Hayden knew he wasn't meant to see that.
Hayden knew he didn't want to see that.
But he did.
He watched as their newest rookie gave a little wave to Boston's newest rookie. Said boy then gave his rookie a wink in return.
It felt like sick déjà vu, but this time he could absolutely confirm he'd lived this before.
Now he was older, had reviewed his entire career with playing with Shane, and he was pretty confident he could pick legitimate flirting now.
Not again.
"Hey, rook," Hayden called out, "Everything all good?"
The kid, Liam, turned and gave him a shy smile. "Yeah! It was an awesome game."
"You know Boston's rookie?" Hayden asked bluntly. "He keeps staring at you."
Hayden could feel alarms go off when the kid's ears went a shade of pink. He was not dealing with this, nope, this was not some recurring prophecy of rivalry turned romance. No.
Jackie was going to have a fucking field day with this.
"Um, yeah, we did a training camp together a while back. He's cool."
Cool.
Hayden called bullshit, excusing himself to wander outside of the bar, he fished out his phone.
Shane indirectly created this stupid curse, and he was going to handle it. This was not Hayden's job description, nope, he had his own kids to worry about.
Nope.
Not again.

Shane was determined to have a peaceful evening. He didn't have a game, he didn't have any commitments, events or even catch-up plans with friends.
Ilya was getting Anya settled with her dinner, and the sounds of his Husband talking to their dog brought a small smile to his face.
Shane placed his freshly made cup of tea on the coaster and went to settle on the couch when his phone rang.
Hayden was calling.
Not unusual but surprising, Montreal had just played a game this evening against Boston and had won.
"Hey Hayd, what's up?" Shane asked, reaching forward for his tea.
"I'm not doing this again, Shane Hollander." Hayden yelped out, and Shane nearly dropped his mug. "You need to get your not-so-skinny ass to Boston and tell this kid not to give me grey hair. Ruby is already on that project."
Shane spluttered, placing the mug down, "What? Hayden, what are you going on about?"
Ilya had made his way into the lounge at this point and was watching with a confused expression.
"Our rookie!" Hayden replied, as if that would explain it all, "You know our rookie, yes?"
"Yeah, Liam wasn't it? I remember him from our last game cause he wanted to talk to me." Shane recalled.
"Yeah, yeah, he was star-struck." Hayden grumbled, "Not the point."
"What is the point, Pike? You are interpreting nice evening." Ilya cut in.
"Do you know Boston's rookie?" Hayden asked, ignoring Ilya, "Blonde kid with the little birthmark?"
"Oh, that's Nicky, yeah, nice kid," Shane replied, still highly confused about why Hayden was calling and sounding like his world was collapsing. "Hayden, are you drunk?"
"Fucking should be Hollander, it's happening again!" Hayden all but wailed back, "I caught Liam giving Nicky fucking heart eyes, and Nicky winks at him, Shane. Winks!"
Ilya snorted, "A wink, someone call the police."
"Ilya, shush." Shane said, "What are you on about, Hayden?"
"They're fucking flirting, Shane, and I won't do this again, I refuse."
"Does Montreal know it seems to pick rookies with heart eyes for Boston players?" Ilya asked.
"You're the one with heart eyes, Rozanov." Shane reminded him, "Hayden, I think you're being a little dramatic."
"No!" Hayden responded, drawing out the 'o' sound which reminded Shane of Ruby, "I'm serious, they're one hundred per cent flirting."
"And you are an expert on flirting?" Ilya questioned again, barely dodging the throw pillows Shane tried to smack him with. "You are being ridiculous, Pike, goodnight."
Ilya reached over and disconnected the call.
"Ilya!" Shane complained, seeing his phone light up with an influx of messages from Hayden. "That was rude."
"Pike is rude, interrupting our night off," Ilya replied, lying down so his head was comfortably on his husband's legs. "He talks too much."
Shane sighed and let his fingers drag through Ilya's curls. "Do you think he was right?"
Ilya didn't respond for a bit before letting out a non-committal hum, "Possibly, who knows."
"What if he is? Liam probably doesn't know-"
"Shane." Ilya cut him off, "That team is not your problem now, Liam has your number, yes? He nearly cried when you handed it over."
"Yeah," Shane replied. "But still-"
"But nothing, if he needs help, he will call." Ilya said, closing his eyes again, "If you are concerned, though, send him a message and check in. Mentor stuff."
"Mentor stuff, I can do that." Shane said softly, thinking it over, "Yeah, okay."
"Good, now drink your old man tea so we can go to bed."
"Ilya!"
