Carina was nearly four months pregnant, fifteen weeks and three days to be exact.
Everything was going smoothly. Carina had finally left the trenches of morning sickness, although in her books it was ‘all-day sickness’.
Maya had been supportive as she could be, holding her hair back as she threw up countless times in the morning or the middle of the night. She brought her crackers and ginger tea, even if Carina complained about how much she hated it.
Everybody had been helpful with Liam, as well. He was a little over five months now and hitting all of his milestones; Maya and Carina couldn't be more proud.
Maya was still adjusting to the new team. Hughes and Montgomery had left a couple of weeks ago, alongside Warren who went back to his surgical residency, and Gibson had gotten injured out of the job. It felt like the family had been torn apart, even if they had left for good and understandable reasons.
Andy, Maya, and Robert were the last men standing, and it was strange to say the very least. In three months, everyone remotely important in their lives had disappeared.
Sure, they stayed in contact regularly and she saw Ben around the hospital, but it's not the same. It'll never be the same.
Today was like any other clinic day at the station. DeLuca and Warren were helping out due to the sheer number of people that were seeking free healthcare — which was a problem on its own — but Maya was just happy to be around Carina.
She had been worried more for her lately, with understandable reasoning.
Maya knew that Carina loved her job. There was no doubt about that. She just wished she could rest a bit more; Carina was on her feet more than Maya liked, and whenever she'd try and bring it up, Carina would scream at her to stop treating her as incompetent. She knew she was being a tad… overbearing, but she couldn't help it. She would lose her mind if anything happened to Carina and their family that was slowly growing.
They were her lifeline. They were keeping her heart beating. It might as well beat for them. Which felt insane coming from Maya. Monogamy is for the weak, Maya. But Carina had changed her, for the better. Carina made her better.
“Hey, I'm Dr. Carina DeLuca…” The voices shrilled into one as she watched her wife at work, taking care of the people with such kindness and compassion.
“You're smitten.” Andy nudged her shoulder, a smirk on her face.
“Shut up! I am not!” Maya gasped, trying to hide the smile that was threatening to make an appearance.
Andy rolled her eyes. “You're allowed to be smitten. She's your wife.”
“Yeah, I guess I am.” Maya clasped her hands in front of her as her eyes tracked Carina, their eyes meeting for a second as she looked up, a smile growing on her face.
“Get a room.” Andy laughed and walked off, going to help get people off the list. Maya followed in her footing.
The hours passed slowly as the people worked to empty the clinic when the klaxons sounded.
📡 — “Enginge nineteen, ladder nineteen, aid car nineteen. Requested to a fire at 1845 Earl Street.”
Everyone jumped into gear, grabbing their turnouts as they headed to their seats. Sirens rang as the trucks sped off.
Carina sighed as she watched them leave, a familiar feeling of worry creeping up in her stomach again.
She knew what she was getting into when she married Maya. The constant fear when she goes out on calls, the worry when she comes home later than usual, and the feeling of impending doom when she doesn't answer her phone.
Even more so now that they have a little boy and another baby on the way.
The fear of being left to parent two kids alone makes her nauseous.
But she has to push through it. Focus on the people that need her right now. The patients. Keep herself busy.
The team arrived back a couple of hours later, faces and turnout covered in soot as they threw them into a pile to be scrubbed.
“How was it?”
“Rough.” Maya sighed.
“Are you okay?”
“I will be.”
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“...No. Thank you, though.” Maya smiled. “I’m going to go shower.”
Carina nodded, placing her hands on her face as she pressed a kiss to her lips, hands eventually tangling in her hair. “Meet you at home?”
“Yeah. I love you.”
“Anch’io ti amo, bambina.” Carina smiled as she walked off, heading towards her car to relieve the babysitter they have for Liam.
Carina had been teaching Maya Italian, slowly but surely, giving her the basics. She was getting pretty good at understanding what Carina was saying most times.
She headed towards the house, parking her car and double-checking that it was locked before heading towards the house.
“Thanks for watching him,” Carina smiled as she placed her bag on the nearby chair.
“No worries. It's my job. He's a lovely guy.” She smiled at the sleeping baby.
“Thank you.”
She smiled and grabbed her stuff before leaving. “Of course. I'll see you later, bye.”
“Bye bye.” Carina closed the door behind her, sighing with relief as the silence surrounded her, heading to the kitchen to get a start on dinner.
Maya sighed as she stepped out of the shower, the cold air hitting her like a freight train as she tightened her towel around her, getting dressed as quickly as she could, she just wanted to be with her family.
She drove as quickly as the law would let her, parking her car and locking it before entering the house, locking the door behind her.
“Honey, I'm home!” Maya teased, her eyes tracing the place as she looked for Carina. .
Carina walked out of the kitchen with a smile on her face. “Hi, mammaita.” She giggled, placing a quick kiss on her lips.
“What are you cooking?” She sniffed the aroma of the house. “Is that… lasagna?” Maya bit her lip.
“Maybe…”
“I think I just orgasmed a little.”
“Maya!” Carina swatted at her as Maya successfully dodged it, chuckling as she dragged her towards the couch.
“How do you feel?” Maya placed a hand on her thigh, looking at Carina. Properly looking at her. Admiring her.
Carina sucked in a breath. “I'm okay, bella. Just… my boobs are sore, and my stomach is itchy alongside this very annoying bloating.”
Maya smiled. “Hey, that bloating you're calling ‘annoying’ could be the start of your very own little baby bump.” She placed a hand on her stomach, feeling the faint curve that wasn't there before.
“Hmm… maybe. The itching would explain it.” She sighed, placing her hand on top of Maya’s.
“And hey…” she dropped her voice to a whisper, “if you ever need help with those sore boobs…” Maya bit her lip, placing kisses on her neck.
Carina moaned into it. “Nuh-uh. Not happening. Nope.” She pushed Maya off her, making her groan in displeasure. “Later.” She whispered in her ear before getting up to check on the lasagna.
“Seriously? You're leaving your wife hanging?”
“Yep.”
“You're mean.”
“Maybe.” She chuckled as she headed to the stove, checking on the lasagne so they don't end up in a food poisoning position… again. “Should be ready in twenty.”
Maya smiled. “So… a quickie?”
Carina rolled her eyes. “You're more desperate than me and I'm the one with the hormones running rampant.”
Maya chuckled, placing hands on her hips as she headed towards her, backing her up towards a wall. “Can you blame me? I'm just obsessed with my irresistible wife.”
Her breath was hot on her neck as Carina captured her lips in a kiss. “Okay. But… only twenty minutes.” She held a finger up.
“You dictated your whole life to the reproductive system, I’m sure you could do it in ten or less.”
“Sounds like a challenge.”
“Maybe it is.”
“Oh? You're on.”
Maya smiled like a kid in a candy store as they giggled towards the bedroom, lips trapped in a kiss as they stumbled over each other, falling onto the bed with a creak.
And as a fact… Maya was fully pleasured in eight minutes, feeling as if she was on cloud nine with the way her wife can make her feel.
Then suddenly, they were lavishing up a plate of lasagne, somewhat half naked as they giggled at the table, telling stories to one another.
“You go get ready for bed. I'll do the dishes.” Maya placed a peck on her lips as she stood in the kitchen in Carina’s t-shirt and a pair of pants.
“Okay, thank you. Don't be too long.” She smiled.
“Never.”
Maya quickly scrubbed the dishes, leaving them to dry on the rack as she wiped down the surfaces before heading towards the bedroom, joining Carina in bed as her arm snaked around her waist.
“Buonanotte, bella.” Carina whispered into the night as Maya burrowed under the covers.
“Goodnight.” Maya smiled into her neck.
Although her sleep wasn't peaceful. She arouse by the sound of her phone blasting with notifications a couple hours later.
“Shut it up…” Carina groaned, throwing a pillow over her head.
“Okay. Sorry.” Her voice was rough with sleep.
FIVE ALARM. ALL FIREFIGHTERS ON DUTY.
Maya sighed as she read the screen. “I've gotta go.” She placed a kiss on Carina's shoulder.
“Five alarm?”
“Yeah.”
Carina nodded. “Be safe.”
“Always.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too.” She smiled as she pulled on her clothes and ran into the hallway to grab her shoes and out the door towards the station.
Maya arrived on the scene twenty minutes later, a block of apartments all on fire, not everyone evacuated.
Med tents were set up everywhere, fire trucks were parked awkwardly.
“Bishop! You're on search and rescue with Beckett!”
“Got it, captain!” She suited up and headed inside the fire, the heat somewhat suffocating in her turnouts. The rhythmic sound of her oxygen filling the empty noise between the fire crackling.
“Seattle Fire Department! Call out!” Maya shouted throughout every floor she went, Beckett trailing behind her and echoing her voice as she shouted.
“Call out!”
“Help.” The voice was weak, faint.
“Did you hear that?” She turned to her partner.
“Yeah. That way.”
They ran towards the voice, entering the apartment as the fire crackled behind them, Beckett going at it with an extinguisher.
“Ma’am?”
“I can’t… I can't move.” She huffed as she struggled to get her breath from the fallen panel she was under.
“It's okay. We're gonna get you out.”
“My… my baby.”
“Where's your baby?”
“In… In her crib. Please. Please— you have to get her out.” Her voice strained with tears.
“Okay. Beckett, get the baby.”
He nodded and ran down the hall, opening the door revealing a one-year-old standing up with tears down her cheeks, calling for her mom.
“Take her downstairs, I got this… Just… come back, okay?”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah. I'll be fine.” Maya sighed as Beckett radioed it in, running down the stairs with a child tucked safely in his arms.
“Keep talking to me, okay? I'm gonna get you out…”
“Okay. Ok. I'm– I… You’ve gotta save my baby,”
“We've gotten her out, Ma’am. What’s… What's your name?”
“I- Sarah.. Im– I'm scared. I can't leave my baby. I'm all she has.” Tears rolled down her cheek.
Maya sighed. “I know. Look– I have a beautiful baby boy, and– and my wife is expecting another baby, and– I'm terrified. I'm terrified I'm going to leave them. That I'm going to leave her to single-parent two babies.” Maya nodded. “I'm going to get you out of here. You're not going to leave that baby girl of yours.”
Sarah nodded. “Okay. O… okay.” The tears trickled down her cheek.
Bishop got to work, trying to lift the panel with the supplies she had without sending her into shock or causing her to bleed out internally.
“Mayday! Mayday! I need all immediate personnel out immediately, structural integrity is weak and we're looking at another collapse.” The voices came through the radio, crackling to life.
“What– What does that mean? Am I- Am I going to die?” Sarah panicked, squirming, trying to free herself.
“Look– You're not going to die– I just… I need to work quicker. Stay still.” Maya nodded, speeding up her actions before everything went black.
The roof collapsed on top of her.
The sharp pain that travelled throughout her body.
Her thoughts travelled to Carina and Liam.
Life flashing before her eyes — literally.
“Bishop, do you copy?”
And then… darkness. Silence. Peace, maybe.
