All is Fair in Love and War

Summary:

Work Text:

Rin didn’t think she could’ve been any happier than she was now.

In the back of her mind, she knew that fate had the tendency to prove her wrong, and there would surely come a time where she’d be even happier, inevitably followed by a period of time where sadness would take over yet again. Such was the circle of life. Nothing was guaranteed, least of all peace.

But such somber reflections were far, far away right now.

Especially now that her mind was delightfully blank, as though someone had stuffed cotton between her ears, and her muscles were pleasantly sore.

She wore no clothes, those had been discarded in the heat of the moment the night before, and she laid there on the forest ground, nude as the day she was born, but she wasn’t feeling cold.

How could she be, when she was surrounded by a very fluffy, very alive pelt that belonged to an equally nude but much more composed demon reclining beside her?

Though, if he knew of her revolving thoughts about life’s inevitable cycles of joy and grief, he would’ve no doubt scoffed. A being such as himself did not surrender to uncertainty, and he’d be quick to remind her that he had both the means and the authority to ensure she never knew sorrow again, fate be damned.

He was, after all, a warrior to his core.

But unlike humans, Lord Sesshomaru’s noble birth and supernatural origin lent him an unmatched confidence and rightful entitlement.

He was ruthless with his ambition, unapologetic with his avarice, and that particular practice of his really did translate into every aspect of his life.

Rin glanced down on her naked skin.

Now that the sun had begun to rise as the early morning hours approached, she could see those marks he left the night before. So long had they been passionately intertwined with each other that she had fallen asleep from exhaustion at some point, and only woke when the birds began to rouse her with their morning songs.

She could see the bruises clearly now, blooming along her hips and thighs, darker and sorer where he gripped tighter. Some of them throbbed as she shifted, others were little more than discoloration.

Lord Sesshomaru never left any lasting marks, nor did he ever truly hurt her, even in the midst of fervent passion and heat, but these bruises would stay with her for at least a little while, and be reminders of his love, even when he was gone.

The thought made her smile.

“I look like I’ve been fighting in a war,” Rin joked with a small laugh as she traced those marks with her finger.

Her voice was still rough from sleep, her hair was probably a mess, but she couldn’t bring herself to care about these things, not when things were so nice and serene.

Lord Sesshomaru didn’t say anything at first, but when his gaze slid over to her, Rin felt the warmth of those twin suns, the gold of his predator’s stare. His smugness was quite palpable as he watched her examine those marks and bruises she bore from the night before.

He reached out, and Rin’s own hand stilled as he grazed a single clawed finger over her elbow and up her arm, leaving goosebumps in the wake of his exhilarating touch.

“A war?” he asked, and Rin noticed with delight that his voice was equally husky, which meant he had probably also slept alongside her.

“Who was the winner?”

“Me, of course!” she exclaimed, grinning as he continued to gently caress her arm.

And to her, it really felt like a triumph. There was nothing shameful about it, he’d dissuaded her of such ridiculous thoughts long ago. Rin loved Lord Sesshomaru with all her heart, and she was proud to bear these marks, fleeting as they were.

She wouldn’t show them off, no respectable lady did so, and besides, what Rin did with her demon husband in their own private time was in no way something to be announced to the public.

But still, underneath her clothing, she’d wear those marks proudly and be reminded each and every time, that no matter which distance separated them when he roamed distant lands and she was still living in the same village, Lord Sesshomaru always made sure to lay his claim on her, over and over again.

Sesshomaru hummed low in his throat.

“I agree,” he said at last. “Your weapons are formidable. They disarm me every time.”

Rin sucked in a sharp breath as his finger strayed upward, pausing at her collarbone before drifting lower to shamelessly stroke the valley between her breasts. The place he so often pressed his own nose against.

Blood rushed to her face, and she twisted her torso away from both his heated stare and his touch.

“My Lord, you embarrass me,” she whined through the smile that betrayed her excitement.

Luckily, he took mercy on her and decided not to tease Rin for so obviously lying through her teeth. Instead, he let go of her and turned his head to stare into the distance again, but underneath Rin, his fur shifted, drawing her even closer to him as they rested against a tree.

She adored mornings like this, when they both were languid and at ease, when no responsibilities hurried them along or apart. Blissfully claimed and happy as she was, Rin let her own eyes selfishly wander over the handsome demon lord sat beside her.

Lord Sesshomaru was truly so devastatingly beautiful, and not for the first time, Rin was amazed at the knowledge that it was her who could provide him with just as much happiness and pleasure as he gave her.

If only she too could leave him with marks that would remind him of their nightly love…

She stared at the smooth expanse of his naked chest, probably longer than what was considered courteous, but Lord Sesshomaru didn’t seem to mind. Her eyes roved over his strong arms and his shoulders, up to his neck. Unlike her, he had nothing to show as proof that their passionate night had even happened.

Even though Rin distinctly remembered clinging and clawing at him whenever he pushed into her with more vigor. At one point, she had even pressed her mouth to his shoulder and bit down hard to muffle the sounds of her moans and wails.

But looking at that same spot in the morning light, Lord Sesshomaru carried neither a scratch nor a bruise. There was absolutely nothing to remind him of Rin when they were apart.

“My Lord, how come I never leave any bruises on you?”

As soon as the blunt words left her mouth, Rin flinched, and heat rushed to her face. But once again, Lord Sesshomaru took no offense to her nonsensical ramblings and instead turned his head to look down at her with a brow lifted in surprise.

“You wish to leave a mark on me?” he asked.

Rin pressed her lips together, then nodded.

“A battle isn’t won without scars to show for it!” she grinned, hoping this metaphor she came up with on the spot was to his liking.

She, for one, found it terribly clever. And judging by the soft exhale of amusement that followed from him, he liked it too. That simple acknowledgement made Rin’s stomach flutter.

Sesshomaru extended his hand then, holding the fleshy part of his palm right underneath his thumb up to her mouth in invitation.

“Go on, leave your mark on me.”

Her head swam at the implication, and she blinked rapidly.

My–my lord,” she stammered, staring at his hand, “you want me to… bite you? Just like that?”

“You said it yourself: Victory is proven by scars. So, lay your claim on me,” he replied, casually shrugging.

Throughout all their time together, Rin had long since learned that beneath Lord Sesshomaru’s stoicism lay a dry, teasing humor that he especially liked to taunt and challenge her with – not unlike a particularly playful dog that liked to prod and nose at its master.

That apt comparison made her flush even deeper.

Rin decided to accept his challenge and leaned forward to bite down on the offered palm. There was no way she’d be able to draw blood, but she bit down hard enough to leave shallow indents with her teeth. Nevertheless, without the fevered heat of passion to lose oneself in, it was hard to give it the necessary force.

That feral instinct to claim only ever clawed its way into her mind when they were in the midst of their passion. It couldn’t be recreated or called upon during a peaceful morning like this one.

Frankly, the attempt simply felt too ridiculous now.

Rin pulled back after her half-hearted attempt at marking Sesshomaru and predictably, those little indents where her teeth had been, faded almost instantly. There wasn’t even the faintest discoloration to show for it.

“…It did nothing,” she muttered with a disappointed pout.

Sesshomaru hummed noncommittally again.

“My skin is not as fragile as yours. Next time, you must try harder.”

She grumbled something unintelligible under her breath, feeling now mortified more than anything.

And seeing her obvious embarrassment, Sesshomaru lifted said unharmed, unmarked hand to rest on her head and patted her in a conciliatory manner.

Rin huffed as she sank further into the warmth of his fur, comforted all the same.

It wasn’t fair that Lord Sesshomaru could leave his love written all over her skin, while she had to be content with only ever being part of his memory.

But she wouldn’t give up yet. That particular battle was not lost.

And there would always be a next time.

That exact ‘next time’ came sooner than Rin had anticipated.

She could never predict Lord Sesshomaru’s moods, nor was she sure when he’d return to her.

If it were up to her, they’d spend every minute of every day together, but alas, Lord Sesshomaru’s power also meant that there were stretches of time, sometimes short, sometimes unbearably long, where he wasn’t available to her, even if he never took the mantle role his own infamous father had possessed.

Still, she never complained.

Lord Sesshomaru was her husband, and despite their differing natures, one thing was for certain: He could see her as often or as little as he liked, such was his prerogative.

Luckily, another thing she had soon learned, was that Lord Sesshomaru was indeed a passionate and attentive man, and as much as she yearned for his attention, he yearned for hers just the same.

He came to visit on another late summer’s afternoon, weeks after she saw him last. And as was her habit, Rin abandoned all other responsibilities as soon as she got notice of his presence. With an apologetic wave toward her friends, she fled into the woods, heart pounding with exhilarating excitement at being reunited with him once more.

It wasn’t ladylike or proper to admit it, but she too was often in need of him. That fluttery thrill of reconciliation not just tugged at her heart, but also pulsed low in her abdomen and tingled on her lips.

It started out soft and chaste.

They were walking alongside, Jaken and A-Un trailed a few paces behind them, while Rin filled Sesshomaru in with all of her mundane tales he had missed in his absence.

Lord Sesshomaru’s hands were clasped behind his back and he listened attentively, but Rin was no more stranger to his body language. She saw the way his eyes traveled down her entire form, pausing at her lips, and she shuddered.

Soon enough, he dismissed both Jaken and A-Un, leaving the two of them alone once more.

And finally, as their blessed privacy granted them a moment of respite among low-hanging fern and withered wood, Lord Sesshomaru leaned down to kiss her.

She giggled happily when his nose first brushed over her forehead, along her temple and both cheeks, even over the bridge of her nose, scenting her the whole time.

Rin patiently let him indulge in this canine habit of his, scenting her all over to assure himself she was alright and healthy, as though her spoken assurance simply wasn’t enough, and she was soon rewarded for her patience when he finally pressed his lips to hers.

Rin sighed, closed her eyes and sank into that kiss.

For now, it was chaste yet again, close-mouthed and soft, but when she pulled back and opened her eyes to sweetly gaze up at him, she was greeted by the blazing want and hunger in his golden eyes. Rin shuddered as the heat from within licked at her again.

It felt good to be wanted with such passion, and it was so addicting, to know she could evoke such powerful urges from an even more powerful creature – one who didn’t submit easily to such base cravings.

But it wasn’t just a simple craving for flesh and heat. Lord Sesshomaru loved her passionately, inexorably, and he proved it to her every time they met.

She didn’t get the chance to ponder further, because he descended on her again, the press of his lips now more urgent as his hands reached up to gently cradle her face.

She sighed into the kiss and just as her lips parted, his tongue already invaded her mouth, meeting hers in a passionate battle of wills, though she couldn’t say who was the winner this time. It didn’t matter.

Mphf…

The sound was swallowed by his mouth and her head began to swim as the delightfully disorienting feeling of vertigo tugged at her.

However invasive and dizzying as it was to be kissed breathless, almost devoured by the hungry lips of her emaciated beast, Rin didn’t tumble to the ground though. Strong arms engulfed her at the same time hers desperately grasped at Lord Sesshomaru’s broad shoulders, just as she started to lose her breath.

Her knees felt weak, and at the first sign and scent of her mounting arousal, pulsing hot and damp between her thighs, a dangerous growl left Sesshomaru’s throat, and suddenly, Rin found herself pressed against a tree.

He moved so fast, her addled mind couldn’t keep up, but that didn’t matter either, because Lord Sesshomaru loomed hot and strong over her.

She hid her face in the crook of his neck as he freed them both only of the necessities, hiking up her kimono and the inner layer underneath it.

He only used one arm to hold her up, while she still held onto his shoulders, and with his other hand he quickly shed his armor and let it fall to the ground, before he tugged sharply at the ties of his hakama.

The inevitability of what was about to happen, of what had happened so often before, settled low and heavy in her gut.

She looked up at him then, but hair fell over his eyes, so she couldn’t see the fire in them, the passion that burned hot like a dying star.

Lord Sesshomaru never outright said he wanted her, words in general were not his preferred method of veneration. But the urgent way he pulled himself free, already hard, and the desperate way he grasped at her thighs, with both hands now, kneading the soft flesh as she willingly parted them further, spoke of his longing more thoroughly than any declaration could.

And once again, Rin could only bask in this feeling of being so urgently wanted. It felt good. That knowledge itself amplified any physical sensation tenfold.

Her breath against his neck was hot and damp when he finally pushed the blunt head of his cock against her weeping entrance., Her face was still hidden in the crook of his neck, pressed so close that she breathed him in and then herself again, over and over. The air was thin there, and her prolonged dizziness only made her cling tighter.

She couldn’t suppress the high-pitched whine as he pushed into her, not stopping before he pressed all the way up into the hot clutch of her body, until he couldn’t go any further.

Rin expected him to set a grueling pace right away, considering how desperately he had moved up until this point. But Sesshomaru stopped here, buried all the way inside her, as he held her in his strong arms against a withering tree that surely wouldn’t stand much longer by the time they were done.

Blurred as her senses were, she only belatedly realized that he had actually said something, judging by the faint rumble of his voice she could feel reverberate through his throat where her face was pressed against.

Rin lifted her head, breathing into his parted lips now.

“What?”

“Are you alright?” he asked again.

His rough tongue slipped free and greedily licked at her parted lips. It was another habit of his she had learned to appreciate over time. As much and as tenderly as Lord Sesshomaru kissed her, his nature and instinct often demanded a different sort of caress.

She wasn’t sure if human men were inclined to use their tongue as much, but as an inu yokai, Sesshomaru licked at her like she was a fresh whelp near constantly.

“Yes… yes, I’m fine,” she assured him breathlessly, squeezing at his shoulders in gratitude for his concern.

He didn’t say anything else after that, only pressed his nose against her hair as she sank her face into the crook of his neck again, nosing at the parted fabric of his robe and letting her lips glide across the column of his throat. She felt the vein there pound and throb.

And while she could muffle the sounds of her own mouth against his neck, there was nothing she could do to stop the lewd sounds of skin slapping with the force of his thrusts – of that pace he set.

Sesshomaru varied between deep and slow strokes, switching to rapid and shallow thrusts and then back to that languid pace entirely according to his own will.

Maybe he was toying with her again, drawing out the moment in slow torturous patience, but there was nothing Rin wanted to do about it.

She was gladly at his mercy.

The wood behind her back creaked under the strain of his forceful thrusts that shook her body, and Rin was grateful she still wore her kimono, lest her skin be scraped raw. The garment would be ruined by the time he was finished with her, but she suspected Lord Sesshomaru rather enjoyed leaving her in such a state of disarray. It was just another way he claimed her, by gifting her such finery only to destroy it in the throes of his passion.

Retaliation welled up in Rin, almost like anger igniting in her chest, and the familiar urge to return that possessive sentiment frothed up violently.

It climbed higher and higher the deeper and more merciless he pumped into her. Her gaze flickered up to his face and she saw him grit the canine rows of his teeth, silver bangs still veiling his eyes.

Her lips found his shoulder, pressing a heated kiss there before her mouth parted and her teeth sought purchase at the place where neck met collarbone.

Sesshomaru reacted instantly, hauling her higher against the tree, and Rin cried out at the dizzying feeling of suspension. Her legs tightened around his waist.

“Come on,” he urged roughly at her ear. “Do it. Bite me, Rin.”

Perhaps her mind was delirious with the lack of fresh air and vertigo that curled through her limbs, but to her, he almost sounded taunting, challenging her yet again.

Rin had no demonic instinct to guide her as he did, no ancient, feral blood urging her onward, and she never wanted to hurt him – if such a thing were even possible. But while he held her there, ravaging her from the inside, she too felt the familiar urge of wanting to leave a mark on him. This battle of passion once again ignited her need to win, to mar and scar.

She was his, there was no doubt about it, but it was only fair to prove to the world, once and for all, that Lord Sesshomaru was hers, just the same.

She didn’t know what that said about her, only that her love for Sesshomaru was vast and overwhelming, both destructive and healing at the same time. And she could no longer hold back.

Rin bit down hard.

A sound left him that wasn’t human, and he tore a startled yelp from her lungs when his hands tightened on her thighs in response, sure to bruise her yet again. He throbbed and twitched inside of her, but her victory was short-lived when the foreign and revolting tang of blood flooded her mouth.

Rin snapped out of whatever insanity had possessed her and pulled away with a horrified gasp.

“I– I’m sorry,” she stammered. “My Lord, I didn’t mean to–”

“–don’t” Sesshomaru cut in sharply and shut up any further protests from her with a demanding kiss.

His tongue pushed into her mouth again, licking at her lips, the inside of her cheek, even her gums. That urgent clash of teeth and tongue made Rin flinch.

Rin yelped into it as the world spun and he moved them away from the tree. The rough and brittle bark was replaced by the cold hard ground of the forest floor, and when she landed on her back, he was already there, looming over her.

The sight of him at that moment wasn’t gentle or pleasant to look at, but it was powerful, glorious and beautiful to Rin’s eyes.

She closed her eyes, arms wrapping around his neck as she surrendered to him once more. He ground his pelvis against hers and now there was no moan or cry that could match the force of being positively impaled by him, as she was now.

Pain and pleasure deliciously intertwined as he rutted into her and Rin’s throat turned dry and unusable, as though she was drowning. Her legs were clamped so tightly around his hips that she wasn’t sure she could unclench them ever again.

Before, she hadn’t been sure if she could even come when the overstimulation held her orgasm frustratingly out of reach like that, but Sesshomaru’s hard flesh and the force with which he drove it into her sliced up every nerve-ending and left them exposed and raw.

Her climax came violently and inevitably, and although her eyes fluttered open, her vision blacked out with the hefty, demolishing wave of carnal bliss. She rode out this orgasm with a few stuttering rolls of her hips against his, but even when she stilled, Sesshomaru didn’t.

He wasn’t done with her yet, and while he was a giving and generous lover, he also took his own pleasure with shameless avarice. He kept piling into her, crushing her hips against the unforgiving ground until it was too much.

Rin coughed, choking on those shallow breaths she couldn’t fully take in and she squeezed her eyes tightly shut, as he pushed and pushed and pushed.

But however ruthless and merciless his pace was, at last, Sesshomaru’s body surrendered as well, and Rin shuddered once more when she felt the hot spill of his release inside her – marking her from the inside in a way that she could never return.

The deafening and mind-numbing force of the climax that tore through her slowly ebbed out of Rin, and between the loud rushing of blood in her ears and the feeling of her legs shaking as they slowly lowered to the ground, she felt a clawed hand slide through her sweat-damp hair.

It was surprisingly gentle, whereas moments ago it had been forceful and hungry.

Rin opened her eyes and blinked a few times to clear her vision.  When her eyes finally focused, she found Sesshomaru watching her closely with a familiar crease of concern drawn between his brows.

But said concern melted away as soon as their eyes met. Rin said the very first thing that came to mind.

“You didn’t let me apologize,” she panted between breaths.

Sesshomaru tilted his head, and long strands of his hair followed the movement.

“For what?”

She cleared her throat once.

“I – uh, bit you.”

He blinked slowly down at her.

“Why would you apologize? I asked you to.”

Rin’s attention snapped to his neck and her eyes widened. She stared with open disbelief at the mark she knew she had left there. The same mark which was now notably absent.

“Wha– Where is it?” she sputtered, squirming underneath him.

“I bit you, there should be a scar! I felt it!”

She saw the amusement spark in his eyes and her face grew hot with both embarrassment and indignation as Sesshomaru hid a weak, smug curve of his lips and instead moved to disentangle himself from her.

She flinched when he pulled out and with all the sticky fluids that now dripped so lewdly out of her, she knew her kimono was well and truly ruined.

Sesshomaru didn’t go far, in fact, he turned to lay down on the ground right beside her, his fur once again slithering quite on its own to cover her still trembling form.

Rin huffed, crossing her arms over her chest. It was hard not to take offense when he was apparently so delighted to see her become annoyed.

“I already told you, you must simply try harder next time,” he shrugged beside her.

Rin rolled her eyes but didn’t fight the rolling warmth that curled up her stomach and into her chest, right behind her ribs.

Maybe Lord Sesshomaru had won this battle, but the war of passion was far from over.

Notes:

Thank you for reading and welcome to 2026, dear SessRin fans!

Long time no see, I'd say.

I've been a bit occupied with other stuff lately but I can never pass up on the chance of some good old smut for our favorite wholesome couple. I decided to do a little twist on it this time by making Rin the possessive one, but alas, her possessiveness is no match for Sesshomaru's haha.

The title of this fic is, of course, an homage to John Lyly's romance novel Euphues (1578), which includes the line "All's fair in love and wars". It worked perfectly well for the metaphor I chose, so I couldn't help myself.

I appreciate your support and would be delighted if you decide to leave kudos or a comment!

As always, see you soon!
