Chapter 1: 7 a.m.

Chapter Text

The second Trinity's alarm clock went off that morning she knew how the day would go, she felt it in the remnants of the nightmare she'd had the night before, she felt it as she cursed under her breath after stubbing her toe as she climbed out of bed, and she felt it even more as she spilled her coffee on her hand, and burnt the toast she'd made for herself and her roommate.

"Fuck", she whispered under her breath, before inhaling sharply and rubbing her temples, a headache already forming behind her eyes.

That's how Dennis finds her a few minutes later, looking as if she hated the world, and was silently cursing it, "you alright?"

Trinity snapped her head up, locking eyes with him quick to brush off his concerns, "I'm just fine huckleberry, let's go", she grabbed her keys and practically dragged him out the door, ready to get the day started as soon as possible, so it could end quicker.

One thing Trinity loves about the drive to work is the quiet of the morning, the soft sound of her music through the speakers, and the sound of her roomies soft but deep breaths as he stares out the window, hands in his lap, his way of preparing for the day, she's never told him this, and probably never will, but it brings her immense comfort to have him beside her on the drive to work.

Once they arrive at the hospital they climb out of the car and make their way into the locker room, quickly changing into their scrubs, then walking out into the pitt to find a place where they're needed.

Trinity spots McKay holding a patients chart and gesturing towards her, so she heads over and grabs the chart from her, "what have we got?"

McKay nods her head towards a patients room explaining as they walk, "the patient is a 16 year old girl, came in with chest pains, and decreased breath sounds, no history of asthma, and nothing else in her history that would be a cause for this, says she hasn't taken any new medications, or made any diet changes recently, basically we don't know the cause right now, however I did notice some interesting behaviors between her, and the man that brought her in, figured I'd bring you on with me, I know how your brain works, and I know you tend to notice the things most people don't."

Trinity nods once, processing the words, "okay, yeah I'll definitely help in any way I can, thank you for trusting me to help on this case with you, it means a lot."

McKay smiles gently, "of course, I trust your judgement Santos."

Pulling back the curtain to the patient waiting on the other side, Trinity's gaze hardens slightly at the taller man, standing by the bed, practically towering over the girl in the bed, but she lets her gaze soften as she makes eye contact with the patient, the girl already wearing an oxygen mask to help her breathe better, "hello, my name is Dr Santos, I hear you've been having some breathing issues yeah? I'm going to listen to your breathing real quick, and check your oxygen levels, would you mind sitting up for me?"

Trinity watches as the girl seemingly looks at the taller man for permission, before nodding slightly and sitting up.

She lets her eyes flicker to the man every so often as she listens to the girls breath sounds, checking her oxygen with the pulse ox, she studies him, the man whilst being tall, is also broad shouldered, and muscled, someone who could easily overpower the girl laying in the the hospital bed, could easily overpower Trinity if given the chance, and that scared her.

Once she was done with the examination she turned her gaze back to the girl, "okay your breathing is pretty labored and your oxygen is a bit low, so we're gonna keep that oxygen mask on you for a bit, just until we figure out what's going on with you okay?"

The girl looks to the man again, something like fear in her expression, which quickly vanishes as she nods again.

Trinity turns her questioning gaze onto the man, "is there anything that we've missed in her history, or anything you've noticed recently?"

The man looks annoyed, like his presence in the er is an annoyance, like he's mad that he even had to come in the first place, "she's fine, nothing unusual I've noticed, same things as usual, I don't know much about her medical history, when can we get out of here, we've got somewhere to be."

Trinity rolled her eyes in her head at his response, anger spiking quickly in her chest at the way the man spoke, the way he dismissed the girls health issue like it was an inconvenience to him, but she tried to keep the anger out of her voice as she responded to him, "we'll have to get some more tests done, but we'll try to get you two out of here as soon as we can, now I'll be right back I just have to get those tests ordered for you."

Trinity walks out of the room, taking deep breaths as she tries to keep her anger in check, McKay soon follows her out, "so what's the verdict Santos? It's not just me is it?"

Trinity shakes her head, "no not just you, but we have to be smart about this, the last time I let my suspicions known it didn't go anywhere, we need solid evidence before we bring this forward."

McKay nods, "I agree, thanks for the consult Santos, I'd like to keep you on the case, if you think you can handle it."

Trinity quickly agrees to stay on, "I'd feel better knowing I tried everything I could to help, even if it doesn't lead to anything."

After that they both grab some new charts to work on as they wait for a spot to open up for the tests their patient needs, Trinity has to remind herself to take deep breaths several times for the next half an hour as she continues to think about all the possibilities of what could be going on with her patient, her head was not entirely in a good state that morning as it was, but she powers through and walks over to her next patient, taking another deep breath and pulling back the curtain.
