Notes:

Projecting my PTSD on Mr. Jane doe here

Hopefully not too out of character, mostly written while very tired

Work Text:

A thick fog shrouds everything, the only thing to break through; a scream. Soldier knows the voice before the second scream echos. He begins to desperately punch through the fog, running aimless apart from the sound. Stumbling into a clearing that reveals a limp body, disheveled and far too late.

Jane drops to his knees to cradle the fresh corpse, the warmth rushes away. Colder, colder, and colder. The fleeting last moments of homeostasis, even further the consciousness. He turns the head of the body to face him, the Spy on his team. A familiar pop, followed by the ringing that causes his ears to ache.

Staring down, his own blood drips onto the departed. Pearls of gore that trickle as they split create paths on the clammy flesh. The thunderous sound once more, danger. He stands and begins to drag the corpse with him, not wanting to let go.

As he moves, it gets heavier. He maintains his grasp and trudges on, aching. The sounds boom closer, he needs to escape. Even pulling with his entire weight, entire soul, the carcass remains put. He needs to save them both, him and his team. A cacophony of noise is splitting his ears before a final bullet hits between his eyes without his helmet to stop it.

Jane jumps up from his bed, clutching his head. His heart threatened to break out from his ribs as it hammers inside, a painful beating. He's alive, but just to make sure.. He rushes to his bathroom mirror and stares. Jane's eyes are empty, face pleasantly unbloody. However, it doesn't mean everything is ok.

He creeps into the hall, rushing down the corridor as quiet as he can before stopping in front of a room. Gently turning the knob he peers in, the Spy is in bed. Too far to see, he walks further in and gently shuts the door. Jane's coworker is in bed, adorned in silk pajamas. No blood, no wounds, just a chest that rises and falls as it breathes.

Jane is assured for the most part, just then Spy opens his eyes. Seeing the looming Soldier over him, he screams. “Mon dieu!” He shoves the larger man to not much avail. Soldier scratches his head. “My bad.” the Frenchman scoffs and shakes his head, pulling his cover up. “What are you doing in here?”

He doesn't respond at first, just holding a blank expression. Spy squints at the man’s odd behavior, he has many odd behaviors but this isn't amongst any common ones. “Is something.. wrong with you?” Clearly perplexed by Jane, he watches as the man sits on his bed. “I had to make sure you were alive.”

Spy sighs, and pinches his nosebridge. “Whatever you say. Can you leave?” At Jane's unmoving form, he supposes not. Spy slinks back into a comfortable position but flinches at the touch of a hand on his side, glancing back at him. “So you are alive.. how do I know you'll stay alive..” He mutters to himself.

The Frenchman is tired and slightly irritated, he makes a mindless sarcastic remark. “What? Do you need to embrace me or something to know I'm fine?” Soldier takes it literally, he climbs under the blanket and gets hold of Spy.

The hug is a tinge crushing, but he's too exhausted to care any longer. Jane's heartbeat is quick at first but begins to slow against Spy's back. It's kind of nice, comforting as the man is essentially in a shielding position. The man is protective of his team, despite a portion being tough love.

The morning arrives soon after, Spy wakes bright and early as always however the man is still clutching him close. Soldier slowly opens his eyes a few moments later, releasing his grasp on his colleague. Jane stands and stretches. “Don't be late for training, Frenchie!” he exclaims loudly with his typical enthusiasm, a stark contrast from his behavior during the night.

As Soldier just barely gets his hand on the doorknob, Spy calls out to him. “You should really see Medic if you are having issues, know?” The larger man hesitates a moment before replying. “I'm no hippie.” He doesn't look back, simply leaving.

This patriot will be the death of him…
