Chapter Text
The watchtower was weirdly calm that morning, that type of calm that Clark always tried to convince himself that meant peace even if it normally wasn´t
As he walked into the main meetings room with two coffees one in each hand
As Bruce was already there, hunched over mission reports looking like a dead man walking, almost as if he hadn't slept in days, though Clark Knew better, he always had known. Something about his heartbeat changed when he was exhausted (softer, slower)
“You're early.” Clark said, pushing one of the coffees towards him.
“As if I'd ever be late.” Bruce replied without looking up, but he still took the coffee. It was the same order Clark always gave him: black, no sugar.(fucking depressing) Bruce never told him, but Clark knew it was his favorite way to drink coffee.
They stayed together in that comfortable silence, such a familiar one too, the kind that only happens between people who definitely know each other too well for their own good.
Clark glanced at him.
Noticing that Bruce’s cape was draped wrong. A small shift from last night’s late and probably messy patrol. Without thinking, Clark reached out and adjusted it on his shoulder.
Bruce froze just slightly at the action though barely noticeable it was a pause so subtle a normal person wouldn’t notice. But Clark of course wasn’t normal
“…Thanks,” Bruce muttered,quickly looking away.
Clark smiled. “Anytime.”
Before either of them could say anything else, the Watchtower alarms blared to life. “Incoming threat detected,” The speaker's echoed. “North of Gotham .”
Bruce sighed heavily. “So much for a quiet morning.”
Clark chuckled. “We never get those anyway.”
They were on their way in a matter of mere seconds, with Clark flying, Bruce using his grappling gun besides him using the buildings as his personal playground, Though the villain ended up being Titan speakerman, a barely known villain that was trying to steal nuclear weaponry, was already as always causing chaos.
Clark took the initiative immediately. Though Bruce didn't argue. He never quite did when Clark tried to protect him as Clark moved in front of him to shield him from an attack.
And Titan speakerman noticed.
“Interesting,” Titan speakerman said amused. “Superman steps in front of the Bat without hesitation. Over and over again.”
Bruce narrowed his eyes and spoke back harshly. “Shut up.”
But Clark felt something twist in his stomach. Has it really become that obvious?
They took Titan speakerman down in minutes, coordinated as always ,no words, just pure instinct. Clark landed besides Bruce a bit later, brushing dust off his suit while watching him, eyes softer than they should’ve been.
“You okay?” Bruce asked.
Clark nodded, too quickly for comfort.
He could already feel something changing.
Something in Titan speakerman's smirk.
or maybe the way Bruce kept looking at him like there was a question neither of them had the balls to ask
Clark wished ,not for the first time, that he could tell him everything.
But neither of them said a thing.
what they didn't know was that somewhere far away, there was someone replaying the footage of Superman jumping in front of Batman, over and over, analyzing each frame
Plotting.
Waiting.
Watching.
