“No, no, no, no! AGH damnit! Stupid creeper!” Bart yelled into his mich as a creeper blew up right behind him in his minecraft game.
“Ahahahaha! Did you die again?” the voice of his friend Red_Robin#3 came through as everyone else laughed in the background.
“Shut up Rob, leave me alone.” Bart mumbled back as he respawned in his base.
“Ah come on Flash, that's like your 20th time and it’s only been forty minutes.” his best friend azul_beetle, chuckled as his avatar walked up to Barts and handed him a spare stone sword and food.
“Always right on time Bee, you know me so well.” Bart giggled as the two moved towards where Bart had been when he died to pick up his things.
“Well yea, he has a full chest of food and swords just for this.” the light voice of their friend ✨Superbgirl✨ called out through the mics, which started yet another round of laughter amongst everyone but azul_beetle.
“Do you really Bee?” Bart gasped out.
“Yes.” came the one word reply from azul_beetle and everyone but him burst out laughing again. Bart was pulled out of his video game world by a knock at his door, followed by his grandma coming into his room.
“Bart, it’s time for bed, shut off the game please.” she said.
“Ok!” Bart responded back and she left the room.
“Sorry guys, I gotta go.” Bart said as he logged off the game.
“Cya! You’ll be on tomorrow right?” BEAST called through the mics.
“Same time, same place.” Bart said with a laugh as he logged off the discord chat to the chorus of goodbyes. Bart sighed, the only part of his life that hadn’t completely changed with his families move, the near daily minecraft games and calls with his team. He had known them for about five years, after meeting in an online chat for players, and despite the fact that the chat had died out three years ago, him and the other five friends had remained in contact, and continued playing together, quickly becoming friends. He only wished it was that easy to make friends in real life. People tended to stay away from him as he was “Too much”. He’d wished he could meet his online friends in person. They were the first people to not completely shy away from his sometimes over the top personality, mostly because they were the same way. They were his best friends and he trusted them with nearly everything, despite not even knowing any of their real names. azul_beetle had been the first person he told about the move and how upset he was. They were the first people he came out to. An insane amount of trust to put into people he’d never met in person or shared real names with. Bart chuckled at the thought as he put on pjs and climbed into bed after turning off the lights. Bart closed his eyes and sighed, thinking about his first day of junior year at his new school tomorrow.
A rough shaking and the voice of his “cousin” Wally, woke Bart as he groggily sat up
“Get up short stack, I gotta take you to school.” Wally told him as he stepped back from Barts’ bed.
“Why you?” Bart asked, rubbing his eyes and pushing off the covers of his bed.
“Well I gotta go there anyway for work, so may as well save aunt Iris the trip.” Wally said he was the chemistry teacher at his new school and part of the reason his grandparents moved him.
“So get up and get ready.” he said as he walked out the door. Bart yawned and rolled out of bed, dragging himself over to his dresser and pulling out blue jeans and a white long sleeve shirt with a red short sleeve shirt to wear over it. Deciding it wasn't worth running a brush through his disaster hair, he grabbed a red and yellow hat off his floor and put it on. He grabbed his bad, slung it over one shoulder and left his room into the kitchen and mud room. He put his shoes on and Wally tossed him a granola bar and a small bottle of milk before ushering him out the door. Bart was silent the whole drive to the school, fiddling with a fidget cube as Wally played his music loudly, horribly singing along.
The car came to a screeching halt and Barts eyes snapped open as Wally started getting out, and Bart clumsily followed, stumbling out of the car then jogging to catch up to Wally as he walked into the school.
“I’ll walk you up to the office, but then I need to go to my classroom so you’ll be on your own after that alright.” Wally told him, leading him up the stairs. Bart only nodded, staring at his shoes
“Come in kid, liven up, you’ll be fine, and I’ll be the building. If you want you can come eat lunch in my room alright.” Bart nodded again as they walked through the double doors of the office.
“Oh, good morning Wally. Do you need something?” the lady behind one of the desks in the office greeted when they walked in.
“That I do Ms.Jones. This here is my cousin Bart Allen, and he is in need of his new schedule for the year.” Wally said smoothly, walking up to the desk while Bart hung back by the doors.
“Oh perfect, I have that for you right here.” the lady, Ms.Jones, said as she pulled out a sheet of paper from a stack on her desk, handing it to Wally.
“Thank you very much, have a good day.” Wallet said with a smile turning around back to Bart.
“Alright here you go kid, your first class is in the english hall, just one down from the science hall, so lets go.” Wally said, leading Bart out and handing him the paper. Bart looked over the paper in his hands, taking in the schedule: creative writing, physics, lunch, band, fitness and finally art 2.
“Not bad.” Bart thought as they walked down the hall. He could feel eyes on him and it made him shrink into himself.
“Ok this is my hall, so I’ll see ya at lunch. Go down that hall, and you’ll find the room for your first class. Have a good day alright.” Wally says as they stop in front of one hall.
“Ok, thanks Wally.” Bart said and Wally gave him a nod and walked down the hall and Bart turned around to continue on his way to the room.
Finally it was lunch time, good thing too because Bart was starving and even better, he wouldn’t have to eat alone in Wally's room because he had made a friend in his english class who invited him to sit with him and his friends.
“Baaaaaaart!” speak of the devil.
“Wassup dude, you ready for lunch.” Barts new friend Garfeild, Gar for short, came running up slinging an arm around Barts shoulder as he led them to the cafeteria.
“Man I am starving, so yea very ready for lunch.” Bart laughed.
“Don’t get your hopes up too much, cafeteria food here is ass.” Gar told him with a sigh.
“Good thing my grandma is a real good cook then.” Bart said, showing off his packed lunch box.
“Aw man, lucky.” Gar whined as they walked into the cafeteria.
“Over this way, my friends and I sit over here.” Gar said, leading Bart over to a table where a girl with bright blonde hair was animatedly talking to a tall boy with dark brown hair who didn't really seem to be listening.
“Guys this is my new friend Bart, Bart this is Cassie-” the blonde girl waved and smiled. “And this is Jaime.” the boy gave nothing more than a curt nod.
“Hi, I’m Bart, I’m new.” Bart smiled and waved.
“Great you guys get to know each other, I’m gonna go get my own lunch.” Garfield said before he disappeared into the lunch line.
“So Bart, what brought your family here?” Cassie asked as Bart took the empty seat next to Jaime, who still had yet to look up from his food.
“My cousin got a job here last year as a chemistry teacher and my grandparents didn’t like being too far away from him.” Bart told her, as he opened his own lunch and began to eat.
“Oh no way, you’re related to Mr.West, we had him earlier, he was so much fun.”
“Yup, that's him, he’s my grandmas’ nephew so I’ve basically grown up with him like a brother.” Bart explained with a laugh.
“Great you’re related to the crazed redhead with access to chemicals, can’t wait to see what you’re like.” Jaime finally spoke up, rolling his eyes.
“And what the hell is that supposed to mean? Wally is incredibly smart and very good at chemistry.”
“Pft, yea he sure seems like it.” Jaime laughed sarcastically.
“Jaime! What the hell was that for?” Cassie asked angrily.
“Whatever.” Jaime mumbled before quietly standing up and leaving the two alone.
“Sorry Bart, he’s not normally like that, I dunno what’s gotten into him just give him time.” Cassie told him.
So Bart did. For three months, but nothing changed, Jaime constantly gave him the cold shoulder, no matter what Bart tried. Luckily Bart did make a few other friends than Garfeild and Cassie so he felt much less awkward at lunch sitting with one person who clearly did not like him for seemingly no reason. Despite this Bart, ever the people pleaser he was, still really wanted Jaime to like him and so had turned to his online friends about the problem.
“I just don’t get it, like I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong to him, I’d never even met him before now!” Bart exclaimed into his mic as he played minecraft with ✨Superbgirl✨ and Red_Robin#3. The other three being too busy that night to join them.
“I dunno man, sounds like you guys just clash, maybe hang out with other friends you were talking about more.” Red_Robin#3 told him. “Does anybody have any spare iron?” ✨Superbgirl✨s’ voice came through his headset next.
“I have some Rob, just give me a minute, and Flash you shouldn’t worry about it, it just doesn’t sound like he’s very nice, I mean he said…” she trailed off before starting again, sounding confused and questioning. “He said something about your cousin right?”
“Yup.”
“Yea that’s what I thought…. Anyways don’t give it much thought it’s his loss right.” she said.
“I guess.” Bart sighed.
“Yea man, doesn't sound like he’s very fun anyway.” Red_Robin#3 laughed through the coms. Bart laughed and the night continued on as they played. Across town from Bart, in her room Cassie played as ✨Superbgirl✨ with her online friends but something one had said stuck with her in an odd way. Then she recalled her and Jaimes first time meeting Bart in the cafeteria and the words clicked in her mind. She quickly messaged Garfield about her discovery even though she knew he wouldn’t see it for a while. Cassie, Garfield and Jaime had all known each other in person since middle school. It had been Garfield that told them both about the discord server with lots of other people which was how they had met the other three a few years later before branching out as their own group three years before when the bigger server had become dead and all six of them became close. Out of a lack of care and maybe safety, nobody had told anyone what their real names or towns they lived in, so only Cassie, Garfield and Jaime knew each other in real life. Until now, when Cassie managed to piece everything together from Barts story and realized that the new kid Jaime had been ignoring and been mean to for the past three months, was the same boy he’d had a die hard crush on for over a year.
And boy was Jaime gonna kick himself for that if someone didn’t intervene fast.
As soon as Cassie heard back from Garfeild she set up a time to meet the next day with him as well as Red_Robin#3 and Cloneboy to run some immediate damage control.
“Alright what's going on that made you call this urgent meeting” Cloneboy asked the moment Cassie logged onto the call.
“Ok so we all know Flashs recent problem with a guy at his new school?” the others made noises of acknowledgement.
“Well last night he said something that made me realize he’s a new kid at mine BEASTS school….and the guy he’s been talking about is azul.” Cassie told them. Immediate laughter was heard from everyone else. Red_Robin#3s voice broke through
“You’ve got to be kidding me.” he said with a chuckle.
“Nope, I think I can confirm with her story, they match up.” Garfields voice said.
“Those two have had a crush on each other forever! Beetle is going to be so upset with himself when he finds out.” Cloneboy spoke up.
“Exactly why I called everyone here, we have to run damage control stat.” Cassie told them.
“Well what the hell can we do? Out their identities to each other before it get worse?” Gar asked.
“Well maybe..” Red_Robin#3 trailed off.
“I was one hundred percent kidding!”
The next day at lunch Bart walked into the cafeteria and was immediately flagged down by Cassie, frantically waving him over, so he sighed and made his way over to the table.
“Hi Bart.” Cassie said excitedly as he sat down next to Garfield, who smiled at him.
“Hey guys.” Bart responded.
“So I’ve heard you mention before you like playing video games, I’ve been meaning to ask what kind of games?” Cassie casually started.
“Oh well I’ve played a lot of games but right now I’m super into minecraft, I actually have a few online friends I play with, we met through a discord server.” Bart said with a chuckle.
“No way man, us too, Cassie, Jaime and I love to play that game, maybe we can play later, what's your at?” Garfield asked excitedly, both him and Cassie looking at Bart expectantly, while Jaime looked mildly interested in the conversation, which was a first.
“Oh it’s LightningFlash, and yea I’d love to play together.” Jaime choked and started coughing on his lunch as the others looked at him.
“You’re LightningFlash?” Jaime said when he’d stopped coughing a look of panic in his eyes.
“That is what I just said.” Bart said with an eye roll, expecting some mean comment to follow from Jaime.
“You’re not gonna believe this but I’m ✨Superbgirl✨ and Gar is BEAST!” Cassi said excitedly, a hint of mischief in her eyes.
“No way, thats so cool.” Bart said, laughing a little.
“Yea and Jaime is azul_Beetle.” Gar said, joining in Bart's laughter. Bart froze at hearing that.
“H-He’s what?” he asked with a confused expression, looking at Jaime, who was sheepishly looking down at the table.
“Uhh..I’m azul_Beetle.” Jaime said quietly, still not looking up.
“I’m sorry, I need to go.” he mumbled, grabbing his lunch and leaving Cassie, Garfield, and Bart at the table.
“It was him the whole time.” Bart murmured quietly, very upset. Cassie and Bart nodded silently.
The rest of lunch was quiet which luckily wasn’t very long and the three parted ways for the rest of the day, but Bart couldn’t stop thinking about Jaime and how the guy he’d been crushing on for years was the same guy who’d been a total jerkwad the past three months.
At the end of the day Bart sat on the steps, waiting for Wally, and quietly contemplating alone before he heard someone sit next to him. He looked over to see a sad looking Jaime staring straight ahead, so he turned his head forward.
“I’m sorry!” Bart quickly turned his head to look at Jaie as he spoke.
“I know it’s no excuse, but I hadn’t been having a good day and after that I was too afraid that you’d hate me for what I said, so I just ignored you, which I realized was so dumb of me, so, so, so dumb, and I’m really sorry.” Jaime said looking over at Bart as he finished speaking.
“More over the moment I saw you in person you were the cutest person I’d ever seen and that scared me because I was terrified of what that meant about out online relationship because I’d been crushing on the online version of you for years without ever meeting you, so I just thought if I was a jerk, nothing would change and I could keep what I had with the online friend, and your presence would eventually no longer bother me. Apparently I am very wrong and very dumb.” Jaime said, with a sad laugh at the end.
“Think you can give me a chance, for real this time.” he asked as Bart stared at him. Bart smiled after a moment, stood up and held a hand to help Jaime up, only to pull him into a hug as soon as he was standing.
“It’s impossible to stay mad at you for anything.” Bart said with a laugh as a tear rolled down his cheeks as he pulled away slightly to look up at Jaime. Jaime chuckled and pulled Bart back into a tight hug.
“Thank you.” Jaime whispered into Barts ear.
“Always.”
