Fireflies are Active During the Summer

Summary:

Atsushi never thought he'd have to singlehandedly save the city he called home or stop the destruction of Standard Island. He also didn't expect to have to try it over and over again, having to deal with the fallout and emotions every single time he failed. But maybe, just maybe, there was a silver lining and a hope in the ever growing darkness surrounding him.

55 Minutes events in the "Fireflies and Family" universe

Chapter 1: Before The Battle

Notes:

I AM SO SORRY FOR BEING GONE SO LONG! 🙏PLEASE FORGIVE ME.
I got distracted by my Hunting Dog Atsushi fic. Then I lost all motivation for like 3 months. The polar vortex that hit the United States made it difficult to write. Then the ao3 authors curse hit me in February and I was in a car crash that totaled my car while the person that hit us only got away with a flat tire and a dinged passenger side door. And then in March I couldn't make myself write much at all. But I've been working on this all April. So Yay!!!
Happy Birthday Atsushi!

Some notes.
While this is the events of the 55 Minutes light novel. I *tried* to make it so you wouldn't have to know it to enjoy this
But also. I took some creative liberties. With HG Wells ability specifically. In canon. She can only send someone back once. Where in this. She can only send someone back *safely* once. The more she uses it, the less stable things are.
I did this because I wanted to really put Atsushi through the wringer. Because this is the major set up for his family realizing that things are not alright with him.
Also as you can see. I'm posting this all in one go! (Well technically in two goes. But both will be posted within a couple hours of each other. I'm having internet issues. Chapters 1 and 2 will be posted first. Then chapters ,3 and 4 when I'm sure my wifi won't crap out.) A treat for waiting almost 11 months for an update to this series!

NONE OF THIS WAS WRITTEN WITH AI. I CANT STAND AI. ID RATHER NEVER WRITE AGAIN THAN EVER USE IT.

Note!!!!!: this is Part 8 of the series. If this is the first time you're encountering this series. PLEASE go read the previous installments, or at the very least "Glowing Lights" before this. Or else a lot of this will make no sense.

But enough about that. Time for the usual stuff.
Thank you to the besties, Present_Mom, atlasfinchishere, and hist0rias_secret. I LOVE YOU THREE/P
You can thank Present_Mom for the chapter titles. And Historia for help with the summary!

As always, love to my beautiful fiancé! When I post this, our 3rd anniversary will be 3 days away. I love you so much, Pretty Kitty 💜💙💚✨🦆✨💚💙💜

Anyway. I hope y'all enjoy, 'Fireflies are Active During the Summer'!!!!!!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Atsushi greatly enjoyed this lovely weather. For late July, it was surprisingly mild. And with clear skies and a pleasant breeze off the sea. It felt like a perfect summer day. Atsushi thought to himself, facing the sun with his eyes closed. He was still just a cat at heart after all. Sunbeams were a weakness.

"Chibikko, why are you standing on the bow like that?" Kunikida interrupted. "Please tell me you're not trying to recreate a scene from Titanic. If you fall in. One of us will have to rescue you."

He turned around to face his friend. "No? I'm just enjoying the lovely weather. And I can swim, you know. I could catch up." He was an excellent swimmer.

Kunikida looked to the sky, deep in thought. "Yes, it is a nice day. As projected. I'm glad. I'd rather not break into the meteorological bureau for getting the weather report wrong again. It was a pain in the ass last time."

When on earth had that happened?! Atsushi had been friends with Kunikida for eight years now and he hadn't heard anything about this. Though, he supposed it wasn't out of the ordinary for the blond. He did tend to do very illegal things for bizarre reasons.

"Anyway" The blond broke Atsushi out of his thoughts. "I was looking for you for a reason. We're having a meeting regarding this job."

Following Kunikida inside the cabin. Atsushi noted that no one else seemed prepared for a meeting. In the room were three white couches surrounding a long table.

On one couch, towards the back of the room, Jun'ichiro and Naomi were huddled together. Jun's face was rather green and in his arms was a small metal trashcan. "I hate being at sea!" The redhead whined after throwing up again, while his sister pat his back comfortingly.

"There there, Nii-sama. I have some soft ginger candy if you need any." Naomi spoke softly. Visibly worried about Jun'ichiro.

To the right of them, Akiko was examining photos of dead bodies. Muttering to herself about organs. And shotgun wounds. A not unusual habit of hers. Atsushi loved his older sister dearly and was glad she had hobbies she enjoyed. But he couldn't help but question why dead bodies thrilled her so much. For a doctor, she was a strange one.

On the same couch as Akiko, Kenji was fast asleep. And based on his own mutterings. The younger blond was dreaming about cows. Definitely not the group of people ready for a meeting. And there was someone missing.

"Where's Osamu?" Atsushi asked Kunikida. Looking around the room for his brother. He was the only one not accounted for that was supposed to be here. Atsushi had assumed that the brunet was just elsewhere on the boat.

Kyouka and Ranpo had decided to stay back in case something came up. But Atsushi suspected that Ranpo wanted to spend time with Kyouka. when was the last time he'd had any one on one time with his oldest two siblings?

Kunikida's glasses rode up his face as he pinched the bridge of his nose. "Dazai, as soon as I tried to get him to board the ship. Decided to jump into the water and went for a swim. Saying he'd meet us there."

Akiko perked up at hearing that. A mildly shocked expression taking over her face. "Osamu knows how to swim?"

"Chuuya recently forced the issue, Akiko-nee." The weretiger responded, massaging his temples. "Though why couldn't he have done that years ago. I don't know." They needed to get back to the topic at hand. Atsushi cleared his throat. "So, what exactly are we doing here?"

Kunikida looked relieved to be back to the topic at hand. "I'll gladly explain, but could someone please wake Kenji up? Gently? I'd rather not have to fish someone out of the water."

Rolling his eyes fondly, Atsushi gently nudged Kenji's shoulder. "C'mon, Kenji. Naptime's over."

The younger blond groaned slightly before muttering. "Wow....I didn't know you could speak Japanese, Moo-Moo. We'll...take the world by storm." Kenji rolled over so his face was pressed into the back of the couch. Still asleep.

It looked like Atsushi wasn't alone in wanting to laugh. Naomi had pursed her lips to muffle her laughs, and Jun was wheezing laughing into the trash can he'd been sick in.

Atsushi wished Kyouka was here to help. She was the only person, other than Kenji's mom apparently, who could safely wake Kenji up without getting something thrown at them. Or get thrown themselves.

When Kenji had returned from visiting his home village a few days ago. He'd been so worn out that he fell asleep at his desk. Kyouka had used Demon Snow to carry him over to the couch.

Oh, how Atsushi wasn't prepared at all for his other three siblings to realize that Kenji and Kyouka were crushing on each other, hard. And, if he was being honest. Atsushi hoped that they'd have the good sense to not interfere with their little sister's love life.

Four years and the crush fizzling out, and Atsushi was still a little tetchy about the Wonder Duo messing with his (not quite) relationship with Michizō.

But that's besides the point. Atsushi tried again to wake Kenji. "Kenji, if you wake up now. I'll get you all the Mitsuya cider you could drink. And I'll help you with your current project." Said project being the knife holster Kenji was making by hand for Kyouka.

Like a light switch being flipped. Kenji sat up. "I'm awake! What's up?"

Kunikida looked relieved. "Good. Now our debriefing about what it is we're doing here can begin." He pointed to a bulletin board with a map on it. "Standard Island is the result of the peace pact by Britain, Germany, and France. Each third of it is owned by one of the three countries." Kunikida explained. As if he hadn't just ruined Atsushi's life with that explanation.

Atsushi groaned and put his head in his hands. Of course it was Britain.

He felt Akiko kick his ankle lightly. "What's wrong?"

"I made a promise to Ojiichan when I was 12. To never set foot on British soil. I swore on my life."

Akiko made an expression of fake shock. "Oh damn. A Jii-chan promise. That's a big one. You know what the punishment for that is."

With a halfhearted glare. He answered. "Air jail in tiger form for a million years. Except!" He waggled a finger at her. "Only Kenji can lift me in my tiger form and he's too sweet to put me in air jail!"

"Well, Tiger-senpai. If you broke a promise. I think it's only the right thing to do for me to put you in air jail." Kenji said, so innocently. "Kyouka explained the meme to me! One hour of air jail for Tiger-senpai!"

Well damn. At least Naomi had never betrayed him.

Kunikida cleared his throat, concealing his amusment. "If we could get back to the debrief, please."

Now that everyone had settled down again, Kunikida continued. "The island is used primarily by the extremely wealthy as a kind of resort. Security is tighter than most government buildings."

"So. What and why exactly were all of us called to the island for?" Akiko asked, leaning back on the couch.

She had a valid point. Of the nine detectives– including Naomi who was only part time until she graduated– seven of them had been sent on this job. Even if Osamu wasn't here at the moment. Usually only a pair would be sent out. At most three people. And even then, that was pushing it.

Kunikida sighed and looked over his notes. "We don't know. I was told that we'd be debriefed upon arrival. But, if I had to guess? Thieves. And bad enough that the president clearly agreed that all of us were needed."

Looking up from the trashcan, Jun frowned. "What kind of thieves? Jewels? Money? Priceless works of art that the rich spend more money on than most people will see in at least ten years?"

"If I knew, I'd tell you." Kunikida grumbled, more to himself than to Jun'ichiro. "This 'island' is already a joke. It's not even a real island. It's a giant cruise ship for all intents and purposes."

If there was one thing both Kunikida and Jun'ichiro had in common. It was a dislike of the disgustingly wealthy. The kind that hoard their wealth and don't give to those in need.

"Anyway. We'll get more information when we dock." Kunikida rubbed his temples, the job had barely started and this was clearly a headache already.

Next to Kenji, Akiko ran a hand over her face. "Why did Ranpo have to insist on staying behind? He could probably solve this in five minutes max. Instead of the few days we'll probably be here."

"He wanted to make sure someone remained at the office, Akiko-nee." Atsushi stated. "But I think he just wanted to spend time with Kyouka-chan. I think I heard him say that he wanted to take her shopping."

His sister sat back with a bit more force than necessary. "Of course he did. But why him? We have more fashion sense than him."

"Because he's got his disgustingly wealthy boyfriend who can never say no to him."

With the brief debrief over with, Naomi stood up and pulled Jun to his feet before pulling the redhead out onto the deck for some fresh air. While Kenji fell back asleep. Instantly muttering about cows again.

"Hey, Tiger. Take a look at this femur." Akiko held out a photo to Atsushi.

As he looked it over. He raised an eyebrow at his sister. "It's just a femur. It's been broken in the past. But nothing recent."

"Exactly. This is the only femur reference I have on hand. I need an unblemished one." She smiled a bit sadistically, and sweetly. "Say. Would you give me one of yours? If you ever have one lying around after a fight."

Atsushi handed back the photo, sighing in exasperation. "You have one of my legs at your desk! Why do you need another one?"

Akiko crossed her arms. "Doctor reasons. And besides. The one in the office is just from the knee down. I want a femur."

"I don't wanna lose another leg, Akiko-nee! It hurts!" Atsushi turned to Kunikida. "Doppo! My sister is trying to dismember me!"

Kunikida looked like he was regretting all the choices he'd made in his life that led to this moment. "Can we not dismember Chibikko? Pretty sure it's a very painful process."

"I wasn't going to just cut off my little brother's leg." Akiko pouted. "At most I was going to suggest putting you under and surgically removing it. You wouldn't even know it's gone."

Thankfully for Atsushi's leg, and Kunikida's blood pressure, the boat started to slow down as it reached the docks.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Getting through security was, to be frank, a pain in the ass. Retinal scans, fingerprints. Atsushi was surprised they didn't try to get blood samples.
Once he'd gotten through the gate, he grabbed his bag and joined Kunikida while waiting for the others. "Let me guess. We have to do that all over again when we leave?"
Kunikida adjusted his glasses. "Most likely. Here." He pulled out a silver coin and pressed it into Atsushi's hand. "These are essentially our ID for the duration of our time here. They'll grant us clearance wherever we need to go. All except control rooms."
It was just an unassuming silver coin. "That's…interesting, I guess." Atsushi flipped it between his fingers almost absentmindedly. On the front was the visage of some king. The back, a sea god holding a trident. "You'd think they'd make better identification. A coin could be easily lost."
"Well don't lose it. If any security guards find you without your coin. You'll be treated like a criminal and kicked off the island." The blond's tone was frustrated. And Atsushi couldn't blame him. This seemed very convoluted. But then again. This was an island that catered to the disgustingly wealthy.
As the others joined them. Kunikida took great care to make all of them understand that they could not spend these coins or lose them. But the spiel was interrupted by the sounds of wheels on the cobblestone street.
A young man in plain blue work clothes driving a covered horse drawn wagon came to a stop in front of them before sighing. "Armed Detective Agency I presume?" He looked so exhausted that Atsushi felt tired just looking at him.
Kunikida stepped forward. "Yes. And you are?"
The man sighed. "I'm the captain of Standard Island. You can call me Captain Walston…sigh…I'm the client that…yawn…requested your presence. It's…an honor to make your acquaintances." Walston couldn't be more than 30, if that. But the way he sighed and yawned made him seem so much older.
"The pleasure is all ours. Thank you for meeting us here." Kunikida responded before tilting his head. "Are you alright? You seem exhausted."
Walston shook his head and yawned again. "Worry not…yawn. This is how I normally am. I'm…yawn… here to bring you to your hotel. We'll debrief on the way." He gestured for them all to climb in the wagon.
Atsushi fought back a yawn in sympathy. Walston's exhaustion had clearly rubbed off on him. 'He looks more like an engine repair man than a captain. But I guess looks can be deceiving.' He thought to himself as he climbed in after helping Akiko and Naomi in.
Kenji settled in the space next to Atsushi. He looked as cheerful as could be. "This really reminds me of home! Except we don't have cobblestone streets back home."
"How's everything back home?" Jun'ichiro asked. No longer seasick now that they weren't noticably moving on the water.
"Really good! Mom thinks it'll be a good harvest. And the cows due to start calving in the Fall are all progressing well!"
Kunikida, who had decided to sit up front with Walston, cleared his throat. "May we have the details of the job now? All we have garnered is that you're worried about thieves."
Just as Walston opened his mouth to answer. A chiming noise, reminiscent of the flute melodies noodle carts used to get people's attention started sounding from his pocket. "Sigh…Let me get that." He pulled out a phone from the breast pocket of his shirt. "Hello?" Almost instantly, Walston perked up. "Yes! My deepest apologies! I'll find it straight away. No, no one will be inconvenienced. Mhm. As soon as possible. Goodbye."
"Is everything alright?" Kunikida asked.
Walston shook his head. "Let's. Let's just get moving. I'll start the debrief." He lightly snapped the reins to get the horses moving. "You were correct in assuming it's thieves. And as this is a resort for the wealthy. What these thieves are after is no trivial matter."
Kunikida adjusted his glasses. Clearly he wasn't enthused about this case anymore than he had been a few minutes ago. "And what are they after? Jewels? Artwork?"
"Food."
All the agency members present froze up. Naomi made a face. "Excuse me, sir. But did you just say food?"
Jun rolled his eyes and gave the air an exasperated flabbergasted look. "Food. Of course it's food. We got called here for food."
Even Akiko, who had a taste for the finer things in life, looked confused. "What kind of food would call for all of us?"
Another sigh left Walston's lips. "The most expensive food in the world. The European White Truffle. Sometimes referred to as Jewels. They're worth four times their weight in gold, and are rumored to go for one million euros on the black market. We're currently safeguarding them here due to our advanced security measures."
"I see. Unlike jewels and artwork. If one of these truffles were to be taken. The evidence could be eaten." Kunikida said, mostly to himself. "I'm guessing we're here to guard them from the theives?"
Walston nodded. "Precisely. We've been informed by our branch of Scotland Yard that three thieves are after the truffles. Which is why I contacted the president of your Agency."
Atsushi was burning with a question. "Excuse me. But. Why exactly were all of us asked to come? Of our detectives, only two of us remained back at the office. Usually we're only sent out in pairs."
"I was wondering the same thing, Kiddo." Akiko lightly nudged his foot with her own.
"He's got a point, Captain Walston." Kunikida raised an eyebrow. "Why were so many of us requested? Is there something you're not telling us?"
Walston started to flounder. "N-not at all! I just wanted to ensure that the best group possible would keep the truffles safe!"
Atsushi and Kunikida shared a skeptical look.
"Anyway!" Walston continued. "We've arrived at the hotel! It's the most popular one on this part of the island. Usually there's a four month waiting list. But I was able to pull some strings and got three of the best rooms!" They came to a stop in front of a four story building that looked more like an inn right out of a fantasy story than a real hotel.
Walston jumped off the front and gestured for the detectives to follow. "Please, come inside! Relax! You'll be shown where we need you later. There is nothing to worry about!"
Of course, Atsushi knew that when someone said that. It meant that there was a lot to worry about. But he'd bring it up with the others later
~~~~~~~~~~~

The room assignments were decided quickly. Jun'ichiro and Kenji would share one, Akiko and Naomi the next room, and Atsushi would share with Kunikida. It was all simple. And they'd be here only a couple days at most. The style of the hotel reminded Atsushi of the stories his grandcat told him about the unfortunate time he spent in London.

Atsushi put his now unpacked bag down next to his bed and flopped over. His head dangling off the side of the bed. Watching his friend fret while unpacking. "Hey, Doppo. Did you notice anything weird about that Walston guy?"

Before being shown to their rooms, they'd been told more details on the job at hand. Where exactly the truffles were located. The security measures in place. As well as the blind spots in the guard schedule which were the times the thieves were more likely to strike.

All the while, Walston seemed stressed. Patting his pockets like he'd lost something.

"I noticed a lot of things wrong with him. He's lying to us. Or at the very least not telling us everything." Kunikida grumbled. "But I suppose work is work. We both know that not all of our clients are going to be saints. I'm just curious as to why Shachou agreed to this job. And why he didn't insist on Ranpo-san joining us."

That was a good point. Ranpo, while more than a little bit of a brat. If their dad insisted on something. Ranpo would do it. Even if he needed to complain the entire time. "I don't know. It is odd though. He left home earlier than normal a few days ago to speak with the people that hired us. And when Kyouka and I got to work. He seemed a bit frustrated. Which is saying something because you know my dad. He's usually unflappable. Except when it comes to dealing with the Port Mafia. But I think that's just Mori."

Kunikida sat down on his own bed. "Do you think he was pressured into this job?"

Atsushi thought for a moment. "No. I don't think so. I mean, a job like this. It's bound to pay really well. Maybe he's intending for there to be a bit more of a safety net in case we have a catastrophe worse than the Guild. Could be a similar reason you and Jun aren't happy about this. He's had to deal with rich people with little to no morals. Both during his assassin days and when he was a bodyguard." Atsushi remembered accompanying his dad on some of those bodyguard jobs when he was little. Meeting all sorts. Good and bad. "Or maybe he's just anxious about so many of us being away from the city. Even if he agreed to send all of us."

His friend sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "I suppose you may be right. You know him better than the rest of us."

Atsushi sat up and let the blood flow out of his head before he started speaking. "We were told to relax. So I have a question for you, Doppo."

"What is it?"

A mischievous smile crept up Atsushi's face. "How are you and Katai? Cause any power outages lately?"

A pillow soared through the air and hit Atsushi square in the face. "We're great. And why do you suspect we caused a power outage?"

"I'm not stupid, Doppo." Atsushi laughed. "I'm also not blind to the fact both of you were making googly eyes at Higuchi."

The blond sighed dramatically. "Sometimes I question why you are the way you are. And then I remember. You're Ranpo-san and Yosano-sensei's little brother. As well as Dazai's. And you're my mentee. So I mostly have myself and your older siblings to blame. I can only hope Kyouka doesn't start to act like Dazai."

"I would fear for Kenji in that case." Atsushi tossed the pillow back at Kunikida. "But I don't think we have anything to worry about. Kyouka's got a good head on her shoulders. Hopefully she and Ranpo enjoy the peace and quiet while we're all here." He stood up and stretched. Relishing the feeling of his shoulders popping. "I'm going to go explore. I'll call if I find out anything."

It wasn't until he was halfway out the door that Kunikida seemed to realize what Atsushi had said. "What do you mean you fear for Kenji?! Chibikko!?"

"Sorry! Can't hear you!"

~~~~~~~~
It really was a nice day. Atsushi noted as he looked around. Even if he was in a place that looked like a replica of Victorian era London. It felt like he was in a foreign country. Which, he supposed he was. Since Standard Island was outside of Japan's jurisdiction. Hopefully his Grandcat wouldn't be too disappointed he'd set foot on British soil.
His musings were interrupted by the sound of a whistle blowing and someone shouting "After him! He's getting away!"
Atsushi paused and looked around. Had the thieves shown themselves already?
"Did you see which direction he went?" "What did he steal?!" "Call Security!" Several different voices shouted from a street or two over.
This was really strange. But, if the thieves had shown themselves. Atsushi had to help. He ran in the direction of the voices. Which appeared to be the storage terminal of the Port. Which was the only other entrance to the island besides the way Atsushi and the others had arrived.
Buildings made of red brick, similar to the warehouse district back in Yokohama, surrounded the area. Likely all full of cargo.
A man in a blue uniform ran up to Atsushi, out of breath and red in the face. "Young man! Have you seen a tall man with dark brown hair run by here?"
"Uh. No. I haven't seen anyone like that." He answered. "Do you need any help?"
"No! But if you see a man like that. Tell someone! Someone snuck onto the island! We think he stole something." The man ran off in the direction Atsushi just came from.
Just as the commotion had calmed down. A mischievous and teasing voice echoed from a few yards away. "Psst! Atsushi-kun~"
Atsushi looked around, where was that very familiar voice coming from?
"Tee-hee-hee. What are you doing over here, Atsushi?" The voice called again. Seemingly from a lidded trash can on the street corner.
Cautiously, Atsushi approached the trash can. He grabbed the handle of the lid and in one quick motion. He removed it.
"Boo!"
Slam! Atsushi slammed the lid back on. Hitting his brother on the head.
"Owww. What was that for, Atsushi?" Osamu groaned as he lifted the lid, still on his head. "Everyone is so mean to me!"
Atsushi took the lid from Osamu and made sure he hadn't done serious damage. "I should ask you the same thing. What the hell are you doing in the trash can?" He paused. "Wait a minute. Are you the person those guards were looking for? Did you swim here?!"
Osamu smiled, both eyes sparkling. Which made Atsushi notice his brother was wearing his colored contact. "You are correct! On both accounts!"
"Why, dare I ask?" Atsushi caught a whiff of his brother and nearly gagged. "I have half a mind to send you to the hotel to get a shower. You reek of dead fish!"
The brunet put a hand to his chest in mock offense. "Rude! Very rude tiger! But to answer your question. The Division gave me a secret mission!"
Atsushi blinked. "So you're not also after the thieves?"
"The thieves are the least of our worries." Osamu's smile vanished. "They're small fries compared to the catastrophe that is to come."
"Catastrophe?" Atsushi's mouth went a little numb. If Osamu said there was real danger. Atsushi knew he was serious and not joking.
"If you see a man in a suit with a black briefcase, and a camera around his neck. Call me immediately." Osamu stared like he was looking into Atsushi's soul. "Don't try to intercept him. They call him 'The Foreseer'. He's been present at numerous catastrophes throughout the past. One wrong move and both this island and Yokohama could go up in flames."
A wave of anxious mild dizziness made Atsushi's breathing grow shaky. "What do you mean?"
"Just leave it to me. You and the others just focus on the thieves. And remember. If you see the man in a suit with a black briefcase and a camera. Call me." Osamu took back the lid of the trash can and placed it back over himself as he crouched down into the can. "Before I forget! There are Port Mafia members crawling around here."
"Of course there are."
Osamu's eyes glimmered in the small space between the lid and the trash can. "Don't worry! They rarely attack in crowded places. And even if they did. No one can run as fast as you, Kiddo."
That did little to fill Atsushi with confidence.
"I'm counting on you and the others!" Osamu said brightly. Securing the lid back in place.
Atsushi watched as the trash can wobbled and fell on its side before Osamu rolled down the street. "See you later, Atsushi!" He said with a cheery tone. Just rolling down the street.
As Atsushi turned and walked away, he muttered quietly to himself. "Probably should've kicked him. But he'd definitely tattle on me."
~~~~~~~~~~~[Akutagawa POV]~~~~~~~~~~

On a different vessel, 16 minutes earlier. Two Port Mafia members stood on the deck of a different ship. Their presence on the island would be under false pretenses. Their identification was falsified. They'd threatened the security personnel on this ship so they wouldn't need to pass through the security check on the island itself.

It was a very good thing that the Port Mafia's reach extended so far.

Ryūnosuke hated being at sea. Truly hated it. It didn't even have anything to do with what happened last time. What with the weretiger putting him into a coma and breaking his jaw.

No, it had much more to do with Ryūnosuke's...delicate constitution as Gin put it. The salty mist in the air did nothing for the persistent dull ache of his lungs that grew sharp every so often. And the swaying of the water made him nauseous. He was grateful that Gin had shoved black face mask into his hands before he'd left that morning. It wouldn't do well for him to get sick, being around all these strange people. And it served the purpose of hiding his face. It was rather unfortunate. Being a known member of Yokohama's Port Mafia meant he was easily recognizable.

"Akutagawa-senpai, Sir. I have some ginger chews if that would help with your nausea." Higuchi offered helpfully at his side. A handful of individually wrapped honey flavored ginger chews in her palm.

Wordlessly but not without a nod of acknowledgement and gratitude, Ryūnosuke took one of them. Gin had made him swear to be nicer to Higuchi. Threatening him with spilling the beans about his, unfortunate, recent infatuation with the weretiger to said weretiger. A fate worse than death if one were to ask him.

At least out on the water, heading towards Standard Island and chasing after a group of thieves that had crossed the Port Mafia, it was unlikely he would run into the weretiger. It would be a nightmare to face the younger man now.

Though. The last time they'd spoken. The weretiger Atsushi had been mourning someone. But Ryūnosuke didn't know who that strange man was to the weretiger. An uncle perhaps?

Seeing him look so miserable made Ryūnosuke's chest hurt in a different way than it usually did. And all he'd wanted to do was comfort Jinko. But that wouldn't have ended well. So Ryūnosuke did the only thing he could think of. He sent Tachihara and Gin to the weretiger.

Now, Ryūnosuke must do his least favorite thing in the world. Small talk. But, Gin had been so kind as to give him a gold mine of a topic. "Gin informed me of your social introduction to, what was? Kunikida? As well as his partner?"

His words had the exact effect his sister had warned him about. Higuchi's face turned bright red. "Tayama, sir. The other one's name is Tayama."

"Fascinating." Ryūnosuke kept his tone even. Even if he was highly amused. "I do believe I was electrocuted by Kunikida once. Around two years ago."

"I recall. I handle the paperwork for our squadron's medical needs." She said, her voice a little strained. "Gin and Tachihara get minor injuries so often that I think they do it to spite me."

That certainly sounded like something those two would do. But ignoring that, Ryūnosuke nodded in acknowledgement. "And you find this man and his partner...desirable? Even after everything the agency has done to us this year alone?"

He was leveled with a deadpan look that he'd never gotten from Higuchi before. "Sir, I don't think you have any room to talk about whether or not someone from the agency is desirable. Not when you've been itching to get into the weretiger's hakama for months now."

That triggered a painful coughing fit in Ryūnosuke out of pure shock. Once it had settled, and without blood, he glared at his second in command. "How the hell did you come to that conclusion?"

"You adopted a cat because he gave it to you." Higuchi rolled her eyes. She was sassing him! "And both Gin and Tachihara have dragged me into their talks on what you'll do about it."

"I'm not confirming or denying anything. It's none of your business."

"Well, you could certainly do far worse. I've spoken with him, and he's a polite young man. It seems he just has a bitch switch from hell. And you trigger it more often than not. So you must be pretty special in his mind." Higuchi dared to wink at him about it. This was unacceptable!

But. Ryūnosuke would never admit that it pleased him that the flea ridden fool felt intensely about him. "I have half a mind to send you to be Kajii's assistant for a month straight."

Higuchi just smiled a shit-eating grin. "So. Sir. Your type is pretty-boys that can kick your ass."

"For the love of God. Shut up." Ryūnosuke groaned into his hands.

She pat his shoulder as if they were friends. Oh god, they are friends. "There there, Sir. There are worse types to have. Your sister is dating Tachihara after all."

Ryūnosuke lifted his head and glared at her without any heat behind it. "And Jinko was also somewhat romantically involved with that redheaded fool when they were younger." Not that Ryūnosuke had any illusions of the weretiger desiring him in return.

"Then his tastes can only improve." Higuchi said, way too cheerfully. "Don't despair."

He didn't dare say anything more. Ryūnosuke would rather start dressing in decora fashion than incriminate himself further. So, he simply watched the water.

The sea was relatively calm. One could call it a perfect summer day. Even with that strange tan thing swimming a few meters away.

Ryūnosuke blinked a few times. Was that...Dazai in the water? No, surely not. Dazai couldn't swim. A fact that Chuuya had informed Ryūnosuke of years ago. The former executive couldn't swim. Which was why it was a common occurrence back then for Chuuya to fish Dazai out of the water.

No, Dazai was not in the water. The sea was playing tricks on his mind.

Higuchi pat Ryūnosuke on the shoulder again. "It'll be alright, Sir. There are worse things than being attracted to someone objectively good looking. At least you know he's attracted to men."

"Not helping." He grit out between his teeth. It was bad enough when Gin and Tachihara knew. But of course Gin had to spill the beans to Higuchi.

Ryūnosuke could only hope Hirotsu didn't know yet. Or, god forbid, Kouyou. If Kouyou knew. Then his life was forfeit. She'd insist on teaching him how to properly seduce the weretiger. And Ryūnosuke had almost died from embarrassment seeing her try to teach Gin how to use her "feminine charm". Thank god Verlaine had put a stop to that and insisted on taking Gin under his wing.

And if Hirotsu knew. He'd get all fatherly and try to give Ryūnosuke advice on wooing Jinko. And Ryūnosuke would probably keel over and die right there.

Of course, Ryūnosuke would rather die than go to Chuuya for advice. Chuuya was back together with Dazai. Anyone who is attracted to Dazai goes down on the respectability scale in Ryūnosuke's mind. He was still plagued with the mental image of walking in on them when he was 15. Ryūnosuke wished that he'd gone blind rather than see that.

"So you're not going to do anything about your crush on the weretiger?" His second in command sounded as perplexed as she looked. "Is it because he's part of the agency? Because Chuuya-san is definitely back together with Dazai. So I don't think you'd have a problem with dating the weretiger."

This was giving him a headache. "It's because I hate him and he hates me."

Higuchi gave him an unimpressed look. As if he'd said something stupid. Yet she didn't say a thing. Which was almost worse than if she had said something.

"Besides. I swore to kill him. Can't exactly kill my partner now, can I?" Though, Chuuya did threaten to kill Dazai every day. So Ryūnosuke supposed that argument was invalid. But he does want to kill the weretiger. Then he'd be rid of this stupid infatuation.

But would that make him happy? Ryūnosuke didn't exactly enjoy meeting new people. In fact he quite detested it. But for some reason the weretiger sparked a fire in his chest. And it made him want to know more about the swordsman.

"Whatever you say, sir." Higuchi gave him a shit eating grin. "But I will tell you. There is a ballroom dancing competition on the island this evening. The weretiger is apparently a really good dancer. If you ever wish to take him dancing-"

"Shut up, Higuchi. For the love of God." Ryūnosuke could feel his face flushing. Oh lord was this going to be a long day. "Whatever infatuation I do or do not have with Jinko. The chances of him feeling the same are practically zero."

Their own ship docked and Ryūnosuke took no time at all in leaving. He wanted to get this over with. And maybe hunting the thieves that had robbed one of the banks under the Port Mafia's patronage would help him feel better.

Once his mind was clear. Then maybe he'll allow himself to think about the weretiger and how to handle these feelings.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~[Atsushi]~~~~~~~~~~~
The island was sectioned into four main zones. The Residential zone, Test Zone, Tourist zone, and Engine Depot zone. The administrative staff lived within the Residental, as they remained on the island year round. The test zone was used for various experiments, since the island also served as a research facility for power generated sailing. The tourist zone was well, where the tourists resided. With music halls, hotels, resorts, shopping malls, and whatever else the temporary residents desired. The Engine Depot zone, where Atsushi was headed, was full of all the machinery and facilities needed to steer the island and keep it afloat.
The jeweled truffles that the agency were hired to protect were apparently on the fourth floor basement level in a vault. The most secure location on the island so they'd been told.
As Atsushi passed through the streets of the area modeled after modern day Berlin. He wondered to himself. Just how good could those truffles be? He'd tried things with truffles in it before. He honestly found the taste to be very mediocre, not worth the hype. But then again, rich people are weird. They'll pretend something that tastes like dirt is the best thing they'd ever had, all because of a high price tag.
At the end of the street, stood an ostentatious clock tower, the time reading as 11:27. Much different from the one in the London area. If he had more time to sight see. Atsushi might actually have taken an interest in the architectural differences between the German buildings, the English ones, and the French. Maybe before they leave, he could take a better look around.
In front of a shop selling freshly cooked sausages– which was, oddly enough next to an art museum– Atsushi paused. Not because he was hungry. He was, having had an early breakfast. But that wasn't the point. The point was, there were three men crouched in the alleyway next to the shop. Muttering to themselves. He couldn't really make it out thanks to the sounds of the rest of the tourists. But he caught a few words
"I forgot…"
"Oh, you can't be serious."
"What're we going to do!?"
Atsushi quietly observed them from the street for a minute. There was a larger, bald man, a weary looking businessman was in a suit who about Atsushi's dad's age, and the last one was a teenager maybe two or three years younger than Atsushi. The way they were all three crouching in the alley. He wondered if they'd lost something. And it seemed more likely with how distressed they sounded. Maybe they'd lost their map or something.
Well. Atsushi was nothing if not helpful. That's kind of the reason he likes being a detective. There wasn't any harm in stopping for a minute to help these three men. But as he got closer. The type of trouble they were in became apparent.
"Boss, didn't you say this was the easy part?" The man in the suit said, looking so miserable Atsushi couldn't help but feel bad. "You said 'All we gotta do is memorize twelve measly numbers. Should be easy! I still remember the names of every woman I've slept with.'"
The teenager piped up. "Which was too much information, Bossman! We don't wanna know that."
The bald man, who by process of elimination must be the "Boss" stood up and puffed out his chest. He was tall. Taller than Kunikida, which was saying something as Kunikida had been 6'2 since a little after Atsushi had met him eight years ago. The bald man was also so muscular Atsushi wondered if he was dehydrated. "Yeah I said that. What's the problem? I'm the boss of the band of thieves. If I forget the twelve numbers, then it's both of your jobs to pick up the slack and get to work figuring them out."
Band of thieves
Atsushi stopped and ducked behind a dumpster. Recalling what Walston had said not too long ago.
'Scotland Yard has informed us that three thieves are after the truffles.'
Oh it would be just Atsushi's luck that he stumbled upon the thieves on pure chance. He must be a better detective than he thought!
"We have full faith in you, Boss!" The teenager had such a hopeful glee filled expression. It reminded Atsushi of Kenji a little bit.
The Boss laughed joyfully. "That's it, kid! Butter me up. For I am the reincarnation of the great Phantom Thief, Arsène Lupin!"
Ah, so this guy was missing a few screws. Arsène Lupin was the name of a fictional thief. And part of a video game Atsushi played, but that's besides the point. This guy thought he was the reincarnation of a fictional character.
"I too am in awe of your greatness, Boss. But that doesn't change the fact that without the twelve digit code, we can't disable the surveillance cameras!" The middle aged man sounded so dejected.
"What's so worrying about cameras? Just roll up your sleeves and put some elbow grease into it!"
"You can't elbow grease your way into disabling cameras! That's why I'm on the verge of tears!"
"Just use that clicky thing you tech whizz kids use!"
"The mouse?!" The put upon middle aged man yelled. "And I'm almost 43! I'm not a kid!"
"Yeah! That thing. Just use it and disable the cameras. Then we'll be on our way. I don't see why you're complaining."
"Yeah, Virgo. Why are you complaining. The Boss told you what to do! And the Boss knows everything!" The teenager said so earnestly it further reminded Atsushi of Kenji. Just, as a thief instead of a farmer.
The middle aged man– Virgo– cried out. "I know I'm 42, but is it okay for me to cry in public?"
While the three men were bickering. Atsushi pulled his phone out and dialed Kunikida's number. Careful to keep his voice low.
"Atsushi?" Kunikida's voice sounded in his ear through the earpiece of his headset. "What's going on?"
Atsushi cupped his hand over the receiver of said headset and whispered. "I found the thieves. In the Germany area."
"What!?" Kunikida gasped on the other end of the line. "Where exactly in the Germany area?"
"Between a sausage shop and an art museum. Near where it crosses over from tourist to the Engine Depot zone." Atsushi clarified.
He could hear Kunikida writing something down while walking. "What's the situation?"
Atsushi peeked around the dumpster quickly. "Their Boss is a really cocky muscular bald man. There's a teenage boy maybe Naomi's age. And a middle aged man who honestly reminds me of Katai."
"…okay then. Won't even ask what that means. How do you know they're the thieves?"
"They're talking about disabling the security cameras." Atsushi continued whispering.
There was more scribbling. "There's apparently an underground passageway that connects to the other facilities below the surface. Good job. Keep the call going so we can listen."
The Boss of the thieves started to yell loud enough that Kunikida was drowned out. "Argh! Who cares if we're seen on cameras! It'll just add to our notoriety!"
"But, Boss! Wait!" Virgo called out.
The Boss cracked his knuckles as he stood to his full height. "Come on, men. It's time to steal!" He started to lead the other two down the alleyway and behind the buildings.
"Doppo!" Atsushi whisper yelled into his phone. "They're on the move!"
"Don't lose sight of them, Chibikko! I'll call security. Keep an eye on them from afar! I'll be there soon and then we can ambush them!" Kunikida started to run based on the sounds Atsushi heard.
The weretiger kept close to the walls and followed the thieves silently. The alleyway led into the back courtyard of the art museum. He watched the thieves strolling almost lazily through. Not caring about the sprinklers spraying the grass.
They turned down a path, out of Atsushi's line of sight. Presumably toward an entrance into the museum. But when Atsushi turned that exact corner. He was stunned. "Uh. Doppo."
"Yes?"
"I lost sight of them." There was just a blank wall. Not even a single window. Just. Wall
"What do you mean?! They didn't vanish into thin air, did they?" Kunikida asked, flabbergasted as Atsushi felt.
Atsushi sniffed the air. "No. No Abilities like Jun's. They're just. Gone." But that didn't out rule an ability being used at all.
Crouching down, Atsushi looked for footprints in the soft grass. Other than his own boot prints, there were three other sets. Which all ended right at the wall. As in flush with the wall.
"Find anything, Kid?"
"Yep. They're definitely already inside." This was a headache and a half.
His friend made an impressed hum. "Found them already?"
Atsushi stood back up. "Nope. But I think one of them has the ability to walk through walls."
Kunikida groaned loudly. "That's real peachy. A thief that can walk through walls. Let me tell security. We're five minutes out. Find the thieves and keep them distracted until I get there. Got it, Atsushi?"
"Yes, Doppo. I'll do my best." Atsushi put his phone back in his jacket pocket, still connected to the call. The only way in on the ground level was the front enterance. But that would take way too long. And from where Atsushi was standing. The rooftop access point was closer. Four stories up. That's fine. Atsushi literally fell out of an airship last month. He can handle a four story climb.
Taking a deep breath, Atsushi willed his arms and legs to become that of his tiger form. And after a second of mine discomfort as his limbs changed shape and structure. The change was finished. Though he couldn't resist a more tiger-like groan.
Atsushi jumped up and grabbed the wall with his hands which were currently paws with claws engaged. Then he pushed off that wall and grabbed onto the other. Repeating the process until he landed on the roof. Quickly returning his limbs to human.
Immediately he saw his way in. A glass ceiling, showing off the first floor's grand exhibit hall. With banners all along the ceiling.
Once he'd pried one of the panels open, Atsushi held his breath and jumped. Reaching out with his hands, nails lengthened into claws. Claws with punctured one of the banners and slowed his decent as screams of shock and terror filled the air.
Atsushi let go of the banner to tuck himself just enough that he'd land on his shoulder and roll to lessen the impact. And when he stood up, people were staring at him in fear.
"Oops. Sorry about that! Don't mind me!" He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly while running in the direction of where approximately the thieves would be. Grabbing a paper map of the place as he passed a kiosk full of them.
"Atsushi. Scotland Yard confirmed your suspicions. The leader is a name by the name of Nemo. And his ability is that he can walk through walls. But only those with a thickness of two inches or less. Which significantly limits his routes." Kunikida spoke in his ear. "Good work, kid. Find them and keep them distracted. I'm almost there."
He found an emergency staircase leading to the basement levels in no time at all. With a literal leap of faith. Atsushi swung his legs over the guardrail and fell to the second basement level. All that was left to do was find the thieves.
Atsushi hadn't been able to get their scent earlier because of the conflicting smells on the street. But thankfully, his hearing was stellar.
But maybe his luck was turning back in his favor after all. Since the thieves literally appeared right before his eyes as he ran down the basement hallway.
Unfortunately, Atsushi was so surprised in return that he crashed into the wall.
Thankfully the three thieves seemed more surprised. They all blinked in shock at Atsushi. Instead of continuing down the hallway system.
"Wow!" The Boss– Nemo– exclaimed. "This island truly has everything. You see that, Gab? A guy just flew at us!"
"Mhm! This is such a cool island!" The teenager who must be Gab called back in a cheerful manner. "Cool things always happen with you Boss!"
Nemo held a hand out to Atsushi to help him up. "You okay, lad? You a tourist or something?"
After hesitating for only a second, Atsushi took the offered hand. "I'm something, alright. But I'm fine, thanks."
Virgo eyed him with clear suspicion, keeping his distance. "I don't know, Boss. There's something weird about him. Something not quite right. How'd he move that fast? What if he's security?"
Oh no. Atsushi had been found out that fast.
"Oh pish." Nemo waved a hand dismissively. "Don't be stupid. Looks too much like a punk to be a security guard. I mean, look at him? Who'd hire someone so tacky? Probably just runs track or something."
Tacky? Atsushi looked at himself. It wasn't his normal attire. But he thought he looked normal. Maybe it was the red leather jacket. He'd found it at a thrift shop a while ago and hadn't had a chance to wear it until now. He'd been told to dress inconspicuous. So the jacket, with a pair of blue jeans and a plain white shirt was his choice for the day. "Uh…"
The thieves looked at him curiously. Gab speaking up. "You good, man?"
"I was looking for you." Atsushi admitted. "You dropped something earlier and I've been looking for you all day!"
Nemo blinked. "What'd we lose?"
"And how'd you find us?" Virgo crossed his arms.
Atsushi reached into his pocket and pulled out the map he'd grabbed a few minutes ago. "You lost this map! I know it's silly. It's just a map. But my siblings and I are the kind to save maps from museums we go to. Free souvenirs and all that! But." He lowered his hand with the map in it. I realize that you probably could've just grabbed another one if it was that important."
The Boss nodded along. "I'm very similar, kid. Hate losing stuff like that too. And it would be unbecoming of the reincarnation of Arsène Lupin to leave behind evidence of his presence." He grabbed the map from Atsushi. "What's your opinion on phantom thieves?"
"Oh! Umm. I think they're fascinating! Though I'm more a fan of reading about Ishikawa Goemon. But Lupin has his merits!" Atsushi was thankful for his knowledge of thieves in history. Which may or may not had been started thanks to Ranpo insisting on him playing a particular video game. But regardless.
Both Gab and Nemo brightened at his words. The latter clapping Atsushi on the back. "A kid after my own heart. You should join our band of thieves!"
"Oh no! I couldn't! I'm a clutz! You saw, I just ran into the wall!"
Virgo started to rub his temples in exasperation. "Boss. You're only thinking about thieving. This kid is very suspicious. We never had a map of this museum."
"Hey…you're right!" Nemo's mirth evaporated while he pulled Gab and Virgo behind him.
Gab's smile turned into a scowl. "Hey! Punk! How dare you try and distract the Boss!? What's your deal?" He stepped out from behind his boss and pulled out a knife. Brandishing it at Atsushi. "I'll kick your ass! I am the number one diciple of the Greatest Phantom thief of our era! Gab the Whirlwind they call me!"
Of all days for Atsushi to leave his katana at the office. Normal teenagers didn't carry katanas. It would make him stand out too much if he had it. But no one thought 'Hey, what if there's someone who also has a blade? What will Atsushi do then?' No no, no one ever thought that.
Thank God he could block bullets and normal non-ability blades with his ability.
In an instant Atsushi let his muscles expand, turning his arms into tiger legs once again. He braced for the attack, blocking his face and upper torso.
But the blow never came. Instead the knife hit the floor. A look of horror on all three thieves faces. Gab's especially. The teen had fallen on his ass and was scooting back towards the others."Eww! Ew ew ew! What happened to your arms?! Why do they look like that!?"
Nemo had pulled Gab behind him. Even with the teen still on the floor. Still muttering. "Don't come any closer! That's so freaky! Boss, do something!"
Well now this was just getting mean. Atsushi could sense Byakko thinking the same thing. Who was Gab to judge Beast Beneath the Moonlight
Virgo sighed. "See, Boss. This is why I said we shouldn't have brought Gab with us. He may be sharp as a tack. But he's got no backbone." He started looking at Atsushi's arms. "Though I can't blame him. But it still doesn't change the fact that he's only your number one diciple because your other ones quit!"
These thieves were nutcases. Gab was only in that position by default? The more he learned about these three, the less Atsushi thinks they ever successfully stole anything. They were just kind of. Sad really. Like a group of kids who insisted they were a gang, but all they did was ride bikes around their neighborhood.
Nemo raised an eyebrow at Virgo. Visibly unimpressed. "Your turn then, Virgo. Go get him."
"Me!? No! I'm not going anywhere near anything like that! What if it's contagious!?"
Atsushi sneered a little as he rolled his eyes. Some tiger instinct to show his teeth to intimidate his foes. "I'm not contagious."
"Boss!" Virgo whined. "He's got fangs! I can't fight him! I'll die! He's probably some kind of man eating beast! I'm not equipped to handle that! I'm just an engineer!"
Atsushi's jaw dropped in offense. "Rude! I've never eaten anyone! Might've eaten a chicken or two when I was a toddler. But never a human!" This was so goddamn embarrassing. Kunikida was probably laughing at him. He felt Byakko grumbling within his soul and Atsushi agreed. "This is so not how I pictured today going!" The words came out in a half-roar as he screamed to the ceiling.
"But all that matters is that you've successfully done the job you were asked to do." The voice which had been in Atsushi's ear moments ago now called from the end of the hallway. "Good work, Atsushi."
Atsushi relaxed in an instant. "Doppo. Right on time."
Kunikida had arrived with the armed security guards behind him. The blond was reading from his notebook. "Nemo. The leader of a gang known for theft. Yet, despite his extraordinary Ability, allowing him to walk through walls. His success rate for heists is pitiable. His vague and reckless plans have caused nearly all his heists to fail. Causing all his subordinates to lose patience and quit. Leaving only the painfully ametur. He's been arrested more often than not. Yet never faced trial. Because he walks out of the jail through the walls. This has happened a reported eighty-nine times. Which. Is rather impressive for an escape artist. If I were him. I'd market myself as a Master of Escape as opposed to a Phantom thief."
Nemo growled in frustration. "Do something about them, you two!"
Gab, still on the floor, shaking like a leaf, responded. "S-sorry, Boss. Still having trouble getting my legs to work."
"I'm just a humble engineer. I'll gladly turn myself in. I want to go home."
Both of them started moving towards Kunikida. Gab crawling on the floor. Virgo walking forward steadily with his hands out for someone to cuff him.
The more these thieves spoke. The more Atsushi truly did pity them. Gab was just a kid. And it was clear Virgo just wanted to find some excitement in his dull life. Nemo obviously wanted greatness, but went about it the wrong way.
"Well then." Kunikida shut his notebook and looked to Atsushi, satisfied. "I suppose this brings this job to a close. And after not even an hour. Your dad will be quite pleased with you especially, Atsushi. Call the Captain and tell him we have the thieves."
The weretiger perked up at that. He liked making his dad proud. But he knew this wasn't over yet. There was still Osamu's mission. He didn't know how that was going, and he wasn't sure his brother was able to help contacted at this second. But he could do what the blond requested. He'd call the Captain.
"Boss, please." Gab started as the security guards started to surround the thieves. "Run away. I will take the fall. Just please run away."
 Nemo didn't even blink. "Run away?" He didn't make any notion to even thinking of listening. "The Great thief Lupin didn't have any comrades. Nor any Ability such as mine. But even then. He was able to accomplish feats that I could never dream of in a million years. He is immortal due to the legends. I'm already aware that I will never be as great. And I will never surpass him."
Atsushi noticed that Nemo was leaning forward slightly. Like he was slowly hunching over in pain. His eyes were focused, fixed on something only he could see.
"But I am not Lupin. We aren't the same. And so I hold onto what I have that Lupin never did." Nemo put a hand to his chest. "My Ability to go through objects with a thickness of two inches or less. The reverse is also true. I can put items of that size within my body, able to avoid detection." Out of his chest was pulled a small metal plate. Which clattered to the floor loudly. "I will never abandon my men in such an ungentlemanly fashion."
Kunikida grabbed Atsushi's arm and pulled him back. "It's a bomb!" The older detective shouted, alerting everyone.
Atsushi immediately turned into his full tiger form for just a moment. Using his larger form to shield everyone just as the bomb went off. Filling the room with a blinding light and deafening sound.
When the smoke cleared. Atsushi noted that he didn't feel any pain. As bulletproof as he may be in tiger form, he could still feel pain. But at this moment. No pain.
He turned back into a human just as Kunikida yelled. "Damn it! It's a smoke-screen! Atsushi, find the thieves! They probably went through the walls!"
Atsushi did as he was asked and started knocking at the walls. Listening for a section that sounded thinner than the rest. Which happened quickly. His knuckles hit a metal sliding door painted the same color as the walls. "Through here!"
Kunikida rushed to his side. The air was clearing up quickly "Use your coin."
The weretiger held the coin up to the door where a sensor lock would be. But nothing happened.
"That's weird." Kunikida said. "Let me try mine." He held his own silver coin to the door. Still nothing
One of the security guards approached them. "Sirs, please step away from the door. You do not have permission to enter that area."
"What?" Kunikida frowned at the guard. "What do you mean? We were hired to catch the thieves. They clearly just escaped through there. We need to go catch them."
The guard gave a sympathetic grimace. "I understand that, Sir. But not even we security guards are allowed in there. Only those with gold coins can access it."
Atsushi was starting to panic a little bit. They hadn't been told anything about gold coins. Just bronze and silver. "What about Captain Walston? He surely has access!"
"No, sir. Captain Walston doesn't have access either. But you may call him if it would make you feel better."
Pulling out his phone, which somehow had signal. Atsushi dialed the number he'd saved from the debriefing paperwork earlier. But as the phone went to voicemail. An ominous feeling washed over him. "He's not picking up."
"Try him again, Atsushi." Kunikida urged.
Trying and trying and trying again. There was still no answer. But yet. "Doppo. Listen…do you hear that?"
From the other side of the door. Atsushi could hear the flute melody from earlier. Walston's phone was on the other side.
Atsushi put his phone away. "Help me open this door!"
Kunikida joined him in trying to pry open the door. Even with it not budging at all. Then suddenly, the door slid open so fast Atsushi stumbled backwards.
"Stand back!" Men in bulletproof masks hiding their faces shouted from the now open door. These soldiers were very large. All carrying machine guns. Covered head to toe in bulletproof armor. They formed a blockade preventing anyone from seeing inside the doorway.
Kunikida glared at them incredulously. "Excuse me!?"
 "This area is off limits. Failure to comply will be seen as a sign of hostility and excessive force will be taken! This is your final warning!"
The dozen armed men pointed their guns at Kunikida. A threat. But it was likely more dangerous for them than it was for Kunikida. And honestly, Akutagawa was scarier than this to Atsushi.
The blond simply glared at them. "This is also your final warning. We were hired to track down these thieves. And we will complete this job. I don't care that this island has extraterritorial rights. You will not threaten civilians with gunfire." His tone and body language screamed of antagonism. Like he was daring them to shoot.
"Well, well, well." A new voice said from behind the men. "Look what we gave here. Men, stand down and lower your weapons. You can't intimidate this one."
The dozen men parted, and out stepped a man so short, even if he hadn't been standing beside men all taller than Kunikida, he would've looked short. He had a warm expression and fluffy white hair. His attire was that of a military officer. But his demeanor was more akin to that of a teacher from the countryside.
"Are you the leader of these military soldiers?" Kunikida asked, indignantly.
"That I am, young man."
"Then please let me and my associate through. We were hired to capture those thieves by Captain Walston." It was obvious that Kunikida was losing his patience at the same rate Atsushi was.
The old man hummed, deep in thought. "You've got the makings of a great soldier. But sorry, son. No can do. You need a gold coin to access this area beyond the door. And you both have silver. Those are given to general staff. Only high ranking personnel are given gold. And if I just let you in. You'd never leave this island alive. Even your country's leader agreed to such a law on this island for any Japanese citizens who happen to spend any time here."
"Well how do we get these gold coins?" Atsushi interrupted. "Please, this is important."
"Worry not, lad. Those thieves have already been caught." The old man said.
Both Atsushi and Kunikida froze. "Really?" They said in unison.
The old man shook his head, amused. "This is a top secret zone with security cameras and seasoned soldiers akin to government protection detail. Do not underestimate them."
Kunikida eyed the man with thinly veiled suspicion. "Very well. We'll need to confirm with our client. May I ask your name?'
"They call me Colonel. No surname. Just Colonel."
 "Are you an army civilian?"
"Indeed I am." The old man clasped his hands behind his back. While his mannerisms and appearance gave that of an old school teacher. Atsushi could see a series of white scar tissue running down his face. And his build, even as an elderly man was visibly well-toned. His must have trained his body hard in his youth.
Atsushi sneezed, the remnants of the smoke bomb irritating his nose. With his sinuses cleared, finally. A strong scent hit him like a brick wall. A strong *iron heavy* smell.
"No!" He shouted and pushed past the soldiers, in through the door. After all. What could measly soldiers do against a weretiger's strength?
"Young man! What the blazes do you think you're doing!?" The Colonel shouted. "Get back or you will be shot!"
Immediately he found the source. The room beyond the door. Absolutely covered in blood. Floor to ceiling. And there was…"Oh god."
One of the soldiers shoved Atsushi back. Forcing him out of the room. He stumbled and fell into his friend's arms.
"Atsushi, are you alright?"
"Doppo." Atsushi fought to keep the tremor out of his voice. "There's a dead body. On the floor."
The Colonel grimaced. "So you saw. Well lads. I am very sorry about this. But I just can't let you go. You know far too much. And as I said. All information in gold coin zones are to be kept top secret."
"Atsushi, kid. Do you recognize the body?" Kunikida gripped Atsushi's arms firmly. "Was it one of the thieves."
Atsushi shook his head. It wasn't one of the thieves. It was a man in a blue worker's uniform. In one hand, a cellphone Atsushi had seen before. "It was the Captain. Captain Walston is dead."
><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><
In an interrogation room, in one of the underground levels. Atsushi and Kunikida were handcuffed to two chairs that were bolted to the ground.
They were being shown the camera footage of Walston's final moments. The Captain was walking down the hallway. And even without sound, based on how frequently his shoulders kept dropping, he was sighing and yawning the way he normally did.
He'd reached the end of the hallway when a shadowed figure turned the corner. Before Walston could even react. The shadowy figure had pulled out a pistol and shot the Captain. Sending him flying back. His blood splattering the walls, ceiling, and floor. Moments later, the figure shot him again, and again. Until Walston stopped moving.
Each shot illuminated the hallway, and before long. Walston was dead. His blood painting the walls crimson.
The figure turned and faced the camera. It was a man, in a suit, with a camera around his neck. Based on the features of his face that Atsushi could see, the man was British. But part of his face was obscured by a bowler hat. Which also hid his hair color and the shape of his face. He could've been anywhere between 20 and 40 years old for all Atsushi could tell. Despite having just killed a man in cold blood. This man looked into the camera calmly. His blue eyes completely void of emotion as he aimed the gun at the camera and fired, ending the footage.
One thing was for certain. This man was The Foreseer. The man Osamu had warned him about. The one that supposedly would cause the destruction of Yokohama and the Island.
Both Atsushi and Kunikida scrutinized the footage closely. There wasn't much else they could do at this moment. The interrogation room they're in was baren beyond the table, chairs, and a trash can in the corner of the room that reeked of dead fish to Atsushi. The only ways out were the door and a ventilation shaft in the center of the ceiling.
The Colonel turned off the monitor. "That is all the footage we have of Walston's murder." His tone was calm, like he was discussing the weather.
"'Colonel', was it?" Kunikida was definitely trying to get a rise out of the old man. "As I told you when you escorted us in here. We came here as private detectives, hired by Captain Walston to track down thieves after the jeweled truffles. We came here through the proper channels. We even have a permit issued by the Japanese government. I have the utmost respect for your authority. But I must request that you let us leave. You have no true reason to hold us here. And thus this is unjust."
Atsushi resisted the urge to give his friend a questioning look. The only person whose authority Kunikida respected was Atsushi's father. So there was definitely a reason the blond would be telling such a bold faced lie.
The Colonel smiled cooly. "I see."
Both of the detectives waited for the man to continue. But as the seconds stretched on it was clear he wouldn't. Atsushi could hear the engines running, keeping the island afloat. As well as the heartbeats of everyone in the room. And unfortunately the trashcan as well.
Atsushi cleared his throat. "Uh, sir. What's with the silence?"
"Boys, are you aware this island sails the seas at will?"
Kunikida blinked. "Well, yes. That's one of the few things that everyone knows about this island."
Still smiling, the Colonel continued. "This island isn't within the jurisdiction of any country. So the standards of the land don't apply. What you call unjust? It's perfectly just here."
"That's absurd!" Kunikida yelled. "This island is controlled by England, Germany, and France. Surely this is illegal by the standards of all three! And why did you show us this footage?!
The Colonel leaned forward. "I'll gladly tell you why. Myself and my men are part of France's secret forces. Tasked with guarding the top secret zones within the island. And now we are after this murderer."
"I would hope so." Kunikida responded dryly. "A high ranking member of this island was just killed."
"Oh. We have already identified him. We got a hit on our database. He is an internationally wanted terrorist."
"A terrorist?!" Kunikida repeated in astonishment.
The Colonel sat back. "Yes. A terrorist. We only know him as 'The Foreseer.' He is always present at the scene of horrific terrorist attacks. Where he goes, tragedy follows. He's been marked as dangerous by the government of most every country on Earth. He's been a person of interest for the past decade. We think he has the Ability to predict the future. Which is why we have not had success in finding him. Until now"
Atsushi stayed silent. He already knew this. Osamu's quick words were more than enough to give Atsushi the basic rundown of the situation.
"But what does that have to do with us? The closest thing to a terrorist attack we've been involved in was a member of our local crime syndicate trying to blow up a train." Kunikida asked. "That my associate and his sisters prevented from happening."
The smile on the Colonel's face grew smug. "That question is simple to answer. We believe that The Foreseer has ties to your agency."
"What!?" Both of the detectives shouted.
Atsushi tapped his fingers together to keep himself calm and collected. "Sir. I can guarantee. No member of our agency has any connection to that man. I personally was part of the vetting process of each detective's hiring. I would know if anyone had any connection to a man such a this."
"This is true." Kunikida nodded. "There is no doubt in either of our minds that no one at the Agency was ever even acquaintances with that man. We were hired to catch the thieves and that's it."
The Colonel hummed. "Interesting. Very interesting. Then why? Is there no record of you being hired for such a job?"
Both Kunikida and Atsushi froze. What the hell was that supposed to mean?
"The only person who could confirm your employment for this job has been killed. And the coins you were given? Are for painters we hired last week to paint the exteriors of some buildings." The Colonel sounded gleeful now. "The Armed Detective Agency exists, sure. But we have absolutely no records of you being hired to come here. And no matter how much your country's government insists that you were. They have no authority here!"
Kunikida clenched his fists. "That's ridiculous. If we weren't hired. Then why not declare us tourists?!"
"You were on the other side of the door, behind which, Captain Walston was murdered by The Foreseer." The older man sighed almost dreamily. "It doesn't help your case that every single person in your agency is a highly accomplished and capable Gifted individual."
A chill ran down Atsushi's spine. "What did you do with our friends?" He clenched his own fists. His nails biting into the leather of his fingerless gloves. "What did you do to my sister!?" Akiko could hold her own without anyone's else's help. If she'd had her bag with her. He'd be more afraid of what Akiko would do to the guards. But she didn't have her bag. It was back in her room at the hotel.
"Worry not. Your friends are being held in a secure location. You'll all be together soon enough. Even if you never leave this island." Leaning forward. The Colonel stood up to intimidate them. "You can help yourselves by telling us what the Foreseer is after."
Kunikida grit his teeth. "We don't know!"
Atsushi thought back to what Osamu had told him. The Foreseer would potentially bring the destruction on Yokohama and Standard Island. A jolt electrified Atsushi into trying, and failing, to stand. "Sir! Please. We can stop this. If the Foreseer is a harbribger of destruction. Then the island is in danger!"
A smug smile adorned the Colonel's face. "Looks like you do know something after all. I figured you were terrorists. Glad to hear proven right. Apologies, boys. I must leave you now. I need to ask the higher ups how to deal with you."
The Colonel left through the only door with a flourish. A clear pep in his step.
Atsushi slammed his head into the table. "I. Hate. Dealing. With. The. Government!"
"You and me both." Kunikida sat back as much as he could.
"Yeah yeah. Mr. 'I have the utmost respect for you and your authority'. I'm going to hit you with The Leg when we get back home."
"I hated saying it. It felt wrong." The blond made a face like he'd eaten something sour. "How are we going to get out of here?"
Atsushi sighed, head still on the table. "Ask Osamu."
His friend eyed him like he'd grown a second head. "Dazai's not here. Unless you're seeing things again."
Lifting his head. Atsushi used it to gesture to the trash can in the corner. "Yes he is. Unless that trash can in the corner is one of my hallucinations."
From the trash can, Osamu's voice sounded. He was definitely pouting. "You're a real spoilsport, Atsushi! For shame!"
"Get out of the trash, Osamu. You're still trying to live up to that nickname I gave you, Kani-neko." Atsushi asked of his brother.
The lid popped off, and out came Osamu. Cheerful as ever. "Have no fear. For your devilishly handsome brother is here! To save you and our dear Kunikida-kun!" He said with a wink.
~~~~~~~[Akutagawa Pov]~~~~~~

On the southern most point of the island, Ryūnosuke was annoyed at how pleasant this day was. The sun was shining, the birds were singing. Their song being carried in a gentle breeze. But here he was, standing inside a monastery.

Ryūnosuke really hated this part of the kill. Waiting, hiding out until the target shows themselves. He'd much rather just hunt them down. Then perhaps he could go home and relax while his sister was out gallivanting with that fool. And perhaps that scraggly thing that's presumably a cat would join him.

But alas. For now he stood in the shadows of the monastery. Waiting for the men who had stolen from the bank under the protection of the Port Mafia. A tendril of Rashōmon snaked across the floor, lying in wait to trap them.

"Ugh! I can't believe it was twenty-four dollars to get in this place!" The sounds of four sets of footsteps echoed in the building off the pristine, elaborately carved walls and floors.

Four men in business attire came into view. One of them responded. "It was twenty-five dollars, thirty-eight cents, dipshit."

Another groaned. "I thought that job was supposed to make us rich. But everything here is too damned expensive."

The last of the group was looking at the floor as they came to the trap Ryūnosuke had set. He had stepped onto the cloth. "Hey. What's this cloth for?"

Before the man's companions could even turn around, Ryūnosuke had enveloped him in his ability and pulled him into the shadows.

The three remaining men immediately got into fighting stance. As members of those who lived in neither the light nor the dark. They clearly had some fighting skills. Too bad their situational awareness was severely lacking. They didn't even notice the writhing lengths of black fabric materializing above them.

As he lifted another of the men up into the ceiling with his ability. The remaining two looked around frantically. But it was useless. The second anyone was caught in Ryūnosuke's Ability, they were dead.

The two men in his grasp screamed as Ryūnosuke crushed their organs. The squishing sounds echoing down from the ceiling along with their screams.

"Aaagh!" One of the still alive men screamed. "What the hell!?!"

Blood poured down from above them and coated the floor and the two men. Like something out of a horror movie.

Without even pausing to check what was happening, or to find their friends. The two men started to run. But it was no use.

Ryūnosuke stepped out of the shadows. Choosing that moment to drop the mangled remains of what had been the other half of the group.

"Shit!" The other remaining man shouted. "We're not even safe from the Port Mafia's assassins here?!"

Flaring his Ability, Ryūnosuke spoke. "Silence. Even a goat when hunted by the wolves does not cry this much. Are you admitting to be worse prey than a goat? You do seem to have less sense than one."

Ryūnosuke's coat took on the form of an ever hungry dragon. Never satisfied. Always wanting more.

One of the men looked on in horror. "Oh god! You're the hellhound of the Port Mafia!"

"It seems that you do have some brains in you." The sub-executive noted. "And at least you and your companions had the good sense to run away the second you learned that you had crossed the Port Mafia. If you hadn't. Your lives would've ended yesterday." He cast Rashōmon out like a net. Which quickly wrapped around the two men. Lifting them up into the air. Hanging by their feet. Only their faces exposed. "Your only job now is to die painfully and show the world what happens when you cross the Port Mafia."

"No! Stop!" One man yelled.

"We didn't come here to run away! There's a wonderful treasure here." The other continued. "Surely it would make up for what we stole!"

Ryūnosuke sighed in disappointment. "Begging for your life. How typical. I guess that's where your sense runs out. I used to lend an ear to those who begged for their lives. But now, I'm weary of the lies and gibberish dying men spew. Save it for those you will meet in hell."

Just as he started to tighten the fabric around them. One of them screamed. "We're telling the truth!"

"We swear!" The other shouted. "We were going to steal it and bring it back to give to the Port Mafia!"

Ryūnosuke paused, his face a mask of impassivity, then loosened his ability. "You have five seconds to start speaking. And if your stories contradict in the slightest. I'll have your heads."

"The treasure is apparently this incredible weapon!" One of them said.

The other nodded best he could. "It was made by a European Gifted engineer right at the end of The War! One of my associates on the black market told me." He took a deep breath. "But a terrorist stole it and snuck it onto this island!"

"A terrorist?" Ryūnosuke grimaced. Oh this was shaping up to be a headache. There went his plans to go home early. He set the men down. "Elaborate. Now."

The first man nodded. "Not much is known about this terrorist. Just that he shows up whenever disaster is about to strike. They call him the Foreseer. But I can tell you about the weapon!"

Ryūnosuke made a 'go on' motion with his hand.

"It's codename is 'Shell'. But the proper name is Annihilation." The man continued. "The range it can destroy is up to 20 square miles. We haven't been able to get in contact with the person who told us in several days. We think he was killed for it."

At that range…Ryūnosuke did the math. That would be enough to destroy not only this floating island, but the majority of Yokohama proper. "I see." He muttered. "Higuchi. Your thoughts?"

Higuchi appeared from behind a pillar where she'd hidden in the event their prey tried escaping. "It's plausible, Sir. Europe is full of many Gifted with extraordinary Abilities. It would make sense if one of them could create a weapon capable of that level of destruction. One of Chuuya-san's close friends keeps tabs on The Order of the Clocktower. If we had time. We could ask him to contact his friend. But I'm afraid we don't have that kind of time."

She was right. Though Ryūnosuke wished she wasn't. "What absolute arrogance. Europe is free to play with weapons in their own counties. But the second they threaten these waters. This terrorist's life is forfeit." He addressed the men. "What does the weapon look like?"

"It looks like an old fashioned camera. The type that takes film. It's being carried in a black briefcase."

Higuchi hummed, deep in thought. "Akutagawa-senpai, sir. This is valuable information. If we were to get ahold of this 'Shell'. It would prove useful to deter other syndicates from threatening Yokohama. We'd be the most powerful city in the country. Or, if the boss wants us to. We can sell it to the Division. and be the wealthiest syndicate in the country. Dare say, even more so than those North American fools from The Guild were in their prime."

"True. Very true, Higuchi. You make a very good point." Ryūnosuke acknowledged. "Very well. That is what we shall do." Once again, he acknowledged the two men. "Usually the crimes you have committed against the Port Mafia would warrant your torture and execution. But. Your information was valuable and appreciated."

The two men looked hopeful. One of them spoke. "Does that mean?"

"However." Ryūnosuke smiled sinisterly. "The accountant you killed yesterday? He was a senior ranking official who had served the Port Mafia for many years. He was, a dear friend to the boss. And a man who treated me with kindness and respect. A valued associate of mine. So unfortunately." Rashōmon wound itself around the two men, constricting them like a boa constrictor. "You still must die. But I will grant you the mercy of a quick demise. Out of gratitude for the information."

The sounds of bones cracking and organs bursting filled the air. Yet neither Ryūnosuke nor Higuchi flinched. The latter was making notes in a small notepad she'd taken to carrying with her. This was nowhere near the most gruesome way they'd killed anyone.

Ryūnosuke dropped the bodies back onto the floor before turning towards the door. "Come along, Higuchi. We have a new mission. This is now a matter of utmost urgency."

"Right away, sir."

~~~~~~~~~[Atsushi POV]~~~~~
"Ow! Kunikida-kun! Stop kicking me!" Osamu cried out dramatically as Kunikida, still handcuffed to the table, was kicking him. "Your Deus ex machina arrives, and you kick me!"
"No! You're a nitwit and I can't believe you're so foolish! What gave you the bright idea to swim here? And then hide in trash cans!?" Kunikida kicked the trash can holding Osamu again. Making it roll around loudly. "Deus ex machina? Don't make me laugh.
Atsushi sighed dramatically. "Doppo. Please stop kicking him so he can uncuff us. Osamu please stop being annoying for five minutes. We're in danger."
Osamu, still in the trash can– was he stuck or something?– rolled over to stand behind them both. His hands were free so it took him no time to use a pin to unlock the handcuffs holding Kunikida and Atsushi.
Kunikida rubbed his wrists to get the marks to fade. "What's this about danger? You can't mean us being stuck down here."
The brunet shook his head. "The job we were given to catch the thieves was just a plot to get us on the island. Ango and Chief Taneda gave dad a note to give to me. Regarding our real mission. Which Walston was in on. He helped find an excuse to get as many of us on the island as possible."
Atsushi grabbed his brother by the shoulders and lifted him out of the trash can. "The Foreseer?"
"Correct as always, baby brother of mine!" Osamu pat him on the head with a smile on his face. "I was there when you two were confronted by the guards. I've been tracking down the Foreseer all day. But you're the only one's who've gotten so close to him. A shame that Captain Walston died. While gloomy, he seemed like a decent guy. But! I can finally tell you all the information I have! So your opinion of me can only get better!"
"That's easy. My opinion of you can't get any lower." Kunikida rolled his eyes. "What's the deal with this Foreseer person? And what kind of weapon does he have?"
"One that could destroy both this island, Yokohama, and parts of the surrounding cities." Osamu said grimly. "Atsushi. Think to the footage you were just shown. And think of what I told you earlier."
Atsushi frowned. What was different? Osamu told him to watch for a man with a camera around his neck and a… "He's missing the briefcase!"
"Correct!" Osamu sat on the table. "The briefcase contains the weapon. But the Foreseer doesn't have it! It's supposedly supposed to be held on one of these top secret floors, which is why I smuggled myself onto the island. I wanted to steal a couple gold coins. I wanted to take the briefcase from him. But if he doesn't have it. It would be near impossible to find it now."
"Of course that's why you swam here." Kunikida facepalmed. "But what are we going to do about the weapon?"
"From what I've gathered. It's code name is The Shell. But it's official title is Annihilation. Unfortunately. I fell into the terrorist's trap by getting stuck in here. But with luck. The terrorist is going to fall into my trap as well."
Kunikida groaned and rubbed his temples. "What is your trap then? And how are we supposed to capture this Foreseer if we're all stuck here? I don't have my notebook, it was confiscated. Atsushi doesn't have his katana."
"I was told to look inconspicuous and I interpreted that as to not being my sword. I'll remember that I'm likely to get fucking kidnapped and held hostage next time." Atsushi said bitterly. "And don't forget that everyone else is apparently also being held captive."
Osamu shook his head. "All except Naomi. She was doing some sight seeing on her own while Jun'ichiro took a nap to get rid of his nausea. Naomi is safe. Don't worry. We both trained her well. She's looking into the incidents that the Foreseer was present at in the past."
"As wonderful as it is that Naomi is alright. Please get back to the plan." Kunikida asked of them both.
The brunet smiled and poked Kunikida and Atsushi both on their noses. "I placed a decoy briefcase on the top floor of the clock tower! It's got a capsule in it that will tranquilize him with gas the second he touches it. A bit basic in my opinion. But it'll do the trick." He looked at Atsushi. "As for how we'll capture him. Atsushi will escape through the vents in the ceiling."
"Why not you?" Atsushi scrunched his nose, which was still being poked by his brother. Making his Ability not active. "You're more willowy than me. You could climb through."
"Because I'm about to be captured as well. The Colonel has no doubt been alerted that I'm in here."
As he said it. Sounds of hurrying feet drew closer. And the angry voices of men giving and receiving orders were echoing through the halls. Even if they were incoherent through the doors.
Atsushi stepped back and looked up at the ceiling. "Ugh, fine. I'll do it. But I'll kick your ass if I lose a limb to this Foreseer guy."
He climbed onto the table carefully and quickly. Tensing his legs. Atsushi leapt up and knocked the vent cover into the vents. One transformed hand gripped the edge of the opening. With one last look to his friend and his brother. Atsushi said, "Stay alive you two."
"Don't worry about us, Kid. We can handle ourselves." Kunikida urged him away. The sounds of people were getting closer. Practically right outside the door.
Osamu gave him a thumbs up. "Go right. You'll reach the surface in no time. Good luck, Tiger!"
Atsushi nodded and pulled himself up into the vent just as the door burst open and the sounds of fighting commenced. But he couldn't hang back and help them. Even if it hurt him to leave them behind. It was like Kunikida said. They were capable. They could handle themselves. Atsushi didn't need to worry. It was fine. They'd be fine.
He did as his brother said and went right. Following the smells of fresh air and the sounds of tourists. This was perhaps the most important thing Atsushi would ever do. The fate of his city depended on him. He had to do this. Atsushi wouldn't fail. He *couldn't*.
><><><><><><><><><><><><>
The clocktower stood in the center of the island. It was the tallest building aside from the windmills, and could be visible from anywhere above ground. It was a monument of unity. Unlike most clocktowers. It was not rectangular. But instead triangular. Each face was directed to face each territory. France, England, and Germany.
Atsushi walked down the cobblestone pathway towards the tower. While the island was quite large. It was easily navigable. It didn't take long to get anywhere. Especially for Atsushi with his tiger speed. According to the time on the clock. It was 11:54.
The brief thought occured to Atsushi that maybe he should save everyone else first. Naomi was the only one still free. And she was the only one that had come along that didn't have an ability. But she was smart and a capable fighter thanks to the efforts of Atsushi, Osamu. And their dad. The thought of having to confront a terrorist, let alone one so legendary, all alone made Atsushi scared to his core. But no, he had to do this now. There wasn't any time to dillydally.
Atsushi was pulled out of his thoughts suddenly. As if he'd been slapped with his own leg. There he was. The man from the camera footage. He was slightly shorter than Atsushi. But that was definitely the Foreseer. Walking a few yards ahead of Atsushi. Clearly the British man hadn't noticed his presence.
The weretiger kept a safe distance. Following the Foreseer inside the Clocktower. The first floor was a museum open to the public. Showcasing the history and construction of this island. Were the city and island not in danger. Atsushi would probably enjoy looking around the museum.
Atsushi pretended to be a tourist while keeping the terrorist in sight. Watching him as he rushed to a service elevator. Osamu's plan must be working.
The weretiger followed, eyeing the display that said what floor the Foreseer was heading to. The top floor. The observation deck. Once the elevator returned. Atsushi entered and hit the button for the floor below the top one. He'd use the stairs for the last stretch. That way he could ambush the Foreseer.
 Once he reached the floor below the observation deck– an unused radar facility– Atsushi made the effort to quiet his footsteps as he made his way to stairs. This clocktower was apparently just like a flying tower on a boat. It served the purpose of observing ships and aircrafts that got within range of the island. Truly very fascinating. But not what Atsushi was here for.
The observation deck was a sight to behold. It gave a 360° view of the entire island and the skyline back on land. Even without Atsushi's enhanced vision thanks to his Ability. He would've been able to see Yokohama from here, to the north of the island.
But what caught Atsushi's attention was the other person in the room. The Foreseer was looking around, likely for the briefcase. Atsushi watched him from behind the doorway leading in from the stairwell. He was wearing the felt bowler hat and suit from earlier. And the camera was still around his neck.
It wasn't long before he found the briefcase. Atsushi just stood back and watched. The trap would go off the second The Foreseer touched it. So Atsushi didn't have to do anything yet. Once the trap was triggered. Atsushi could bring the terrorist into custody. Then four million lives would be saved.
But strangely enough. The man didn't even attempt to touch the briefcase. He just stood back a couple feet and observed it. Which made Atsushi panic slightly. The man had been so eager to find it before. Had he figured out it was a decoy? What changed? Was he suspicious that it was too easy?
If that was the case. Then Atsushi had no choice but to attack. To knock the terrorist out manually. He quickly focused his power into his legs. From the knee down, they were tiger legs. Hidden underneath the denim jeans he was wearing today.
Then. To his abject horror. The Foreseer pulled out his pistol and shot the briefcase. One shot after the other. He filled the decoy briefcase with lead until his gun was empty and the smell of gunpowder filled the room. The sound of something metal breaking inside as the briefcase fell open.
Atsushi couldn't hold back his shocked "What!?"
The Foreseer spun around. "Who goes there?!" His voice was…much higher than Atsushi was anticipating. Closer to that of an early teenage boy's voice. He pointed his gun at Atsushi. "What're you doing here?! Are you the one that put The Shell here? Don't you know how dangerous that things is?"
Outside. The island started to shake violently.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
The real briefcase sat in a dimly lit room. The lid was open and the machinery was whirring softly. Inside was a simple camera surrounded by shock absorbant resin. A few wires rested on a piece of old parchment with ancient words written on it.
A pale finger ran over the outer shell of the device. Switching the placement of a few wires before gently pressing the shutter button.
Glowing red circles burst out of the where the flash on a normal camera would emit light. The circles stacking on top of each other until they surrounded the person who had activated it. Lifting them into the air.
The individual who activated The Shell muttered something as the room– no, the very island began to shake. Causing tremors in the ocean. But their voice was lost to the grating sound of Annihilation.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
The sky was dyed red. A horrible deep blood red that could only be described as terror.
Atsushi felt sick as he shouted. "What the hell!?" The entire landscape was turning red. The island, the sky, the ocean, even Yokohama in the distance. And he immediately understood why. The sky was being blocked out. Covered by a brilliant vermillion film.
"No!" Screamed the terrorist. "No no no!" His head was in his hands. "That briefcase was a fake!? I'm too late!"
Atsushi rushed over to the Foreseer's side. "What's happening? What is that red thing?!" He hoped that it wasn't what he thought it was. He really hoped. Because if it was. Then that means he'd failed.
The Foreseer grabbed his wrist. "That's The Shell. The crimson celestial sphere of Annihilation. If you value your life and want to stop what's happening, you need to come with me." He started pulling Atsushi along.
"Who are you?" Atsushi demanded, terrified.
Blue eyes met his. "I came here to stop that weapon from going off." The hand not holding Atsushi's wrist reached up to its owner's face and dug in.
False skin punctured and peeled away in a matter of seconds. Changing the shape of the eyes, brows, jaw, and nose. As the skin fell away. The Foreseer removed their bowler hat, revealing long blonde hair belonging to a woman maybe a few years older than Atsushi.
"My name is H.G. Wells. I came here to stop the catastrophe at hand." Wells said seriously. Her eyes as sharp as glass. "Kid. Are you prepared to hold the weight of the future on your shoulders?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Within The Shell. A blazing fireball started to grow at the very far edge of Yokohama. Simply touching the fireball turned the mountains and trees to ash. Buildings and roads melted. Not even the ground was safe from it.

The crust of the earth started to melt. At a temperature so hot. It could not be called burning anymore. It was, to put it bluntly, Annihilation. Sweeping forward towards the ocean.

Half a million people perished within the first five seconds. It was so fast that no one felt any pain. They were simply there one second, gone the next. Turned to not even ash, but plasma.

Outside the Shell, not even a faint hint of heat escaped. Where as within, it could only be described as Hell of biblical proportions. The sea didn't even get the chance to boil.

Countless lives. Gone as if they'd never existed. Their love, hatred, memories. All ceased to be in moments.

The destruction reached Standard Island in less than three minutes. Melting the buildings like a summer day melts a child's ice cream.

Kunikida and Dazai looked at the sky in horror.

"Dazai…what is this?" Kunikida asked, the broken handcuffs the guards had tried to put back on him. Dangling from his wrists limply.

The brunet's face was the picture of numbness. "The weapon an Ability.…. we're too late."

"An Ability?! No. That's not possible. This goes beyond that scope of what Abilities can do."

The ineffable heat reached them. But they felt no pain. Not as their flesh evaporated, their bones turned to ash, or the air in their lungs turned to smoke.

Dazai had tried to say something. But it, like him and millions of others, was burned away never to be heard.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Kid!" Wells shouted. "Do you trust me?" She had a wire wrapped within a pulley around her waist and she'd shot open a window. "If you want your friends to live. You have to trust me!"
Atsushi didn't know if he did. Until a few seconds ago. He'd thought she was a terrorist. But. He had no other choice. To save his friends, his family, his home. He grabbed her hand tightly. Ignoring the freezing cold terror taking over him.
"Jump!" She shouted again. And he did, transforming his legs into tigers legs again to help with the landing.
As they fell. Atsushi was horrified at what he saw. What had been the sea vaporizing and expanding faster than the Shell. The unbearable heat scorching Atsushi's throat. This was the end of the world.
A few meters from the ground, Wells unhooked herself from the wire. She wrapped her arms around Atsushi, preparing to land.
His tiger legs cushioned the fall. But he'd barely caught his bearings before Wells was pulling him along. "There's an underground bunker in the forest ahead. Hurry!"
To save time, Atsushi picked Wells up and let her direct him. He could run faster than anyone else. Within seconds they reached the iron double doors, which were held shut with a heavy lock.
"We've got less than 15 seconds before the heatwave hits us. No time to unlock it. We have to pry it open!" Wells tried to pry it open with her knife. But that would take too long.
Atsushi transformed his arms and wrenched it open. Even with this supernatural strength. It was difficult. But he did it. Throwing the doors open.
"Jump in, Kid!"
In a leap of faith. Atsushi did as she told him. Diving into the darkness below as the heat burned off his eyebrows.
~~~~~~~~~~~[Akutagawa]~~~~~~~~~~~~

Akutagawa Ryūnosuke watched the sky turn crimson. "Higuchi! Answer me! Where are you?" His shouts into the phone were cut off by a painful fit of coughs. His blood boiling as it hit the ground at his feet.

He had a hard enough time breathing to begin with. But the heatwave melting his surroundings was causing all the moisture in his throat to burn him from the inside out. '*So this is Annihilation.*' He mused as his eyelashes burned away and hid eyes stung from the moisture evaporating.

Nevertheless. Ryūnosuke smiled. Soft and peaceful. He had known, from the moment he'd been brought into the Port Mafia, that his chances of living a long life were slim to none. Even if he weren't so sickly. The only members who'd made it past their 30s were Hirotsu and Mori. So to meet his end now. Ryūnosuke felt at peace.

It was far different than he'd imagined. But much less painful. He supposed it could be worse.

Rashōmon curled around him in the Demonic Armor form. His soul screaming out and begging the universe that it wasn't time yet. The coat was still just a coat. Which he was reminded as it burned around him.

And yet.

He looked towards the skies, crimson and horrible. And muttered to himself as he fell to his knees, no longer able to support him while the island sank. "Even if one were to bathe in the eternal winds and simply become foam in the great sea without ever knowing who they were– without even getting a farewell…." His words turned to vapor, like a prayer to the heavens. "…the heart shall not move, for it is nothing compared with the loneliness of passing…without you ever knowing."

As The Shell reached him. He felt a brief moment of sorrow that his cat was alone when it happened. That his sister was gone. That he'd never do anything about his feelings for the weretiger.

As his flesh bubbled and burned away. The final words he spoke were with a smile. "Right now…that is all that brings me sorrow."

But the words further evaporated. Leaving nothing more than a smile no one would ever see.

~~~~~~~[Atsushi]~~~~~~~
"You alive?" Wells nudged Atsushi in the darkness.
Atsushi groaned. His head hurt and he was freezing. It had to have been from the rapid temperature shift. It was by no means cool in this bunker. But compared to the outside and the Hell it had become. This was practically a winter wonderland. Even though outside it had to still be burning.
Wells flipped a switch and the room lit up with a dim light. "Come on, Tiger. On your feet. We only have a few minutes. I can only slow down time enough to give you what you need to know and how to do it.
As Atsushi got to his feet. He took in his surroundings. The room was bare gray stone from ceilings. The only light came from a lamp on a table. The only furniture in the room. Wells looked at him grimly. "Ma'am. What do you mean you slowed down time? Where are we?"
"I mean just that." She helped him straighten up. "This room is on the island. But within it, I can slow down time. We only have about five minutes until The Shell catches up with us and this room ceased to exist. So I need you to listen very closely. Okay?"
He nodded seriously. He didn't want to waste any time. "How do we reverse it?"
"We can't." She said sadly. The camera around her neck was now on the table. The flash was getting brighter. "The weapon was activated and now the land and ocean around us no longer exist. Everything within a twenty-two mile radius. By my calculations. Four million people perished.
Atsushi looked at the door. But it was gone. Only replaced by creeping darkness. The ceiling was melting. What was she talking about? "Then what are we doing here?" Shaking off the realization of why he's so cold now.
"The Shell was created at the end of the War. Fourteen years ago." Wells explained. "I snuck onto the island to try and stop whoever smuggled the Shell. Annihilation, here. But I failed. And well."
"But wait." Atsushi held is hands in a time out motion. "How do you know so much about the Shell?"
The woman gave him a guilty look. "Because I created it." At seeing Atsushi's shocked expression. She continued. "During the War. Europe sent in a group of Gifted called '*The Transcendents. Hugo, Goethe, and Shakespeare. All were extraordinary. But they caused the most casualties. At the time I was working for England's weapons force. When we discovered a singularity. Unlike any the world had seen this far."
Atsushi felt a shudder of horror. Singularities were horrible. It had been one that had a hand in Osamu's friend, Oda's death.
"So I locked it away. And hid it. In a briefcase. But it was stolen." Wells clenched her fists. "I've been working on tracking it down and destroying it safely for a while now. I had finally located it to Standard Island. And to the fifth basement level. But I was too late."
"But what are we going to do?" Atsushi asked. Trying not to freak out. He was going to die on this island. His family was all gone.
"We aren't going to do anything. I'm going to send you back in time using my Ability. "
What? "Your ability does what?!" Atsushi had never heard of time controlling or altering abilities. It had to have been as closely kept of a secret as Atsushi's was to anyone outside the Tripartite framework. It had to be a very valuable Ability. "How!?"
The camera's flash was getting brighter and brighter. "My ability can send you back 3,300 seconds. Or exactly 55 minutes. I can only do this safely once. But if needed. I will keep resetting it until you get the Shell or get rid of it. My camera is the catalyst. Something I trained for years. Do not waste this chance to save all of us. Please, kid.
"What about you?" She was putting all the power in Atsushi's hands. But not her own. What would she be doing.
Wells shook her head. "Don't worry about me. I'll keep resetting it. Just focus on finding it. And don't let anyone know what's going on. Or else the culprit could set it off earlier. And, Kid."
"Yes ma'am?" The light was almost blinding now. The room was getting warmer. Atsushi tried to shield his face. But the light was still blinding. Painfully so. And the din outside was growing deafening.
"I'm counting on you. We all are." She smiled as the blinding white light consumed them both. Her calm voice reaching him even over the eardrum shattering noise.
"I'll do my best!" He shouted. "I promise! You can trust me!"
"I know. I have my full faith in you. You've got this." Wells let go of her control over the room as the light consumed it.
And as the room finally succumbed to Annihilation– The room melting quickly and without fanfare– Atsushi was flying back in time. To almost an hour prior. His body in the now defunct timeline melting and burning away painlessly.
