London, UK — In a rather astonishing turn of events that left the nation agog, the elusive consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes, 40 — famed for his role in bringing down the criminal mastermind James Moriarty — was reportedly seen last evening in what can only be described as an intimate engagement with none other than Irene Adler, widely known as "The Woman."
Adler, 36, formerly a professional dominatrix of international repute and now an opera singer, was observed walking arm-in-arm with Holmes into an upscale, dimly lit restaurant in central London. She was the subject of multiple articles on The Blog of Dr. John H. Watson that made Sherlock Holmes more well-known to the public. One post quotes, "It's funny, in the time I've known him, I've never seen him take the slightest interest in a woman but this one... She's got to him."
Eyewitnesses claim the pair arrived together, an unusual enough sight in itself. Holmes, notoriously known for his cool detachment and almost clinical nature, was described as appearing "uncharacteristically warm" in Adler's presence.
"We assumed she was a client," remarked one diner, who preferred to remain anonymous. "They hardly ate. Mostly, they spoke or looked at each other. At one point, we saw her foot sliding up his leg under the table. What struck us was that Mr. Holmes didn't push her off, as one might expect."
Members of the staff noted further peculiarities. Holmes reportedly declined the menu altogether and instead recited the evening specials aloud — despite them not being publicly displayed. Adler, unfazed, proceeded to order for both of them without so much as a glance at the menu.
"It didn't seem romantic," another patron observed. "They didn't hold hands or smile at each other. But the entire room could feel the tension. Like every word carried weight, even when they spoke in one-word sentences."
After approximately an hour, the two departed separately. However, one attentive observer claims to have seen Adler slip an unidentified object into Holmes's coat pocket before entering a waiting car and vanishing.
The nature of the item remains, for now, unknown.
Neither Holmes nor Adler has issued a statement, and attempts to reach Holmes at Baker Street have thus far been unsuccessful.
Fuel has only been added to the fire by renewed speculation surrounding Holmes's long-rumoured relationship with his flatmate, Doctor John Watson. The pair had long been the subject of public gossip, frequently seen together at all hours and, according to neighbours, "bicker like an old married couple."
When approached for comment, Doctor Watson merely sighed before stating, "I'm staying well out of this."
Theories are already running rampant online —ranging from covert operations and rekindled rivalries to something more personal.
For now, one thing is certain: should this indeed have been a date, it may be the most dangerous and most talked about one London has seen in years.
