Chapter Text

Hiccup has always been a curious creature. He finds everything interesting and wants to know whatever he can.

That being said, he does not follow the rules of how to get the knowledge he wants. So when he heard his best friend (not dating, thank you very much), Tinker Bell had gone into the Winter Woods, well his interest was piqued, even with the trouble surrounding it.

See that’s something else you should know about Hiccup—he’s what the older fairies(née Fairy Mary), call a troublemaker. They also call Tinker Bell a troublemaker and they just happen to be the closest of friends. Both of them being curious and thirsty to find new ways to problem solve, whether or not it bends or breaks rules.

He secretly has a pet kitten named Toothless that Fawn introduced him to. He’s been thrown around and chased by it as much as he’s been lectured by Fairy Mary, and she did not hesitate to put him in his place when he acted up.

So yeah, usually he’s the cause of chaos, but not today. No Tinker Bell chose chaos today and has to deal with their friends dotting on her.

The others, however, were not reacting the same. Sitting in a healer room, waiting for a doctor, there were most of their close friends.

Rosetta, in her pink petal dress, curls falling neatly, looking like she was about two minutes away from going back to her flower hut—an adorable little thing by the way.

Next to her, Merida, in her dark blue scout uniform, leaning in and seeming far too entertained by the whole situation. She was considered the other troublemaker of the group—she was just more secretive about it.

On the the other side of the room, Fawn, her orange clothes looking a little worse than usual from dragging the animals around, just looking plain exhausted—and Hiccup couldn’t even fault her for because even he was getting tired of the chattering.

Leaning on the wall, Vidia, purple clothes perfect, not a hair out of place, looking somewhere between smug, annoyed, and secretly worried.

Everyone knew she cared about them deep down, her pride just got in the way of her showing it most of the time, especially with Tinker Bell for some reason.

In front of her was Silvermist, blue dress slightly dripping, long hair falling gracefully, eyes brimming with curiosity and open worry. She wore her emotions on her sleeve and voiced whatever came to mind.

Rapunzel, her green fading to yellow a pink dress swishing as she fluttered around slightly, not even paying attention to anyone but the other light fairy in the room.

Speaking of Iredessa, she’s currently hyperventilating in the corner, eyes wide, dress slightly crumpled from her constant movement.

And in the center of it all, perched on her chair like a throne of bad decisions, was Tinker Bell. Her dress looking just as clean as it was her first day, blonde hair in her bun, looking unbothered and slightly offended at her friends' dramatics.

Not like that would stop them. Nothing would. Hiccup was still debating whether he found their quick-to-panic attitudes offensive or annoying himself.

“Tinker Bell, what were you thinking!? You could’ve gotten badly hurt!” Iredessa grabs her head while she says this.

Dessa has always been the worrier of the group—the one who freaks out, the one who doesn’t do well in stressful situations, the overthinker.

Hiccup learned pretty quickly that you just have to agree with her and tell her calmly that you’re fine. If you do that, she’ll calm down sooner.

“But I didn’t!”

Apparently Tink hasn’t realized that yet but she keeps going anyways.

“An-And my wings, they glowed, like actually glowed” Tinker Bell sputters “Purples and blues and I’ve never seen anything like it! Have any of you had that happen? I didn’t think so.” Tink says, crossing her arms.

He hears Silvermist whisper something to Rosetta along the lines of did she hit her head and maybe she was seeing things.

Did she ever have it? Hiccup thinks about retorting, but with Tink already upset that would only fuel her more, and he wants to hear her story.

At this moment, the doctor comes in and starts working with Tink. Her grey hair catching light as she methodically touches and examines Tinker Bell’s. Moving on to making her do different excesses to check her wings.

All of which she passes, so maybe she is right. But if she is, what does that mean about the rest of what she’s saying?

Hiccup wonders what could’ve caused glowing wings. Was it the light reflecting? Is there something in the Winter Woods that makes wings glow?

Could it mean the wings are special? Or was it actually just Tink imagining it?

Then he notices everyone leaving the room and follows along—albeit slightly confused on how long he’s been lost in thought, but not minding being left out of the chaos this time.

See that’s something you should also know about Hiccup. He’s what the older fairies(née Fairy Mary), call a “troublemaker.” They also call Tinker Bell a troublemaker and they just happen to be the closest of friends. Both of them being curious and thirsty to find new ways to problem solve, whether or not it bends or breaks rules.

So yeah, usually he’s the cause of chaos, but not today. No Tinker Bell chose chaos today and has to deal with their friends dotting on her.

He follows the girls out the building and down towards a dirt path. He’s not sure why they’re still walking if Tinker Bell’s wings are fine, but he doesn’t mind it.

He’s off in thought about some orders he has to work on later when Tinker Bell starts again.

“I mean I’ve never heard of wings glowing,” she starts while turning around,”Like they sparkled and glowed guys! Fawn saw it!”

Everyone turns to look at Fawn as her eyes widened and she spluttered,

“What!? I mean I didn’t exactly see them glow or anything but I definitely saw you,” she says pointing a finger,“in the Winter Woods shivering.”

“Aha! I should go back and figure out why!”

“NO”

“Absolutely not”

“Tinker Bell!”

The group choruses their disapproval.

Well, most of them do. Hiccup notices that along with himself, Merida and Silvermist stay quiet.

Rosetta steps closer to her, her dress moving as she does.

“Why don’t you just see if there’s anything in the library sugar?”

“Tinker Bell has a point. I mean it can’t be that bad of an idea.” Everyone turns to Hiccup, seemingly forgotten he was there. Meanwhile, Tinker Bell’s face lights up.

“See! I knew I could count on you Hiccup!” Tink says, shooting him a playful wink. He really did understand where she was coming from, sure it was against the rules but so was using lost things and look how that turned out! I mean if he could go too he woul- WAIT!

“Y’know Tink,” Hiccup says leaning towards her,”I think you should take me with you. Then you guys can’t just say she’s seeing things.”

He ignores the sputters and gasps and focuses on one sentence. The one he knew would come because he’s not the only one curious and he knows that.

“I can tell anyone who sees y’all that you’re just helping me check for reports we’ve gotten!”

Thank Fairy Mary for Merida. Sometimes they can't really understand what she says, but she means good. Her hunter outfit is the most different from the rest of theirs. Hers not having petals or leaves as the base, but actual cloth and a token bow-and-arrow.

“Merida! Don’t encourage them!” Rosetta narrows her eyes and glares at Merida, clearly not amused.

Rosetta never lets us have our fun, Hiccup thinks.

Actually, none of them seem to find it fun. All of them sharing glances and glares towards Merida for egging Hiccup and Tink on. They all remember how much trouble Tink got in before everyone accepted lost things, and didn’t want that to happen again.

Merida, however, is not having it.

”And why not?! Tinker Bell may have a history of not listening to the rules, but that worked out! We use lost things all the time now, so why is this such a bad idea?”

Merida and Rosetta keep going back and forth as the rest of the group moves along the dirt path, Hiccup and Tinker Bell both suspiciously quiet.

Later that night, Hiccup decided to visit Tinker Bell to see if she had found anything. And maybe see if she was serious about going back.

Tinkers Nook was almost quiet. Almost. It was never truly quiet—there was always someone working, a machine whirring, maybe even some animals that have yet to lay down for the night.

It wasn’t hard to find her, hiding away in her cottage. A little bit bigger than his own, with a yellow door and brown roof. Hiccup loves his own though so no complaints there.

Hiccup knocks on the yellow door, waits for a little while, then doubt creeps in as he hears the birds stop chirping.

This is taking longer than it should, Hiccup thinks as he starts to turn around.

Then the door flies inwards, with a flustered looking Tinker Bell behind it. Hair falling on her shoulders, wearing what looks like human pajamas but smaller and made out of leaves on. Her face flushed light pink and heavy breathing, seeming prepared to defend herself until she recognizes the person at her door.

“Oh! It’s just you, come on in Hic.”

See Hiccup doesn’t let anyone but Tink call him that. It’s something she started on his first day as a tinker and never stopped. It’s yet another thing that makes the rumors grow.

With a wave of her hand, he follows in. He watches from the doorway as she grabs some hand-made clothes from a hidden corner of the room.

Ah so she is planning on going back.

“I went to the library today looking for a book about the glowing wings. When I finally found one it had missing parts of the page! Stinkin’ bookworms Hiccup!” Tinker Bell says, stomping her foot down on the last sentence.

It’s well known that Tinker Bell has a temper. It’s also well known that she’s usually right, so who are the fairies to complain?

“I know Tink, I went there straight after we left the healing fairy office.” Hiccup starts shifting on his feet, unsure of if Tinker Bell will truly let him come along or if she wants to go alone.

There’s only one way to find out.

“So…Would you let me come along with you? I mean I see you’re making warmer clothes and I’m really curious about the Winter Woods—a-and I can help convince the others about your wings!”

Tinker Bell laughs—a jingle sound, wings fluttering with newfound excitement.

“Of course! I’d love to have another fairy traveling with me! I think we should go tomorrow with the next delivery of the baskets.”

Hiccup glances around the room, debating a place to sit while they perfect the details. His eyes catch on a wooden desk and chair next to it.

Hiccup makes his way over and sits down at the desk, analyzing the clothes set out. Well, he didn’t even consider making different clothing yet, but that’s expected with him being newer.

“So, you want to make me some matching clothes, Tink?” He says, looking at her with a mischievous smile that he’ll deny later.

“Oh absolutely, scoot over.”

And that’s how they start their planning.
