“BONES!”
Phaser blasts and pterodactyls brushed past Jim as he headed back along his tracks, but he didn’t stop. His heart grew heavier with every second that passed without finding anything.
“Captain! Yer signal’s breakin’ up—I’m losin’ ye!” Scotty shouted over the comm, but Jim didn’t even hear him.
“BONES!” was all he could scream as he desperately scanned the dense air. His chest hurt at the realization that he had left behind the person he loved more than his own life.
Suddenly a shadow of a limp form materialized in front of him.
He pounced on the figure.

“BONES!” Jim gasped, his heart almost stopping when he noticed the translucent sand was already stained crimson red. Blood was pouring out of Bones’ side and mouth.
“Stay with me, Bones—please, stay,” Jim choked out, sliding a hand beneath Bones’ head while trembling fingers searched desperately for his pulse. He bowed over him like a prayer, begging the universe to listen, clinging with everything he had to the desperate hope that this would not be the end.
