Chains Of Learning

Summary:

Before the Titan Wars, when the Fade and the waking world still touched freely, a rare spirit of Learning drifted through creation: Patient and precise, content to observe the patterns of existence without taking part in them.

Then came Elgar’nan, first among those who had clothed themselves in flesh. To him, Learning was not a mind but a prize. Learning, unaccustomed to being sought by anyone, interprets Elgar’nan’s persistence as purpose rather than possession.
And so, that misconception of purpose slowly becomes a trap of expectation.

Elgar'nan calls it guidance, the spirit calls it learning. In truth, it is the first act of subjugation: the chains of Learning.

Notes:

This is a story about what happens when curiosity is mistaken for submission, when softness is claimed as ownership, and when learning becomes the most dangerous act of all.

It is also a story about devotion, the tragic ache of wanting to belong while being fundamentally different, and the slow, fragile emergence of love in a world that teaches self-proclaimed gods to take rather than to care.

Chapter Text

In the ages before sound had meaning, before names carried weight, there existed a small brightness that learned by watching. By mimicking. He did not think of himself as alone. Only unshared.

The Fade hummed with movement. The great spirits flowed together, merging and parting in their endless experiments of being. He lingered at the edges of these convergences, careful not to intrude.

They noticed him sometimes. The spirits of Joy, of Valor, of Curiosity itself. For a while he would drift near, listening to their harmonies, noting how convivality altered another’s tone, how their lights brightened in proximity. Their glow becoming fuller, less prone to fracture. It fascinated him: how contact made them stronger, steadier.

So he tried.

When they brightened, he brightened. When their light softened, he softened in turn. He adjusted his pulse to match theirs. Not loosely, but exactly, as he had learned all patterns should be learned. Precision was respect.

Yet the moment he mirrored them perfectly was the moment they recoiled. Their glow stuttered. Harmony slipped. One would turn in something sharper and less nameable than anger alone: Unease. As though something intimate had been repeated back too clearly, too close. Without permission.

The chorus would resume without him.

He learned early that observation was tolerated. Participation was not.

Still, he remained nearby. He told himself it was for study. He charted their behaviors carefully: the gestures that preceded closeness, the rhythms that signaled comfort, the subtle changes that meant belonging. He memorized these things, catalogued them. Then began to refine them all.

This fascination wasn't something abstract. It was longing, folded into method.

Across uncounted ages that unfulfilled reaching became a quiet ache within him, a pulse just shy of language.

When others merged, he felt the outline of what was absent, the negative space where he might have fit if he had only understood the sequence correctly.

Connection, he believed, was a process. And processes could be learned, couldn't they?

He needed more data. So he watched more intensely. Waited. Adjusted himself again and again, growing ever more careful, ever more exact. Until even his stillness felt wrong to those who passed him by.

And then, at last, someone came looking for him.

At first it registered only as disturbance. A subtle drag in the fade where motion should have dissolved into nothing. Then again, more pronounced this time.

A presence, dense and deliberate, tracking his drift between thought and dream.

Learning has never been the center of attention so he panicked, turned away and slipped deeper into the mist of half-formed ideas.

The presence followed.

That was new.

Spirits brushed against one another constantly, their awareness overlapping without intention. Yet this, right now, was different. This attention had weight. It did not collide or scatter. It held.

He ignored it. That had always been enough before. But the focus remained, silent and unblinking, close enough that he could feel it the way one feels a pause in music, a breath held too long.

Time passed, or something like it. In a place without sun or decay, centuries could collapse into moments after all.

Sometimes he thought the presence gone, only to sense it again when he tried to shape words aloud, as though it were listening.

Other times it pressed faint impressions into the fabric of dreams: suggestions of edges, of structure, of form not native to the Fade.

It unsettled him.

And yet, beneath the unease, something else stirred. Spirits did not persist without reason. Attention was not freely given. Had he done something to earn it? Was this what it meant to be noticed?

When at last he dared to ask, his voice trembled like an unfinished thought.

“Why do you keep looking?”

The answer did not come as language. It came as blinding light. Narrowed. Deliberate. The way a structure settles when a final piece is set into place. The sensation carried absolute certainty.

The intensity of it startled Learning badly enough that he fled yet again.

He folded himself into dreams of forests and oceans, into songs without words, into places where awareness diffused and identity softened. He stayed there a long while, careful not to surface.

Still, the presence lingered. Always on the edge of his perception...

Eventually, caution gave way to habit. Habit to study. He began to track it's patterns, the intervals between it's appearances, the warmth and pressure it left behind when it withdrew. He told himself this was observation, nothing more.

Slowly, against his better logic, the data accumulated into meaning.

So one time when Learning felt the pull again, that rhythmic disturbance in the Fade that foreshadowed that Being again, Learning turned to face it.

The air grew thick, the fabric of dream hardening into outline. A voice cut through then as Learning allowed it closer than he's ever allowed.

“You are the one that learns.”

It wasn’t a question. The tone was declarative, sharp-edged. The presence burned in color—gold, crimson, motion like flame—but the heat was uneven, flickering, more assertion than mastery.

Learning hesitated, his light dimming out of reflex. “I am… one of many who learn, yes” he said carefully, unsure what rule he had broken to deserve being addressed so directly.

The other seemed amused. “Then you know me.”

Learning frowned.

“I do not.”

A ripple of something like laughter moved through the air. All things know me. They just haven’t learned the word yet.”

It was arrogance, pure and unfiltered, but Learning couldn’t yet recognize it as such. To him it sounded like certainty, the kind he’d seen only in spirits that belonged to circles. Those who had purpose, rhythm, one another

He recorded the cadence of that voice in his mind: brusque, uneven. “You have a name, then?”, he asked, curious.

“Elgar’nan.”

The syllables rang like a strike of metal, loud enough to make the Fade ripple. Shapes nearby lost cohesion, collapsing into simpler forms. Learning hesitated as he had never heard a spirit name itself so...forcefully. He folded the name into memory, tasting its shape.

And why do you seek me?”

Elgar’nan’s form steadied. “Because you move apart. You see everything and claim nothing. You remember what others lose. You learn. I want that.”

The bluntness should have alarmed the spirit, but it didn’t. It sounded… truthful. Almost admirable. Want was a word Learning understood.

“...You wish to learn?”

“To keep my power. To bind others to me.”

Learning frowned at that, confused. “Keeping is not learning.”

“Then I will learn how to keep.”

There was no deceit, only relentless logic turned toward ownership. The simplicity of it fascinated Learning. This creature that thought in declarations rather than questions. He found himself wanting to understand why. How it could function like that.

"I cannot teach what I do not yet understand myself. Connections are...complicated.”

Elgar’nan tilted his head, a motion with too much precision in it. “You understand more than most.”

I observe more than most,” Mahanon corrected. “That is not the same. Belonging is not observation. I wish to learn it myself, so I cannot instruct it.

The other’s light flickered, brightening with irritation. “Strength does not require belonging."

Learning inclined slightly.

“It does not.” A beat. “Yet those who form bonds change. Their resilience increases. Their recovery accelerates. Their affect stabilizes.” His light brightened faintly with fascination. “It appears to be a form of reinforcement I do not yet understand.”

Learning's voice carried no shame in the confession. It was simple truth. “So I cannot help you right now.

He turned, ready to dissolve back into the softer regions of the Fade, but the air thickened again.

“I can make all this more clear to you.”

The words stopped Learning mid-turn. They carried no tenderness, yet to him the absolution in it was magnetic. He studied the bright, proud being that had spoken. “How?”

Elgar’nan’s light steadied, and for the first time he smiled. “Come with me. I’ll show you.”

Learning hesitated. He rarely ventured beyond familiar dreamscapes: the quiet valleys of thought where shapes melted and reformed without consequence. This place where Elgar’nan stood already felt different, heavier and structured... The distance between their worlds pressed against him like a wall.

I do not… go far,” he admitted. “It changes the noise. I...I lose my patterns.”

Elgar’nan studied him, eyes narrowing, understanding enough to know he had pushed as far as he should. Recognizing the fragility of the moment, the thin, bright line between flight and fascination of the other spirit.

“Then come when you’re ready,” he said finally, voice firm. “Find me. I’ll be waiting.”

And he vanished, leaving behind a trace of gold that did not dissolve. A thread to follow if Learning so chose.

Learning stared at the beautiful thin cord with fascination. A tool to show him the way.

Not knowing that this was a snare, already pulling itself around his essence tightly.
