No one said relationships were easy, but were they meant to be this hard?

Chapter 1: Chapter One

Chapter Text

Will tried to dress quietly as to not wake a sleeping Macklin.

“What are you doing?” Macklin groggily called out from the bed. Will quietly closed the wardrobe door turning to see Mack trying to go back to sleep. Will walked over and ran his fingers through Mack’s messy hair. Mack leaned into the touch keeping his eyes closed but a small smile crept on his face.

“I’m just getting breakfast with Gabe,” Will whispered as he stroked Macklin’s hair, Will could feel Mack tense under his touch.

“But we have a game today…” Mack squinted at Will.

“Yeah, I’m just going to have a quick catch-up with him and then I will meet you at the game.” Will watched as Mack rolled his eyes and turned over. “Hey c’mon, don’t be like that.” Will lay down next to Mack reaching for the younger boy. Mack allowed himself to be pulled into Will’s warm embrace. Will wrapped his arms around Mack’s waist and Mack placed his hands on top of Will’s.

“You know he’s just a friend,” Will kissed Mack’s neck as he tried to reassure him.

“Yeah, he’s “just” a friend now.” Mack hated how petty and jealous he sounded but it was true. Will and Gabe had a past and it was hard for Mack not to feel a little insecure about Will meeting up with his past fling or whatever they were to each other. Will had never really explained much about their relationship to Mack except that they had hooked up a couple of times when they were at BC together, but never went into much detail.
Will squeezed Mack and kissed him on his cheek, “I have to go or I’m going to be late.” Mack rolled his eyes and turned over as Will sat up on the bed.

“So are you coming back here or?” Mack didn’t have his car and typically they would drive together to their home games or co-ordinate it so that they would arrive together. It calmed Mack arriving to the games with Will. He was his safe place and kept his game day nerves settled.

“Well, I’m not sure what time we will be done so probably better if I meet you at the game yeah?” Will tried to stay casual but he knew Mack wouldn’t be happy going solo to the game.

“Yeah okay whatever Will.” Mack this time rolled his eyes in clear view of Will before turning his back to him. Will again reached a hand out to stroke Mack’s hair. Mack now actually annoyed shrugged Will off closing his eyes. Will got the hint and stood up and then grabbed the rest of his things. Will walked back over to his bed and kissed Mack on his head.

“I’ll see you later okay?”

“Have fun.” Mack responded completely void of any sincere emotion.

Will got in his car and he could admit that he felt a little but shitty about meeting up with Gabe while leaving a naked Mack in his bed. Will arrived at the café and saw Gabe sitting out the front with two coffees in front of him. When Will approached Gabe stood up and pulled him in for a hug.

“Hey man!” Gabe beamed at him as he pulled away.

“Hey,” Will smiled at Gabe as he sat down.

“How are you? It’s been too long!” Gabe asked as he pushed one of the coffees towards Will.

“Yeah I know, I’m good, busy but good. You know how it is,” Will took a sip of the coffee,

“What about you man?” The two fell into easy conversation about their hockey seasons, Will’s recent injury, their families and their teams.

“So…” Gabe started, Will looked up at him over his coffee, “How is uh Mack?” Will had told Gabe about his relationship with Mack. Not in much detail but just that they were dating.

“Yeah, um he’s good.” Gabe looked at Will sceptically.

“He’s good?” Gabe repeated. “That’s it.” Will chuckled not sure of what else to say.

“Yeah like he’s good, he’s playing well. He’ll be going to the Olympics soon so that’s exciting for him.” Gabe just nodded smiling as he sipped his coffee. “What?” Will asked.

“Nothing.” Gabe shrugged, “Just that’s a pretty nothing response when someone is asking about your-” Gabe paused, “Boyfriend? Is he your boyfriend?”

Will paused for a second, they hadn’t really spoken about what they were to each other, they had never needed to label themselves as no one really knew about them. Toff and Cat knew as they had walked in on them once and Will had told Gabe, but it was all relatively new and had just sort of happened, there was never really a conversation about it.

“Well like we are dating but we haven’t spoken specifically about what that all entails I guess.”

“Okay.” Gabe just nodded. Will felt a sudden pang of guilt in his stomach in his description of his and Mack’s relationship.

For the rest of the catch-up Will’s mind kept racing back to Mack that he was constantly zoning in and out of the conversation. Will checked his phone and saw a message from Mack asking if they would arrive together at the stadium. Will then realised that he was going to be late and quickly messaged Mack back telling him he would be late but would be there for their warm-up together.

“Well I will see you on the ice Smitty,” Gabe said as they hugged each other goodbye. Will felt that the hug lasted a few seconds longer than was necessary. When they pulled apart, Gabe kept his hand on Will’s arm and said in a low voice, “You know I’ve missed you Smit,”

Will took a step back, needing some distance. “Yeah miss you too bud,” Will smiled trying to keep it friendly, “But we better go before we both get in trouble.” Will noticed there was something in Gabe’s eyes as he watched Will.

“I’ll see you out there,” Will called out as he made his way to his car.

Will drove quickly to the stadium and frantically got changed and out on the ice to join his team for their warm-up. When Will got on the ice he instantly spotted Mack skating around, he seemed to be keeping to himself instead of his usual yapping and messing around with the team. Will skated straight up to him and lightly bumped him.

“Hey,” Will smiled at Mack.
“Hey.” Mack responded his smile tight, “How was your breakfast?” Mack asked as he messed around with the puck.

“Yeah it was fine, was good to catch up with Gabe, but you know, nothing exciting.” Will again bumped Mack’s shoulder. Mack just nodded then went back to warming up.

Will and Mack completed their pre-game warmups before heading back into the locker room to get changed and ready for the game.
Will watched from his cubby as Mack got changed and fuck he was hot. Will quickly got up and went over to Mack and discreetly whispered in his ear, “Come with me quicky,”

Mack looked at Will who was heading out of the locker room. Mack instantly followed Will to the utility closet that they had become quite familiar with. As soon as Mack closed the door behind him he was pushed up against it. Will rested his forehead against Mack’s.

“I missed you this morning,” Will whispered. Mack sighed closing his eyes.

“I missed you too.” Mack wrapped his arms around Will’s neck. “I don’t like arriving here without you.”

“I know, I’m sorry Mackie.” Will kissed Mack lightly.

“It’s okay.” Mack replied before kissing Will again, this time with much more heat. One of Will’s hands gripped Mack’s hair while they other cupped Mack’s jaw deepening the kiss.

“Fuck-“ Will moaned as they broke apart, “I’ve wanted to kiss you all day.” Will looked at Mack a smile creeping on his lips.

“Well you could’ve if you hadn’t of left me alone in your bed.” Will groaned pulling Mack closer to him.

“You look so good in my bed,” Will kissed Mack again, knowing they had to stop and get back. “I’m sorry I left you there, but I want you back there tonight.”

“Oh yeah?” Mack cocked an eyebrow with a seductive grin on his face that did things to Will.

“Yeah,” was all Will was able to say before he crashed their lips together. After a couple more minutes of making out they made their way back to the locker room and finished getting ready before the match started.

The game had been going great. Will and Mack were an unbeatable force. Mack loved when they were on like this, their chemistry on the ice was unbelievable. Mack had been having one of his best games and a lot of that was because of Will. Mack had almost forgotten about his earlier jealousy of Gabe and his annoyance that Will had left him to go and hang out with Gabe. Everything had been going great until the last 12 minutes of the game. Mack had been trying to get the puck out of the Rangers end. Mack had dodged Miller’s attempts at getting the puck off of him and then all of a sudden he felt Gabe on him and then copped an elbow to the face. It was a dirty play, Mack could have let it slide had he not heard what Gabe had said when he hit him square in the nose.

“He’s mine.”
