Work Text:

It starts small.

The first time Ennis reaches for Jack’s hand in public, it isn’t dramatic. It’s just… instinct.

They’re walking down the main street, past the bakery and the feed store. Jack’s talking with his hands like always, telling some story that keeps getting bigger every time he tells it. Ennis listens, half amused, half pretending not to be.

A truck drives past. Jack laughs at something he said.

And Ennis just — takes his hand.

Like it’s nothing.

Jack stumbles mid-sentence. “You—”

Ennis keeps walking. “What.”

Jack looks down at their hands, fingers laced, swinging between them like they’ve done it forever.

“You just… did that.”

“Yeah.”

“In broad daylight.”

Ennis shrugs. “Ain’t illegal.”

Jack’s grin spreads slow and bright. “Nope. Sure ain’t.”

He squeezes Ennis’s hand, and this time when they pass people, Ennis doesn’t let go.

They get bolder after that.

At the farmer’s market, Jack wraps an arm around Ennis’s waist while they wait in line. Not possessive — just close. Just warm. Ennis leans back into him without thinking, like he belongs there.

Someone compliments Jack’s shirt. Ennis says, “I picked it.”

Jack beams like he just won something.

When they sit at the outdoor café, Jack kicks his boots up and nudges Ennis’s knee. Ennis nudges back. It turns into a quiet little war of foot taps and teasing shoves until Jack reaches over and steals a quick kiss.

Not rushed.

Not hidden.

Just a simple press of lips like it’s the most normal thing in the world.

Ennis blinks at him after.

“You do that again and I’ll spill your coffee.”

Jack leans closer. “You wouldn’t dare.”

Ennis kisses him first this time.

Slow enough that Jack forgets how to breathe for a second.

A woman at the next table smiles at them like it’s sweet. And it is.

At home, it’s even softer.

Jack cooks. Ennis pretends to help but mostly just crowds him. Arms around Jack’s middle. Chin on his shoulder. Breathing in like he’s memorizing him.

“You’re clingy,” Jack says.

“Mm.”

“Say it.”

“I like touchin’ you.”

Jack turns in his arms, hands sliding up Ennis’s chest. “Yeah?”

Ennis nods once. Honest. Open.

And Jack kisses him in the middle of the kitchen, flour on his hands and all. It’s warm and unhurried and familiar. The kind of kiss that says we’ve got time.

Later, they sit on the porch swing. Jack sprawls across the bench and lays his head in Ennis’s lap. Ennis runs his fingers through Jack’s hair without even realizing he’s doing it.

Jack squints up at him. “You’re real soft lately.”

“Don’t start.”

“You love me.”

Ennis looks down at him, calm and steady and not afraid anymore.

“Yeah. I do.”

Jack smiles so wide it’s unfair.

And the best part?

It stops feeling brave.

The hand-holding.
The kisses in grocery store aisles.
Jack slinging an arm around Ennis’s shoulders.
Ennis pressing a quick kiss to Jack’s temple before heading into work.

It stops being a statement.

It just becomes life.

They’re allowed to lean into each other in line at the cinema. Allowed to dance slow at town festivals. Allowed to exist without looking over their shoulders.

One evening at a street fair, music playing soft, Jack pulls Ennis into a slow dance right there in the open.

“You’re ridiculous,” Ennis mutters.

“Yeah, but you’re dancin’ with me.”

Ennis rests his forehead against Jack’s.

People move around them. Lights glow overhead. Nobody cares.

And Ennis finally lets himself hold on with both hands.
