Chapter Text
Kevin and Monty were sat on Kevin’s bed the other two boys in Edgar and Monty’s room, Edgar having had taken an interest in Rolland’s church’s beliefs requested the boys switch rooms for the night so the two of them could discuss the topic. Kevin is sat with his back pressed to the wall with his legs tucked up to his chest, Monty is sprawled across the foot of the bed listening with rapt attention as Kevin tells him a story about how a boy in his school once got caught cooking an entire steak in a air fryer in back of his English class.
“So what did the teacher do?” Monty asked looking up at Kevin.
“He acted as is he didn’t notice and then when it was done he paused the lesson and made the boy bring it up to the front of the class and eat it in front of the whole class like some shitty panto version of Matilda.” Monty bursted out laughing at this with Kevin following not far behind.
“How did he even sneak both those is?” Monty was barely able to get the question out between his chuckles.
“That’s the thing nobody knows he refused to explain it to anyone and-“
At that moment the candle in their room blew out shrouding the room in darkness. Kevin reaches down quickly to grab at Monty’s arm, he was never a fan of the dark to many horrible things happened to people in the dark in Disney movies.
“Do you have any matches in your room?” Kevin couldn’t see Monty but he could imagine his head tilted to the side.
“Nope usually we just get Roland to light it when it goes out.” Kevin is starting to get scared at this point sat defenceless in the dark not even his curse could scare anything that goes bump in the night off because all that he can do is fart songs.
“We can go hang out in my room with the other two or even just go in there to grab matches to relight the candle.” Monty suggests the bed creaking under him as he makes a move to get up.
“It’s to dark out there, what if we run into something or pass your room accidentally and end up in a different boys room.” Kevin’s still holding tight to Monty’s arm keeping him in place not wanting to risk the going out into the dark halls of St Churnleys blind. While the boys rooms may be not have any other rooms in between them they’re not directly next to each other and there’s a chance they’ll get turned around and eaten by something wandering the halls no matter how unlikely anything like that actually haunts these halls
“It’s fine I can see the way.” Monty got up out the bed tugging Kevin with him as if he hadn’t just said the single most stupid sentence ever.
“What?” Kevin tries to get some understanding of the situation which Monty clearly doesn’t plan on giving him as he simply answers.
“I can see the way.”
“Well, yes, Monty I got that part what do you mean you can see it’s pitch black.” Kevin gestures at the void that now covers his room, he swears that he spotted something dashing past the window and flinches back.
“I can see in the dark, I’ve got night vision.” Kevin just stared at where it sounds like Monty’s voice was coming from in disbelief.
“You can see in the dark.” Kevin’s shocked this is the first he’s hearing about this, though he supposes there hasn’t really been any opportunity’s to bring up his apparent night vision. Though the knowledge that if there was something there Monty would be able to see it calms Kevin’s heart a wee bit.
“Yeah it’s actually quite annoying for when I’m trying to sleep but it was always useful for finding myself away home after I transformed.”
“Why did you never say anything?”
“I’m a fucking werewolf obviously I can see in the dark.”
“Oh alright just get us to the other room!” Kevin throws his arms up in defeat before grabbing on to Montys hand as he lets Monty lead them out of the room.
The halls are as dark as the void in Minecraft, Walt he misses his PlayStation, the old wooden flooring groaning like it lost a bet, the cold seeps through Kevin’s body as they try to make their way across as quietly as possible to not wake the other boys or alert any teachers. Looking up at Monty Kevin’s a bit disappointed he couldn’t already tell Monty had night vision, the way his eyes gleamed in the dark like some of the stray cats he would see on his way back home from school in the Winter, when the sky was already slipping to sleep and his parents forgot to pick him up from the school gates to wrapped up in their latest Disney rewatch. To wrapped up in his thoughts Kevin doesn’t realise he nearly ran into some until Monty gently moves Kevin out of its path, however he’s not able to stop it brushing past Kevin’s leg causing Kevin to jump.
“What was that.” Kevin hissed trying to keep his tone low.
“Just a table.” Monty whispers, or well whispers if you ask him but that boy cannot whisper so it comes out more of a lower case yell.
They soon manage to make it to Edgar and Montys room and knock on the door before opening it. Edgar and Roland are sat on the floor staring at the door a notebook, pen and highlighters strewn about between them.
“Oh hello chaps, you gave me a right scare I thought you were a teacher.” Roland was the first to speak as Monty and Kevin wonder into the room softly shutting the door behind them.
“I did as well.” Edgar pipes up and Monty lies down beside him with his head on Edgar’s lap while Kevin chooses to lie down on Montys bed.
“Yeah, well the candle in my room burned out and we couldn’t relight it so we decided to come hang out with you two.” Kevin explains.
“Or well we were coming to hang out but it seems Monty’s tired himself out.”
“Nuh uh.” Montys intelligent rebuttal comes from his place on the floor, causing the other boys to break out into laughter.
The night goes on and the boys all chat quietly as Monty drifts off to sleep, and if it wasn’t a table Kevin brushed his leg against in the hall then that’s between Monty and Sarge in control tomorrow, for now he just lets everyone relax.
