Work Text:
How could you love me
Seeing my hands calloused and scraped
From the destruction I have sowed?
How could you save me
Knowing that their blood is on my hands?
That it is my fault their bodies lay under grass and dirt
Or worse yet mutilated, left to rot?
How can you look me in the eyes
And not be revolted with what you see?
The murderer you see?
How can you care so deeply
Grip my hands, scarred as proof
And tell me that it wasn’t my fault?
How can you stand by my side
Knowing your life would have been better
If I wasn’t in it?
If we were just two souls who hadn’t crossed paths, wouldn’t your life have been better, lighter?
How can you do all these things, say all these things and mean them?
Don’t you know the weight of your words?
Don’t you know what it means to love someone?
To love me?
To love someone who has destroyed and broken, taken and hurt?
To love someone who has done more harm than good by merely being alive?
How could you ever love someone like me?
How could I not love you?
How could I not love you
Battered and bruised
Empty and whole
From a life you didn’t ask for?
Hands red and scarred from the weight of holding on?
How could I not save you
When you are a piece of my heart?
When you have saved my life a thousand times over
Just by being in it?
How could I not look into your eyes
As beautiful as life itself
And not love the flecks and hues I see in them?
My favourite colour
How could I not care so deeply about you?
You are the reason I am still standing
You are the reason I am still living
By your side
A place I will never give up
Even if heaven and hell bent over to ask me to do so
I will never budge
I will never change my mind
How could I ever wish we hadn’t known each other?
If our lives hadn’t intertwined, perhaps my life would have been different
But it wouldn’t have been complete.
I can’t imagine living a life not knowing you
Not loving you
Is a life wasted
I know what I’m saying
I know what it means to love someone
To love you
And I mean it.
Loving you is something I do without thinking twice
Like blinking or breathing or living
As easy as that
How could I not love you?
