit down on the bed, the mattress bouncing a slight from the additional weight. Dokja sighed as he felt his back and legs ache, sitting in silence as he listened to the shuffling outside the room.
Slowly, he laid down backwards onto the bed, staring at the white ceiling above him as he absentmindedly placed his hand on the curve of his stomach, feeling slight movements.
He was a little afraid when the time will come, but at the same time excited. And he wasn’t alone either, he saw how Joonghyuk would busy himself, saying he’s preparing.
His moment of silence is broken when Joonghyuk enters their bedroom.
“Tired?” Joonghyuk asks, pushing in the box that contained the crib inside of it.
“Yeah,” he answered simply, continuing to lay on top of the bed.
Joonghyuk walked over to where he was, laying down to join him. Dokja slowly turned to the side the other was, pressing his face against his chest as he felt arms encase around him. For a long time, he thought he was making terrible decisions in life, but now thinking about it, maybe they weren’t bad as it led him here. And surprisingly, Dokja found himself feeling happy. A day he never really thought would ever come.
Dokja finished cleaning the last dirty dishes that were left upon insistence, since Joonghyuk cooked anyway and he could still handle a few chores without issue, especially after resting. He rinsed off the last dish and placed it back where the rest of the plates were before drying his hands with the kitchen towel.
He couldn’t wait for the day he gave birth and he wouldn’t have to eat any more tomatoes. He was done and over with them already for the past few months, but he couldn’t help it.
With that done now, he decided to check up on Joonghyuk, who was occupying himself in their bedroom after they finished eating dinner. The man didn’t waste a minute and went ahead to build the crib. Stepping inside the room, he watched Joonghyuk build the last few pieces of the crib with focus on the instruction manual.
“Well aren’t you quick,” he commented, walking over to the man.
“It isn’t that difficult,” Joonghyuk responded, screwing the last piece in and making sure it doesn’t move out of place.
Dokja glanced at the mat that was placed nearby, grabbing it to place it inside the crib where their child would sleep in. The crib wouldn’t be far from their bed so the both of them would have easy access to it. As he stood staring at it, arms wrapped around his waist, just below the curve of his stomach as Joonghyuk nuzzled into his shoulder.
Turning his head slightly to take a look at the man, he admired him for a second. He still was a little unused to Joonghyuk wearing a mask, but understood why. What? He just enjoyed admiring his husband’s face? What’s so bad about that?
“Is there anything else left?” Joonghyuk asked.
“No, this is all for now,” he answered, leaning into the other’s embrace.
The two stood together in comfortable silence, finding themselves not wanting to separate.
There wasn’t much left until they would welcome their daughter, all they had to do is wait now.
That he could wait for patiently.

Chapter Text
It is late in the night when Dokja suddenly wakes. It’s not rare for him to wake in the middle of the night, mostly needing the bathroom or just cravings, but this time it was different. Confused, he rubs his tired eyes as he looks up at where the digital clock is, showing that it is currently 1 in the morning, meaning they’ve been only sleeping for a few hours. He slowly sits up a little, wondering why he woke up if he didn’t want to do either of the things he usually did, that is until he sensed something beneath him. Reaching out to switch on the nightstand lamp and then lifting the duvet, he notices the damp sheets beneath him.
Confused even further, he touches it where it tracks down his thighs which makes his heart drop. Now alert and awake, he turns to shake Joonghyuk to wake him up from sleep.
Joonghyuk’s face scrunches as he lets out a groan, slowly waking from the frantic shaking.
“What’s wrong?” Joonghyuk asks, his voice deep from sleep.
“Joonghyuk-ah, it’s time,” he tells him as his voice shakes, still holding onto the other.
The man’s eyes shoot wide open upon hearing his words, making him sit up straight immediately. Before he can say a word, Joonghyuk bolts right out of bed while Dokja stays still in bed. While he knew the day would come, out of shock he lost any idea of what to do next. Soon enough, Joonghyuk came right back in, bag in hand that had everything they needed and car keys in hand. But the man doesn’t stop right there, grabbing a change of clothes for Dokja and a blanket is draped over him once he’s changed out into something clean.
With some help, Dokja is out of bed and now guided straight into the car.
Joonghyuk drove fast, but still carefully to reach the nearest hospital, his palms sweaty as Dokja began to show some signs of pain.
It didn’t take long to reach the hospital. Quickly parking the car and helping Dokja out, they made it inside and were immediately taken in by the medical personnel. Most of it was a blur, but Joonghyuk stayed by his side the whole time, helping him adjust and change into the provided gown for patients.
Dokja was thankful to have him by his side, because hospitals never brought back any happy memories for him. Cold and lonely, that’s what it was.
He laid in bed, the IV hooked up to him and now given medication to relieve some pain while Joonghyuk sat on a chair near the hospital bed. The other had already managed to contact his manager, informing that he’d need to go on break for the next few weeks, being forward. Thankfully, the man understood his circumstances and approved it. Joonghyuk had already made it clear in advance that he wouldn’t be able to work and would need to help Dokja.
It was miserable, laying in bed for the next few hours until he was encouraged to walk a little. He was a little reluctant to agree with it, but still went with it. He leaned on Joonghyuk for support as the two walked slowly through the hospital corridors, hooking his arm onto his husband’s.
It’s already been hours and the pain made him feel even more miserable until he laid back down. And it wasn’t until another few hours that he finally had to deliver.
Now that was nothing but a blur and full pain. Dokja didn’t remember raising his voice this much before, to the point his voice was hoarse as sweat beaded his forehead, holding onto Joonghyuk’s hand, which he thought he might break by that point due to his strong grip. But Joonghyuk never said a thing, only sending comforting and encouraging words.
Relief only came so soon, leaving him exhausted, in pain and panting.
“It’s over now,” Joonghyuk said as he brushed Dokja’s sweaty bangs away gently, making him lean into the touch.
Their attention was soon moved to the piercing cry across the room, making them both look towards where it came from. Dokja felt more tears form in his eyes as one of the nurses came over to him, handing him their daughter who was wrapped in a soft blanket.
Dokja carefully took her into his arms, his eyes softening upon seeing her as he held her. Moving his hand, he gently brushes his thumb against her soft skin, ignoring the exhaustion and pain as he admires her.
“Biyoo,” he names her, his tone soft and gentle. “Yoo Biyoo.”
The name sounds perfect on his tongue.
“A star,” Joonghyuk speaks up, mentioning the meaning behind the name of their daughter, making Dokja look back at him.
Instead of a neutral face everyone saw on Joonghyuk, he sported a soft smile as he looked at them both.
After hours spent in labor, Dokja rested in the hospital bed, deep asleep on top of Joonghyuk’s chest while the man held onto Biyoo, who was also peacefully asleep.
Joonghyuk silently laid, not even moving an inch to make sure he didn't wake either of them. Overnight, their lives changed and he found himself feeling content.
Over the months he spent preparing, taking care of Dokja and reading whatever book he could find on how to take care of children, he felt like they’d be alright. He knew from the forums he has read, that there would be struggle, but he’ll try his best for them both.
His thoughts are broken by a quiet knock on the door, making him look towards it. The door slid open, revealing two familiar women. Sooyoung and Sangah. Seems like they knew of the news, possibly delivered by Dokja hours ago.
Slowly, he got up, pulling the blanket over Dokja and left the hospital room to greet the two women.
“We heard the news,” Sangah said, smiling brightly while holding a bouquet of flowers.
“Hm, he’s asleep now though,” he told them, still holding onto Biyoo.
Then, the two of the women’s eyes set on the baby in his arms.
“Is that her?” Sooyoung asked. “Didn’t think she’d be this… small.”
Sangah let out a breathy laugh. “How’s Dokja holding up though? Must’ve been tough on him,” Sangah asked him.
Joonghyuk glanced back at the hospital bed where Dokja continued to lay deep asleep.
“He’s recovering, everything went fine without complications,” he answered, though the relief was obvious in his voice. He won’t admit it, but he had his worries throughout the months.
“That’s good.”
“Do any of you need anything?” Sooyoung asked, this time not teasing and just wanting to be helpful during this time.
“For now, no,” he told her, shaking his head.
“Well, if any of you need anything, do ask,” Sangah expressed, quietly walking over to a nearby table and placing the flowers inside an available vase before turning around and walking back, grabbing onto Sooyoung’s arm and beginning to drag her away. “Well then, we’ll be taking our leave for now and let Dokja rest.”
Joonghyuk only nodded in response as he watched them both leave until their figures disappeared into an elevator. He sighed as he turned around and stepped back inside the hospital room, returning to Dokja’s side with Biyoo.

Chapter Text
Adjusting to their new lives was a little difficult. Little was an understatement. Many sleepless nights and barely leaving home, their baby always waking them and in need of them. They would often take turns to care for Biyoo so they could get some proper sleep. And since they couldn’t go out often, Sooyoung and Sangah would come over if they needed anything, happy to help them.
The walls of their home were already starting to fill with frames that held photographs of them and their child, along with the photo books. The apartment became a mess, no matter how much they tried to tidy up, items strewn all over.
Currently, in the early morning, Joonghyuk stood by the stove, cooking lunch for them while holding onto Biyoo. He told Dokja to rest and that he’d take care of her, promising to wake him up later, since it was another sleepless night due to how restless their daughter was.
Joonghyuk looked down momentarily when he heard a small sound come from the infant. She was growing steadily already, the tuft of wavy hair that was like his, while sharing the same eyes as Dokja, round and similar to the starry sky. A small smile formed on the corners of his mouth as he finished cooking, turning off the heat before moving to take out the plates.
But before he could turn around, he felt arms enveloping him. Turning his head to look down, he saw Dokja with a messy bedhead and closed eyes, barely awake from sleep.
“I told you that I’d wake you,” he told Dokja.
“Mn… The food smelled good,” Dokja mumbled, his arms still around him.
Joonghyuk softly exhaled, wrapping his only other available around Dokja’s back, bringing him closer. Dokja only leaned in as he moved his hand to caress the top of Biyoo’s small head, his eyes softening when he spotted her.
Soon enough, the two sat down to eat while Biyoo fell asleep, allowing them to place her back into her crib so she could sleep without being disturbed.
“Aren’t you supposed to return to work soon?” Dokja brought it up.
Right, the few weeks that he was on break were about to end and he’d need to return. Thankfully, his teammates already filled him in on what he missed, but of course not without congratulations.
“Tomorrow,” he answered as the fork he had been holding scraped against the ceramic plate.
“Jihye and Namwoon probably missed having their dear teacher…” Dokja mused, stuffing his mouth with another mouthful of food.
Joonghyuk sighed when he thought about them. He won’t admit it, but he has grown a little fond of them, no matter how much the two teenagers got on his nerves due to how much they bickered and bothered him.
“Will you be fine on your own though? I’ll need to be at the company building for the entire week,” he asked, a little worried. Even with the both of them, they still struggled a little, so he didn’t want to leave Dokja taking care of Biyoo all by himself while he was still recovering from giving birth.
“I should be,” Dokja replied. “You’ll return some hours later anyways.”
“But still…”
“I’ll be fine,” Dokja reassured him. “I might even go outside for a little, I’m a little tired of being cooped up inside while the weather is great outside.”
Joonghyuk only hummed in response. Dokja wasn’t wrong either, he won’t be gone for that long during the day as this wasn’t like his previous job where he worked 8 to 5, sometimes with overtime.
“Just make sure to call me if anything happens.”
When the next day comes, Dokja is left to his own devices once Joonghyuk leaves their home. Once he is done bidding his husband goodbye, he stretches his arms upwards as he hears his spine crack along with other joints. He’ll be on maternity leave himself for the next entire year, so he’ll need to get used to this.
Dokja walks back to the bedroom, making his way to the closet to change into something more presentable than lounge clothes that were already worn and dirty from baby spit. Opting for simple slacks and a simple shirt due to the warm weather outside, he walks over to the crib, where Biyoo was now soundly awake.
“Biyoo-yah,” he called out as he moved to take her into his arms.
“Some fresh air would do,” he muttered, turning to where the stroller was. They hadn’t exactly had the chance to use it just yet, so he thought it’d be a good idea to do that today as the weather was great outside for a walk. He needed to do some light shopping to stock up on a few things either way.
He quickly got everything ready and put his shoes on, heading right out.
It is quite nice to do this again without having to rely on someone, he thought.
Now outside with the sun shining down on them, he made his way towards the riverside. The neighborhood they lived in was quiet and safe, the nearby river was a nice addition too. Dokja made a quick mental list of what he needed to purchase as he got closer to the supermarket. Usually, whenever they needed to shop for things, Joonghyuk was the one that would be the groceries as he was the one that always cooked, not trusting anyone with the kitchen, even Dokja.
He made his way through other customers once he was inside the supermarket, browsing through the aisles. At times, Dokja made sure to check on Biyoo in case something was wrong, but she usually remained calm, either asleep or staring right at him. He smiled at her as he kept walking, grabbing whatever he needed.
Diapers, napkins, bodywash, bread… he checked off his mental list until he reached the meat aisle. Pausing, he stared at the meat.
It’s been a while since we both had murim dumplings, he thought back to the last time they’ve eaten them. It’s been a month and it was both of their favorite meals they had occasionally. He especially craved them as well during pregnancy and never got tired of them.
Quickly grabbing the ingredients needed, he placed it next to his shopping before making way to check out.
It didn’t take long until he felt a bit tired, making need to sit down. He knew he was still recovering, but damn. Dokja sat down on a free bench in front of the river, watching the view. Biyoo was asleep now, allowing him to have a moment of peace.
Honestly, himself from a year ago wouldn’t have believed that his life was like this now. Somehow, just a recent publishing company hire who graduated half a year ago, now married with a child, waiting to return to work while keeping himself still occupied with Sooyoung’s stories.
His younger self would probably have whiplash.
Dokja sighed as he observed the two young kids not far from him, a boy with brown hair holding onto a box that contained bugs while the other, a girl with blonde short hair with a small dog.
Though his attention soon shifted when he heard sounds coming from his daughter, indicating she had woken up. He gently took her out of the stroller, hearing her quiet down once she was in his arms, close to him. Whenever he would hold her, Biyoo would calm down more quickly than with Joonghyuk. He remembered how Joonghyuk was a little disappointed due to Biyoo’s preference towards him, making Dokja let out a small laugh at the memory. The man looked like a sad puppy with his ears down when he came to realize that.
Except he was still a great father and husband, always making sure the both of them are comfortable and taken care of.
The soft wind blew, messing up his hair as his eyes met Biyoo’s.
“I wonder who you’ll look more similar to once you grow,” he wondered outloud, allowing the infant’s small hand to grab onto his finger.
He sat for a little while longer before deciding that it is time to return, content with spending some time outside finally. It seemed both of them were getting hungry anyway, best to return back home.
Dokja felt his chest warm when he thought of the word. Home.
Growing up, there wasn’t exactly a home, one that he especially wanted to return to.
Except now there was, two people who waited for him and loved him dearly.
For the first time in his life, he finds himself content and in a peaceful state.

Chapter Text
Half a decade has already passed by now. Instead of an apartment, there was now a spacious house that always greeted others with delicious aroma of food and bedtime stories, toys and crayons strewn over the coffee table and floor. Photo frames littered the walls of a family along the shaky crayon drawings, children’s books filled shelves along with different genres and classics.
Their mornings tended to be either chaotic or quiet. But it was never filled with tension or yells, instead laughter, teasing and quiet conversations.
“Biyoo-yah, we’ll be late,” Dokja called out.
Their daughter was already starting her first day of school at six years old, energetic and eager despite being usually shy and quiet.
“Appa is taking a long time,” Biyoo replied, running up to him as he placed the small hat on top of her head.
He lifted a brow as he looked up, noticing Joonghyuk come down the stairs. Usually, Joonghyuk was the first one by the door. But this was also not the first time since their daughter was born, both of them usually forgetting things due to being in a rush or distracted.
“She forgot her backpack,” Joonghyuk told him, holding onto the strap of the small bag that contained everything she needed for her first day.
“Will ahjumma come here later?” Biyoo asked. Dokja always knew who she was talking about. Sooyoung. Somehow, his close friend had grown very close to their daughter, evening beginning to write age-appropriate stories for her since she has taken a liking into reading just like him.
He still remembers how happy he felt, seeing her eyes light up just like he did when he was little whenever reading stories with his mother.
“She’ll pick you up from your school once you’re done,” he told her, moving to hold her small hand.
Just yesterday it was even smaller, wrapping around my finger. Now it’s her first day of school and she has reached my hip already, he realized.
Joonghyuk followed after them, locking the door before moving to where the car was, Dokja already making sure that Biyoo’s seatbelt was on inside the car.
“Anything else we may have forgotten?” He asked Joonghyuk.
“Hopefully not,” Joonghyuk answered, trying to remember before nodding once he made sure.
Soon enough, they left home, ready for the day.
After his return from his maternity leave, he continued working until he moved to another publishing company, now holding a senior position. Dokja still enjoyed his work, now doing more than editing the work of authors. Joonghyuk was faring well himself. His own popularity in e-sports grew exponentially, allowing them to purchase a house where they could live more comfortably. It was on his insistence as well, so they’d have more space, especially for Biyoo once she became a toddler. This neighborhood was more private too, allowing them to breathe and avoid the public eye.
Despite some disagreements and arguments, they never parted even once. Biyoo was happy as w. A happy and healthy child, just as they wished.
Dokja wondered how his daughter was faring at school, since it was her first day. Did she find friends? Were the teachers treating her well? Last night, Joonghyuk already noticed his worries, reassuring that she’d be fine. The two of them made sure to send her to a good school, but even if something did happen, they’d just find a new and better one. They were able to make financial choices now unlike years back.
“You’ll damage the paper if you keep doing that,” Sooyoung broke his train of thought as she swiveled in the office chair.
Looking up, he stared at his friend with a deadpan look, who lazed around with a lemon candy in her mouth.
Finishing organizing the papers, he placed them away in the desk drawer.
“Did you come here to work or bother me?” He asked.
“Both,” Sooyoung answered as she shrugged.
The same as ever, he thought.
“It’s not like you’re doing much either, worrying over your daughter,” Sooyoung pointed out.
His eyebrow twitched. How observant.
“Who wouldn’t?”
Joonghyuk was probably the same, at his company building training the same two kids for the past half decade since joining his e-sports team. He couldn’t wait to hear from her once they were home. He always listened to his daughter’s ramblings, even if half of the time she didn’t make any sense. He always made sure to listen.
“Well, you may as well keep yourself occupied because I brought more work,” Sooyoung said, taking out a folder out of her bag before placing it on his desk.
Right, since he began working for a different publishing company, he became Sooyoung’s new editor upon her suggestion.
Not like he’ll complain though, he enjoyed her work anyway.
Late in the evening, dinner finished and dishes washed, everyone got ready for bed after a long day. Currently, he laid beside Biyoo after listening to her speak about her first day at school, the friends she made and what she learned, reading her a storybook.
Glancing at the small girl, he noticed that she had fallen asleep already halfway through the story he was reading to her that was gifted by Sooyoung. Smiling softly at her, he gently brushed her bangs away, allowing him to see her small face a little more clearly. Biyoo laid curled up to him while hugging a dokkaebi plush close to herself.
Before he could close the storybook shut and get up, he heard the door to Biyoo’s room open. Looking up, his eyes met Joonghyuk’s.
“Asleep?” Joonghyuk asked.
“Mn… I’ll come join you,” he answered.
Placing a small kiss on top of Biyoo’s head, he covered her small figure with the duvet and placed the book on the nightstand, making sure to turn on the small nightlight as he left the room. Just as he turned around, muscled arms enveloped him, bringing him closer.
Dokja breathed in Joonghyuk’s scent as he hugged him back.
After a long day of worrying that something could go wrong, they could finally breathe. The two stood in each other’s arms for a while before moving to the living room, laying on the sofa, the television on with low volume.
“How does Sooyoung find so much free time to write this much,” he told Joonghyuk about his day, before lifting his head slightly to look back at the man. “At least Biyoo enjoyed her story…”
Joonghyuk only smiled softly as he caressed Dokja’s cheek. He smiled softly as he laid his head back down, listening to the taller’s heartbeat.
For a while, it was silent besides the low volume of the television. The two laid, sharing warmth and company.
“I’m happy,” he muttered. “Very happy.”
The hold around his waist tightened.
“Me too,” Joonghyuk answered, his voice quiet and soft.
Dokja closed his eyes as he focused on Joonghyuk’s heartbeat as he felt himself relax.
After spending most of his youth in suffering and unbearable loneliness, he somehow managed to hold out and become happy, allowed to heal and love.
He had a home, that was Joonghyuk and Biyoo. The two he would cherish and care for the rest of his life.
