Work Text:
He feels sick.
He thought it was a dream.
He had hoped it was a dream.
But it’s Tuesday, not Monday, and he’s staring down at Kanae’s funeral portrait, and her sisters are crying.
It’s Tuesday and he’s not in school but he can’t even feel happy about it.
He had hoped it was a dream.
Maybe it still is.

Tomioka is screwing Murata over at the moment.
He’s late.
Does he even know what he’s done to Murata?
He had been planning on copying Tomioka’s math homework, but considering Tomioka is so much later than usual, he might have to turn to Shinazugawa.
Who’s well... Ugh.
The teacher’s going to kill him. He’s doomed. He hopes he has a nice funeral.
All because of that late bastard!
…
He knows Kochou’s death had affected Tomioka. It’d affected them all, the death, the murder of their dependable class rep.
Tomioka and Shinazugawa were both especially close to her.
There were even some rumors of some love rivalry between them floating around, before what happened.
Shinazugawa enters the classroom, just then, and a silence falls over the room.
His eyes are bloodshot, his uniform isn’t ironed, his hair is unkempt.
He looks messy, but so unlike his usual sort.
He doesn’t look careless like he usually does. He looks like someone too consumed by grief to even bother with his appearance.
…
Murata silently turns back to the worksheet before him.
His conscience can’t take bothering him.
There’s nothing much that he can do for them.
But there’s a murderer on the loose, so he’ll just keep a lookout, try and make sure it doesn’t come for anyone else.

Something’s wrong with Giyu, Sabito decides.
Well, something outside of the expected, that is.
With Kanae’s death, some oddness was to be expected. Sabito’s been acting odd too, and he knows it.
But it’s out of the ordinary for Giyu to show up barely in time for school, and it’s even odder for him to ignore Sabito completely.
From what Sabito can see, staring through the classroom window as he knocks, he’s just sitting in his seat, staring off into space. And when he does take out his phone, the screen is blank. He just stares at the time display.
It’s… unlike him.
Giyu has always been rather quiet, but he’d never been one to lack initiative. If anything, normally it’d be Giyu knocking impatiently, chasing Sabito to hurry up and go to eat with him and Makomo.
But he’s ignoring them completely.
When he does suddenly stand up and leave the classroom, he doesn’t acknowledge them either. Makomo tries to grab him, but he’s out of reach far too quickly.
The timing doesn’t even make sense, he grumbles to Makomo as they walk to the canteen, unwilling to let Giyu’s behaviour stop them from getting lunch.
It’s been a week since Kanae died, and only today has Giyu been acting strange. Before this, his grief was expressed in far more… Expected ways.
He’s ignoring them.
Sabito sighs. Maybe he’s been too overbearing recently, what with the murderer on the loose and everything. Giyu had been pulling away for a while.
He’ll… give him some space.
But not too much.
Gotta keep his guard up against any murderers that might potentially be coming for his brother, after all.

It hurts.
He doesn’t know where he’s going.
It’s stupid, honestly. It’s his dream.
Why is he so scared?
He can’t do anything.
Sabito’s knocking today. Makomo reaches out to grab him.
He walks away.

Tanjiro’s nose has never led him astray before.
Even if it invites comparisons to a dog, it’s the most reliable tool he has.
But his nose is telling him that it’s not Tomioka-senpai he’s looking at.
Next to him, Kanroji-senpai talks away. She sends him a wave when she sees him looking, an act that sends the group of boys following behind her to glower at him.
When did they even become friends?
Wasn’t the Art Club running an exhibition? And with Uzui-senpai away, Kanroji-senpai’s the one organizing all of it.
Tanjiro didn’t think she’d have the time, but considering how strong-willed she can be when she wants to befriend someone…
Her and Tomioka-senpai aren’t so surprising after all.
But it’s not Tomioka-senpai, is it?
Tomioka-senpai would have used Tanjiro as an excuse to get out of the interaction by now. Tomioka-senpai wouldn’t even have spoken to Kanroji-senpai in the first place, too afraid of the crowd of admirers behind her.
Tomioka-senpai wouldn’t smell so… Empty.
There’s no grief. No anger. Sadness.
Tanjiro smells nothing, just the scent of laundry detergent and canteen food.
That’s not Tomioka-senpai, because Zenitsu is cowering behind him, afraid to catch his gaze.
That’s not Tomioka-senpai, because Inosuke remains strangely wary of him, doesn’t go up and chatter like he usually does.
Tanjiro trusts his nose.
He doesn’t trust whatever that is.

Kanroji’s talking to him.
He can almost feel Obanai’s glare, even if the teen is currently out of school.
It’s a moment of inattention.
When she turns to pick up a coin he drops, he pulls on a pair of gloves, takes a penknife out of his pocket.
No. No.
Nononononono-
Please no.
He’ll wake up at her funeral, won’t he?
He’ll wake up and Obanai will be sobbing over the phone, he’ll wake up and Sanemi will be gritting his teeth the same way he did at her funeral.
Kanao will be crying again.
He… He’s moving.
Catches Kanroji by surprise, stabbing her through the throat in a show of strength he didn’t think he was capable of.
She falls.
Green eyes glassy, long hair spread out messily on the floor as he takes a garbage bag out of his bag and wraps her in it. Her body is soon nothing more than a lump of garbage that he picks up carefully.
The incinerator's nearby.
He-
He must be dreaming. Please let him be dreaming.
-•-
Hakuji hums a tune as he walks to the incinerator, trash bags in hand.
He nods to Tomioka as they pass each other. Oddly, instead of nodding back like he usually does, Tomioka stops to a halt.
“Iijima-senpai-”
“Hm?” Hakuji turns around at Tomioka’s call.
His voice is raspy. He looks like a mess as he stares down at his hands.
“Is- Is this a dream?”
Hakuji blinks in surprise. It’s an odd question, but considering everything…
He huffs out a laugh.
“I’d hope so. Maybe we’ll all wake up, back in the holidays, huh?”
Tomioka doesn’t seem particularly reassured, but he still nods and walks away.
Hakuji stands there and watches him go for a while.
He shouldn’t overstep.
But he has a feeling that maybe he should.

“That was… surprisingly fun. I’ll be looking forward to the next update.”
The figure mutters as it leans back in its chair. It pushes away from the desk, spinning around as its hands come to rest behind its head.
“I told you so!” A smaller figure chirps from beside it. “You should learn to trust my recommendations more.”
“Well, the last time you recommended a game to me, I ended up getting scammed!”
“That was on you, you know.”
“No it’s not.”
“Yes it is. How is it my fault you’re so stupid?”
“Shut it.”
“Nope~”
“I SAID-”
