Whiplash

Summary:

No, no. No, he’s wrong. Atsushi’s got it wrong. He does not, in fact, feel that way about Chuuya. He doesn’t feel any type of way about Chuuya, other than annoyance and disgust at his stupid tacky hat and his stupid distracting hair and his stupid bright blue eyes-

Dazai leaves the party early.

OR

After giving Atsushi "Partner Advice" to help deal with Akutagawa, Shin Soukoku starts dating. This gives Dazai whiplash so bad, he realises he's in love with Chuuya. Cue a gay pathetic breakdown.

Work Text:

Dazai slips into his seat, fashionably late and ignoring Kunikida’s protests as usual. He’s ready for a typical slow morning of lazing about when his music is interrupted by the loud thunk of Atsushi’s head meeting the desk–rather violently–beside him. Followed by a groan.

He blinks, not bothering to hide a snicker. His amusement is quickly interrupted by the thwack of Kunikida’s notebook against his head. "Stop tormenting him! Atsushi get up, I waste enough time dealing with Dazai's destructive tendencies." Kunikida turns to Atsushi, notebook now pointed at him.

Scrambling to sit up and avoid his mentor’s fate, he stammers out, "S-sorry Kunikida-san! It's just- Argh! I don't think I can handle another mission with Akutagawa-"

Kunikida interrupts him with a flat look. “As members of the Armed Detective Agency, it is part of our duty to work with and maintain the alliance with the Port Mafia–however much we may dislike it.”

Dazai sticks his tongue out at Kunikida as he continues to lecture his poor mentee. He knows a few things about uncooperative, doglike partners. Yuck, even the thought of that chibi mafioso makes him feel sick. Something in his stomach constricts at any mention of Chuuya.

“But- Kunikida-san! He is impossible to work with!” Atsushi growls, ears flattening against his head and frustrated in the way he only gets on the topic of Akutagawa... Eerily resembling Dazai’s own attitude towards his mafioso counterpart. “He doesn’t listen to any of my ideas- He demands I use my ability to transport us- He keeps calling me Jinko- And- And he only ever cooperates when Dazai-san is there!” He punctuates his last point with a flail of his arm in Dazai’s direction.

Before Kunikida can respond, Dazai butts in. “Ne~ Atsushi-kun,” His eyes take on their signature mischievous sparkle. The one that makes ADA members wince, and Port Mafia members tremble. “Sounds like you need some partner advice.” He waggles his fingers at the boy.

Atsushi looks like he’s about to join in on hitting him over the head for half a second, before his eyes light up.

“Please, Dazai-san! How do you and Chuuya-san work so well together!? Don’t you hate each other?”

“Ah, it’s true I hate that tacky little hat-rack, but I guess we do work well together. You should try spending some time with Akutagawa outside of work! Whenever Chuuya and I were too frustrated to work together, we’d just go to the arcade to blow off steam.”

Atsushi eyes him suspiciously, “Do you really think that will work?”

Dazai pats him on the back, “You’ll figure it out, Atsushi-kun!”

It’s for the best if his two proteges can learn to get along properly, or at least work together without ripping each other’s limbs off. To be fair, that is mostly Akutagawa’s doing... But thinking about it more deeply, they're good for each other. Their abilities complement and challenge each other, Akutagawa forced into defence and Atsushi into offence. They watch each other’s backs.

It reminds him of his own partnership. Dazai the brains, Chuuya the brawn. Not that it's that simple, of course. Dazai conceals Chuuya’s weaknesses and Chuuya guards his. Chuuya, always stationed on his right, his blind side… Something in his stomach roils. All this thinking of his partner is making him feel gross. Perhaps he should invite the slug out to the arcade so he can cheat again.

Ignoring Kunikida’s cries of protest, Dazai saunters out of the agency, already pulling up a certain contact on his phone.

“Dazai-san-“

“Akutagawa issues again? That brat really never learns, huh... Anyway, try getting him a gift! I buy Chuuya his stupid, fancy wine when I want him to stop being mad at me.”

“Dazai-“

“The best way to deal with an uncooperative partner is to think about them all the time! I’m always thinking of ways to annoy Chuuya. Last week I edited the autocorrect on his phone to say “Dazai is the best” for every word I could think of. I have 27 books of grievances with him.”

“Daz-“

“If Akutagawa is avoiding you, just break into his house! That’s how I do my best pranks on Chuuya. No level of security can keep me out~”

“Da-“

“For a partnership to work, you have to know everything about your partner. I know Chuuya better than anyone else and he knows me the same! It’s your job to figure out how to work and deal with your partner, and understand all their thoughts and actions.”

Dazai’s stuck with the rest of the agency and mafia at some stuffy networking party, filled with the highest class citizens of Yokohama. And criminals of course. An extravagant gala, that’s dressed the members of both organisations in their nicest, most formal clothes. Some ‘learning opportunity for the younger members’  that’s got Dazai in a nice blue suit and his gaze stuck on Chuuya, wearing a startling red kimono with gold and black accents. He’s pulled his hair back into a neat bun with a bejewelled pin keeping it together, and-

Someone taps him on the shoulder. Dazai tears his gaze away from the distracting sight and- oh. Atsushi, in a pristine white vest, paired with a deep blue suit jacket and pants. … Holding hands. With Akutagawa.

Dazai’s mind reels, and, for a second, he’s half-convinced he’s dreaming.

What. Is. Happening.

“Dazai-san!” He’s greeted cheerfully while still trying to reckon this observation with his understanding of the world. “I- uh… We have something to tell you.” Atsushi glances at their intertwined fingers.

“The weretiger and I are dating.” Akutagawa drops the verbal equivalent of nuke. “We would like to thank you for your romantic advice. It has been very useful in the development of our relationship.”

Scratch that. This is the nuke.

Mind going a mile a minute, trying to reconcile what he’s been told with the laws of reality, physics, gravity and whatnot, Dazai stumbles through his reply.

“You’re… welcome?” Romantic advice? What romantic advice? Dazai’s a womanizer, and would of course give Atsushi his questionable dating advice, but he can’t remember- Had Atsushi asked at some point and he’d forgotten? No, there’s no way he’d just forget.

Atsushi pipes up again. “Seriously Dazai-san! Your tips for working as partners really helped us grow closer and figure things out. I never knew you and Chuuya-san felt that way!”

What’s worse than a nuke? That–whatever that is–is what Atsushi just dropped.

Felt that way... About... Chuuya? Chuuya–Executive of the Port Mafia–Nakahara!?

No.

No. No, he can’t-

Dazai is vaguely aware that he’s shaking, staring into space, frozen still in the middle of the party as Shin Soukoku wander off.

His gaze catches on Chuuya across the room, laughing lightly with a group of elegant women-

Dazai leaves the party early.

He lies awake, hours later, staring at the aptly named contact on his phone, and the message history beneath it.

11:43 PM

slug

oi

asshole

where'd you go?

11:46 PM

ryu said he saw you leave?

your agency friends are looking for you

??

11:54 PM

get home safe

Dazai switches his phone off, letting it clatter onto the floor beside his futon. He doesn’t bother plugging it in.

Fuck.

Dazai ends up at the agency earlier than usual, (that being two hours late rather than his usual three) half in a daze. He still hasn’t replied to the messages. His phone is clenched tight in his pocketed hand as Kunikida yells at him for still being late and then commends him for arriving slightly earlier.

He sits down at his desk, resolving to distract himself with his mountains of paperwork. Eyes wandering to the empty seat next to him, he realises Atsushi is gone.

“Where’s Atsushi-kun?”

“On a joint mission with Akutagawa,”

Dazai’s mind is immediately brought back to the conversation at the gala last night- before he forcefully wrenches it away from the topic. He’s not thinking about it.

“Oh Kunikida, did you hear? Those two are dating now!” Yosano butts in, laughing

“They’re WHAT-!?”

Dazai’s eye twitches and he hastily pulls on his headphones to block out Yosano’s gossiping and Kunikida’s subsequent outrage. Does that mean if he and Chuuya ever-

No.

Not thinking about it.

He turns to the files–paperwork will distract him.

Oh- fucking-

The first file is a joint mission with the mafia. With Chuuya.

He slams his head into the desk.

Oh, huh?

Chuuya gazes down at the mission file in his hand. He’s been assigned to work with Kunikida? From what he knows glasses hates doing liaison with the mafia, let alone working closely with an executive. His partner on joint missions was usually Dazai, and if it wasn’t he would always wriggle his way onto the mission somehow, like the slimy fish he is.

Chuuya checks his phone. Still no reply to the texts he sent at the gala. He frowns and takes a quick photo of the file, sending it to Dazai with a couple question marks.

The idiot’s been acting real weird lately.

Okay, Dazai needs to figure this out. There is absolutely no way his and Chuuya’s relationship could be mistaken as romantic. Right...? He shakes his head as if to physically dismiss the thought. Dazai, in love with Chuuya? Not possible. It’s just not an option. Falling for Chuuya would be the worst possible scenario- He’s not in love with Chuuya. He can’t be.

Dazai stuffs his hands in his pockets and shoulders his way out of the café under the agency into the cold air. He needs a walk to clear his head. Forget any and all notions of romance with his partner. Something in his chest constricts, like a hand wrapping tightly around his heart. He digs his nails into his palm.

His gaze flits unseeingly across the shop fronts and windows as he strolls down the street. He passes all his usual haunts without a second thought; his mind fully focused on his conundrum. How could Atsushi have mistaken his advice as romantic? (The prospect of his two proteges dating is still making his head swim.)

Dazai thinks back to all the advice he’d given him over the past month. He’d told him to spend time with Akutagawa outside of work, but that had just been practical right? It’s much easier to work with someone and tolerate their presence once you’re able to blow off steam outside of official settings. Quality time is important for forming trust between partners- It’s not romantic, right...?

Dazai glares at the pavement, increasing his pace until he’s closer to a jog than a walk. It’s the same with his advice for getting partners gifts! It just makes sense. They can’t work well together if they’re mad at each other. It has nothing to do with any personal feelings. And Dazai buying Chuuya wine he knows he likes is just evidence he’s a good partner, not that he’s harbouring secret feelings for him.

Thinking about Chuuya all the time isn’t indicative of feelings, Dazai’s just being practical. It’s sensible to keep his partner in mind, it’s smart and clever. It’s useful for plans and missions and so what if half the time he’s thinking about his eyes or his hair or his hands-

Dazai breaks into a run, screwing his eyes shut as they begin to blur. Breaking into Chuuya’s house is just good for conflict resolution, it has nothing to do with wanting to see him. It’s just because he’s a genius that he understands Chuuya so well, he’s just a good partner! Never mind the fact that the thought of Chuuya growing closer to someone else makes his stomach twist, his heart hurt and his head pound-

His train of thought (he’s not panicking- He’s not-) is cut off suddenly when he crashes into a small, familiar body. He stumbles backwards only to be met with a recognisable glare.

Shit-!

“Ow- Mackerel!” Chuuya rubs his forehead where it just collided with his partner’s stupid, solid chest, “The hell are you doing running down the street with your eyes closed!?”

He flicks his gaze up to Dazai to glare at him, only to find an expression he’s never seen before. “Oi, Dazai...?” He steps forward hesitantly, “Are you good?”

Dazai scrambles backwards in response, only confusing Chuuya more. Since when has the bastard been so on edge around him? “Uh- H-hey, Chuu- Chibi. Slug. Um.” He blinks wide eyed, like his fishy namesake.

Chuuya scowls further, “Fucker, are you ignoring me!?” He waves his phone in Dazai’s face, “You haven’t responded to my texts, and I got stuck with Glasses on the next mission! What’s going on with you?”

Dazai’s eyes blow somehow wider and his face reddens rapidly. “I- Chuuya- Bye-!” He suddenly takes off sprinting in the other direction tripping over multiple times in his haste.

Chuuya stands there stunned. What the fuck?

Dazai groans, burying his face into his pillow. He’d gone back to his dorm–too embarrassed to return to the agency–and silenced his phone, not wanting to see the bombardment of texts and calls from Kunikida and Chuuya. He roughly rubs his still blushing cheeks, because apparently, he can control his heartbeat perfectly but not his fucking face-

This is horrible. This is the worst. This is quite genuinely the worst-case scenario. Him in love with Chuuya!? His chest hurts. He blinks away the blurriness in his eyes.

Chuuya can’t find out.

He can’t.

Dazai can live perfectly fine ignoring his newfound desires for Chuuya’s attention, affection, love... But he can’t lose him. He can’t risk Chuuya reacting badly and pushing him away. Refusing to work with him… Being disgusted by him and his unwanted affections… Hating him-

He cuts off the train of thought before it can go further. His arms itch. He wishes he’d never realised. He was fine living in denial, fine not knowing, fine going about his usual dynamic with Chuuya. He was fine with how they were.

Dazai is not a being capable of love, he’d once thought. But now he’s aware of the festering desires for his partner he’d hidden away from himself in his blackened heart and it stills feels horribly inadequate. Compared to the open, bleeding heart that Chuuya wears on his sleeve, Dazai’s dimmed, mangled feelings can hardly compare.

How could he look Chuuya in the face and tell him he loves him, when it took seven years and his own protege ramming it through his head for him to realise?

Dazai rubs his eyes harshly, ignoring the building dampness and rolls over, tucking into a ball to go to sleep. It's 9 PM and Dazai has always had trouble falling asleep, but he screws his eyes shut anyway.

He can’t let Chuuya find out. He selfishly clings to the scraps of the love he aches for. He can’t let Chuuya know he loves him. His teeth dig into his fist. He’s wretched, selfish… Chuuya deserves so much better. Better than a partner who left him.

Until he gets himself back under control, he’ll need to avoid Chuuya. The mafioso probably won’t even notice.

Dazai is doomed. Completely and utterly doomed. Dazai’s plans rarely ever fail, and even so he always has backup plans beyond backup plans. But this time? His plan to avoid Chuuya until he can properly force down his feelings? Yeah, that’s all he had. And now the President has forced him back on the mission with Kunikida and Chuuya. He’s doomed.

It’s not even a difficult mission! This hardly needs two detectives, let alone a mafia executive, let alone Double Black.

This has Ranpo all over it.

Dazai resolves to just get through the mission and escape as quickly as possible. Chuuya is shooting him pointed looks he’s doing his best to ignore, certain his facial expression is doing horrific things. Peeling him open and exposing all his vulnerable wants to the world. Ready for Chuuya to tread on and crush them.

He can feel a warm flush in his cheeks and is distantly aware of his stilted voice and body language. Kunikida may not have picked up on it, but Chuuya certainly has and is staring at him like he's a piece of meat. He just needs to get the mission over and done with and retreat back to the relative safety of his dorm.

He stumbles through the mission on autopilot, for once sharing all his information and plans. Which he is certain has caused Kunikida to realise there’s something wrong, considering he’s now sticking close to Dazai, like he may fall apart at any moment. He’s not wrong…

Chuuya’s intense gaze trained on him has shifted to determined concern. Dazai itches to flee. He scrapes his nails harshly along his skin under the bandages.

Chuuya’s not letting the bastard get away this time. He’s getting to the bottom of this.

Dazai blinks dazedly at his own hands, he wonders, vaguely, if he’s dissociating. His vision feels swimmy and his surroundings seem distant. Despite how wrong it feels with Chuuya right there, Dazai remains beside Kunikida. Stumbling and flinching away from any advance Chuuya makes.

Guilt pierces his heart when he catches the brief flickers of surprise and hurt in Chuuya’s eyes. It doesn’t matter, it’s worth it, it’s better for both of them. Dazai will get the hang of his new situation and be back to his ‘normal’ self in no time. Chuuya will forget all about his odd behaviour and they can go back to being perfectly fine, like they were before the realisation of Dazai’s feelings bulldozed through his life.

Has Chuuya done something wrong? Is that why Dazai is avoiding him? Damn it-

The mission is completed in about half the time as it is when Dazai drags his feet. Dazai just has to wait out the end and then he can bolt. He just has to make it until the police arrive to take the ability users into custody and then he can escape. He just has to-

A strong arm wraps around his waist and suddenly he’s being flung over a shoulder and pinned in place by the arm tightly gripping the backs of his thighs. He yelps, his mind thrust through the fog and back into reality.

“Ch- Chuuya!?”

He pushes his palms against Chuuya’s shoulders and back trying in vain to escape, but well, Chuuya has always been the physically stronger of the two.

“Quit it, fish-face. You’re coming with me, fucker- You’re kidding yourself if you think you can get away with avoiding me!”

Dazai can feel his heartrate rapidly increase. Huh, guess he isn’t as good at controlling that as he thought either-

“Chuuya- Put- Put me down! I- Kunikida help-!” He flails an arm out for his bewildered work partner, just before he’s swung around away from him as Chuuya turns to face Kunikida himself.

“Oi, Glasses. I’m stealing the stinky fish. He’ll be returned by Monday. See ya.”

Dazai continues to struggle against his partner and call for help as he is literally kidnapped by the mafia. Kunikida does nothing, only staring at him, frozen, as he’s dragged away against his will. Traitor.

Dazai is dumped unceremoniously onto Chuuya’s cushy couch, the fading light of day filtering through the penthouse’s large windows. He blinks, completely stunned.

“Talk.” Chuuya demands, standing over him, arms crossed and an unimpressed scowl plastered across his face.

Dazai feels his breath pick up. His heartrate spikes like a frightened animal, pattering quickly in his chest. Flee.

He makes for the door. He accomplishes exactly two steps before he’s thrown back against the couch.

“Dazai seriously!? What the fuck! Stay here and talk to me!”

No-! Chuuya please-“ Dazai can feel himself starting to shake, starting to fall apart. All his carefully built walls and masks cracking under the pressure. Not constructed to withstand the sudden onslaught of emotion. “I can’t- I can’t.”

Chuuya pushes him into the couch by his shoulders, pinning him in place. Dazai hiccups, feeling his eyes start to water. Damn it damn it damn it- He’s crumbling, he’s cracking, he’s breaking- He’s being exposed, vulnerable and raw beneath Chuuya’s intense gaze. Split open, ready to be destroyed.

Chuuya cups his face incomprehensibly gently and slides down to sit on the couch beside him. A tear trails down Dazai’s cheek, and he bites his lip hard enough to bleed as he chokes back a whimper.

“Dazai, you idiot-… Osamu... Please just tell me what’s wrong. Tell me what’s happening. Tell me how I can help, how I can fix it. I don’t want you avoiding me- I don’t want you crying.”

And Dazai? Dazai is weak. He is a weak, weak man. He breaks. The words tumble past his lips before he can stop them.

“I- I love you. I love you- I’m in love with you Chuuya- and I don’t-“ His voice cracks pathetically as he sobs, “I don’t know what to do.”

Chuuya’s eyes widen and for a long terrifying moment Dazai is sure he’s about to be hit. About to be thrown from Chuuya’s hold, kicked out the door and out of his life. But the sting never comes.

Instead, he’s suddenly, violently pulled into Chuuya’s lap, tight arms crushing him against his partner’s chest as his face is buried in Dazai’s hair. Stunned, confused, but suddenly faced with everything he’s wanted, Dazai clings.

“Da- Osamu- God Osamu… you fucking idiot-“ Chuuya chokes out, voice strained, “Dazai I know. I knew already.”

Dazai rips his face from his chest, staring at Chuuya with blurry tear-filled eyes, completely blindsided. His worldview shattered for the fourth time since this whole debacle started.

“Chuuya- Chuuya knows…?”

Chuuya cups his cheeks in his hands, using his thumbs to swipe away the tears spilling down his face and gathering in his eyelashes. “Stupid- Stupid fucking fish. Yeah, I know. I love you too.”

Dazai hadn’t yet managed to reconstruct his worldview in time from the last revelation for it to be shattered again, but nonetheless his heart constricts tighter. How- How could Chuuya know!? He didn’t even know- How could Chuuya have known this whole time and said nothing, somehow, impossibly, loving him back-

He’s startled out of his spiral by a soft pair of lips meeting his own, his brain short circuiting before he regains the presence of mind to kiss his partner back. His eyes slide closed as he melts into it softly. It's tender and gentle, one of Chuuya’s hands sliding up to card through his hair as the other cups his jaw and guides the kiss.

They break apart, Chuuya kissing both cheeks and then his nose, whispering softly, “Idiot…” Dazai has to bite back a frankly embarrassing whimper. “I’ve been in love with you for years. I… suspected you felt the same. But I never had confirmation.”

Dazai blinks, dumbfounded, his brain still catching up with the events that just transpired. Chuuya… kissed him? Chuuya loves him? It’s everything he wanted and more.

“Now I do, I guess. Dazai- What the hell brought this on? Why were you so upset?” The hand still on his cheek is stroking gently with his thumb. Dazai rubs his eyes trying to brush away the tears, embarrassed now at his overreaction and Chuuya’s subsequent anticlimactic reaction…

“I- A-Atsushi asked me for partner advice…? So- so I told him about our partnership to help him with Akutagawa- But then they started dating-” He rubs his eyes harder, God why cant he stop crying-!?

Chuuya pulls his hands away, “It freaked you out, huh? You gave Atsushi advice based on us and he interpreted it romantically, and that scared you?” Dazai nods miserably.

“I- I didn’t know until- I mean… I knew I cared about Chuuya but I didn't- I didn’t know. Atsushi took what I said as romantic and I just-” He dives back into Chuuya’s hold. It’s pathetic, but honestly he just needs to feel safe right now.

Chuuya holds him close, stroking his hair gently, “Okay, that explains the sudden realisation, but why were you so upset? Why’d you push me away…?” Dazai pulls back from where he'd lodged his face in Chuuya's neck, heart clenching at the hurt in his gaze.

Hurting Chuuya was the last thing he had wanted. But seemingly his attempts at minimising the damage to their relationship had only harmed it further…

“I- I didn’t want Chuuya to find out. I didn’t- Think he could ever feel the same… I thought it’d scare you away or disgust you or-”

He’s crushed even tighter against Chuuya’s chest, “You emotionally constipated idiot! D’you really think you can get rid of me that easily?” Chuuya begins vigorously shaking him, “Bastard we are partners, if you abandoning me for four years didn’t ruin that, do you really think some feelings will!?” He bonks him over the head lightly, “Even if I didn’t return them, I wouldn't have just thrown you away!”

Dazai blinks up at him stunned, a stupidly relieved smile breaking on his face. Chuuya can’t resist kissing it again. He quickly hauls Dazai up, carrying him with ease towards his lavish bedroom.

“You are staying here tonight and sleeping. I can see suitcases under your eyes you darn insomniac! Been stressing about all this, huh?”

Dazai jerks a small nod as he's dumped in the bed and quickly swaddled in both blankets and Chuuya’s arms. He’s gently pulled into warm, deep sleep, the turmoil that had been haunting his waking and sleeping hours vanquished by only the soft touch of his partner. Dazai tucks his nose in against Chuuya’s neck pressing against the warm skin with a smile. He drifts off perfectly content for the first time.

He’s just finished dragging the last ability user out of the crumbling warehouse, when Dazai hears Kunikida call for him.

“Oi! Bandages! You’ve got a visitor.” He drawls, unimpressed. Dazai flicks his head up quickly–the groaning ability user forgotten on the ground–and immediately spots a certain redhead approaching.

“Chibi!” Dazai calls, excited, quickly running up to him and flinging his arms around his partner. “I didn’t know you were coming!?”

Chuuya laughs softly, “Yeah, yeah, hi to you too. Your president called in our cleaning crew, I’m just here to supervise.”

Dazai grins, after sorting everything out (thanks to Dazai’s incredibly embarrassing gay breakdown) they had decided to try the whole ‘relationship’ thing. It’s tentative and new, both men learning how to treat each other properly. They’ve hurt each other in the past, badly, and are taking to steps to prevent their relationship souring and turning toxic.

But it means now that Dazai’s no longer avoiding Chuuya, and they are both finding excuses to work with each other as much as possible. Not that they didn’t do that before, but people are definitely beginning to notice. Evidenced by Kunikida’s growing disdain at Chuuya’s constant presence at the agency and on their missions.

They haven’t explicitly divulged their budding relationship. But they’re also not subtle. Dazai is currently quite literally draped all over his partner.

Halfway through trying to melt his body into Chuuya’s, Dazai realises he has the perfect opportunity for an idea that’s been nagging at him since they got together. He grabs Chuuya’s hand, ignoring his half-hearted yelps of protest and drags him over to where Atsushi is resting by the agency’s van.

“Atsushi-kun!”

Atsushi startles slightly, “O-oh! Hi Dazai-san! Um, hi Chuuya-san?”

Understanding flashes in Chuuya’s eyes and he throws an amused smile at Dazai. “Chuuya and I would like to thank you,” he grins, “without you and Akutagawa getting together, I never would have realised I was in love with Chuuya!”

“W-wh- Oh! Congratulations Dazai-san! U-um you too Chuuya-san! I’m… glad I could help?”

Chuuya snickers and ruffles the kid’s hair, “Yeah thanks kid, good job having your shit together enough for you, Akutagawa, and Dazai.”

The kid flushes and scrambles for a response, “Thank you Chuuya-san- I think...?”

Dazai yanks him into a quick crushing hug, patting him on the head before letting him go and letting him scramble back to Akutagawa.

“Hey, Dazai,” Chuuya cups his jaw and turns his face to him, “You’re an idiot, but… I love you.”

Dazai smiles and leans down into the awaiting kiss. He’d thought the revelation of his feelings for Chuuya would have been the end of his world, but now, he’s starting to realise, it’s the beginning of a newer, brighter one. A life full of everything he'd been craving for, that he has no intention of losing.
