Chapter 1: The Thousand-Year Contract
The post office rarely brought anything other than utility bills and local supermarket flyers, but that black envelope—made of paper so thick it felt like leather—had shattered the monotony of his new life in Kuoh. Ichigo sighed, letting the steam from his coffee momentarily fog his eyes. He had sought this anonymity with a quiet desperation. Following the Winter War, the silence from the Soul Society had become a concrete wall. Not a single black butterfly, no trace of spiritual pressure in the air, not even the echo of Renji’s laughter. They had departed, taking with them the part of him that knew how to fly, leaving him anchored to an earth that now felt far too heavy.
His friends, those who had bled by his side, now walked paths he could no longer see. Dinners became choreographies of politeness; empty words about exams and jobs that Ichigo uttered while feeling the hollow in his chest where a King once roared. Years passed that way: a bittersweet graduation, travels through Europe, the study of languages no one else spoke, and finally, sanctuary in Kuoh. A small gym, a kitchen of his own where the scent of spices filled the void, and a few dates with girls who had no clue the man across from them had once held up the sky to keep it from collapsing.
He was happy. Or so he told himself every morning in front of the mirror.
However, the man sitting on his sofa looked like a blotch of color far too vibrant for Ichigo’s mortal reality. He had hair the color of fresh blood and unblinking turquoise eyes—a predatory stillness disguised as aristocratic courtesy. He wore a suit that cost more than all the furniture in the apartment and smiled with a kindness that made the hair on the back of Ichigo’s neck stand up.
"It is a curious situation, Kurosaki-kun," the red-haired man said, his voice like velvet brushing against an open wound.
On the coffee table, the paper rested like a death sentence. Ichigo read it once, twice, three times, feeling his pulse begin to hammer in his ears. Trespassing. Structural damage. Breaking and entering. Theft. The charges were absurd, a list of crimes that he, in his meticulous and boring new life, would never have dreamed of committing. But what chilled his blood wasn’t the lawsuit itself; it was the name of the property mentioned in the document and the wax seal crowning the page—a crest that belonged to no government office in Japan.
"I... I don't remember trespassing on any property," Ichigo managed, his own voice sounding foreign to him, as if it were rusted from disuse. He tried to search his memory through those empty years. "I was a bit of a troublemaker in my teens, sure. I went some places without an invitation," he added, and for a second, the memory of torn skies over the Seireitei and the infinite dunes of Hueco Mundo flashed through his mind like lightning. "But I know nothing about this."
A low, almost musical laugh vibrated in the chest of the man across from him.
"Of course you don’t remember," the stranger said with a softness that set Ichigo on edge. He reached into his coat and pulled out a mobile phone of a craftsmanship Ichigo didn't recognize; the design was too sleek, too perfect. "Let me refresh your memory."
The man slid his finger across the screen and placed it on the wooden table. Ichigo leaned in, feeling the air grow heavier with every passing second.
"Shit..." he whispered.
On the screen, the image was chaotic, shrouded in a mist of spiritual static that made the recording tremble. There he was. Or what he used to be. A nightmare creature with long horns and a wild mane, roaring as a Cero of absolute red erased an entire mountain range from the map, turning the ground into a sea of lava and ash. Then the image jumped: strange creatures, beings Ichigo had never seen among the ranks of Shinigami or Hollows, began to swarm the crater, only to be intercepted by a new figure. It was himself again, but clad in golden bone armor—a silent executioner wielding a sword that seemed forged from the very essence of hell. In the video, Ichigo wasn't just cutting through monsters; he was slashing the very fabric of reality, leaving cracks that oozed dark energy before the screen faded to black.
Ichigo looked up, the color draining from his face. His hands, which moments ago had calmly held a cup of coffee, were now trembling slightly.
"I am Sirzechs," the man said, the kindness on his face taking on a new and terrifying depth. "Sirzechs Lucifer, the ruler of the Underworld. I am glad to finally meet the young man who caused me so many headaches a few years ago."
Sirzechs leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. With one finger, he pushed the document a little closer to Ichigo, nearly brushing his knuckles.
"Now," he continued, leaning back into the sofa with a comfort that belied the weight of his words, "let’s talk about the payment for the damages."
Ichigo closed his eyes and let out a long sigh, heavy with bitter resignation. The silence of the Soul Society now had a much more sinister explanation: it wasn't that they had forgotten him; they had simply left him alone so the landlord could come to collect the bill. He tried to swallow, but his throat felt as dry as sand. To hell with it all. The Devil himself was sitting in his living room, smiling at him like an old friend, and by the way he was looking at him, Ichigo knew his soul was the only thing valuable enough to settle the debt.
"All the consequences of your intrusion have already been settled," Sirzechs said, dismissing the matter with an elegant wave of his hand. "Political and logistical issues, mostly. To be honest, I was surprised by how quickly the Soul Society washed their hands of the whole thing, despite two of their own also being in my territory. But no matter; dealing with old man Yamamoto isn't exactly something I enjoy."
Sirzechs let out a languid smile, but his turquoise eyes sharpened, locking onto the former Shinigami.
"Only one pending matter remains, and that is you, Kurosaki-kun."
"What do you want from me?" Ichigo asked. The knot in his stomach tightened; he knew that look. It was the same one the Captains gave him whenever they were about to ask him to save the world again.
"Hahaha, relax. I don't want your soul," Sirzechs laughed, though a strange glint crossed his gaze. "At least, not in that way."
He pulled another sheet from inside his suit—a parchment that seemed to vibrate with an ancient, dense energy of its own.
"I want a contract with you."
"A contract?" Ichigo frowned, staring at the paper as if it might bite him.
"You have assimilated the power of death from Hell," Sirzechs explained, his tone turning solemn for the first time. "Something never seen before. Something only the original Lucifer had been able to claim as the ruler of those lands abandoned by the Biblical God. That makes you a very... interesting ally for me."
Ichigo blinked, completely lost among terms he couldn't quite piece together. Biblical God? Original Lucifer? Sirzechs noticed the confusion and let out an amused sigh.
"I will explain the details of the world to you later. For now, read this. There is no fine print, Kurosaki-kun. No traps. What you see is what you get."
Ichigo took the paper. His eyes scanned the lines of perfect calligraphy: Ichigo Kurosaki shall act as a formal ally of the Devil Faction... He shall answer only to the direct orders of the Crimson Satan, Sirzechs Lucifer... He shall have the right to accept or reject missions based on his own judgment, maintaining his individual freedom...
"So far, it sounds like an office job," Ichigo muttered, continuing to read.
He must intervene in the capture of entities escaping the Chains of Hell... He shall be granted financial compensation according to his services...
Everything seemed strangely fair, almost mundane, until he reached the final line. Ichigo felt his heart stop for a second.
"A duration of a thousand years?" His eyes widened, searching the red-haired man’s face for an explanation.
Sirzechs smiled with a warmth that was almost paternal, yet could not hide his eternal nature.
"Oh, don't worry. There will be no need to extend it. Our relationship will be prosperous and peaceful; by then, we can continue collaborating without the need for paperwork."
With a snap of his fingers, a silver pen appeared out of thin air, floating before Sirzechs took it and held it out. His eyes glowed with supernatural intensity—an invitation that felt more like a mandate of destiny.
"May I have your signature?"
Ichigo took the pen, feeling the cold metal against his skin. He looked at the sofa in his small home, at the quiet life he had worked so hard to build, and then at the man who represented everything he had tried to leave behind.
"Is it too late to say I need a lawyer?" he asked with a bitter grimace.
Sirzechs let out a genuine laugh. "Don't worry, Ichigo-kun. I assure you the future will be bright. I’ll explain everything once you sign."
With a steady hand, but carrying the weight of a thousand years on his shoulders, Ichigo signed his name on the parchment. In that instant, the paper burst into sparks of crimson light and vanished along with the pen. The air in the room shifted; the spiritual pressure Ichigo thought was dead vibrated faintly in his marrow, like an engine roaring back to life after years of neglect.
"Good," Sirzechs said, giving a clap that echoed like thunder in the small apartment.
Beneath their feet, a magic circle of astonishing geometric complexity lit up, bathing the walls in red.
"As promised, let me explain exactly what you've gotten yourself into."
In a heartbeat, the wooden walls, the scent of coffee, and the safety of Kuoh vanished, swallowed by a scarlet light that tore them away from the world of the living.
The world didn't simply fade; it fractured. The ceiling of Ichigo’s apartment splintered into a thousand shards of reality that fell like broken glass, revealing a sky that knew no sun. It wasn't the pale blue of Kuoh, but a suffocating firmament tinged with a bilious crimson and streaked by ashen clouds that never moved.
Ichigo felt the tug in his navel—that familiar, hated sensation of dimensional travel—but this time the air didn't smell of common sulfur. It smelled of something far more ancient: stagnant sin.
"Welcome back, Kurosaki-kun," Sirzechs whispered, walking beside him as if they were merely strolling through a royal garden.
First, the ground beneath their feet turned to damp, black stone. They were in the First Level, a labyrinth of stone cubes that defied gravity. Ichigo looked up to see colossal blocks floating in the void, connected by chains as thick as oak trunks that groaned with every vibration in the air. The silence was absolute, broken only by the distant echo of wails that didn't sound human.
They continued to descend without touching the ground, cocooned in the Devil King’s protective aura as they crossed into the Second Level. Heat struck Ichigo’s face like a red-hot sledgehammer. Below stretched an ocean of putrid brown—a sea of mud and despair where the souls of sinners splashed eternally, reaching for a shore that did not exist. Giant, ghost-white flowers sprouted from the muck, exhaling a pollen that burned Ichigo’s lungs, reminding him of the weight of his own sins.
"This place has fascinating architecture, don't you think?" Sirzechs remarked with analytical coldness. "Even for us devils, this sector is... prohibitive."
They crossed the Third Level, where the landscape became a nightmare of volcanic stone. Rivers of phosphorescent yellow acid wound through the crags, dissolving the very rock in perpetual erosion. Ichigo remembered the smell: the stench of sulfur and burnt flesh that had clung to his skin during his battle against Kokutō. He saw them then—the Kushanada, Guardians of Hell, lurking in the shadows of the caves, their hollow eyes fixed on the intruder who had once donned their golden armor. The stone giants did not attack; they simply watched as their "executioner" returned by the Devil’s side.
Finally, the light changed. The red shifted into a deep, almost black violet. They had reached the Heart of Hell.
Here, space seemed to expand into infinity. There were no walls, only an abyss where the Chains of Hell converged like the veins of a colossal organism. In the center, floating over a void that devoured light, stood a structure of bone and obsidian pulsing with rhythmic energy. It was the core of the punishment system—the engine that kept the gates locked tight.
Ichigo landed on a platform of polished stone, feeling the spiritual pressure of the place attempt to crush him. He pressed a hand to his chest; the hollow where he once felt nothing was now vibrating violently. Hell recognized him. The contract he had just signed wasn't just a piece of paper; it was a key beginning to turn in a lock he himself had helped forge.
"Look around you, Ichigo," Sirzechs said, gesturing toward the vastness of the abyss. "You didn't just destroy this place. You became part of its machinery. And now, as my ally, we are going to ensure that no one else tries to claim what you left down here."
Ichigo stared into the deep darkness of the Heart, where shadows seemed to whisper his name. The peace of Kuoh felt like a dream from another life.
Sirzechs stopped before a structure that defied all architectural logic. It was a stone altar surrounded by green columns that looked like fingers emerging from the earth, guarding a fiery glow that stained the horizon a sickly yellow. Above the site, a colossal skeleton remained chained—a relic of forgotten eras serving as a reminder that, in this place, even death has an owner.
"Let us begin with this site," Sirzechs said, his voice resonating with an authority that seemed to vibrate through the rocks themselves. "This place was not created as the Underworld where we devils reside. This existed long before. The Biblical God, the Soul King, the Primordial Dragons... I do not know for certain. But our home was built upon the foundations of this abyss. This is forbidden ground; only a few of us know its location, and even fewer have dared to walk here."
With a fluid motion, Sirzechs dissolved the protective bubble surrounding them. The change was instantaneous. The air became as heavy as lead, and the Chains of Hell—like hungry metal serpents—lashed out from the darkness toward them. The Kushanada roared, emerging from the shadows with blind fury, only to stop dead in their tracks when Sirzechs reactivated the barrier at the very last second. The thunder of metal hitting the ground and the sudden silence of the guardians created an electric atmosphere.
"As you can see, anyone who sets foot on this land is considered an intruder. Even me," Sirzechs commented with icy calm. Suddenly, he placed a hand on Ichigo’s chest and, with a firm shove, launched him outside the safety perimeter.
"What the hell?!" Ichigo barked, spinning on his heels as he waited for the imminent strike of chains or the claws of giants.
But nothing happened. The chains remained inert, and the Kushanada—who moments ago had been salivating for his blood—now bowed their heads in a sign of mute recognition.
"Everyone is an intruder, Kurosaki-kun... except for two," Sirzechs continued, his smile widening under the glow of the lava pit. "The original Lucifer, and you. Hell itself has recognized you. The reason why is a mystery even I haven't decoded, but the fact is irrefutable. You have become an existence of paramount importance, both politically and militarily."
Sirzechs walked toward the edge of the altar, where the heat was so intense the air itself distorted. He peered into the depths of the igneous pit, his red suit blending with the dancing flames.
"The original Satans are dead," he stated, without a trace of remorse. "We, the elite devils, took their place despite having no blood relation to them. We have maintained a fragile balance—a peace hanging by a thread due to the descendants of the old kings and the elders who still see us as usurpers. That is why I need you. Walking beside the one who possesses the essence of the original Lucifer will legitimize our rule. You will give us the power to subdue the traditionalists and put a leash on the old guard. You understand, don't you, Ichigo-kun?"
Ichigo nodded in silence, feeling the heat from the pit searing his skin. The weight of being a political symbol was a burden he never wanted, but Sirzechs’ gaze left no room for doubt.
"Good," the Devil King said, and for a moment, the kindness on his face was replaced by absolute resolve. "It’s time for you to be whole."
"Huh?" was all Ichigo managed to utter.
Before he could react, Sirzechs reached out and shoved him directly into the pool of pulsing lava at the center of the altar. Ichigo’s scream was swallowed by the roar of the flames as he plunged into the burning abyss. Sirzechs didn't move; he simply watched with a smile as the fires of Hell claimed their new sovereign.
The cry died before it could be born, choked by a tide of fire that didn't consume his flesh but devoured his very reality. At the epicenter of the heat, time fractured. Disconnected images struck his mind with the force of a hammer: a being of blinding light and static, stripped of its limbs; an old man with an infinite beard whose gaze weighed like lead; the familiar silhouette of a man shrouded in shadows who looked far too much like Zangetsu; and then, the colossi. A red dragon whose wingspan covered the sky, and a multi-headed beast roaring against the void.
The puzzle of the universe unfolded before him: the cycle of reincarnation, the control of souls, the chains holding the balance, and finally, a figure that brought it all to a halt. A man with silver hair and five pairs of bat-like wings as black as the abyss—one whose death was not an end, but a legacy seeking a vessel.
Outside the pit, Sirzechs was forced to take flight. The air became solid, a spiritual pressure so dense that the Devil King gritted his teeth, feeling his own aura struggle not to be crushed. The lava stopped bubbling, turning instead into a raging sea of pure energy.
Suddenly, a dome of chains erupted from the magma, lashing against the walls of the abyss with a metallic crack that shook the very foundations of the Underworld. When the links unfurled, darkness reclaimed the chamber. Five pairs of black wings deployed, occupying every corner of the altar and exuding an authority that made the very oxygen ache.
Ichigo floated in the center. Armor made of polished bone, etched with runes pulsing in blood-red, encased his body. But the most striking change was his hair: the vibrant orange had vanished, replaced by a pure, shimmering silver that swayed as if submerged in water, charged with raw potency.
Sirzechs couldn't stop a triumphant smile from crossing his face. He hadn't been wrong. The experiment, the risk, the debt... it was all worth it for what stood before him.
"How does it feel, Ichigo Kurosaki?" Sirzechs asked, letting his voice cut through the static of power. "Or should I say... Ichigo Lucifer?"
Ichigo closed his eyes for a second, letting the torrent of strength circulate through his veins. He could feel the heartbeat of Hell beneath his feet, the vibration of every chain, and the whisper of every damned soul. He was no longer a stranger in a hostile land; he was the master of the house.
"It feels good," Ichigo replied, his voice carrying a dual echo—a resonance that seemed to come from the depths of a cavern. "Though I’m still Kurosaki, thank you very much."
"Of course, of course," Sirzechs replied with almost comic lightness, approaching as Ichigo’s aura began to recede. "Well, with the matter settled and the bill collected, let’s get out of here."
Before following the Devil King toward the transport circle already forming in the air, Ichigo looked down at the stone floor. Below, in the gloom of the abyss, hundreds of Kushanada remained kneeling in deathly silence. Their eyes, once beacons of hatred and punishment, now glowed with absolute recognition toward their new lord.
With a crimson flash, they both vanished. Silence returned to the Heart of Hell, and the chains fell inert once more, awaiting the next command from the one who now carried the heritage of the Fall.
The halls of the Gremory mansion were not mere corridors; they were galleries of an opulence that made the palaces of the Soul Society look austere. Ichigo walked behind Sirzechs, struggling to match his nonchalant stride, acutely aware of how the maids would pause and press themselves against the walls. They bowed their heads not only to their lord but to the icy, ancestral pressure now emanating from the orange-haired young man.
They arrived at a drawing room seemingly designed for giants or gods. There, light filtered through stained-glass windows, bathing the floor in hues of amethyst and gold. A man of aristocratic bearing, dressed in a pristine white suit, tensed visibly the moment Ichigo crossed the threshold. Beside him, a woman of serene beauty, with chestnut hair falling in perfect waves and violet eyes shimmering with sharp intelligence, maintained an enigmatic smile.
"Mother, Father," Sirzechs announced with the casual tone of someone introducing a college friend. "This is the one I told you about."
Feeling entirely out of place amidst the silk and marble, Ichigo improvised a slight bow. The man in the white suit stood up, his eyes locked onto Ichigo’s as if trying to read his family tree within his pupils.
"My..." he managed, extending a hand with a mix of caution and fascination. "A pleasure. I am Zeoticus Gremory."
The moment their palms met, Zeoticus felt a slight tremor. It wasn't just raw strength; it was a vibration in the air, a frequency that hadn't been heard in the Underworld for eons.
"Truly incredible," Zeoticus murmured, his smile becoming more genuine. "You carry his very essence."
Venelana Gremory rose with a grace that made time itself seem to stand still. She offered her hand, and driven by an instinct Ichigo didn't know he possessed—perhaps an echo of the original Lucifer’s nobility slumbering in his blood—he took it and placed a soft kiss on the back of her hand.
"My, it seems someone has manners," she laughed, her violet eyes dancing with amusement. "I am Venelana Gremory."
"The pleasure is mine," Ichigo replied, returning to his usual stance, though he felt the heat rising slightly up his neck.
"Ichigo will be staying here for a while," Sirzechs dropped the bombshell, causing Ichigo’s eyes to snap wide. He didn't remember that being in the thousand-year contract. "I’d like you to help him with history lessons, Mother. He needs to carry himself well among devils; we wouldn't want to give a bad impression, would we, Ichigo-kun?"
Sirzechs flashed him a conspiratorial grin—the kind that didn't take "no" for an answer.
"Whatever you say, Sirzechs," Ichigo sighed, resigned to his fate. "I’ll be in your care, Venelana-san."
"Please, just Venelana," she corrected with a warmth reminiscent of a mother, yet with the edge of a queen.
"Right then," Sirzechs concluded, turning on his heel. "Make yourself comfortable, Ichigo. I have to get to work; being Satan doesn't happen by itself."
"What about my missions?" Ichigo managed to ask.
"Don't worry. Just learn a bit about our world for now. We’ll talk business later," Sirzechs called back as his figure receded down the hall.
Venelana wasted no time. She took Ichigo’s hand with gentle firmness and began leading him toward the inner wings of the mansion.
"Come along, Ichigo-kun. Take a bath, and I’ll give you some clothes to get comfortable in. We shall begin the lessons immediately," she declared with a smile that promised to be exhausting.
Behind them, Zeoticus remained silent, watching his wife lead the young hybrid away. He looked down at his own hand—the one that had shaken Ichigo’s. He could still feel the trace of power; it was a dark, lordly energy, terribly familiar. Lucifer hadn't truly died; he had simply been waiting for someone with shoulders broad enough to carry his crown of shadows.
Ichigo walked through the mansion’s halls feeling strangely light after his bath. The steam had cleared some of the mental fog, but the opulence still felt alien to him. The marble, the silks, and the maids who insisted on dressing him as if he were made of glass were all too much. He had dismissed the last one with a tense smile; after years of looking after himself in Karakura, he could button a shirt without help. The suit they had left for him—an impeccably cut, jet-black Italian design—hugged his shoulders with military precision, making his orange hair stand out like a flame in a cave.
He followed the trail of Venelana’s presence, an energy that felt like an aged wine: intoxicating but with a base of iron. As he crossed the threshold, the sheer scale of the library hit him. It wasn't a room; it was a sanctuary of knowledge, with bookshelves that disappeared into the shadows of the ceiling and the comforting scent of old paper and leather.
He found her in a secluded corner, bathed in the warm glow of a floor lamp. Venelana was reaching for a volume bound in dark leather, but the shelf was just out of reach. Without much thought, Ichigo stepped up behind her. His height and long stride brought him within inches of her. As he extended his arm to retrieve the book, his chest brushed lightly against her back. The air filled with a scent of cinnamon and sweets, causing Ichigo to catch his breath for an instant; it was a fragrance far too human for a being that supposedly wasn't.
"Thank you very much, Ichigo-kun," she said, turning with a smile that barely concealed a spark of mischief. As she accepted the book, her fingers brushed his with a deliberate slowness before she stepped past him, leaving a trail of warmth in her wake.
Ichigo stood there, his arm still raised. Can’t these people fly? he thought with a grimace, watching Venelana walk away with a sway of her hips that seemed choreographed. He sighed, shaking his head to clear the thought, and sat in the single armchair across from her.
"Now," Venelana said, spreading the heavy tome open on the coffee table. "Let’s start from the beginning, Ichigo-kun. To understand who you are now, you must understand where we come from."
Her voice shifted, growing deep, like a storyteller narrating the creation of the world.
"At the dawn of time, when the Biblical God was molding the light, the shadows also claimed their space. We devils were not born of nothing; we are the children of the Seventy-Two Pillars, the original families that rose from the first Lucifer. He was the Morning Star, the angel who defied the system and fell to create his own kingdom in the cracks of the universe."
Venelana pointed to an illustration in the book depicting a family tree bathed in blood and gold.
"Our race is divided into the 'Pure-Blooded Devils.' For millennia, we were ruled by the strength and lineage of the Original Satans: Lucifer, Beelzebub, Leviathan, and Asmodeus. But do not be mistaken, Ichigo; our history is one of perpetual war. The Great War between Angels, Fallen Angels, and Devils nearly extinguished us all. It was a butchery that lasted eons, where the Biblical God and the four Satans perished, leaving a vacuum that nearly devoured the Underworld."
She leaned forward, locking her gaze with his.
"What Sirzechs didn't explicitly tell you is that, following that war, we devils had to evolve to avoid vanishing. We created the Evil Pieces system to bolster our ranks, reincarnating other races as devils. But you... you are different. You aren't someone reincarnated by a chess piece. You are a bearer of the primordial essence—the legacy of the Lucifer who existed before politics and power games stained our name."
Ichigo listened in silence, processing the scale of her words. In the Soul Society, they spoke of centuries; here, they spoke of creation itself and a hierarchy that made the Thirteen Court Guard Squads look like a mere footnote.
"And the others?" Ichigo asked, his voice low. "The ones who don't agree with Sirzechs."
Venelana closed the book with a sharp thud that echoed through the library.
"Those are the 'Old Satans.' Descendants who believe that lineage is everything and that war must continue until nothing remains. To them, you are a blasphemy... or the ultimate tool to reclaim the throne. That is why it is vital for you to learn. In the Underworld, a single misstep doesn't just cost you your life—it costs you eternity."
Venelana closed her eyes for a moment, as if the weight of centuries fatigued her sight, before picking up the thread of her story. The light in the library seemed to dim, turning an intimate shade of violet.
"What you see today—this apparent peace—is a garden built upon a graveyard of ashes," she continued, her voice dropping an octave. "After the deaths of the Original Satans in the Great War, the Underworld fell into chaos. The descendants of those kings, the 'Old Satans,' sought not the prosperity of our race, but an eternal war that would have led to our total extinction. My son, Sirzechs, along with Serafall and the others, had to rise in a bloody Civil War to stop that madness."
Ichigo noticed a shadow of pride, but also of pain, in the woman’s eyes.
"They won, yes. But winning a war is easy compared to winning a peace. Sirzechs is trying to create a world where we devils are not just monsters who devour souls or suicidal warriors. He wants a system where meritocracy and coexistence have a place. But the foundations are fragile. The descendants of the ancient kings still linger in the shadows, conspiring, waiting for the moment Sirzechs’ system shows a crack so they can sink their claws in and drag us back to the era of blood."
Venelana stood and walked toward a large window showcasing the purple sky of the Underworld.
"Sirzechs spent years debating this, Ichigo. It was not an impulsive decision. Ever since you broke into that primordial Hell—since your feats and your courage reached his ears after that winter war of yours—he knew of you. He watched you from a distance. He saw a young man who sacrificed everything for a world that, in the end, turned its back on him with silence. He saw someone who doesn't fight for lineage or orders, but for what is right."
She turned toward him, her silhouette framed against the supernatural light from outside.
"The contract... it’s a formality, a safety net for the old councilors who still demand papers and seals. But Sirzechs took a leap of faith with you. He firmly believes that once you see what we are trying to build here, you will find yourself in sympathy with our cause. We have committed atrocities, I won’t lie to you; we are devils, it is in our historical nature. But we are trying to change. And you are the missing piece on the board."
Ichigo clenched his fists, feeling the fabric of the expensive suit against his skin. Responsibility was calling him again, but this time it wasn't a command from the Gotei 13; it was a plea for help from someone who seemed to understand the weight of solitude.
"You are not just a weapon, Ichigo-kun. You are the living reminder that the power of the original Lucifer can coexist with the desire to protect, not destroy. The rebels and the descendants of the Satans fear you because they cannot control you, and Sirzechs needs you because you are the only one capable of looking those monsters in the eye and telling them their time is over."
Venelana returned to the table and picked up another biscuit, offering it to Ichigo with a soft smile that disarmed any lingering tension.
"So, for now, forget the thousand years in the contract. Just tell me... would you be willing to help a group of devils who simply want to stop being the villains of history?"
Ichigo took the biscuit, looking first at Venelana’s hand and then at his own fingers, which still carried the memory of steel. A weary sigh escaped his lips, but his eyes sparked with that determination that had once made the heavens tremble.
"I guess I can't leave Sirzechs alone with this whole mess, can I?" Ichigo replied with a half-smile. "But don't expect me to wear a crown. I'll just do my job."
Venelana let out a melodic giggle. "Oh, dear, in this world, sometimes the job is wearing the crown, whether you like it or not. But we shall discuss that once we finish with political geography. Now, tell me, what do you know about the Heaven and Fallen Angel factions? Because I’m afraid they, too, will begin to feel your 'presence' very soon."
The hours vanished amidst tales of ancient wars and forgotten hierarchies. Ichigo, whose curiosity had been piqued in a way even he hadn't expected, seemed ready to keep questioning every detail, but Venelana, with elegant firmness, had to stop him. She led him—almost dragging him along—to the great dining hall, where a banquet fit for royalty awaited under the warm light of the chandeliers.
Zeoticus met them at the foot of the table with a satisfied smile, observing how the orange-haired young man moved with a natural etiquette that bordered on perfection. Without a single faltering movement, Ichigo pulled out Venelana’s chair with a subtle bow, waited for her to settle, and then took his own seat.
"And so, Ichigo," Zeoticus began, breaking the silence with evident intrigue, "what do you think of this small glimpse into our history?"
"It’s fascinating," Ichigo replied, his voice steady. "The millennia, the eras... the sheer magnitude of history is, quite simply, fascinating."
Venelana, with a spark of excitement in her crimson eyes, chimed in as the first courses were served.
"And we’ve barely scratched the surface of the Three Factions, Ichigo-kun. We still have all the mythological pantheons to cover," she added with a suggestive smile. "Even those of your homeland—Japanese mythology. I’m sure they never explained any of that to you, did they?"
"No," Ichigo admitted simply. "It's not like I went around asking for it, either."
"But that isn't right, lad," Zeoticus stated with pride. "Don't you worry, my wife will see to it that you learn everything you need to know. We are devils, yes, but we don't like taking advantage of someone else's ignorance... at least not in this house."
At that moment, a feast of exotic aromas and Underworld delicacies flooded the table. Venelana leaned forward slightly, her gaze locking onto Ichigo’s with an intensity that made the air feel heavy.
"Eat well, Ichigo-kun," she said, her smile charging the atmosphere with an almost tangible double meaning. "A rather busy night awaits us."
Ichigo felt the weight of the insinuation but decided to brush it off. He assumed it was simply the nature of such beings. Calmly, he took a bite of the food, letting the unfamiliar flavors confirm that, indeed, his world had just become much larger.
The library, steeped in a twilight broken only by the flicker of candles and the subtle aura emanating from the shelves, felt far more private now than the opulent dining hall. Venelana walked with a slow pace, the rustle of her dress against the wooden floor the only sound competing with Ichigo’s steady breathing. She stopped before a display case of dark glass and, with an elegant gesture, invited Ichigo closer as she picked up the thread of their conversation with a gravity that signaled the importance of the secret she shared.
"What Ajuka Beelzebub achieved, Ichigo-kun, was not just a technical breakthrough; it was a miracle of existential engineering," she began, her voice flowing like silk in the silence of the room. "You must understand that our race, despite its immense power, was mortally wounded. The Great War didn't just take our warriors; it took our future. Our birth rate is so low that, had it not been for Ajuka’s ingenuity, pure-blooded devils would have become a legend in less than a century."
Venelana turned to look him directly in the eyes, her figure silhouetted by the dying light of the library. She explained how the Evil Pieces functioned as a system of reincarnation: fragments of pure power based on human chess that allowed beings of other species to be transformed into devils. She detailed the vital importance of this process, where a single King could rebuild his lineage by recruiting external talent, granting them specific abilities based on the assigned piece: the speed of the Knights, the resilience of the Rooks, or the magical genius of the Bishops.
"It is a necessary symbiosis," she continued, taking a step closer to him. "We take the potential of a human—or any other being—and elevate them to a new existence. In exchange, they fill the void that our own biology prevents us from covering. Without this system, the hierarchy of the Seventy-Two Pillars would have crumbled long ago. Being a devil is no longer just a matter of bloodline; it is about merit and recruitment."
Ichigo listened in silence, absorbing the cold logic behind the survival of an entire species. The idea that an individual’s destiny could be altered by a small piece of magical crystal to save a declining race resonated deeply within his mind. Venelana noted his introspection and smiled with that characteristic blend of warmth and cunning, letting the weight of her words settle before taking the next step in her nightly lesson.
She moved away for a few steps, momentarily vanishing into the gloom of the higher shelves before returning with a small chest of dark wood. Upon opening it, the faint glow of a crystal piece emerged, bathing their faces in a violet hue.
"It isn't just about survival, Ichigo-kun. It is a system of advancement," she continued, her voice taking on a shade of dynastic pride. "The Evil Pieces are the engine of our new aristocracy. A reincarnated devil is not condemned to be a mere servant; if they demonstrate exceptional power, they can climb the rungs of the elite. Those who reach the High-Class rank earn the right to possess their own set of pieces, forming their own forces and lineages. This is how we inject new blood and vigor into our society, ensuring that prestige depends not only on a surname, but on raw strength and wit."
Ichigo observed the shimmer of the piece, understanding the magnitude of the board on which he now stood. Ambition was the fuel of this system.
"My son, Sirzechs, is the ultimate example of how this balance sustains the Underworld," Venelana added, closing the chest with a sharp click. "As the current Lucifer, his peerage is the stuff of legends. He has surrounded himself with individuals who defy all logic. Currently, his 'Queen' is Grayfia Lucifuge, a woman whose strength matches that of the Devil Kings. He has Enku as his 'Knight,' Beowulf as his 'Rook,' and even Surtr Second as a 'Bishop.'"
She drew near to Ichigo again, letting her proximity emphasize the weight of her words.
"Each of them began as a piece on his board, and today they are pillars that maintain the peace in our world. Sirzechs doesn't just lead devils; he leads an elite force that has transcended its origins thanks to this system. Promotion is not a dream; it is a tangible reality for whoever has the will to claim it."
Ichigo nodded slowly, processing how the structure of chess translated into a ladder toward absolute power. The night in the library was beginning to reveal that, in the Underworld, even one's soul had an assigned place in the strategy of the great lords.
Time seemed to stretch between the leather-bound walls and the wisdom of the library. The silence was no longer tense; it had transformed into a shared calm, interrupted only by the turning of pages. Ichigo, sitting in a wingback chair of dark velvet, looked strangely at peace, immersed in a volume on the geography of the Underworld. A few meters away, Venelana rested on a divan, concentrated on a book with black covers and gilded edges, an expression of absolute serenity masking a mischievous glint in her eyes.
Intrigued by the matriarch’s concentration and the almost magnetic aura emanating from that particular copy, Ichigo closed his own book halfway, keeping his finger as a placeholder.
"What is it you're reading with such interest?" Ichigo asked, breaking the stillness with his deep voice.
Venelana let out a small, crystalline laugh and closed the book, revealing an illustration of a devil in imposing armor with an icy gaze on the back cover.
"Oh, it’s a chronicle about an ancient and powerful devil from the era of the Maou," she replied, her eyes sparkling. "It is said his power was so vast he could subdue entire cities with a single thought, but his true legend lies in his... 'insatiable' personal nature. He was a warrior who conquered not only battlefields but the coldest hearts of the nobility. It is a tale of passion, conquest, and absolute power."
Ichigo, moved by a genuine curiosity regarding the heroes of the demonic past, tilted his head.
"Can I see?" he asked simply.
Venelana, wearing a smile Ichigo couldn't immediately decipher, handed him the book. He took it and began to read the passage where she had left off. At first, the narrative described an advanced combat technique, but in less than three paragraphs, the description of the "battle" took a graphic, detailed, and highly explicit turn regarding the devil’s private activities and his "conquests."
Ichigo’s right eye gave an involuntary twitch. His fingers tensed against the paper and, with mechanical speed, he snapped the book shut and handed it back to Venelana without a word, though his ears had taken on a distinct reddish hue.
"How can you read that with me sitting right here?" Ichigo blurted out, trying to recover his usual composure.
"Huhu... it doesn't bother me at all that you're here, Ichigo-kun," she laughed, taking the book back with feline grace. "On the contrary, good literature is best enjoyed in company."
Ichigo let out a resigned sigh and returned to his own reading, attempting to ignore the woman's presence. However, the tranquility became precarious. As he tried to concentrate on the maps, Venelana began to let out soft, almost imperceptible sounds—small sighs of satisfaction while her hands slid distractedly, brushing against her thighs over the fine fabric of her dress.
I’ll never get used to this... Ichigo thought, gripping his book tightly as he felt the temperature in the library rise several degrees without the need for a fire in the hearth.
