Chapter Text
it has come to johns attention that sherlock was an odd human being. sherlock hated sunny weather. he had somewhat of an amazing understanding of certain situations but seemed to be completely off in any kind of social interactions. sometimes, his roommate didnt speak for days, and sometimes he didnt sleep. sherlock also stored human and animal remains and other disgusting stuff john preferred not to think about in the flat he and john shared, hence sherlocks huge thirst for knowledge. all in all, sherlock was probably the most obscure human john knew.
what he didnt know is that sherlock wasnt a human at all.
well, sherlock did his best to hide it. telling himself if he concealed it well enough john wouldnt even notice. why would he? no one has ever guessed sherlock was a monster. there were certain indicators sherlock couldnt conceal, but no one has ever noticed sherlocks lack of a mirror reflection, or his pointy teeth. why would john watson notice them? he was just a regular human of medium intellect, just like all the rest of them. which didnt mean sherlock wasnt particularly fond of john, he really was. a little bit too fond then a vampire should be for a human, he figured.
sherlock didnt like humans. he didnt really like vampires either. everyone, of either species, was just so .. simple, and stupid. that was the best he could put it. but john, sherlock liked him. sherlock liked how john wasnt pissed off by him. sherlock liked that john put up with all of his bullshit, all of his quirks and flaws.
well, almost all of them. john was, or at least sherlock hoped he was, fully unaware of the fact that sherlock was a vampire. actually, if one would view it that way, john didnt put up with most of sherlocks quirks because he simply wasnt aware of them. something which sherlock valued highly, because he knew that he was seen as strange anyway, so it was easy to hide a few things of odd nature. due to the lack of own blood on his veins, his skin was usually cold. to compensate that he drank a lot of tea, that would rise his body temperature naturally. sherlock also didnt need a lot of sleep, at least when he was well nourished, but john has registered it wasnt of sherlocks nature to sleep a lot. with which he was kind of right, in the thrill of a case sherlock really preferred his rest to be brief. of course john wouldnt assume sherlock was some inhuman being just because of his sleeping routine. something which sherlock had a harder time to cover were the times where his blood component was low, which would cause him to faint on a regular basis, sometimes to fully lose his vision, and it would put him in a state of a furious thirst for blood. sherlock tried to avoid this state of withdrawal. he knew that he could technically survive a few months without any blood source, but that was an experience he would try to prevent at all costs. after a few days of not feeding, he starts hearing deep rumbling in his head. something that disturbed his strain of thought, the quality of his he valued so much. after a few weeks, it become blurry vision, nausea, dizziness and sometimes even hallucinations. and after a month of not feeding he would fall into a sleep that was even closer to a state of death then his usual existence was. something that could be compared to a coma, from which he could only wake up if he was receiving blood. and after a few months, even that would be terminal and he would finally cross the line that defined his mere existence and die in a painful manner. which was weird, somehow, because sherlock was technically already dead. his body was almost missing any of his own blood, since it had been drained decades ago. just because the vampire whose victim sherlock became back then was hastily and careless, some of the vampires blood got in contact with sherlocks own, he was now damned to live this way. just because some vampire accidentally bit their own lip sore in excitement over their victim a decade ago. sherlock simply didnt have to return to the people who he was somewhat close to. but that wouldve ment living with the vampires who sherlock despised so bitterly. and perhaps, perhaps there was a teeny tiny bit of sentiment that made him return to his life as the consulting detective sherlock holmes. a sentiment was simmering inside him; he couldnt let his oh so caring brother, who still has oh so many worries about him believe he was dead when he in reality was living a lonely life with the only purpose of surviving. a sentiment to the usual everyday life. a sentiment towards his love for a good crime case. so sherlock decided to come back, with a secret that was to be kept.
