the shorter the hair the harder they stare

Summary:

“So let me get this straight, you,” Jackie points a finger at Van, “Want to cut your hair and you,” her finger swings to Nat, “Want to cut it but Van’s worried you’re gonna nick them,” Nat and Van nod their heads in unison, “And for some reason you want me to be like a test dummy, did I get that right?”

“Yep, pretty much.” Van says with a grin on their face.

Or: Jackie gets drag into Van and Nat's haircutting shenanigans

Notes:

Hello everyone 👋🏻👋🏻 I wanted to give you all an update since I haven't posted in almost a month. I've started a new job which has been very draining for me so I haven't been able to write much, despite that I'm hoping to get out chapter two of 'i've looked at her' soon it's almost done it just needs a few finishing touches. After I get that out I'm going to focus on my Spider-Jackie fic because I want to get that done, but in saying that I am still going to work little by little at everything else. Now I hope you all enjoy this silly one-shot 😁 I didn't proof read so I apologise if they are any mistakes.

Work Text:

“Okay,” Jackie sighs pinching the bridge of her nose while Tweedledee and Tweedledum stare innocently at her.

Nat shrugs unbothered by the glare Jackie shots her, “I told them it would be fine since I’ve cut my own hair before,” she sends a pointed look to the redhead next to her, “But they refuse to let me do it until they’ve watched me do it on someone else first.”

“You’ve never cut hair with a knife before!” Van accuses shoving a finger at Nat.

Nat swats their hand away with a scoff. “It’s the same thing.”

“Is not.”

“Is too.”

“Right,” Jackie drawls, eyes darting between the two of them while they repeatedly slap each other’s hands, “so why would I do this?”

Nat snorts, “out of the kindness of your heart.”

“Because you left me to burn to death.” Van deadpans.

Jackie’s jaw drops, “What the hell? I literally saved you from being shred into pieces by dead cabin guy’s plane!”

“Doesn’t mean I forgive you,” Van shrugs, their lips curl into a grin. “In fact, I’ll only forgive you if you do this for me.”

“No fucking way.” Jackie shrieks, her heart feeling like its going to beat out of her chest.

“Oh, come on Jack,” Nat rolls her eyes, “It’s only hair.”

“Then you do it!”

“I’m the one who has to show off my hair cutting abilities.”

“Please Cap, I’ll never ask you for anything ever again,” Van pleads, “And I’ll never hold the leaving me to die thing over your head ever again, I’ll never even mention it.”

Jackie lets out a defeated sigh. She can already feel her composure crumbling. “How short do you want it?” She asks with a wince.

“Not too short,” They assure, and Nat slaps their shoulder. “Ow! Okay! Okay! Jesus, like to just under my ears I guess…”

“Van!” Jackie whines, “that’s super short!”

“Yeah, but I had short hair as a kid!” Van defends, “And I’ve kind of always wanted to cut it again.”

“Come on Jack think about it,” Nat intercepts with a lazy flap of her hand, “your hairs super knotted if you cut it you won’t have to worry about that.”

Jackie gasps her hand flying up to touch her hair, “It is not!” she shrieks in offense.

“It kind of is.” Nat teases with a smirk.

“Please Jackie please.” Van begs pulling their hands together and jutting out their bottom lip.

Jackie groans. “Fine,” she mumbles, “But you at least keep it long enough that my hair will still cover my ear.” She asks Nat with a pout.

“What ear?” Nat asks, she just narrowly misses the slap on the shoulder from Jackie. “Kidding, kidding.” Nat puts her hand on her chest. “You have my word Cap.”

Jackie sits rigidly in one of the chairs that they borrowed from the kitchen. Her hands curl around the rims of the seat. “Why do we have to do this outside again?” Jackie asks stiffly, very aware of the knife currently inches away from her face.

“So, we don’t get hair all over the cabin floor.” Nat mutters absentmindedly while sawing at Jackie’s hair.

“And so, we don’t have to clean up.” Van adds with a laugh.

“Right.” Jackie says curtly.

She’s still not use to the cold, going hunting with Nat on occasion has helped but Jackie’s not exactly itching to sit out here in her free time.

“I’m almost done, okay? Stop squirming you’re fine.” Nat says lowly to Jackie, in a semi comforting way.

Nat’s been really patient with her lately. Probably because she almost died but Jackie appreciates it, nonetheless. If someone told her a year ago that she would consider Nat as her closet friend, Jackie probably would’ve laughed in their face. It’s not like she hated Nat though they were never friends, sure they were friendly with each other at times, but they were just teammates.

“Alright Cap you are done.” Nat claps Jackie on the back, forcing her to stumble off the chair. “Told you I could do it.” She says smugly to Van.

“Yeah, yeah whatever.” Van waves a hand dismissively.

Jackie reaches up and plays with the hairs at the nape of her neck. She’s never had her hair this short; it feels almost as if she’s naked. Suddenly feeling self-conscious Jackie quietly asks, “Does it look weird?”

Van and Nat stop their playful bickering; they look her over for a moment and Jackie feels like she’s going to puke. Then Van grins.

“You actually look kind of hot.”

Surprise slams into Jackie. “Really?”

Van nods. “Seriously Cap you can probably pull off anything.”

Jackie bites her lip, her fingers fiddle with the end of her jacket. “It doesn’t look boyish?”

Nat raises an eyebrow. “Do you want it to look boyish?” she asks.

“I… um I don’t—”

“Then it’s not boyish!” Van cuts her off. “Now do me, I wanna do it before Tai gets back so I can surprise her.”

Van excitedly shakes their head once Nat finished cutting their hair.

“You look like a dog dude.” Nat laughs while kicking the hair away from the door.

“This is awesome,” Van smile is so wide, Jackie feels like her cheeks are hurting. “Thanks Nat.”

“You don’t need to thank me, but remember it wasn’t for free.”

“Yeah, yeah, of course name the movie and I’ll tell it after dinner tonight.” Van suddenly turns to Jackie and wraps and arm around her shoulder. “Look at us matching haircuts.”

“Practically twins.” Nat says dryly

“You think Tai and Shauna will be able to tell us apart?” Van jokes.

Jackie feels her body tense up. She hadn’t even thought about what Shauna would think. What if she gets mad? She might make Jackie sleep on the floor again. Or worse what if she hates it and thinks Jackie’s ugly now. Before her thoughts can spiral too much, she feels a hand on her shoulder. She looks up and sees Nat in front of her.

“Stop freaking out.” Nat says softly.

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

“I’m—”

“Oh my god what did you three do?”

Jackie turns and sees Shauna and Taissa standing there staring at them with their mouths hanging open.

“Your back!” Van exclaims running over to Taissa. “Whatcha think babe? I look hot?”

Tai nods wordlessly letting herself get pulled in for a kiss.

Jackie takes her eyes off them, letting herself look back at Shauna. The two of them stare at each other before Shauna walks over to Jackie taking her wrist into her hand and pulling her through the cabin. Jackie lets herself be drag while Shauna doesn’t say a word. They pass the others in the living room and Jackie can her them murmuring to each other. They make it to the bedroom where Javi is playing with Jack.

“Out.” Shauna says to him.

Javi smiles at Jackie before scrambling out of the room.

Shauna lets go of Jackie and starts pacing, muttering angrily to herself about how Van and Nat are idiots.

“Do you—Do you like it?” Jackie asks anxiously, nausea swirling in her gut.

Shauna stops her face softening once she takes Jackie in, she stands in front of her and locks her arms around Jackie’s shoulders. “I kind of love it.”

Jackie feels herself relax a smile spreading on her face. “Yeah?”

“Yeah.” Shauna says softly, looking at Jackie with gooey eyes. “It actually suits you really well.”

Jackie leans in and kisses her. She feels Shauna’s body tense with shock before slowly melting into the kiss. They pull apart and rest their foreheads together.

“Just so you know we do have scissors you guys didn’t need to hack at each other’s hair with a pocket knife.”
