Work Text:
The beach was quiet. Dying embers lit up the beach, but everyone was either asleep or inside their tent.
So no one noticed the doctor making his way down to the tent a little separate from the others.
Sawyer sat outside book his hands as he glanced up at the man coming towards him.
Jack sat down next to him. Letting out an exhausted sigh as he lent against the other man.
“You alright there doc’?” Sawyer asked as the other man sat beside him. Closer than he would say is socially acceptable.
He got a pissed of sigh in response. Not being sure if it was directed at him or not he turned his focus back to the book in his lap.
He’d read this one over and over again, but there wasn’t exactly much to choose from here.
Oh well. It was interesting enough. And took his mind off of whatever new fucked up thing was happening on the island.
…
He did eventually have to put the book down when the last of the embers on his fire went out.
It was a cloudy night so the moon wasn’t giving off enough light to read from.
the book left ignored at his side, he turned his head to Jack trying to be subtle but the other had his eyes shut leaning his head back against his tent. He didn’t look in the mood for talking. His face was etched with worry lines. As well, sweat and grim covered his exhausted face.
He’d spent his day; helping the injured(but not himself) or hauling resources up to the caves.
He was probably staring for too long, as he met a pair of tired brown eyes as he looked back up.
“Someth’n on my face?” Jack asked, which the dirt and grom smudged on his face proved. But that wasn’t why he was staring.
“Nah, just admiring the view.” he flashed him a smirk to try play it off. He got a short laugh in return which was worth his humiliating express of feelings.
“Sorry to bother you with.. Uhh myself. But everyone here ‘s always asking me stuff, or asking me to do things. Its nice to sit with you and your passion to ignore social interactions.”
“Uhh, ok thanks I think?” what was described of him was true but it sounded like a backhanded complement.
It was true though. He’d seen how people flocked around Jack. That was a benefit of being disliked, no one came flocking to him to deal with their shit.
He let Jack close his eyes again without any more tries of conversion.
He watched Lock and Boone come back from whatever the hell the two of them did all day.
He watched Charlie sit up next to Claire until he gave up and lay down a few feet away to keep an eye on her. Though he fell asleep about 15 minutes later.
And he watched Rose say her prayers before heading off to her small tent.
But his favorite person to watch was the one next to him.
Jack slowly relaxed. He knew for a bit he’d just been resting his eyes. But eventually his head had fallen to Sawyers shoulder when he finally fell asleep(or passed out from the exhaustion)
If you were to ask him. Sawyer would say he didn’t like or want the other man there. It was pity that let him rest against him.
Because he wouldn’t tell a soul that always watched Jack as he worked. His heart would skip a beat when the other man chose to sit down and eat with him. Or just sit down with him.
Or that he slipped an arm round his back to bring him closer for warmth he would say. Though even he knew that was bullshit.
He was planning on over thinking the rest of the night. But the long overdue comfort led his eyes to shutting much quicker than most nights.
So he let himself lean his head on top of the Jacks before letting himself get some sleep.
…
He woke up by himself. It wasn’t too early but most had taken to lying in.
Still a few people were dotted about chatting or getting first dibs at food.
Rose was washing some clothes. Claire and Charlie were next to her sorting the clean stuff.
Kate was down at the beach for once. She sat against a tree with Hurley sat down opposite her chatting on about probably something boring.
Jack soon came and joined the two. Sawyer tried not to stare too obviously. Or pay attention to the burning feeling in his gut as Jack sat down way too close to Kate then necessary, handing her some breakfast.
Sawyer got up to get his own food himself. Which was just some leftover meat and a few bananas.
He felt eyes on him as he sat down. He ignored the feeling as he sat back down in the same spot as last night. Picking back up his abandoned book.
He did finally chance a glance back at Jack. though he wasn’t looking at him so there wasn’t much point.
