The fluorescent lights of the university hallway hummed a discordant tune. The dimly lit corridors seemed to stretch on forever, the eerie silence a constant reminder of the desperation that had taken hold of its trapped students. Seeking refuge from the oppressive atmosphere that hung over the university like a shroud sat two of the remaining 12 students together in one of their assigned bedrooms. Ito Souta and Lee Mirye had found solace in each other's company, engaged in a casual conversation.
"I had the most boring day," Lee said. "Just wandering the empty corridors, trying to make sense of everything."
"The tedium of our existence is a poignant reminder of the futility of our endeavors. We are but pawns in a game we do not fully comprehend, our actions dictated by the whims of fate." Ito's responded, laced with their characteristic pretentiousness.
Lee raised an eyebrow, accustomed to Ito's grandiose language. "You always know how to make the ordinary sound so...philosophical, Ito."
Ito's smile was enigmatic. "One must find meaning in the mundane, right?"
Their conversation continued from there and topics changed from time to time. From wondering what meal plan Gotou was planning for the day to what new songs Himizu will be composing to talking about how shocking that Ashigaka made it this far in the game. But as they spoke, Ito's words took a darker turn, their tone tinged with a morbid curiosity.
"You know, Lee, I've always been fascinated by the concept of mortality. The finality of it, the way it can be...captured, for lack of a better term. I would have loved to film one of the executions, to preserve the moment of transition from life to death."
Lee's expression turned guarded, their eyes narrowing slightly as they processed Ito's words. "What do you mean? Why would you want to film something like that?"
Ito's shrug was nonchalant, but their eyes gleamed with an intensity that made Lee's skin prickle. "It's just a fascination with the human condition, I suppose. The way we respond to death, the way it affects us...it's all so...intriguing. And to capture that on film, to preserve the emotions and the reactions...it would be a unique perspective, don't you think?"
Lee's response was measured, their tone cautious. "I'm not sure I understand, Ito. It sounds...morbid. And what about the people involved? Don't you think it would be disrespectful to film something like that without their consent?"
Ito's laughter was low and husky, their words dripping with an unsettling sincerity. "Oh, Lee, you're so caught up in the ethics of it all. But what about the artistry? The beauty of capturing a moment that can never be repeated? It's not about disrespect; it's about preserving a moment in time, a moment that says something profound about human nature."
Lee's unease grew, their mind racing with the implications of Ito's words.
"Ito, I...I don't know if I agree with you," Lee said finally, their voice barely above a whisper. "It just seems so...wrong. And what about the people who would be affected by it? The families, the friends...it's not just about the person who's dying; it's about everyone who's left behind."
Ito's expression turned enigmatic, their eyes glinting with a knowing light. "Ah, Lee, you're so...predictable. But that's what makes you so...fascinating. You're a conundrum, a puzzle I'm still trying to solve."
The air in the room seemed to vibrate with tension, the silence between them thick with unspoken meanings. Lee's heart was racing, their mind reeling with the implications of Ito's words.
"Ito, please...don't share this conversation with anyone, okay?" Lee asked, their voice barely above a whisper.
Ito's smile was a thin, mirthless line. "Of course, Lee. This stays just between you and me. For now, at least."
The silence that followed was oppressive, the weight of their conversation hanging in the air like a challenge. But as they sat there, surrounded by the eerie silence of the university, Lee knew that they had to say something.
With a forced smile, Lee changed the subject, steering the conversation back to safer waters. "So, Ito, have you heard anything about the our kidnappers plans for us? Do you think they'll ever go easy on us?"
Ito's response was immediate, their words a welcome distraction from the darkness that had threatened to consume them. "I've haven't had the slightest ideas, of course it could happen. But I think it's all just speculation at this point. We'll just have to wait and see, I suppose."
As they spoke, the tension in the room began to dissipate, retreating back to a conversation turned to more mundane topics. But Lee couldn't shake the feeling that Ito's words had left them with.
