Chapter Text

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.

A loud, ringing sound awoke a girl who was unknowingly drooling in her sleep. What greeted her was a black ceiling instead of the old dorms' white one. She flipped to her left and grabbed her charging phone on her nightstand. She eyed the snooze button for her alarm before pressing it and setting it back down. She turned over and tried to drift back to dreamland. However, instead of going back to dreamland, another girl with brunette hair and pink striped Victoria's Secret pajamas barged into her room loudly and tackled her on her bed.

“Funneh, Funneh! Wake up! It’s our first day of school!” The girl said excitedly, shaking Funneh. The two agreed to set their alarms simultaneously, but waking up at 7:00 am wasn’t the most fun thing to do for Funneh.

“Ugh…” Funneh covered her eyes as the brunette girl got up to turn on her lights. She ran her hand through her dyed blue hair. “Five more minutes, Gold…”

“No can do, Funneh. You can use the bathroom first since I take longer, while I make breakfast.” Gold said, dragging Funneh's arm.

Ever since the first day of Sophomore year, Gold vowed to never be late to class again and save the ice cream truck for after school. Especially since they weren’t paying for any dorm expenses, they had to prove they made the right choice of accepting them as foreign exchange students. “Ugh… Fine!” Funneh reluctantly got out of her warm, cozy covers. The chilly air gave her goosebumps from the contrasting temperature. She paused briefly at the mention of Gold cooking breakfast.

“Gold, you don’t need to make breakfast.”

“Hm, why?”

“Uh…” Funneh tried her best to make up an excuse, “Since it’s the first day of school, we should focus on getting ready, right? I’ll just order some breakfast from Starbucks on my phone.” Funneh knew Gold wasn’t an excellent cook; it was either weird, healthy recipes or burnt food.

Gold tapped her cheek, “Hm… I guess you’re right! On a day like this, I need to focus on how I look! First impressions matter tons. Oh, but let’s order on my phone, I need those points.” She left for her room, leaving Funneh’s door open.

“You add your stuff first! I’ll add mine when I’m done.” Funneh yelled, stretching.

She put on her shark slippers and walked to the bathroom. Both Funneh and Gold liked to listen to music in the bathroom, so they installed a mini waterproof speaker that was connected to their phone by Bluetooth. Funneh mentally cursed at herself and went back to her bedroom to unplug her phone and play music. She opened Spotify and pressed an auto-generated playlist that was recommended to her, and left her phone on top of the speaker.

After 15 minutes, she finished up and stopped her music. Funneh grabbed her phone and left the bathroom. “Gold, I’m done!” she yelled while walking to her room.

“Kay!” Gold said back, coming out of her room. “I already added my stuff to the cart, so you just add yours and pay.” She handed the phone to Funneh, skipping to the bathroom.

Funneh was about to stop her, but the door was already closed. She sighed before opening her Spotify and picking Gold’s shower playlist, which she could slightly hear from her bedroom. She swiped to the Starbucks app and quickly chose a random breakfast sandwich along with a tall cold brew. She paid and soon got a notification saying their order would be ready in 15 minutes. Since Gold would take longer than that, she could walk over while waiting. Funneh took Gold’s phone and left it next to her own phone on her bed.

Funneh opened her closet, where in front of all of her random jackets, shirts, and pants, was the outfit Gold and she had settled on last night. A white tube top, dark blue jorts, a baggy red short-sleeved button-up that would remain unbuttoned, and black Adidas campuses. Because of the rising temperature, she wouldn’t be able to wear any hoodies for a while, which sucked. Gold told her that the red button-up would be a nice contrast against her blue hair, which Funneh actually agreed on once she put it on. She quickly tied a low, messy bun and put on the only makeup she wore, which was mascara. Gold tried countless times to encourage her to wear makeup, but Funneh thought it was a hassle. Mascara only took a few swipes anyway, and Gold picked one that would dry quickly so she wouldn’t worry about smudging.

Funneh glanced at Gold’s phone because of a ding, to read that it was 7:35, and that their order was ready. “I'm gonna pick up the food, Gold!” She shouted, grabbing her headphones.

“Okayy!” She shouted back. Funneh left her room door open so Gold could get her phone later, and glanced back for a second. Right now, her dorm wasn’t messy because the two girls hadn’t gotten a chance to unpack, but it was a bit sad to know that it would soon quickly turn unrecognizable from all of Funneh’s junk.

Funneh snatched her keys and left the house. It was quiet, and the sky had a few clouds, but she liked it. There was a slight breeze because it was early morning, making the tall grass sway lightly. The Starbucks was only a few minutes away, but it was the opposite route from their school. She turned left and walked down the sidewalk filled with greenery.

Funneh hadn’t gotten used to the new campus yet. Both the dorms and the school were renovated completely. She wondered how it was done in only 6 months. It was much different than what the old dorms were like. Funneh put on her headphones to listen to music while she walked. On the way to Starbucks, she people-watched. Luckily, near their dorms was a shopping and dining district, so there were people out and about. She passed by a jogger, an old lady, and a woman walking her dog. She arrived at Starbucks before she knew it, opening the glass doors and inhaling the warm scent of coffee. The store was a bit empty since it had just opened not long ago.

Funneh walked to the pickup counter and grabbed the tray of drinks, which read ‘Gold’ on both of the drink labels. The food was next to the tray, but she piled it onto the empty drink holder spots and left, giving the woman at the counter a ‘thank you’.

She was surprised she didn’t see anyone she knew, as a few of her friends also were living in the dorms. When she arrived back at her own, she used her keys to open the door. “Gold, food’s here!” She shouted. Funneh set the tray of food and drinks on their dining table and turned off her headphones, resting them back on her neck. Soon, she heard thumping coming from the stairs, and a half-ready Gold emerged.

“Ooh, thanks girl!” She sat down next to Funneh, grabbing her Grande White Chocolate Mocha and her Apple Croissant. Funneh nodded before grabbing her own things and digging in.

“Aren’t you so excited, Funneh? I hope the new school looks nice.” Gold said with a full mouth. She didn’t have to care about her face too much because she only finished her hair and outfit. She had a fluffy blowout that curled her blonde ends, and wore a cropped blue fitted button-up that accentuated her shoulders and waist, as well as low-rise washed jeans. She wore black Onitsuka Tigers underneath and decorated herself with gold jewelry.

“Hmm, sure,” Funneh replied, more focused on her food. “You almost ready?”

“Umm, give me like, 30 more minutes and then we can go!” Gold smiled. She quickly finished her tart and took her drink with her upstairs as she would work on her makeup. Funneh took her time and ate while scrolling around on her phone. Her lockscreen was a picture of her, Gold, Kyran, and Alec from the beach party they had a few months ago. She unlocked her phone to check her text messages.

Funneh’s eyebrows furrowed as she looked at their messages. She constantly wondered why he wasn’t replying, but she could also just ask when she saw him at school again. Because of the lack of notifications she got this morning, she resorted to TikTok to wait for Gold. After a few TikToks, a round of Subway Surfers, and other cheap mobile games, Gold came down with her makeup done.

“Funneh, let’s go!” Gold chirped, with her pink backpack over her shoulders.

“Oh, let me get my backpack.” Funneh shut off her phone and went upstairs to grab her black backpack. She and Gold now had matching keychains that she got from Canada, the first letter of their name adorned with colored jewels. Of course, Funneh chose blue for herself and got yellow gems for Gold. Funneh also had a blue guitar keychain hanging off the same zipper. Gold, on the other hand, had a white plush rabbit with her golden G keychain. The girls took the initiative to clear out their backpacks and organize everything the day before, so now Funneh could actually tell what was in her bag. She snatched the strawberry-scented tinted lip balm Gold gave her from her nightstand, stuffed her phone in her back pocket, and went downstairs to grab her keys.

“Ready, Gold?” Funneh smirked.

“Totally!” Gold replied, also grabbing her keys. They turned to their right to walk to school. The view was new; there were lots of trees, flowers, and grass, and they looked at other people’s dorms as well. The two girls chatted as they walked. Soon, they arrived at the new Yandere High School. Instead of terracotta walls with accents of blue and white, it was now a smooth, dark, muted blue with hints of white, which was a bit easier on the eyes. The halls were bustling with students, old and new, excited and tired. In front of the two girls were white, polished stairs and a big Yandere High symbol on the wall.

“First day of school again! Hopefully our junior year won't be such a crazy ride,” Funneh exclaimed to Gold.

“Yep! I want this year to be as chill as possible… That's why I picked tons of option classes!” Gold said proudly with glimmering eyes.

Funneh's eyes widened, “YOU WHAT?! Go fix your schedule right now. How are you supposed to graduate with only option classes?!”

Gold was struck with realization, “Oh my god! You’re right! To the office!” She bolted past Funneh to the staff hallway. Funneh sighed, taking out her new schedule, which she crumpled into her backpack. “Locker 107…” She muttered to herself as she walked away.  After wandering around, Funneh finally found her locker. But it wasn’t in the best place ever.

“Please no… This can’t be my locker! Right beside the restrooms? Why me? What did I do to deserve this?!” It was as if this was out of spite, but Funneh heard one of the toilets flush behind her as a boy walked out of the bathroom.

A loud alarm rang across the school, making Funneh look up at the intercoms, “All Juniors and Seniors must report to the main gym! Our school year announcement will be starting soon.”

When Funneh entered the gymnasium, the bleachers were already half-filled. She looked around for anyone she knew, and a familiar brunette caught her eye. “Hey Funneh! Over here!” Gold shouted while waving. Funneh made her way over to Gold, who had an empty seat for her, and sat down.

The microphone peaked, making everyone cover their ears. “Welcome to Yandere High! I’m your new principal, Principal Desu. Your old principal, Mr. Falkhorn, has retired over the long summer break.” Both Principal Desu and the Fox mascot were waving to the crowd. “Moving on to a brighter topic, don’t you love the new school renovations we made? The school board really outdid this one!” She took a breath, “Take a look, everyone, around you. What do you see? That's right, all of you are wearing outfits that probably don’t represent Yandere High. Since the school board has heavily funded the school, you will all now need to wear school uniforms!” She stepped down from the podium onto the stage, “Not only do school uniforms look classy, but it also prevents bullying. Your uniforms will be sent in the mail to your homes around this week.”

A girl from the audience raised her hand, “Question!” She dragged out the end of her sentence almost snobbishly, “What if we don’t wanna wear the dumb uniforms?”

“Students who fail to dress appropriately will receive detention for disobeying Yandere High’s code of conduct. If you continue so forth, you will get suspended.”

The bell rang, and students started to get up. “Well, that's the bell! Off to your first block. And remember, if you ever need any help or free consultation, head to the students' association.” Principal Desu waved to the students as mobs tried to get through the doors. Gold and Funneh headed to their first class together, which was English. They sat next to each other and chatted while waiting for the teacher.

Funneh turned to her left, “Gold, isn’t it great to be back at school?”

“Yeah, I can’t believe I’m saying it, but I kinda missed school.” Gold rested her hands on her desk.

Funneh chuckled, “Did you notice that this room is covered in tacos…?” The two girls looked around the room, the walls full of taco decorations, taco posters, and even framed tacos?

“What type of classroom is this?” Funneh muttered. Gold pulled out a bag of Cheezo Puffs from her backpack. “I don’t know, but I think I’m gonna eat these Cheezos. You want some?”

“You brought chips to class? Put them away! What happens if the teacher sees it?”

“But I barely ate breakfast, so I bought this from the vending machine on the way in… I don’t think they’ll mind?”

“We didn’t have any time to set up our dorms either…” Funneh sighed, looking at the blackboard in front of the class.

Gold reached out the bag of chips to Funneh. “Yeah, so do you want any or are you good?”

Funneh laughed, “No, I don't want any Cheezos.”

“Fine, I’ll just eat it myself.” Gold opened the bag and started eating her chips. The crunching filled their silence.

Funneh turned, “Hey, do you think we have a female or male teacher?”

“I don’t know, but they’re taking forever,” Gold said while eating, savoring the cheesy flavor in her mouth as Funneh sighed. “I thought teachers weren’t supposed to be late on their first day. Like, students are late, not teachers.”

“Well, if they don’t come in 15 minutes, do we get to leave?”

Gold gasped, “I hope so!”
