Opening Observation
A recent slip in scree and thin compacted snow on the upper western approach to Mons Erebus exposed the roofline and partial southern wall of a small sealed structure of poured concrete, polymer panel, and metal bracing, inconsistent with current regional material practice and positioned above any habitation threshold.
1. Site Approach and Exposure Context
Access was conducted on foot over broken volcanic slope under intermittent ash drift, a sky the colour of old slag, and surface instability sufficient to delay instrument deployment twice in the final ascent. Residual ice persisted only in narrow shelves, wind-packed seams, and mineral-shadowed hollows. The old Antarctic masses no longer hold continuous fields. The mountain remains high, cold, and abrasive rather than glacial in the ancient sense.
The exposed structure lay half out of the slope as though the mountain had been carrying it and had recently decided to let part of it go. Three quarters of the volume remained buried. The visible roofline had buckled inward at the northeast corner. One polymer pane had crazed but not fully failed. The southern wall had sheared open enough to admit a servo-skull and later a line-cable. External dimensions, on provisional measurement, indicated a footprint too small for any sustained habitation cell, command shelter, or storage magazine of current or recent Terran military type.
The first inference was signal work.
That inference arose not from the shell but from the lead that brought us there. The Australasian liaison Galdai had passed along a fragment from displaced survivors of the Orioc eradication zones: old lights on the heights, they had said, and machine-voices that continued after the priests and the fires were gone. Such testimony is usually useless in the details and valuable in the outline.
Surface marking was poor. No heraldry. No ownership seal. No devotional inscription. The only surviving exterior text, partly exposed beneath mineral crust, consisted of degraded block glyphs in an archaic Terran hand no longer in common use. Fragmentary transliteration remains pending. Numerals were present in repeated clusters, likely inventory or station indexing.
2. Entry and Internal Condition
The breach in the southern wall was enlarged by cutter only where collapse load had already rendered the section unsalvageable. Internal atmosphere was thin, dry, dusted with concrete fines and old plastic decay, but absent the chemical signatures expected from weapons storage, fuel caching, or proscribed biological work. Instead: dry mineral, stale trapped air, and the faint hot-metal note of circuitry that had no business remaining active.
The chamber contained four principal elements:
- a central rack assembly fixed to the floor and rear wall
- a bank of archaic display units and manual interface surfaces
- a cable run entering through the northern wall and rising further upslope

The output was not random. That point matters. Long-surviving systems are often described by the untrained as haunted, erratic, or self-willed. This one was none of those things. The values advanced in ordered columns. Symbols repeated with internal consistency. The system was not broken. Certain bands refreshed at short intervals while others held for longer cycles before updating in grouped revision. Several variables tracked in relation to each other. The machine was still executing its function.
3. Instrument Survey and Functional Assessment
Initial machine dialogue was attempted through standard Mechanicum handshakes. No doctrinal interface was recognized. Secondary bypass into low-level signal readout produced partial success. The display output, while rendered in an antique notation scheme, was sufficiently regular to permit provisional mapping.
The site appears to be one node of a distributed atmospheric observation and archival network.
This conclusion rests on the following observed features:
- intake array geometry optimized for air sampling rather than transmission, extraction, or defense
- repeated pressure differentials across synchronized intervals
- thermal gradients recorded at multiple external reference points
- particulate density logs
- moisture or condensation trace values

The most revealing moment occurred during line stabilization. Once the intake assembly was cleared of packed volcanic grit and the reserve feed rerouted, one display shifted from static numerics to a sequence of dated comparative bands. The dates themselves could not yet be rendered into present standard without broader lexic recovery, but the spacing was unmistakable. This was not merely measurement. It was accumulation. The machine had been made to watch change across durations beyond the useful life of its maintainers.
There is no evidence that the station controlled weather, altered pressure systems, or served as part of a weapons grid. The function appears observational. Moderate confidence only.
Yet the scale of persistence demands notice. The makers assigned enduring value to the state of the air itself. They committed material, power discipline, storage design, and geographical reach to the proposition that atmospheric condition required continuous witness. To establish a network of such stations on elevated points across a dead continent and then construct each node to endure burial, abrasion, disuse, and civilisational breakage implies more than mundane curiosity.
4. Structural and Material Notes
The shelter shell is of mixed composition. Concrete core composition suggests ancient industrial fabrication rather than later improvised Terran aggregate. Polymer paneling has degraded but not failed where shielded from abrasive particulate exposure. Metal bracing shows corrosion consistent with long cold-dry endurance interrupted by mineral seep.
The filtration manifold contains layered media, much of it spent. Replacement schedules must once have existed. The fact that any reading survived beyond exhaustion of designed maintenance intervals suggests either extremely conservative overengineering or periodic autonomous compensation by the system. No mobile service unit was found. No attendant machine shrine or access crypt was present in the exposed volume.
Their age, temperature history, and potential fragility argue for controlled removal with better support. A second ascent team equipped for clean lift is recommended.
The upslope cable line is of greater interest than the hut itself. It exits north, buried in stone and old snowpack, then rises further toward the ridge. Ground resonance suggests additional anchored structures above the exposed node. If so, the present site may be one element in a vertical array, relay sequence, or distributed sensor field rather than a complete independent station.

A people who placed such devices on dead heights and engineered each node to outlast its maintainers assigned continuous witness a value equivalent to continuous occupation. In the present era, where so much of technical inheritance survives only as fractured rites and weaponized remnants, the existence of an enduring observational lattice on Terra itself suggests a civilization in which unattended machine vigilance had been normalized at planetary scale.
6. Recommendations
- Secure the Erebus node against further collapse and looting.
- Trace the upslope cable with penetrating augur and careful excavation.
- Survey adjacent Antarctic peaks for related emissions, exposed housings, or buried relay structures.
- Extract storage elements under controlled conditions.
- Assign lexic support for archaic display notation.
- Cross-compare station values against current local atmospheric readings to establish whether the system remains materially accurate or only procedurally active.
- Preserve the hut shell where possible. Context matters as much as recoverable hardware.
7. Closing Note
It would be easy to clear this installation as minor technical residue and move on.
Its significance lies not in grandeur of form but in continuity of function. A station built to outlast its maintainers and still executing its original task represents a class of technical inheritance this survey has not previously encountered on Terra. Later reconstruction phases preserved patterns of occupation more consistently than original technical function.

The climb was contemptible. Erebus has been cursed by better climbers than me and will be cursed by worse ones. The mountain shed grit into every seal and found the joins in my gloves twice. One of the servo-skulls lost stability in the crosswind and struck the slope hard enough to dent its casing. I considered leaving it where it fell, which was irritation and not analysis.
The structure did not look like anything worth the ascent. That is the first truth of it. A little hut. Concrete. Plastic. The kind of shell one clears, indexes, and forgets in favor of deeper vaults and larger machines. If the display had remained dark I would have written it up as a service shelter and gone lower before the light worsened.
When the screen woke, I expected the usual farce. Old systems often pretend to life by cycling a damage loop with enough order in it to tempt the inexperienced. This did not. The values changed because the air changed. Once that became clear, the chamber altered in emphasis.
A machine no larger than a poor shed had been left here to ask the same questions of the air for longer than most dynasties, cults, and cities had remained continuous. Pressure. Moisture. Particulates. Temperature. Nothing glorious. Nothing martial. Nothing that would earn immediate patronage from my superiors unless the node concealed some higher function still buried above it.
And yet it continued.
I stood still to watch one column revise. That is not mechanically necessary behavior. The numbers shifted within a band, paused, accepted a new input, and stored it without flourish. Terra has burned, drowned itself dry, butchered its own memory, and put on a thousand crowns of scrap and blood, and this little machine kept taking the measure of the sky.
Praise the Omnissiah, I thought, and then understood that I was lending Him a devotion He had not asked for in this case.
Perhaps that is unfair.
I do not know who built the network. I do not know whether they were admirable. I do not know whether they looked at the outputs with reverence, boredom, professional pride, or the common irritation of people obliged to maintain instruments in miserable places. The machine gives no answer to that. It only records that the air was thus, and then thus, and then thus again.
Bruce would probably laugh at me for this one if he were here. Not cruelly. He would look at the hut, look at the display, and say that some ancient weather clerk had done his work properly and then died, which would be vulgar and perhaps correct.
Still, I cannot dismiss it.
It survived by routine. By repetition. By being built well enough to continue a modest task in an immodest world. Fortresses remain fortresses. Monuments persist by bulk. Even wrecked weapons hold their threat-geometry. This is different.
The shell matters because scale matters. If the apparatus is removed from the hut and placed in a vault, someone later will mistake it for an object of ceremonial or elite significance. It was not elite. It was stationed in a cold box on a mountain to read the weather.
That may be the most human thing I have yet found on Terra.
I filed the storage recommendation and began the descent before the light failed entirely. The servo-skull with the dented casing kept pace without complaint. I did not look back at the hut.

Opening Observation
A plane of exposed lithic mass rose from the plateau at a constant angle without visible structural failure. Approach was conducted by ground vehicle across a shallow incline of compacted sediment exhibiting cohesion inconsistent with unconsolidated sand. The surface resisted displacement under load and retained heat beyond expected environmental thresholds.

Approach was completed without incident. The vehicle was brought to rest on a minor rise at the plateau margin. Residual system noise diminished gradually following shutdown, leaving ambient conditions notably static.
Observer remained in position to confirm initial sightline.
The exposed mass did not present as terrain. The plane held a fixed angle beyond erosion tolerance, the edge remaining linear under magnification. No curvature or natural break was observed.
Bruce, acting as local guide, stated that the site had historically been regarded as significant, though no consistent explanation of its purpose persisted in oral accounts. He added that references to the site tended to collapse into general statements of importance without retained detail. Guide Bruce identified several wall-mounted acoustic composites as "old decoration panels," though material analysis indicates deliberate sound-dampening function.

A lateral shift in position revealed a second mass, offset from the first by a distance too regular to be the result of collapse. 2. Surface Interaction and Material Assessment

Surface Ascent
A servitor unit was directed to ascend the primary structure.
Initial contact resulted in minor instability as accumulated particulate shifted under load. The unit corrected and continued ascent.
Close-range observation confirmed large-scale block segmentation, joint lines between structural elements, and surface abrasion formed under extended particulate exposure. Impact damage was present, inconsistent with erosion alone. Localised displacement was visible in upper sections.

The fragments instead traced a boundary that held at distance from the structures, enclosing space without contact.

4. Subsurface Survey

The structures are larger than the report suggests.
This is not a failure of measurement. The dimensions are accurate. It is a failure of the report's frame, which is built for objects that fit inside it. These do not. Macrostructures of unknown function sat in the document looking reasonable, which is how I know it is wrong. A thing of unknown function that has survived thirty millennia of civilisational overwriting is not described by noting that its function is unknown. That is the least interesting fact about it.
The joint lines are what held me. Not the scale — scale can be processed, filed, compared against other large things. The joint lines are cut to tolerances that the intervening civilisations did not match. Someone before the Strife, before the collapse, before whatever intermediary age produced the enclosure system now degrading in fragments around the plateau — someone earlier than all of that had done better work. That is not unusual in isolation. Technological regression is documented across every stratum. What is unusual is the margin. The later enclosure system, itself ancient, itself a ruin, is visibly cruder than what it was built to contain.
The makers of the enclosure knew this. They built around the structures rather than integrating them. That is not ignorance.
The joint lines held me for another reason. There is a particular quality to stonework cut at that tolerance — a flatness at the interface that reads almost like intention rather than craft, as though the maker understood that the joint itself would be read by someone who came later. Standing at the base of the primary structure with that flatness under my instruments, I understood that I had been in this position before. The pattern recognition is not the problem. Following it was.
The subsurface anomaly I have left in the report as a dimensional estimate and a confidence interval. That is accurate. What the report does not contain is that the signal, across multiple passes, maintained a consistent orientation. It aligns with nothing on the plateau currently visible or mapped — not the primary structures, not the enclosure. It aligns with something that is no longer there, or not yet found, or buried deep enough that my equipment returns only its edge.
I noted this. I did not include it.
The accretion pattern is the part I cannot set down cleanly. Urban material approaches the plateau boundary and thins. Compacted grit and structural residue, the kind that accumulates in continuous occupation, advances from multiple directions and stops short — not at a wall, not at a drop, but at a depth of roughly a metre of undifferentiated fill that simply does not continue past the boundary line. From successive phases of occupation, the same behaviour repeats: accumulation advances, slows, and does not complete. No consistent structural reason. No proscription markers. No instability in the substrate. The site was not avoided because it was dangerous. It was avoided because it was already there, and already itself, and the populations that built around it across three thousand years of layered occupation reached the same conclusion each time without coordinating it.
That is not a technical observation. I am aware of that.
Bruce watched the drone feed for a long time without speaking. When he did speak he said that the old accounts don't explain the site, they just point at it. I asked if that was common. He said it was common for things that had been there before the accounts began.
The last thing: I have not yet determined whether the network the Erebus station belongs to extended this far. The cable at Erebus rose upslope toward further nodes. The atmospheric record at a site this size, at this latitude, over this duration — if a station existed here, or near here, and if the network was as laterally distributed as the Erebus node suggests, then someone was watching this plateau continuously from before the Strife until the network went dark.
Watching it measure the air above it.

Opening Observation
A collapse breach beneath Transit Layer Sigma-Nine exposed a sealed chamber complex containing concentric inscription walls arranged around a central structure of lithic arch, commemorative obelisk, and dedicatory figure, with visible naming density exceeding any previously recorded non-administrative archive from this survey cycle.
1. Breach Context and Initial Access
The site was exposed during clearance operations following the crash of a cargo hauler into the lower superstructure of Delhi Hive Sector Nine. The vehicle had entered the hive wall at an oblique angle and shed structural mass across three transit decks before coming to rest against a load-bearing column cluster in the mid-level galleries.
The crash did not destroy the chamber directly.
The primary breach occurred eighteen hours later when cargo weight, wreckage shift, and secondary settling brought down a section of older support material beneath the transit deck. The collapse opened a vertical void into an unregistered cavity below the mapped hive layer. Initial survey parties classified the cavity as a possible concealed service artery or contraband command vault.
Mechanicum support was requested after return echoes exceeded expected void dimensions.
Access was made through a fractured service aperture along the northern edge of the breach. The approach path required descent through unstable transit debris, burned conduit bundles, and two partially collapsed habitation decks inserted into the older structural mass without clean integration.
The local air was hot, particulate-heavy, and metallic with recent fire.
At six metres below the transit deck the temperature dropped abruptly.
The void beneath retained a different atmosphere. Older. Drier. Less contaminated by the recent crash. Breach flow carried fine dust upward through the access cut in a slow continuous plume. The dust adhered to exposed lens surfaces and settled in inscription grooves once disturbed.
Initial augur penetration produced inconsistent results. The chamber geometry exceeded local scans but did not extend like a tunnel, pipe system, vault train, or defensive redoubt. No active systems responded to Mechanicum handshake.
The first visual return showed a curved black wall.
2. Outer Ring Survey
Entry team descended by line through the breach and established temporary bracing at the outer wall approach.
The wall stood approximately 1.8 metres high at the first accessible segment, rising slightly above head height for most unaugmented personnel. Surface material consisted of dark ceramic composite with later mineral accretion and damage from subsidence cracking. The upper edge had been worn smooth in several places, though no current traffic path existed within the sealed volume.
Beyond lumen range it curved away in both directions.
It was covered in names.

The enclosure above was not original to the central structure. 5. Central Structure
The ring corridors opened into the original nucleus without warning.
After six passages of fifteen to twenty metres each, the space widened. The central complex occupied the full original 650-metre diameter — open civic ground relative to the compression of the approach. The effect was immediate and spatial, not architectural. The rings had narrowed attention. The centre released it.
Then the central structures became visible, and the release inverted.

These labels are provisional. Several later inscription bands include references that may correspond to lunar theatre casualties, Martian transit losses, orbital defence actions, atmospheric bombardments, civic defence formations, and unidentified machine-hostile incidents. Lexic support is required before any confidence can be assigned.
Material variation suggests the memorial expanded over thousands of years before final sealing and loss. It did not remain unchanged. It was repaired, extended, enclosed, and reinscribed repeatedly.
In several locations older panels were preserved behind transparent protective overlays now opaque with age. In others, damaged names had been copied immediately below the original surface. One mid-ring section preserved a shattered panel fragment within a later wall, its broken edge framed rather than trimmed.

Where the northwest Europa structure survives primarily as name-register fragments, the Delhi site preserves spatial development. It records not only the initial memorial act but repeated attempts to continue that act under changing civilisational conditions.
The structure therefore provides evidence for a persistent human memorial grammar spanning separated regions, languages, and political forms.
Guide Galdai's immediate recognition supports this interpretation. His own cultural framework appears to retain comparable memorial practices from Australasian municipal traditions, though he lacks specific knowledge of this site. Recognition without data is not equivalent to error.

The Delhi site contains no recoverable functional technology of immediate strategic value.
Its significance lies in persistence of memorial behaviour across discontinuous civilisational periods. The original complex appears to have begun as a martial memorial. Subsequent societies expanded it repeatedly by constructing additional inscription walls around it rather than replacing earlier records.
The result is a concentric inscription system in which each expansion phase preserved rather than replaced the preceding casualty record.

The outer wall looked like an archive until Bruce touched it.
I had already begun sorting the inscription pattern into administrative categories. Registry. Muster. Census. Labour allocation. Territorial obligation.
He touched it with the back of his fingers and said memorial.
I asked for clarification because that is correct procedure.
He said war dead.
We entered through the latest wall first. That matters. The outer ring was the crudest, the most compressed, the least elegant in execution. Names forced into margins. Names cut through repaired patches. Names placed around support intrusions where later builders had treated the wall as obstacle, then corrected themselves enough not to erase it entirely.
A bad piece of work, taken technically.
The next wall inward was older and better made. The wall after that better again. We walked backward through improving technique and worsening implications.
They had run out of room more than once.
There is no more precise way to state it.
A people built a memorial for their dead. Later people filled it. Later people added another wall. Later people filled that too. The pattern repeated until the original structure became the centre of a larger thing it had not been designed to contain.
Every expansion preserved the earlier names.
It would have been simpler to plane the old surfaces smooth and reuse them. Simpler to replace the arch. Simpler to declare the earlier dead outside the current order of memory. Simpler to retain only the victorious, the useful, the doctrinally aligned.
They did not do that.
The oldest names were protected most carefully.
This may indicate antiquarian reverence, or civic inheritance, or that the memorial had acquired protection beyond its original function. None of those interpretations explain why later custodians copied broken names from damaged panels instead of discarding them.
Bruce said most towns had one.
He did not mean this structure. He meant the category. He meant the behaviour.

The central arch is smaller than it should be.
That statement will not survive in a formal report because it is nonsense. Its dimensions are measurable. It is large enough for its original period and modest beside the surrounding hive. The problem is not measurement. The problem is expectation. After the rings, after the millions of names, the centre ought to be vast.
It is not.
The corridors had narrowed everything — attention, sound, the space between one wall and the next. Then the nucleus opened and the three structures stood in it, and they were stone, weathered by open air that no longer exists above them, with four dead urns on a platform where fire used to be kept.
Used to be kept.
The residue layers show maintenance across intervals too long to be ceremonial novelty. Someone supplied fuel. Someone cleaned the burners. Someone relit them after failure. Someone changed the supply lines when the original feed ran dry. Someone did this after the first makers were gone.
The fire stopped eventually. The names remained.
I found myself checking the oldest inscription bands twice. The grouping logic is martial but not caste-based. Rank appears, but not as exclusion. Unit appears, but not purity. There are differences among the dead, but the structure does not appear interested in the categories I expected it to preserve.
The Imperium does this.
That was my first stabilising thought.
The Imperium raises walls of names. The Imperium preserves sacrifice. The Imperium gives form to human loss and directs it toward continuity. This structure therefore anticipates the truth now made complete.
That was the formulation available to me.
It failed under the fourth ring.
Not because the statement is false. Because it is insufficient.
The Delhi complex does not anticipate us. It precedes us. Then it repeats itself through systems that had no knowledge of us, no loyalty to us, no need of us to produce the same act.
The pattern is older than the Imperium.
I do not like the sentence. I have written it three times and removed it twice.
A single ancient memorial can be honoured as precursor. Multiple expansions across multiple civilisations become evidence of recurrence. The distinction matters. One may be absorbed. The other resists absorption.
The machine cult teaches continuity through preservation of function. The Imperial Truth teaches unity through correct ordering of human purpose. The Delhi site shows a third thing: continuity through repeated human refusal to let names vanish, even when the ordering systems around those names fail.
I am not certain what doctrine does with that.
Perhaps it files it. Perhaps that is what I am doing.
When the imaging servitor reached the innermost face, dust had settled into the name cuts. I cleared one line with a soft brush to confirm depth. The dust came away reluctantly. The groove beneath remained sharp enough to catch the bristle tips.
The name was not readable to me.
It had been readable to someone.
That has to be enough for the report.
Bruce removed his gloves at the base of the arch. I noted it because it was unsafe. Stone dust, unknown residues, possible chemical contaminants. He knew all this because I had said all this. The arch was smaller than the rings had promised. He touched the stone anyway.
Still here, he said.

Survey Control will ask whether there is anything useful beneath the central plinth.
There may be. Ground resonance is irregular in two quadrants. Subsurface voiding cannot be excluded. A sealed foundation deposit is possible. So is a drainage cavity. So is nothing.

It is also the first time in this survey cycle that I have delayed access to a possible sealed substructure because the material above it seemed more important than whatever might lie below.
I shall need a better reason if challenged.

Local tradition transmitted through Guide Bruce Galdai identified the site by several related forms: Habic, Habicht, Habichsburg, Habichtsburg. Translation confidence remains moderate. The dominant sense appears to be hawk-fortress or hawk-castle. No current local authority retains a formal explanation for the name. The veteran identified himself only as the Seneschal.

He looked at Guide Galdai first, then at me, then at the rest of the survey party without comment. He carried a heavy blade at his side, a sealed drinking vessel in his left hand, and a pistol at his hip of archaic pattern. His right pauldron emitted a slow hydraulic slip under load, audible at three metres. Breathing remained stable but laboured after movement. Augur readings indicated significant metabolic irregularity.
He did not ask for authorization.
"Mechanicum," he said.
He considered this for approximately six seconds.
"Basement, then."

He turned toward the inner stair.

2. Upper Fortress Survey
The fortress occupies a constructed stone platform integrated into the bedrock of the hill. Upper walls retain medieval and later reconstruction signatures beneath subsequent reinforcement phases. He does not know the fortress's name.
Not properly.
Habicht, he said when I asked. Then Habic. Then the hawk place. Then the old keep. The sounds were interchangeable to him because the function had remained after the word had thinned. He knew the stair. He knew which chamber smoked in crosswind. He knew which winter door swelled and which one would open if kicked at the hinge. He knew there was a lower vault.
He did not know why it mattered.
Perhaps that is too strong. Perhaps he knew exactly why it mattered and lacked my interest in saying it.
The hawk on his breastplate is not Imperial. It may not even be military. The lines have been cut and recut through older damage, then painted, then worn down again. I asked whether the emblem belonged to a formation.
He looked at it as if I had asked whether his hand belonged to one.
"Seemed right," he said.
That was all.
The vault contents are easier to classify than they are to understand.

This is not strange. The Imperium does the same with seals, warrants, oaths, tithe marks, throne-gelt, passage tablets, labour credits, purity certificates, and signatures from men whose bodies are dust before the document reaches its destination.
What unsettled me was not the category.

Shelf after shelf of identical promise. Packet after packet. A mountain chamber filled with permission to claim value from a world that no longer existed. Someone placed it there carefully. Someone closed the door. Someone expected either to return or to be represented by others who would know how to open it and what the contents meant.

I asked for clarification.
He looked along the shelves.
"Power in the stone. Door on it. Men outside with blades. Men inside counting."
He unstopped the drinking vessel and drank without looking away from the rows.
"Always makes sense."
That is not a technical explanation. It may be the cleanest interpretation available.

The person who sealed this chamber understood that systemic collapse was possible. They brought money, weapons, and records. They prepared across categories. The cache-builder's hierarchy of value was wrong about what would last.
At Erebus, a machine kept measuring air after the world stopped caring about the measurement. At Giza, later peoples built around older stone they could neither explain nor surpass. At Delhi, names outlived the states that carved them. At Sanaz, war concrete became foundation, factory, refuge, tomb. At Habichtsburg, money outlived value, stone outlived dynasty, and a soldier outlived the war that justified him until the new order remembered to collect its remnants.
I have begun to mistrust preservation. Not the discipline. The assumption beneath it.

A courier drone came at dusk, low over the western ridge, its engine note broken by the wind. The Seneschal shot it down with the archaic pistol before anyone in the courtyard could identify it properly. The drone struck the inner wall and fell into the snow between two repair piles.
No one moved for three seconds.
Then he crossed the court, opened the casing with his knife, and removed the message cylinder intact.
The seal was Imperial.
He handed it to me because the script was small.
Recall to central muster. Immediate compliance. Route designation attached. No commendation. No replacement garrison. No disposition note for the fortress. No medical provision. No destination beyond the first transit point.
I read it twice.
He watched my face rather than the paper.
"Bad?" he asked.
"It is clear," I said.
He took the order back, folded it once, then once again, and placed it inside his breastplate behind the hawk.
"Makes sense," he said.
I do not think he meant the vault.
Bruce said nothing.
The official report recommends recording the Seneschal's testimony before reassignment. This is defensible. It is also inadequate. The order did not name punishment. It did not need to. Administrative finality has its own temperature. I have seen it in clearance notices, salvage denials, demolition authorisations, and casualty schedules. The document did not threaten him. It removed the conditions under which his continued existence had been accidentally tolerated.
A fortress can keep an obsolete soldier alive by giving him a door to guard.
An order can take even that.
The Seneschal left before morning.
He did not take anything from the vault. He took his blade, his pistol, the drinking vessel, and a cloak too small for him at the shoulders. At the gate he stopped, turned back, and looked up at the hawk carved into the weathered stone above the arch.
I thought he might ask what it meant.

He spat into the snow, adjusted the packet inside his armour with two fingers, and began walking down the road before the crawler engines had warmed.

She was baseline human, late middle years. The throat apparatus she wore was old, repaired repeatedly, and functional; her hair bound under a grey covering marked with a single black line. She carried a key ring of physical metal, a coded access slate, and a narrow cold-lumen staff.
She did not bow.
"Magos Var," she said. "You come after the mountain."

"The hawk place."
The Habichtsburg designation had reached the basin before the survey detachment.
Rkavs did not ask about the Seneschal. She looked once at the recall seal attached to the transit case and then looked away. The gesture was not ignorance. It was refusal to accept responsibility for information outside her charge.

Rkavs said, "No."

Rkavs touched none of them.
One attendant began the chant under his breath during pressure equalisation. Rkavs stopped him with a glance. The rule appears to be private, not performative before outsiders.
3. Chamber Thirty-Two
Chamber Thirty-Two was excavated into reinforced substrate rather than natural limestone. Surface irregularities are deliberate. Ceiling curvature, wall modulation, and narrowing points reproduce earlier cave forms according to a recorded lineage sequence inscribed at the entrance:

Chamber Thirty-Two is not a naive replica. It preserves its own making.

Pigment analysis indicates the repaired section had been reconstructed from an older parent copy after the local surface suffered water damage. 4. Parentage System
The chamber lineage system is the most significant feature of the site.

I preferred the first arrangement. This is not a defensible professional statement, but it is true. A sealed system that yields to method confirms the discipline. Solvent, torque, heat cycling, pressure adjustment, patience. The wheel moves. The tooth catches. The lever drops. A door obeys.
The First Mouth did not obey.
Rkavs did not obstruct me with force. That would have been simpler. Force can be measured, overruled, escalated, documented. She gave me rules instead, and the worse thing is that the rules were good.
No bare breath.
No warm light.
No hand against wall.
No chamber without parent.
No First Mouth for curiosity.
I wrote them down first as local ritual, then as access protocol, then as site-preservation logic. The categories changed as the instruments agreed with her.
The wall had scars at hand height where older visitors had touched it. Not the First wall. Chamber Thirty-Two. A copy. The contamination bands stopped almost exactly where the later exclusion line began. The pigments above that line remained cleaner. Not pure. Cleaner. Enough to prove the rule had done work.
Rkavs watched me read the data.

I disliked that more than correction.
The copies are not what I first meant the word to hold.

Every wall names its parent.
That phrase appeared first in current script. Later, older versions emerged beneath it. The child-wall names the mother-wall. Derivative chamber without declared source is unlawful. A copy that hides its parent is theft.
The same anxiety, carrying forward through different languages.
Not fear of copying. Fear of false descent.
That distinction matters.
At Habichtsburg, the polymer notes were promises without a world to honour them. At Montignac, each copy is a promise that admits who made it possible. This appears to make the promise stronger rather than weaker.

The lower galleries were more damaged than the report states. Not materially. The report covers the material damage adequately. The damage is conceptual and therefore not reportable without sounding like one of the hill attendants.

The philosophical contamination is evident. Some corrupted remnant of an ancient cave parable has fused with conservation doctrine. In the older form, if I reconstruct it correctly from fragments, shadow deceived and truth lay outside. Here the hill has inverted the lesson. The one who rushes toward the source is the fool. The one who accepts the copy sees rightly because the source survives being unseen.
This should irritate me more than it does.
The Mechanicum does not lack copy doctrine. We preserve patterns. We transmit designs. We venerate correct replication. We understand that a pattern may outlast its first housing. Yet our hunger is always toward the source: first print, first template, intact machine, uncorrupted standard.
The hill says: the First keeps the dark.
It says: the copy keeps the people.
Rkavs has seen the First once.
She did not say it proudly. She said it the way a person states a fact they have arranged their entire practice around, without requiring it to mean more than it does.
Once.
Before appointment.
To learn what the eye must not take.
A ridiculous sentence. A precise sentence. Both.
I kept thinking of the Seneschal walking down from Habichtsburg with the recall order behind the hawk on his breastplate. He knew the stairs, the swollen doors, the quiet corridor. He did not know the dynasty. Rkavs knows the rule, the line, the seam, the forbidden mouth. She may not know the full science that made her office necessary. She does not need to know it for the office to work.
We say knowledge preserves function. The hill says function may preserve knowledge in pieces until someone capable of reading the pieces arrives. Or until no one arrives. Or until arrival itself becomes the danger.
I requested the First Mouth three times.
The first refusal was procedural.
The second was technical.
The third was personal, though Rkavs did not change her wording.
"No First Mouth for curiosity," she said.

"Then ask a survey question."

1. Surface Approach and Basin Geometry
Crawler approach from the Leuteria railhead crossed approximately forty-six kilometres of exposed estuary floor before reaching the excavation perimeter.
The basin does not read as a landscape. It reads as a record. Crater sequences along the northern bank mark artillery patterns from multiple distinct engagement periods, the later impacts cutting through the earlier ones, the whole sequence now compressed beneath wind-worked dust and mineral crust into something that resembles geology. It is not geology. The substrate shifts under crawler weight in ways that indicate subsurface voids, collapsed drainage, and buried structural mass at irregular intervals. The basin still preserves the dimensions of the lost river system. The craters preserve the dimensions of the argument that ended it.
The structure predates the argument. That much is certain. The craters came later, and later again, and later again after that. 5. Acoustic Note

At low occupancy, reverberation patterns appeared inefficient and inconsistent despite surviving acoustic composite remnants within the wall sections.
However, once chamber occupancy exceeded approximately six individuals, measured acoustic performance improved substantially.
Observed changes included:

- improved conversational intelligibility

No active acoustic technology was identified.
The chamber proportions themselves appear responsible.

No direct Mechanicum equivalent currently established.
The structure appears to have retained significance across multiple reconstruction phases despite lacking strategic value, religious centrality, administrative function, or industrial necessity.
Occupation continuity appears to have persisted even during periods where portions of the structure's technical systems were no longer fully operational.
Later reconstruction phases prioritized restoration of congregation space over restoration of original infrastructure.
Function remains unclassified under current typological frameworks.
7. Classification and Recommendations
The Bathas structure represents a preserved example of low-status communal architecture dating to late pre-Unification or early Old Night occupation layers within the Australasia basin system of PanPacifica.
Preservation quality within the lower chamber exceeds regional expectations due to rapid clay sealing and repeated sediment accumulation.
One recovered polymer token displayed radial eight-point geometry surrounding a cranial motif. Pattern similarity to prohibited symbolic structures triggered temporary archive review escalation.

Opening Observation
The warehouse contained approximately forty-three thousand representations of things its owners neither feared nor believed in.
This conclusion required eleven days to reach.
1. Exposure Context
The site emerged during controlled removal of late-collapse urban overburden above the former Nara metropolitan district. Survey mapping of the district had flagged anomalous subsurface density readings across a narrow commercial stratum: material echo, sealed cavity geometry, no sign of vault construction. The pattern suggested a large building that had been compressed rather than cleared — floors pancaking under successive construction weight without the lower chambers ever being stripped.
Preservation conditions proved unusual. The collapse had been rapid enough to prevent inventory removal. Subsequent subsidence had isolated the lower chambers from groundwater ingress and later disturbance. The air, when we broke through, had a quality I have encountered only once before, in the lower vault at Habichtsburg: the particular flatness of atmosphere that has had thirty thousand years to finish settling.
The structure was initially classified as a wholesale storage facility serving the surrounding commercial district.
This proved correct.
2. First Entry
The breach team opened a lateral access point through the eastern wall at approximately 0.8 metres elevation above the original floor level. The structural survey had identified this as the safest entry point. It was also the most conservative possible introduction to the interior.
The main chamber extended beyond the reach of the initial lighting array. The ceiling survived at a consistent height, which is unusual at this stratum; the building's upper floors had collapsed inward along the perimeter walls rather than across the central span, leaving a long interior corridor largely intact. Shelving units of metal construction ran the full length on both sides, floor to near-ceiling, most still loaded. The floor was covered in a uniform layer of dry particulate, the compressed residue of packaging materials and ceiling debris, undisturbed enough to retain impression marks from the last foot-traffic: shallow, long-since-cold, pointing toward the eastern wall in one direction only.
The first inventory visible from the entry point consisted of ceramic vessels, stacked in grouped configurations with degraded packaging material still partially intact around them. This seemed, briefly, to be a straightforward ceramic deposit — a commercial wholesaler, plausible at this stratum, potentially useful for typological comparison with the existing ceramic survey data.
That assessment survived approximately forty seconds of advance into the chamber.
The ceramic vessels had faces.
Faces. Specifically: broad, flattened faces with protruding curved horns, deep-set eye apertures filled with painted pigment still partially intact after thirty millennia of sealed storage, and a pronounced bared dentition that the manufacturing process had taken some care to render accurately. The expression was consistent across the production run.
Magos Sekt, who had joined the entry team as hazard observer, said nothing for a moment.
Then he said: "How many."
I told him.
He said: "Confirm statement."
I confirmed it.
He said: "How are they packaged."
I told him.
He did not say anything for some time after that.
3. Inventory Expansion
Excavation of the main chamber and subsequent subsidiary chambers produced an inventory that resisted every classification framework attempted during the first three days.
The horned ceramic vessels were, it emerged, one of the more straightforward categories.
Additional inventory included the following, recorded in order of encounter:
Ceramic drinking vessels aside, the first subsidiary chamber contained masks. The chamber was stacked floor to ceiling on three walls with mask inventory in degraded packaging, each unit a form designed to cover a human face, with eye and breathing apertures. The material was predominantly polymer composite. The imagery covered a wide typological range. A substantial proportion depicted vulpine entities — elongated muzzle, acute triangular ear geometry, a visual vocabulary that appeared highly standardised across the production run, suggesting that the vulpine entity in question was a known referent, not an invented one. Other masks depicted avian-human hybrid forms, with pronounced beak-like nasal extensions, pronounced supraorbital ridges, and in some variants partial wing-attachment points at the temple. A third category depicted human faces in states of extreme distress or alteration: exaggerated orbital sockets, horn protrusions, dentition displaced from normal configuration.
The second subsidiary chamber contained figurines.
The figurines presented several distinct entity types, the most numerically dominant being a small predatory mammal — feliform, domesticated in scale, depicted with one forelimb raised in a summoning gesture. Cross-referencing with prior survey data confirmed that the beckoning feline figurine had been a near-ubiquitous presence across every commercial and domestic context yet examined in the Nipponese uplift zone. Whatever the gesture signified, the civilisation had wanted it in large numbers and in every room.
Paired guardian entities occupied the third subsidiary chamber: heavy ceramic, large, leonine in general morphology, positioned in facing pairs, each pair consisting of one figure with its oral cavity open and one with its oral cavity closed. Every guardian set retrieved from this chamber was matched in this way. The significance of the binary designation — open, closed; or perhaps speaking, silent; or perhaps something else entirely — is not recoverable from the physical evidence. The figures are noted here because they recur consistently at what appear to be threshold locations across the regional survey, which is consistent with a guardian function, and because the oral cavity distinction suggests that the guardian entity was understood to possess two complementary states rather than a single posture.
The fourth subsidiary chamber contained sealed packets.
The packets were small — most could be held comfortably in a closed hand — constructed of textile and polymer, and bound with identifying cord in a colour range that, analysis suggested, corresponded to categorical distinctions in function. They had never been opened. The sealing appeared deliberate and the integrity of the seal appeared to be a feature of the object rather than a consequence of storage conditions: the packets had been manufactured to remain closed. Contents analysis by non-invasive imaging revealed small folded paper inserts with text, and in some cases additional small objects of various materials.
Inventory records describe these as sealed protective or beneficent charms, individually assigned by category: safe passage, successful outcome, recovery from illness, protection in conflict, luck in commercial activity, success in examination. The intent of each packet was declared on the outer binding.
Magos Sekt requested a secondary inventory count of this chamber.
I provided one.
He requested a containment assessment for the entire chamber.
I noted that the objects were textile and polymer packets containing paper, and that this did not meet the standard threshold for containment protocols.
He noted that each packet was described as a probability-modification instrument.
I noted that this was a characterisation derived from inferential translation of the outer binding text, not an engineering specification.
He noted that his role was hazard assessment, not engineering specification.
The containment assessment was not initiated. The characterisation remains on record.
4. Restricted Symbol Review
The suspension order originated in Chamber Seven.
Chamber Seven was reached on the third day of excavation, following clearance of two further subsidiary chambers containing wooden votive plaques — rectangular panels with handwritten text on one face, the text consisting in all recovered examples of appeals addressed to unspecified receiving entities, requesting specific outcomes: examination success, recovery from illness, safe delivery in childbirth, the return of absent persons. The plaques had been produced in large numbers and appeared designed to be written upon by the purchaser rather than pre-inscribed. A writing surface sold blank, for the purpose of addressing invisible powers.
Chamber Seven contained the highest concentration of iconic material in the warehouse.
The ceramic horned vessels from the first chamber were present in substantial quantity. The vulpine masks from the subsidiary chamber were present. The avian-human hybrid masks were present. The third mask type — severe orbital distortion, displaced dentition, surface texture suggesting dermal alteration — was present in numbers exceeding any other chamber. Additionally present: full-body figurative ceramics of a horned anthropomorphic entity type, consistent across the production run, in poses suggesting active movement rather than static display; sets of miniature architectural models identifiable as shrine structures; and quantities of the paired guardian entities in a smaller scale variant apparently intended for domestic rather than threshold placement.
Total iconic unit count across Chamber Seven: in excess of eight thousand five hundred units.
Iconographic cross-referencing against known empyrical hazard typologies produced the following flags: non-human entity representation (multiple categories), ritual concealment apparatus (the masks), entity invitation or summoning gesture (the beckoning feline, present here in quantity), threshold guardian entities, sealed probability-modification instruments, and appeal documents addressed to unspecified non-human receiving entities.
I halted excavation, withdrew all personnel to beyond the designated containment perimeter, and transmitted to Survey Control.
The resulting communications are attached as Appendix IV.

He asked how many commercial contexts the feline figure had been recovered from across the regional survey.
I consulted the running total.
He absorbed this.
"Every one?" he said.
"Every commercial context recovered to date," I confirmed.
He looked at the feline figure for some time.
"A civilisation-wide summoning gesture," he said.
"That is one characterisation," I said.
"What is yours?"
I told him I did not yet have one.
5. Clearance and Attached Observer
Survey Control authorised resumption under enhanced observation protocols on the sixth day. Magos-Liturgist Harun Sekt remained assigned throughout the subsequent excavation. His role was containment assessment, symbolic hazard review, and empyrical emission monitoring.
The ritual verification of symbolic goods required by his protocols was applied to thirty-seven crates before Magos Sekt was satisfied that no active contamination signature was present.
I counted the crates.
He disputes the number.
He places it at thirty-four.
The discrepancy may be explained by the three crates that were opened, assessed, resealed, and reopened at his request after he had reviewed the imagery in an adjacent chamber and wished to confirm that the first assessment held. Whether these constitute three crates or six assessments is a definitional question I have declined to resolve in either direction.
One further category requires mention in this section, because it does not appear elsewhere in the report.
Chamber Nine contained approximately three hundred ceramic figurines of a further entity type: rotund anthropomorphic form, with broad facial features, a distinctive ornamental hat, and anatomical characteristics that I will not describe in the report body on the grounds that any description would require a level of biological specificity that the report format does not support and that Magos Sekt has formally requested be documented in a restricted appendix.
Appendix VII has been filed separately under restricted access.
Bruce, who accompanied the survey team into Chamber Nine, was unable to assist with classification. He was also unable to speak for approximately four minutes. I asked him to explain what was amusing. He looked at the figurines again and then at me and then away.
"I'll explain later," he said.
He has not explained later.

6. Distribution Analysis
The breakthrough in interpretation came not from iconographic analysis but from logistics.
Once the full inventory was assembled, a consistent pattern emerged across every major product category: the objects shared a physical profile that had nothing to do with their symbolic content. They were lightweight. Portable. Constructed to survive repeated handling and transport. Most would fit inside a standard personal carry container. Very few exceeded the mass a single individual could comfortably carry for an extended period. They had been manufactured in large numbers, in near-identical variants, with only minor regional and aesthetic variation between production runs.
This physical profile is not characteristic of devotional infrastructure. They had been engineered to leave.
The warehouse had not served a local population. It had served people who came from elsewhere, acquired objects, and departed carrying them.
The distribution network implied by the inventory — the transit packaging, the range of near-identical variants, the evident high turnover rate suggested by the quantity of stock — is consistent with a substantial visitor population. This district attracted people from outside the immediate locale. Those people wanted objects with no functional parallel in contemporary Mechanicum supply infrastructure — nothing that built, repaired, fed, or defended.
They wanted objects that referred to a place.
The physical item was a carrier for a relationship between a person and a location they had visited, a location they wished to remember, a location they apparently wished to demonstrate some connection to upon returning to wherever they had come from. The warehouse had manufactured that carrier function at scale, in dozens of entity types and symbolic registers, across every price point the packaging variations suggest.
What the visitor economy was that sustained this site, and why people would travel to this district, and what the district offered that generated sufficient traffic to require a wholesale distribution facility of this scale, cannot be reconstructed from the warehouse inventory alone. The district's surface archaeology has not been fully characterised. The answer may be in what surrounded this building rather than in the building itself.
7. Mechanical Survivors
Two surviving mechanical categories warrant brief documentation before the interpretive section.
The first consists of feliform figurines, present across multiple chambers, equipped with internal mechanical movement systems powered by integrated solar collection surfaces. The power cells had discharged completely during the sealed period. On exposure to survey lighting, the units began slowly reactivating, increasing as light intensity increased.
The initial behaviour was asynchronous. Individual figures began moving at different rates as charge accumulated unevenly across the chamber, the nearest units to the light source activating first, outlying units following as illumination levels increased. For several minutes the chamber contained a population of small feliform figures waving at different speeds and in no discernible coordination. The air in the chamber, which had been as flat and settled as the air in any sealed space we had entered, began to move: the faint accumulated displacement of several hundred small mechanisms each completing their own cycle, not yet aligned, a confused and private stirring that raised nothing heavier than particulate.
As charge equalised across the units, the movement rates converged.
By the time full survey lighting was established, almost every figure in the chamber was executing the same gesture at the same interval. The air moved in a single rhythm. The particulate that had lifted in the first minutes of asynchronous activation was now carried in one direction and then the other, evenly, at the interval the figures had settled on. Exceptions were those units that on random sample appeared to have damaged charging or discharging capacity.
The synchronisation has no apparent mechanism. The units are independently powered. No communication system has been identified. The convergence appears to be a product of identical charge states reached under identical light conditions producing identical cycle rates in identical mechanisms.
The second consists of weighted anthropomorphic figurines designed to return to upright position when displaced. The weight distribution and base geometry had been engineered to resist being laid down. Every attempt to leave one on its side resulted in the figure returning to standing. They had been manufactured in very large numbers.
Both categories describe objects that persist in activity regardless of whether anyone is watching.
8. Closing Note
The Nara Folkloric Deposit Site is hereby reclassified as a wholesale distribution centre for symbolic, folkloric, commemorative, and identity-associated goods. The empyrical hazard review has been formally closed following Magos Sekt's assessment. No active contamination signature was identified. No evidence of cult activity was found.
The entity iconography throughout the inventory appears to represent folkloric and narrative traditions rather than devotional or empyrical practice. It is also, on the evidence of this site, a distinction the original population understood very clearly and maintained with considerable commercial sophistication.
They sold representations of entities they did not believe were real, to people who knew those entities were not real, in quantities that suggest this transaction was entirely comfortable on both sides for a very long time.
Survey Control has been informed that no STC-relevant material was recovered. No functional machine architecture. No fabrication system. No Dark Age technology.

The delay is attributable to Magos Sekt's protocols, and to the time I spent on the evening of the ninth day sitting on a crate in the main chamber corridor after the survey team had returned to the transit camp, looking at the shelving, trying to work out what I was looking at.
I did not understand the warehouse.
This is not unusual. I often do not understand sites initially. I did not understand Habichtsburg until the Seneschal said "makes sense" and left me alone with a vault full of identical paper currency. I did not understand Erebus until a number changed and I stood and watched it change. Understanding is usually delayed. Understanding is the thing that arrives after all other work is completed, often at an inconvenient moment, often quietly enough that one is not initially certain it has arrived at all.
The warehouse did not resolve in the usual way.
The first problem was the entities.
The vulpine masks: a shape-changing non-human entity represented in facial form, designed for temporary human integration, produced at industrial scale. The avian-human hybrid masks: a winged entity of mountain or high-place association, again in facial form, again for human integration, again at scale. The third mask type, which I have described in the report with restraint and which Magos Sekt photographed with the expression of a man adding to a private collection of things that will concern him until retirement, depicted an entity that by the standards of every classification system this survey uses should not appear on ceramic drinking vessels available for domestic purchase. The horns alone would have been sufficient. The expression was gratuitous. That eight thousand five hundred units of these objects occupied a single chamber and had been packaged in groups of eight for convenient distribution was the kind of fact one files and continues to think about for longer than is professionally necessary.
The second problem was the beckoning feline.
I had encountered the beckoning feline figure in twenty-three prior survey contexts before arriving at Nara. I had noted it as a regional decorative motif with possible commercial association. At Nara I learned that it was present in every commercial context yet recovered from the Nipponese uplift zone survey. I spent an evening with the cross-reference data confirming this.
Every shop. Every food preparation facility. Every commercial exchange point. Every transit context. The same small predatory mammal, the same raised forelimb, the same gesture.
The gesture is a summoning gesture. I classified it as a summoning gesture in the report and I stand by that classification. What it was summoning is — I have reviewed the data — apparently customers.
The civilisation had placed a summoning figure in every location where commerce occurred.
The figures in the warehouse had not been summoning anything. They had been waiting in the dark, discharged, for thirty thousand years, for someone to bring enough light.
The third problem was Magos Sekt.
His protocols exist because the mistakes they prevent are worse than the delays they cause, and I have worked in enough compromised sites to know that the capacity to recognise a real threat is worth the cost of occasionally applying the protocol to ceramic mugs. I do not dispute his methodology.
I counted thirty-seven crates.
He counted thirty-four.
I have reviewed my count three times and I am confident in thirty-seven. The three-crate discrepancy is explained by the reopened crates, which he assessed, resealed, and reassessed, and which I believe should be counted as assessed on each occasion of assessment. He believes they should be counted as assessed on the first occasion only, subsequent assessments being procedurally part of the original assessment. It is also the disagreement one has after nine days in a warehouse full of entities one has been unable to classify as harmless until the ninth day.
He had a conversation with Bruce about Mars and superstition.
Bruce said what he said. Magos Sekt heard it. The subsequent discussion lasted forty minutes. I did not mediate. I was occupied with the distribution analysis and would not have been an effective mediator in any case, since Bruce was not incorrect and Magos Sekt was not entirely wrong either.
The fourth problem was the sealed packets.
I held one of the omamori — this is the local term recovered from partial text analysis — for approximately three minutes on the eighth day while conducting the inventory count.
I did not open it.
The seal is a feature of the object. To open it would be to destroy what it was made to be.
I am aware that this reasoning does not apply to a survey instrument conducting an archaeological inventory. The Mechanicum's mandate includes destructive analysis where necessary. The contents are paper and, per non-invasive imaging, a small secondary object of indeterminate material. The information recoverable from the contents would be of genuine value to the classification work.
I did not open it.
The packet declared itself on the outside. Safe travel. This was its entire stated purpose: to travel with its bearer and keep them from harm. To open it is to make it something else. To leave it sealed is to let it remain, for thirty thousand years longer than its maker could have imagined, what it was made to be.
I put the packet back in the inventory tray.
I put it down carefully. Squarely. Pointing the right way.
I am noting that here as well.
On the final evening, after the survey team had departed and before my own departure, I found Bruce at the far end of the main chamber corridor, where the shelving ran out and the rear wall was visible, looking at a row of beckoning felines that were still in motion on a shelf at shoulder height.
I said: "I don't have a classification that fits this."
He looked at the felines. The forelimbs moved. The solar collectors were still pulling trace light from the survey lamps.
"People came here," he said. "Bought things to take home. To remember the place."
I waited for the rest.
There was no rest.
"That's the classification?" I said.
"That's what happened," he said.
I told him that was not a classification, it was a description of behaviour.
He looked at the felines again.
