Work Text:

“I just feel so,” Javadi says, waving her hands around and narrowly missing her cocktail. “Overprotected.”

Trinity, against her better judgement, snorts. “Are you seriously quoting a Britney Spears song to me right now?”

Javadi’s eyes turn to her, wide and inquisitive. “What Britney Spears song?”

“Jesus,” Trinity says, taking a large swig of her cocktail. It’s empty, she notices. “You’re too young for this conversation.”

“Screw you,” says Javadi, waving her hand in a clumsy attempt to attract the bartender. “I have been twenty-one for three whole days.”

Trinity laughs and signals to the bartender properly. Two more, she mouths, pointing to her’s and Javadi’s cosmopolitans. “Three days of having adult insight. What an absolute joy that must be,” she says, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

Javadi doesn’t seem to catch on.

“Exactly,” she says, her voice lighting up with excitement. “I have had a whole new lease of life in the last three days.”

Trinity downs half of her new cosmopolitan in one large gulp before replying. “You mean you have discovered the wonders of alcohol, Crash.”

Javadi mimics her action and drinks half of her cocktail in one go. Trinity is seriously regretting her offer of buying drinks.

“That nickname is so crass,” Javadi says, downing the rest of her cocktail. There goes this week's paycheck, Trinity thinks, as she signals to the bartender again. “Why do you stick with it?”

Trinity shrugs. “I am crass.”

“Sure you are,” Javadi laughs. “Do you think they serve food here?”

“You really think I’d bring you somewhere without a food menu?”

They order nachos and a bowl of fries to share, which Trinity thinks is awfully presumptuous.

“Don’t eat more than your share,” Trinity says, drunk and against her better judgement, slightly flirty.

Javadi just rolls her eyes. “Screw you.”

“You say that a lot for a straight girl. Something you want to share with the class?”

Another round of cocktails appears without Trinity having to signal to the bartender, and she has to admit, she’s impressed. Javadi’s eyes go wide as she reaches for her drink, avoiding eye contact. Trinity feels victorious.

“Has anyone ever told you that you’re insufferable?”

“Every day of my life,” Trinity says casually, handing over the pepper shaker.

Javadi takes it and smiles.

“So,” Trinity says, “Tell me about feeling overprotected.”

The smile Javadi gives is big and bright and full of promise.

“Well,” she starts, waving her hands in a vague gesture. Trinity smirks into her cocktail.

It’s going to be a long night.
