Where We Land

Summary:

The Sequel to ‘The Scent of Home’

With the truth finally revealed, Gao Tu and Shen Wenlang are ready to start over, together. But love confessions don't erase a decade of lies, and moving in together doesn't magically heal fifteen years of trauma. As they navigate domestic life, old wounds resurface.

Between financial betrayals, the return of Gao Tu's abusive father, and preparing for the arrival of their child, they'll find out if love is enough to build a home on.

Notes:

So excited to begin my first ever sequel.

While ‘The Scent of Home’ was written continuously without big time jumps or changes in setting, the plan is for this fic to cover the whole period of Gao Tu’s pregnancy.

I’ll be updating the tags as I write more content.

I have exciting things planned but I mostly hope to explore lots of domestic, fluffy moments as Gao Tu and Shen Wenlang work towards finding a happier place than where they started.

They deserve it after all!

Enjoy!! <3

Chapter Text

The elevator doors slid open with a muted chime, revealing a hallway of quiet luxury - high ceilings, warm lighting spilling from elegant sconces, and a polished floor that caused every footstep to echo. Gao Tu's weary mind registered it distantly, too worn down to catalogue any details except for the feeling of inadequacy that settled in his own chest.

He didn’t fit in here. This place wasn’t made for people like him.

He glanced a tired look up at Shen Wenlang who only shot him a reassuring smile and pulled him tighter into his side.

An employee had offered to bring their bags up from the car, but Shen Wenlang had waved him off with barely a glance - keeping them moving through the lobby and into the elevator without pause.

Gao Tu felt unsteady on his feet, the fatigue leeching every ounce of energy from his body in the aftermath of his fever. He was beyond grateful for the steadying hand at his waist - warm and grounding.

When they reached the door at the end of the hall, Shen Wenlang shifted his grip on the suitcase and produced a key card from his pocket. The lock beeped, the small light flashing green, and he pushed the door open with his shoulder.

“Here we are." Shen Wenlang murmured, his voice quiet in the stillness.

Gao Tu stepped over the threshold and his whole body sagged as the subtle iris scent enveloped him. Cool and soothing, the floral scent was woven into every inch of the apartment. His knees went weak.

They paused just inside the entrance and toed off their shoes. As Gao Tu turned from placing his shoes on the rack, Shen Wenlang set a pair of slippers on the floor in front of him before stepping back in just his socks.

His own slippers. Gao Tu opened his mouth to protest before the Alpha cut him off.

“I’ll grab another pair from upstairs.” he said easily, though his gaze was insistent, expectant. Gao Tu’s throat tightened, but he was too tired to argue. He just stepped into them and let himself be led into the apartment.

The silence was what struck him first - so different from his own apartment where traffic noise bled through the walls at all hours, where he could hear his neighbours' televisions and arguments and footsteps echoing.

Here, the city existed only as a view beyond the windows - distant and untouchable.

The apartment stretched out in warm neutrals and clean lines - polished wood floors catching the afternoon light, cream and beige softened by various green plants. Marble counters gleamed in the kitchen on the other side of the room. Everything was pristine and deliberately placed, an aesthetic Gao Tu knew intimately from years of working alongside the Alpha, but had never really occupied.

This apartment was unmistakably Shen Wenlang’s, saturated with years of his presence, and a needy moan bubbled up in Gao Tu’s throat which he squashed before it could escape.

He swayed, blood suddenly draining from his face.

"Easy." Shen Wenlang was there instantly, pulling him flush to his chest to steady him. The suitcase and bags were abandoned by the entrance as the Alpha's full attention zeroed in on him. "I've got you."

Gao Tu wanted to protest even as he blinked the dizziness away - to insist he was fine, that he could stand on his own - but the words wouldn't come. His body had carried him this far on sheer stubbornness and adrenaline, and now that they'd finally stopped moving, everything was catching up at once.

The car ride had helped. Shen Wenlang's constant stream of soothing pheromones had washed over him in the enclosed space, the Alpha's blazer still wrapped around his shoulders, the light circles Shen Wenlang's thumb had traced against his hand where it rested on the centre console.

Shen Wenlang had gently pushed him to rest, but while Gao Tu had let his head tip back against the seat and his eyes fall closed, actual sleep had eluded him. Even sitting side by side, his skin had itched with the need to be closer - to press himself against the Alpha’s side and stay there. To nuzzle.

It was pure Omega instinct and an intensity that Gao Tu had never faced before. It was alien and vulnerable but he didn’t have the energy to fight it.

Now standing in the Alpha’s territory, surrounded by his scent, that need had intensified to something almost unbearable.

"Come on." Shen Wenlang's voice was low and soothing as he led Gao Tu deeper into the apartment. "Let's get you comfortable."

Shen Wenlang guided him forward, and Gao Tu noticed the living room opened up before them - the sofa area set down into the floor, a few steps leading into the lowered space. The Alpha's hands adjusted at his waist and elbow as they descended, steadying and attentive.

The white sofa was large and inviting, grey cushions perfectly arranged. Shen Wenlang steered him toward it with single-minded focus, every movement radiating concern.

Gao Tu sank into the cushions with a soft exhale, and it took everything in him not to simply melt into them entirely. The sofa was absurdly comfortable - the kind of furniture that likely cost more than several months of his rent. The luxury of it felt wrong somehow, like he was tainting it by even touching it. But Shen Wenlang only pushed him down further into the plush fabric. His heavy body begged him to just give in and rest.

Behind his eyes, a dull throb had begun to build, the beginnings of a headache cutting through the fog.

"Stay here." Shen Wenlang squeezed his shoulder lightly before disappearing deeper into the apartment.

Gao Tu let his head tip back against the cushions, eyes falling closed. He could hear Shen Wenlang moving somewhere beyond the kitchen, up the stairs - the quiet opening and closing of doors, then footsteps returning, quick and purposeful.

"Here."

Gao Tu opened his eyes to find Shen Wenlang descending back into the living room area in worn slippers and with an armful of blankets, looking almost comically burdened by the pile of plush textiles. Despite his weariness, Gao Tu felt his lips quirk upward.

"I wasn't sure which you'd prefer," Shen Wenlang admitted, surprisingly shy, setting them down on the sofa beside him. "So I brought options."

He shook out a thick knit throw and draped it gently over Gao Tu's legs, then added a second blanket - softer, almost downy - tucking it around his shoulders with painstaking attention. The weight was immediately comforting, cocooning him in warmth. Gao Tu sought out the Alpha’s rich iris scent as he tried to subtly bury his nose into the material.

"Better?"

"Yes," Gao Tu managed, his voice rough. "Thank you."

Shen Wenlang nodded, but his expression remained troubled, gaze scanning Gao Tu's face as if cataloging every sign of discomfort.

“I’ll get you some water. And you should probably take some medicine.” The Alpha’s brow furrowed as his eyes glanced over to the door where the plastic bag of remedies sat. “Though I’m not sure if what I bought is safe for pregnant Omegas. I’ll check. If it’s not, I can head out and-“

“Shen Wenlang.”

The name came easily - too easily - and Gao Tu felt the shape of it linger on his lips like an unfamiliar taste. It was strange how natural it felt to say, even though habit still wanted to default to "Mr. Shen." His mind stuttered for just a second, catching up to what his mouth had already done.

The Alpha went completely still, frozen mid sentence. He turned from where he’d been near pacing and his eyes locked intently onto the Omega’s.

Heat crept up Gao Tu's neck as he watched something flicker across Shen Wenlang's face - surprise, then wonder, then something so warm and pleased it made Gao Tu want to look away. But he couldn't. He was caught in the intensity of that gaze, in the way Shen Wenlang's lips had parted slightly, as though the sound of his own name had stolen his breath.

"Water would be good," Gao Tu continued, barely louder than a whisper - trying to push past the moment even as his heart raced. "But then... could you just stay with me? For a bit?"

Shen Wenlang blinked, seeming to shake himself from whatever trance he'd fallen into. When he spoke, his voice was touched with something that sounded almost reverent.

"Of course. Yes." He swallowed hard, and Gao Tu could see him visibly collecting himself. "Of course I can.”

Shen Wenlang moved toward the kitchen - Gao Tu could hear him just behind the sofa area, the sound of a cabinet opening, water being poured. Then he was back, stepping down into the living space and pressing a glass of hot water carefully into Gao Tu's hands before hovering uncertainly.

"Sit," Gao Tu prompted with a small voice, patting the cushion beside him. "Please?”

Shen Wenlang obeyed, settling himself on the sofa but leaving a deliberate distance between them - close enough to help if needed, but far enough to avoid crowding.

Always so considerate. Always trying so hard to do the right thing.

Gao Tu took a slow sip of water, letting the heat of the glass warm his hands, the steam gently fill his lungs, before he set the glass on the low table at the side of the sofa. He could feel Shen Wenlang watching him, practically vibrating with the effort of restraining himself from fussing further.

Too tired to fight his instincts any longer - too worn down to maintain the walls he'd built so meticulously over fifteen years - Gao Tu simply let himself move. He shifted closer, tucking himself against Shen Wenlang's side and letting his head come to rest on the Alpha's chest, one hand fisting into his shirt.

He felt the hitch in Shen Wenlang's breath, the sudden tension in his frame as if he was afraid to move.

"Is this... is this alright?” Gao Tu murmured, suddenly uncertain despite the way his whole body wanted to relax into the warmth. His own muscles began to tense and just as he was about to move away, the Alpha gently took Gao Tu’s hand that had been pressed between them.

"Yes." The word came almost choked. Then Shen Wenlang's arm came up, wrapping around the Omega’s shoulders and holding him close. "God, yes. This is - you can always-" He seemed to struggle for words before simply tightening his hold. "This is more than alright.”

Gao Tu made a small sound of contentment, burrowing closer. The steady rhythm of Shen Wenlang's heartbeat beneath his ear was hypnotic, and the Alpha's scent surrounded him completely - soothing his frayed nerves and quieting the persistent itch beneath his skin.

This. This was what he'd needed.

"Sleep," Shen Wenlang whispered, the hand around his shoulder moving up to card gently through Gao Tu's hair. "I'll be right here."

Gao Tu wanted to respond - wanted to thank him, to say something meaningful about how safe he felt, how right this was. But exhaustion pulled at him with irresistible force, and the words dissolved before they could form.

He let his eyes fall closed, and within moments, sleep claimed him.
