Chapter Text

Most people would say that most 10 year olds don’t have much care for worldly desires. And they would be right, most 10 year olds don’t; however Rae considered friendship to be a worldly desire, and she cared very, very so much about friendship, her friendship with Ivory, to be specific. In her 10 years of living Rae had never had a friend who she could talk with for ages quite like Ivory, they had been friends for 2 years and if Ivory had asked her to, Rae would walk the ends of the Earth with only her thoughts to keep her company. But Ivory hadn’t asked her that, and on a hot summer day like this, the only thing either of them had in mind would be to run through the sprinkler on Rae’s lawn.

“Are you gonna come over here, or are you just gonna stand there?” Ivory shouted at her from across the lawn, standing next to the already on sprinkler.

“Yeah, yeah, I'm coming,” Rae said, pausing mid-sentence as she walked over. “I was just thinking”

If you’ve ever ran through a sprinkler on a hot day, with the sun so warm it melts the skin off your back, and grass greener than a can of monster, then you might know it provides not much relief from the heat, and only for a few seconds, and it’s not very fun to just run back and forth so it really is a boring task; likewise, if you’ve ever had a friend, a real one, who you tell stories and jokes with, you might know that even the most boring activity, like paperwork, becomes fun if you are doing it with a friend. It is for these reasons that laughter and shouts could be heard from Rae’s lawn well until the late hours of the night (6:30 pm, Ivory did have to go home after all).
