I Call Dibs

Summary:

“BECAUSE, how could I leave my baby gyu like that?? You know I can’t do long-distance.” Kaiwen drags his hands over his face.

“You two aren’t even in a relationship.” Anxin is now looking at him crazily.

“YET…yet.” Arno & Anxin look at each other because the guy in front of them genuinely sounds crazy right now.

“I called dibs on him, so it counts, right?”

“Dibs? In the big year 2025?” Anxin shakes his head. Kaiwen seriously wants to punch this guy…

Kaiwen called dibs on Donggyu.

Notes:

wait, I really liked writing this one...

Work Text:

Ever since Boys II Planet ended, Donggyu feels like his best friend, Chen Kaiwen, has yet to leave his side. He was supposed to go back to Beijing the week after the show ended, but he threw a full-on tantrum in front of his entire staff, demanding to stay in Korea for whatever reason. This went on for what felt like hours as his staff finally caved and called his CEO, Lay, who was not at all happy with his artist’s behavior, but to avoid any conflicts, he eventually agreed.

Now here he is, lying in Donggyu’s bed, snuggled up against him, eyes all red and swollen from crying so much. “So, are you gonna tell me why you aren’t going back to Beijing?” Donggyu finally speaks up, patting the younger’s head.

“How could I leave you….” Kaiwen responds, voice shaky as he sniffles.

Donggyu can feel him getting even closer to his side, as if he’s trying to fuse into him. “Dude, didn’t you say they had a whole fanmeeting planned for you when you went back? Don’t you wanna see your fans, or just be on stage again??”

“Who cares, I just wanna be with you, in Korea.” Kaiwen’s still sniffling, his head nuzzled into Donggyu’s side.

Donggyu sighs heavily, getting annoyed as he starts to pry Kaiwen off him. “Alright, that’s enough cuddling, you seriously can’t still be crying..”

Kaiwen whines and groans, clinging to Donggyu like his life depends on it. “Don’t push me away!” He cries, “Just let me hold you!”

“Stop, man! It’s getting hot!” Donggyu shouts, using all his might to free himself from Kaiwen’s grasp.

But to no avail, Donggyu cannot get Kaiwen off of him. “This is just ridiculous, no grown ass man should be crying like this.” Kaiwen is now lying on top of Donggyu, his cheek pressed against his chest.

Donggyu lies there, completely defeated. “What am I supposed to do with you?” Since this was not Kaiwen’s original plan, his company did not have a room to accommodate him, so guess who’s going to be staying with him for a while?

Yep. You guessed it.

‘Cause two grown-ass men can totally live together in a one-bedroom apartment, and with Kaiwen being so tall, he couldn’t possibly fit on Donggyu’s couch. It also doesn’t help that he has a complete soft spot for his younger, puppy-like best friend.

He offered his bed to Kaiwen and told him he would set up a makeshift bed on his floor, but the younger insisted on the two sharing Donggyu’s full-sized bed.

Kaiwen falls asleep to the sound of Donggyu’s heartbeat, his grip on Donggyu’s waist being Donggyu’s only indicator that it’s okay to move him off.

Donggyu holds Kaiwen’s head as he slowly pushes him off, helping him land on the bed as he positions his head on the pillow next to him.

He lets out a deep breath, “What a big baby.” He says softly, getting up and stretching his limbs. “Jeez, how can he lie on me like that? My whole body hurts.”

With nothing better to do since Donggyu’s useless company doesn’t have anything planned for him at the moment, and Kaiwen….well, you know why he’s still here. The two of them decide to walk around the city to occupy their day. Donggyu has been fighting with the younger the entire time because he is insisting on holding hands, but he keeps slapping his hand away each time, earning a sad puppy look from Kaiwen.

“Dude, stop acting weird. Why do you wanna hold hands so bad?” At this point, Donggyu is getting agitated.

“No, you’re the one acting weird! Can’t I just hold your hand?” Donggyu can’t tell if he’s hallucinating, but he can for sure see pinned-back dog ears on his friend’s head as he keeps whining about holding hands.

“I said no, and that’s final.” Donggyu scolds him, and Kaiwen drops his head to look at the floor in defeat.

The two continue to walk down the street as they window shop, when they run into Kaiwen’s friends, Jiahao and Anxin.

Kaiwen’s mood does a complete three-sixty as he practically jumps up into the air and leaps towards them to hug them.

“Oh, so he was just putting on an act,” Donggyu says to himself as he joins the trio.

“How are you guys?? I’m surprised you’re even outside. I thought you would be too busy with your preparations.” Kaiwen says, bouncing with excitement.

Jiahao and Anxin were two of the eight winners who made their debut in ALD1, so neither of them thought they would see any of the members be out and about after the show ended.

“The company gave us the day off, they’ve been working us like dogs..” Jiahao, now Arno, says as he sips on his drink.

“But what are YOU doing here, Kaiwen?? Weren’t you supposed to go back to Beijing?” Anxin, the youngest out of the trio, says.

Kaiwen glances at Donggyu, who returns the eye contact. “Well…about that.” He laughs nervously.

“He threw a tantrum in front of his entire staff so he could stay here.” Donggyu bluntly says.

“WHAT I DID NOT!” Kaiwen shouts.

“He definitely did.” Arno and Anxin say in unison.

Kaiwen grabs both of them and looks back at Donggyu, “Let me talk to them for a second, I’ll be back, don’t miss me too long.” He gives Donggyu a cute wink, to which Donggyu rolls his eyes.

Kaiwen pushes the two ALD1 members a few feet away from Donggyu. “Guys, you can’t embarrass me in front of Gyu like that…” he whines.

“Seems like you embarrass yourself as it is, a tantrum, at your old age?” Anxin says, practically laughing in his face.

“OLD AGE? I’m only a year older than you!” Kaiwen yells, balling his hand into a fist as a threat, but putting it down right after.

“He’s right, though, Kaiwen. Why would you throw a tantrum?” Arno speaks out quietly.

“I don’t mean it like that! But, nobody can have Donggyu but me!” Kaiwen nods, pointing to himself.

“Mind you, no one but you wants him. I’ll admit he’s a very handsome guy, but I don’t think anyone but you has that kind of interest in him.” Arno says.

“No! That’s not true, plenty of the guys at the dorms wanted him! You guys just weren’t paying attention.” He cries out.

“That guy Junmin wanted Donggyu really badly! He was practically all over my baby.”

“I’m pretty sure they are just friends. Where on earth did you get that impression from?” Anxin says, looking straight up, just confused.

“Hao, you were there during the S-Class practices! You remember right??” Kaiwen is shaking Arno by the shoulders. “Please tell me you remember.”

“The only thing I remember is you staring holes into their heads instead of practicing the choreo.” Arno lightly pushes Kaiwen off.

“Yeah, because he kept wrapping his arms around my Donggyu!!”

“Well, if you cared so much, why didn’t you go and talk to them?” Anxin tilts his head.

Kaiwen lets out a heavy sigh, “Because I wasn’t good at speaking in Korean…” he says, looking defeated.

“Look how far you’ve come, though. Now you can hold full-on conversations with him,” Arno says, trying to lift Kaiwen’s spirits.

“You’re right, and now no one can stop me from stealing Donggyu’s heart!” He looks up proudly.

“Oh god, gag me with a spoon,” Anxin says, pretending to throw up.

Donggyu gets bored with waiting for Kaiwen to return, so he walks up to the trio once again, placing his hand on Kaiwen’s shoulder. “I’m gonna go back to the apartment, I’ll let you guys catch up.” He gives Kaiwen a soft smile before he walks away.

Arno & Anxin watch Donggyu walk away before immediately turning back to Kaiwen, “Apartment?” they say in unison again.

Kaiwen looks proud, “Yep, I’m staying with Donggyu until the company finds me an apartment!” His smile is big and wide.
“You have to be kidding me, there is no way they haven’t already found you one, you’re lying, aren’t you?” Anxin says, suspicious of his friend.

Kaiwen sighs, “Yeah, but I told them Donggyu was okay with me staying with him, and he is okay with it! I promise, I would never invade my baby’s place without asking him first!”

“You cried until he offered his place, didn’t you?” Arno looks unimpressed.

“No! I promise, Donggyu offered first! He just doesn’t know I told the company not to bother with finding me an apartment!”

They sigh, “Sure, Kaiwen, sure,” still not believing in their friend.

Arno gets a text from Junseo, another member of ALD1, telling him that they need to come back to the dorm as soon as possible. “Well, that’s our cue. Don’t burden Donggyu too much, okay? Let the guy breathe.”

The three hug a little harder than usual, not knowing when they’ll see each other as they both part ways.

What Arno said got Kaiwen thinking a little bit, so he picked up some food for him and Donggyu on his way home.

Donggyu hears the code on the door being punched in as he lies on his bed. The next thing he hears is his best friend yelling out his name, “OH DONGGYUUU..!!”

“I’m in the room.” He says, Kaiwen peeks his head through the door, “I got us fried chicken, are you hungry?” His smile nearly blinds Donggyu.

“I guess seeing Arno and Anxin made you really happy?” He chuckles, rubbing his eyes as he joins Kaiwen at the table in front of the TV.

“Well, yeah, but seeing you makes me even happier.” Kaiwen keeps smiling, putting his hand under his chin as he stares at Donggyu.

He almost chokes on his chicken as he looks away from the younger’s gaze, “Stop looking at me like that.”

“Like what?” Kaiwen plays dumb, as he keeps deliberately staring at Donggyu.

“Just…Just eat your chicken, man.” Donggyu says before biting into more of the chicken in his hand.

“I’d rather be eating you,” Kaiwen says under his breath while eating his chicken.
Donggyu looks up at him, putting his chicken down, “What did you say??” He says, clearly flustered.

“Nothing!” Kaiwen says in a panic, not thinking Donggyu could hear him.

“No, tell me what you said, or so god help me, I will-.” Kaiwen cuts him off before he can finish his sentence.

“I SAID NOTHING!” Kaiwen is now hiding his face, “Can we just eat our chicken..?”

Donggyu huffs, “Fine.”

The rest of the dinner time is quiet, Kaiwen sweating bullets as Donggyu stares holes into his head. Kaiwen knows this feeling oh, too well.

It’s time for bed now, and Kaiwen goes to lie down next to Donggyu, but he’s stopped by Donggyu’s leg covering his spot. “Sleep on the floor tonight.”

Kaiwen’s eyes widen, immediately frowning, “But…BUT WHY?” He exclaims.

“You know what you did, now go lie on the floor, I already made your bed.” Donggyu faces away from Kaiwen.

“But Donggyu…I haven’t slept by myself in ages, don’t do this to me…” He whines, clearly exaggerating.

“Should’ve thought about that before you said you wanted to eat me.” Donggyu looks back at him before looking away, getting more comfort.

Kaiwen’s face turns red, “SO YOU DID HEAR ME..”

“You’ve got a big mouth, how could I not hear you?”

“Please, Gyu, it won’t happen again!” He pleads with his friend.

“Until you act normally, then you can sleep with me again.” Donggyu yawns, clearly ready to go to sleep.

“Please, baby, just let me sleep with you.” The name comes out suddenly, making Kaiwen cover his mouth, and Donggyu sits up quickly.

“SEE! You are acting weird, dude.” He points at Kaiwen.

“Wait! No, I’m sorry, it just slipped out.” He pleads with Donggyu, his hands coming to hold Donggyu’s.

Donggyu slaps his hands off his, his hands coming up to pull on Kaiwen’s hair, making him yelp in pain. “You'd better explain why you’re acting so weird, or you’ll be sleeping on the streets instead.” That’s a lie, Donggyu would never put Kaiwen out on the street, but if it’ll get him to talk, so be it.

Kaiwen grabs hold of Donggyu’s hand, “OKAY! OKAY! Can you let go of me first, please?” He whines, wincing in pain.

Donggyu lets go, rubbing his head softly. Even if he’s mad at him, he didn’t mean to hurt him.

Kaiwen pulls Donggyu’s hands down lightly, keeping a tight grip on them as he thinks about how to say this without Donggyu throat punching him or something.

“Promise you won’t punch me or something.” Kaiwen looks at Donggyu, tears welling up in his eyes.

“Wha- Why are you crying?? Is it something bad? Just tell me.” Donggyu says, clearly concerned.

“You might not like what I have to say, so just promise me.” He holds out his pinky, his voice a little shaky as tears fall from his face.

“Fine, just spill it.” Donggyu interlocks their pinkies, both of them not letting go.

Kaiwen swallows hard. It hurts, as if he’s swallowed a rock. The tears keep falling as he opens his mouth and closes it again.

“Come on, it can’t be that bad,” Donggyu says, trying to reassure him.

“I CALLED DIBS ON YOU!” Kaiwen yells out, closing his eyes so he doesn’t have to make eye contact with him.

The room is silent, a little too long for Kaiwen’s liking. He opens one eye to peek, seeing a very dazed Donggyu.

“Donggyu..?” He opens both eyes now.

“What…”

Kaiwen braces for a punch or something from Donggyu.

“What does that even mean?”

“Well…I um…” Kaiwen wipes his tears.

Donggyu grabs him by the ear, Kaiwen wincing in response. He’s looking up at Donggyu; he doesn’t look angry, but he can’t tell what this look in his eyes is.

“Tell me what it means, now.” He twists Kaiwen’s ear a little.

“OKAY! Okay…back when the show was still going…I told the other trainees that I called dibs on you…” Kaiwen’s face starts burning, “and to not come near you, because…you’re mine.”

Donggyu lets go of his ear, “Seriously? Who even calls dibs on someone?” He crosses his arms, “I’m a bit offended, you know? I thought we were friends, but the whole time, you were calling dibs on me like I’m an object.” He laughs.

Why is he laughing? Kaiwen looks at him.

“So…you’re not mad at me?”

“No, I’m definitely mad at you, so you better keep talking, or you really will be on the street.”

Kaiwen sighs, “I know we didn’t talk much during the show, but I was just so nervous to approach you, and you were just so pretty, and then I was like, I can’t even speak korean so how could I talk to you? And then, I saw you chatting it up with other trainees, and I was jealous, so the best thing I could think of was calling dibs so no one else could get you before I did. And everyone was just so nice about it and was rooting for me, and here I thought they were all out to take you from me, but they all helped me get close to you, even teaching me korean so I could speak to you, and then you were so patient with me, and my heart just kept melting, and I kept falling in loving with you over and over again, so when the show ended, I was so upset because not only did we not debut, but it meant that I would have to move back to Beijing, which meant I wouldn’t be able to see you ever again, so that’s why I threw a tantrum, so I could stay with you and-”

“Whoa, slow down, cowboy…” Donggyu chuckles, patting his head.

“Please don’t be mad at me anymore, I like you so much; don’t put me on the street.” Before Kaiwen knows it, he’s crying again.

Donggyu chuckles, pulling his head into his shoulder and rubbing his shoulder. “I was just kidding about that. I know you have nowhere else to go, so stop crying.”

“I like you, Gyu…so much, it hurts..” He’s bawling now, his tears drenching Donggyu’s shirt.

Donggyu just sighs, rubbing his back and caressing his head. “What am I supposed to do about you?”

Kaiwen wraps his arms around Donggyu’s waist, holding him close. He lifts his head, leaning in to kiss Donggyu, but he puts his hand over Kaiwen’s mouth. “Easy, Wen..” he chuckles.

Donggyu can see the displeased look in his eyes, and he just keeps laughing. “Who’s the mad one now?”

“Let me kiss you…please.” He says as he pulls Donggyu’s hand off his mouth, although tempted, Donggyu stands his ground.

“Should I? You did just tell me you called dibs on me since we first met, and now you’re trying to say you like me.” He teases as Kaiwen starts whining, wiping his tears.

“BUT I DO LIKE YOU…please…” He starts crying again.

Donggyu wipes his tears, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a grown man cry as much as you do.”

“Please…I just like you so much..” He wails, sounding desperate, but he really doesn’t care right now.

“I don’t know..” Donggyu says, still teasing him, but Kaiwen has had enough, pushing him down onto the bed, softly, of course, because it’s Donggyu, kissing him square on the lips.

Donggyu doesn’t resist, letting Kaiwen do what he wants. It isn’t really a kiss; it feels more like a dog licking your face, so Donggyu pushes him off lightly. “How are you so confident, but you can’t even kiss right?”

Kaiwen pouts, his legs on either side of Donggyu’s body, “I was just excited, I promise I can kiss you good, let me do it again.”

“You’re doing a whole lot of promising today.” Donggyu laughs as Kaiwen leans in for another kiss.

The End.
