“Do you know what I love most about you?”
She asks from the safety of their apartment: a true haussmannian jewel, complete with a high ceiling, elegant windows, and the loveliest rooftop in the city. When they first moved in last summer, she and Felix would spend all their evenings up there, watching the lights come ablaze and filling their lungs with the heady scent of freedom. Now that November is on its way out, Kagami finds that quiet nights in also have their perks — amongst which are fuzzy socks, tiny marshmallows, and the most gorgeous movies she's ever seen.
“Hmm, I don't know, my queen.” Felix taps his lip playfully. “Prooobably my irresistible charm?”
They're sitting directly on the floor, neither of them paying much attention to the screen; but the screen is paying attention to him, casting its golden glow over his cherished grin. They're all grown-up now, old souls and little kids all at once, powerful enough that no one dares to oppose their concubinage: even Mother resigned herself to the move, and packed Kagami's trophies herself. A clumsy olive branch, as neither of the lovers wanted those relics in their home.
There are facts, and then there are annoying administrative details. December is just around the corner, which means Felix will officially turn eighteen soon; the course of action couldn't be clearer.
“That too, I suppose… and your eyes. And your hair.” Picking a single attribute, she realises, would be like plucking feathers off a peacock's tail. “I was actually thinking of something else.”
“Which is?”
“How you always make the first move.”
Their first kiss, their first dance, their first I-love-you. Granted, she wasn't happy when Argos crashed Tatsu, but…
Oh, who is she kidding! She loved that part; Felix knows she loved that part. In fact, he is making another first move right now — scooting closer, batting his eyelashes, tilting his head to a very tempting angle. In an amazing show of fortitude, Kagami manages to press her index to his lips.
“Isn't it exhausting, always being the one to take that jump? That leap of faith?”
Felix's mouth cracks open, but she shushes him again. ‘Never,’ is what he was about to say; ‘not when it comes to you.’ Peacock, tail, feathers. If Kagami lets him say those things out loud, she will never get to the bottom of what she wants to say.
“The me you met back then,” she goes on, “was exhausted. It isn't fair that you had to pick up the pieces.”
“Wasn't it? Since then, I have gotten to meet many versions of you. Some of which are meant for my eyes alone.”
“Hush, Duvet. If you don't let me finish, it is my Lightning Dragon you shall next get acquainted with!”
“Do you promise?”
Kagami gives in, and kisses him senseless. There.
There. Felix hums, almost sings into the kiss, and he melts into her and she melts into him and everything is magical. His hands search for hers like wings grabbing hold of the wind; she sees her chance, and slides the gift into his palm.
He's stolen enough jewellery to recognise the shape of the item; perhaps even the material, smooth and warm from their shared body heat. Still, he is perplexed — perhaps even puzzled. Kagami gets a front row seat to the twist of his eyebrows.
“My love,” he asks, “whose amok is that?”
She bites her lip, trying to keep the giggle in. It doesn't work all the way.
If Felix interrogates the Peacock, he will find that the gift is not, in fact, an amok — though it is imbued with the magic of emotions. Of course, there is a much easier way to ascertain its nature: Felix uncurls his fingers, a lily blooming in the middle of winter, and the gasp that follows is worth a thousand trophies.
Kagami chose this ring because it looks like solid light, like fire artfully stolen from the gods; she is tired of silver, her boy tired of steel, and their life together shall be filled with nothing but gold gold gold. She chose this ring because she, too, was melted, and he, too, was reforged: both of them transmuted, from something raw to something beautiful.
For once, Felix is rendered speechless, but his is a silence Kagami isn't afraid of. He nods, hard and fast, and in a silly reflex she cups his face to make sure it doesn't take off; a tear rolls down his cheek, quickly caught by her thumb. Relief, she knows. The overwhelming safety of being loved.
When he regains control over his tongue, his first words are:
“Do I still get to ask you?”
And then, when he regains control of his brain:
“Nevermind that — I am still asking you. It's non-negotiable!”
Kagami doesn't doubt that he has a plan, and a lavish one at that. Doesn't doubt that it includes a musical number, either.
She peppers kisses all over his face, his jaw, down the slope of his neck left exposed for her benefit (tease!); under her touch, Felix chirps like a bird, and lets himself sink into the soft fibres of the carpet. ‘Mine,’ her dragon instincts sing, louder with every beat of their waltzing hearts; ‘mine, mine, forever mine.’
She's never needed a ring to make it fact.
