Work Text:
“Let me get this straight?” The detective said slapping down the manila folder that only contained two papers. A form the first officer filled out, stander paperwork, and a written confession by the offender sitting in front of him. Apparently, he came in with it already written.
The detective sat down on the cold metal chair; the feet scraped across the floor. He looked at the man across him. The man held his hands out in front of him resting them on the table one cupping the other as if his hands were cuffed together.
Detective Jung wouldn’t call himself a veteran and he was by no means green, he had seen his fair share of crazies, and he had seen an equal share of guilty people needing to clear their conscience. This one seemed like the latter. However, given the supposed crime it didn’t seem likely.
“You.” Jung asked pointing at the man while looking at the written confession. “Kidnapped the lead singer of Huntrix, held her for ransom, but gave her back before the cops where notified and before there concert that happened the same night, which all happened yesterday?”
“Yes.” The man, Jack Hwan, an immigrant from America but has family in South Korea, nodded. “Well kind of. Yes, I kidnapped her, but I didn’t ‘let’ her go, the others rescued her.”
“The others?” Jung asked.
“Of Huntrix. Mira and Zoey.” Hwan answered.
Jung raised his eyebrow. “You a fan?” He asked. Jung was a fan himself, but he didn’t need to say that to this supposed criminal.
“Oh yeah. My… My daughter showed me them.” Hwan said.
Jung set the paper down. “It’s just you can see why I’m having trouble believing this.” Jung waved at the papers in front of him. “I mean you just so happen to come across one of the top Idols in Korea, kidnapped her without anyone noticing, but before you can call for the ransom money the other two Idols of said group managed to overpower you and rescue the lead singer all before their sold out show the same night. Which we have several thousand witnesses to confirm they performed on time and without issue.”
“Yes. Well, I mean over powered me and some guys. But yes.”
“How many guys?”
Hwan made a face like he was thinking. “10 or so.” He said.
Jung put his head in his hands. “See this is why I’m having trouble believing you. Huntrix, three-women Idols, managed to over power 10 or so men and still somehow managed to perform to a sold-out show?”
“Well technically only Mira and Zoey overpowered us. Rumi was actually very nice.”
Jung looked at Hwan before taking a deep breath and closing the folder. He crossed his arms and leaned back into his chair. The thing that really bothered him about all this is he could tell Hwan wasn’t lying. But how was he supposed to believe this?
Huntrix, one of, if not thee, most popular Idol group was kidnapped for one day and no one in the whole police department heard about it.
“Okay. Why don’t we just start at the beginning. Tell me exsacly what happened.” Jung said, trying to go into this with an open mind.
Hwan nodded and sat up his hands ready to tell this unusual story.
“I saw her at a convenience store.”
Hwan walked down the street with a heavy sigh. He snuck a quick glance at his pocket notebook; the temp jobs and construction work were not paying the bills. Well, his bills where fine, it was his debt that was crushing him.
He shook his head, coffee. He just needed coffee.
Hwan b-lined for the nearest store. He stood in the refrigerator section longer then necessary. He wasn’t looking for his coffee, not really, he was just wasting time.
“Pardon me.” A woman said.
He took a step back letting her squeeze past him to pick up a few kimbap rolls. Way more then one person could eat by themselves. She must be having a party or something. A huge party judging by the rest of the food in her basket.
He was so focused on the pile of food she was carrying he almost didn’t notice the purple hair behind her hoodie.
In a Sea of black and brown, purple was a noticeable difference.
Of course, it immediately reminded him of the lead singer of Huntrix. No, not just reminded him, it was her. Rumi, Ryu Rumi, leader of Huntrix just walking out in the open.
At first, I just thought it was a really good look alike. Maybe even a fan. But I mean who else would have that much hair.
She walked off to pay, as Hwan shook himself out of his thoughts. It had been years since he even thought about committing a crime, but it was like the gods had placed this right in his lap.
When his daughter was born, he promised that part of his life was behind him. But the debt didn’t stay behind, why should the profit.
Rumi paid and left the store.
Hwan quickly followed, no longer needing the coffee.
He stayed back just far enough so she didn’t notice him. Thankfully she headed down an alleyway with no one around.
This was his chance.
He felt his blood rushing, his breath felt like he was screaming. God, he missed this adrenaline. Why did he ever stop?
Picking up a discarded block of wood, he raised it over his head. One hit and he was good to go. He almost felt bad, if he had properly planned this, he could knock her out painlessly, but he was working with what he had.
She stopped walking, as if she had heard him coming. But he acted as fast as he could. Smashing the wood over her head. She crumbled down, her food scattered everywhere.
As soon as she hit the ground all the adrenaline left Hwan’s body. He quickly pulled out his phone and called up an old Buddy.
Maybe if he had blocked and deleted that number, maybe just maybe he wouldn’t have done this.
And why aren’t your buddies here confessing?
Oh, they’re still in the hospital, they said they would come in once they got discharged.
Right. So, what happened after you assaulted the lead singer of Korea’s most popular Idol group?
Well Buddy gave me directions for a safe house we could keep her until we got the money.
“Well darn. How the hell did you find her?” Buddy asked looking at Rumi.
They had set her in a chair and tied her hands behind her back. She had yet to wake up.
“She found me, asked me to move so she could get something at the store.” Hwan laughed.
Buddy turned to Hwan. “You expect me to believe an Idol just so happened to shop at the same store as you? Wait you expect me to believe an Idol does her own shopping?”
Hwan shrugged. “She’s here ain’t she?”
Buddy turned his attention back to Rumi. “Is it the real her? I mean they do have a concert tonight, could be a fan.”
“What do you want me to do? Wake her up and make her sing for us?”
Buddy sighed. “Not sing for us but I mean if we want money we need to make sure it’s the right girl.”
“Hey?” Hwan said stopping Buddy. “How did you know they had a concert tonight?” Hwan asked.
“You know my kids are obsessed with them.”
“You don’t have kids.”
“Is this 20 questions or a kidnapping?” Buddy snapped.
Hwan held up his hands. “Just asking.”
Buddy moved close to Rumi and gently slapped her cheek.
Rumi grumbled and tried to move away from his slaps. “Zoey stop.” She mumbled before opening her eyes. “Oh, sorry I thought you were someone else.” She said.
She didn’t panic?
Not even a little.
Rumi looked around trying to get her baring. She tried to stand up only to be held in place by the ropes around her hands. She then looked up at the two men and asked. “Is this a kidnapping?”
The men looked at each other before Buddy nodded. “Yup.”
Rumi nodded as if she just asked what time it was. Her eyes suddenly lit up as she leaned forward in the chair. “Can we take a selfie?” she asked.
Buddy opened his mouth to yell at her only for her words to finally register in his mind. “What?” He asked.
“Oh yeah. Your faces wouldn’t be covered. Oh, do you guys have masks or something. We could take the picture like that.” She said.
Buddy and Hwan shared a confused look. Hwan turned to Rumi, who was sitting calmly like she was waiting for her food at a restaurant and not being held for ransom.
“Do you understand what is happening right now?” Hwan asked.
Rumi nodded. “I’m being held for ransom money, right? Did you already call my manager? I hope not I wouldn’t want him to worry.
Buddy shook his head. He didn’t care about the money, he promised himself he was never going to kidnap another Idol.
“You should be worried right now.” Buddy said almost yelling.
Rumi looked confused before smiling. “Me? Oh no I’ll be fine. But about that photo I know it’s odd, but it is my first kidnapping and Zoey wouldn’t forgive me if I didn’t get a souvenir.”
Buddy turned to Hwan. “Is she serious?”
Hwan shrugged. “It is her first kidnapping, maybe she doesn’t know how to act.”
“If you take the photo. I’ll sign something.” Rumi said as if this was a simple trade. “I’m sure you could sell it and at least make a little money out of this.”
Does she know how much her autographs sell for?
Do you?
Just continue the story.
“Oh, I have the perfect thing.” Hwan said pulling out his wallet and slipping out a photo of his daughter. For her 10th birthday he had bought her an official Huntrix light stick and took her to the pop-up store, where he took the photo of her in front of a Huntrix poster as she proudly held up her light stick.
“Aww, so cute.” Rumi cooed, seeing the photo. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a pen. “Who should I make it out to?”
“Her name is Sophie.”
“So cute.”
Wait, how did she?
Hell, if I know.
Rumi signed the photo and wrote a little note to Sophie with a smiley face just above it.
“Now the selfie?” She asked.
“Oh yeah.” Hwan said getting close to her. Rumi pulled out her phone and held it up before looking over at Buddy.
“Did you want to get in?” She asked.
Buddy, who had been silent the whole time finally snapped. “What the hell are you doing?” he yelled, pulling Hwan away and turning to Rumi. “And you this isn’t a party! You’re not in charge here. You’re the victim!”
Rumi pouted but suddenly there was a crash from the other room. She looked at Buddy. “Well, this victim’s ride is here.”
As if on cue the door slammed open and Buddy’s face came in contact with a knee. Mira’s knee to be specific.
Before Hwan could blink the back of his legs where kicked out. He dropped to his knees and looked up to see Zoey about to punch him.
“Wait.” Rumi called out. Zoey stopped, her fist still locked and loaded. “He was nice, and his daughter’s a fan.”
“Oh sorry.” Zoey said softly patting his shoulders.
“A fan?” Mira asked taking a break from kicking Buddy’s ass. “Did you offer to sign something?” she asked. Hwan had heard the same tone when his wife was teaching Sophie to say thank you to people.
“Yes, I did. Oh, you two should also sign it.” Rumi said.
They all turned to Hwan.
He slowly pulled out the photo.
It was like a switch was flipped, the two angry ass kickers suddenly changed into gushing girls at the photo.
“So cute.” Zoey cooed
“Sophie? Such a pretty name.” Mira smiled.
The two signed it before handing it back to Hwan, who had his hands up like he was being held at Gun point. He carefully took the photo and bowed.
“Alright, lets go. We still have to carb-load.” Mira said shoving her hands in her pockets.
“Aw I must have dropped the stuff.” Rumi sighed.
Hwan cleared his throat to get their attention. “Its um over there.” He said pointing at a corner.
“See I told you our fans where nice.” Zoey said rushing to pick up the bags. “So RuRu how was your first kidnapping?” she asked.
“Oh Right.” Rumi said rushing to Hwan, who was still on his knees, and held out her phone. “Smile.” She said. Hwan smiled automatically. Rumi took the picture and nodded at it. “Looks good. Okay we can go.” She said as they headed to the door.
Hwan dropped to his hands. All of this just because he wanted money.
“Oh.” Rumi said snapping him back up. “Pleas turn yourself in.” She said before closing the door behind her.
Jung massaged his eyelids. “How?” He started before letting out a heavy sigh. “How did the others know where you were?” He asked.
“I don’t know maybe they have trackers in the neck.” Hwan answered.
“Like dogs?”
“Yeah, those Idol managers are crazy when it comes to stuff like that.”
Jung let out another sigh. This was way over his pay grade. “Show me the photo.” He said.
“What?” Hwan asked.
“The photo they signed. Show me the proof.”
Hwan patted his pockets but didn’t pull anything out. “I…I gave it to my daughter.”
“Alright.” Jung snapped shutting the folder. “I’m going to file this under a nuisance call. Please leave and don’t come back.”
“What?” Hwan asked. “But kidnapping is a crime.”
“And where is the victim?” Jung asked standing up.
“Um well I mean.” Hwan tried.
Jung opened the door and waved him out. “Please just leave.”
Hwan shut his mouth and slowly walked out. As he walked down the hall, he kept looking back every so often wondering if they really were letting him go.
“What was that about?” Another detective asked.
Jung sighed and shoved the folder in to his hands. “Just a crazy fan.”
Hwan stepped out of the station, confused but happy. He was ready to pay for his crimes but if he didn’t have to that was also okay, right?
His phone buzzed twice letting him know he had two new messages. He pulled out his phone. The first one was from Buddy, it was a photo of a get well soon card signed by none other then Rumi, Mira, and Zoey.
The second was from an unknown number, a photo of him and Rumi smiling, the selfie Rumi had taken yesterday.
Hwan sighed, sure now he had proof. He stretched his neck and headed off.
He needed a coffee.
